Sean Shelby's Shoes: What's next for Holly Holm and UFC 219's other losing fighters?

After every event, fans wonder whom the losing fighters will be matched up with next. And with another night of UFC action in the rearview mirror, it’s time to look forward, put on a pair of Sean Shelby and Mick Maynard’s shoes, and play UFC matchmaker for UFC 219’s losing fighters.

Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Justino Turns Away Holly Holm to Defend UFC Women’s Featherweight Title

Holly Holm had the will but not the horsepower to go along with it. Cris Cyborg powered through Holm across five rounds to retain the Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s featherweight title in the UFC 219 headliner on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Justino (19-1, 4-0 UFC) curried favor with all three judges by 49-46, 48-47 and 48-47 margins, even though it seemed far more one-sided than the scores indicated. Holm (11-4, 4-4 UFC) landed her share of straight left hands and attempted to hold off “Cyborg” with body kicks, blocked head kicks and clinches, often pushing her to the fence with double underhooks. However, it proved to be an exercise in futility. Justino routinely bashed the Jackson-Wink MMA stalwart with clubbing right hands, doing noticeable damage to her left eye in the process. She unveiled more and more weaponry as the fight drifted along, mixing in devastating knee strikes to the body in close quarters, a few head kicks of her own and a punishing jab for good measure. With no equal in sight, “Cyborg” has now rattled off nine straight wins.

Holly Holm left UFC 219 wearing the damage of 'Fight of the Night' vs. Cris Cyborg

Holm’s manager, Lenny Fresquez, told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto that his client was checked out at the hospital post-fight and did not sustain any serious injuries. The superficial damage is almost certainly unpleasant, but that didn’t stop the former UFC women’s bantamweight champ from smiling for a photo with ring announcer Bruce Buffer (via Instagram ):

Cris ‘Cyborg’ Responds to Insensitive Social Media Post by Jackson-Wink Photographer

As the most hated photographer in the world today, I feel its necessary to comment on the recent fall out I’m causing for both Hollys and Cyborgs camps, and their respectful friends, fans, and families. At the conclusion of UFC 219, I took the final bus out of the arena back to the hotel and ended up on the same bus as Chris Cyborg and her team. As I sat in the back I began to hear them cheer and revel in their victory and discuss small parts of the event. A couple things really bothered me. I heard them laughing and commenting on a picture that renowned photographer Esther Lin took of Cyborgs toes literally in Hollys eye from a kick. Cyborg then went on to discuss how during clinches “the bitch” just “stayed and hugged her but she did nothing”. When I got back to the hotel I posted a picture with an inappropriate caption that everyone is now talking about. I was obviously acting out of anger and frustration. My personal emotions got in the way of my professional status which I failed to adhere to. But there is more to it, Cyborg leading up to the fight through her own Social Media accounts accused Holly and our camp of being the most drug failed camp ever.

Matches to Make After UFC 219

Holly Holm wandered onto the tracks when the train ... well, you know the rest. “The Preacher’s Daughter” was unsuccessful in her bid to dethrone undisputed Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s featherweight titleholder Cris Cyborg , as she lost a unanimous decision to the Brazilian juggernaut in the UFC 219 main event on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Scores were 49-46, 48-47 and 48-47 for Justino, though most observers felt the judges went easy on the affable Holm. Justino outlanded the Albuquerque, New Mexico, native by substantial FightMetric margins across the five-round affair: 118-44 in significant strikes and 131-48 in total strikes. Worse for Holm, the champion’s punches, knees and kicks had considerably more heat on them and took a far heavier toll. By the time their 25 minutes were up, the challenger was barely recognizable, the left side of her face battered by a series of clubbing “Cyborg” right hands. To Holm’s credit, she managed to stay alert and never stopped probing for avenues to what was always an unlikely victory.

Heavyweight James Thompson Suspended 1 Year for Positive Steroid Test at Bellator 191

Veteran heavyweight James Thompson has been suspended for one year after testing positive for the steroid drostanolone at Bellator 191. Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletic Regulations Executive Director Mike Mazzulli first confirmed the failed test to The MMA Report on Friday. In addition to the suspension, Thompson has been fined $2,000 and must provide a clean drug test in order to be relicensed. Thompson failed an in-competition drug test administered by Mazzulli, who acts in a regulatory capacity for international Bellator events. Mazzulli, who is also the president of the Association of Boxing Commissions, revealed that drug tests for middleweight champ Rafael Carvalho , Alessio Sakara and Carlos Mirando at Bellator 190 in Italy the week prior were all negative. Thompson was submitted 1:53 into the opening round by Philip De Fries at Bellator 191, which took place at Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle, England, on Dec. 15. The card aired via tape delay on Spike in the United States. The 39-year-old Englishman has lost his last three fights.

Middleweights Yoel Romero, David Branch to Clash at UFC on Fox 28 in Orlando

Middleweight contender Yoel Romero will return to the Octagon at UFC on Fox 28 , where he will face former World Series of Fighting two-division titlist David Branch . The Las Vegas-based promotion announced the pairing on Friday. UFC on Fox 28 takes place at the Amway Center in Orlando, Fla., on Feb. 24. The evening’s main car will be televised on the Fox network. Prelims will air on Fox Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. Romero last appeared at UFC 213, where he lost a five-round decision to Robert Whittaker in an interim title bout on July 8. That ended an eight-fight winning streak for “The Soldier of God,” who had bested the likes of Chris Weidman , Ronaldo Souza , Lyoto Machida , Derek Brunson and Tim Kennedy during his run. After a successful stint with WSOF, Branch returned to the Octagon with a split decision over Krzysztof Jotko at UFC 211. In his most recent outing, Branch was stopped by Luke Rockhold in the second round of the UFC Fight Night 116 main event. The marked the end of an 11-fight winning streak for the Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu product.

29’s 2017 Year-End Awards: The Complete List

Another eventful 12 months have come and gone in mixed martial arts. Bellator MMA , the Professional Fighters League , Invicta Fighting Championships , Rizin Fighting Federation and One Championship all made significant moves, but the Ultimate Fighting Championship once again cast an immense shadow across the globe; and the sport continued to evolve, for better and for worse. A year that started with a beloved legend being drawn and quartered at UFC Fight Night 103 on Jan. 15 took a number of unexpected twists and turns, most notably lightweight champion Conor McGregor ’s detour into professional boxing for a lucrative showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Four UFC champions lost their grip on promotional gold, as Michael Bisping , Jose Aldo , Cody Garbrandt and Joanna Jedrzejczyk were removed from power by force; Jon Jones returned to the top of the light heavyweight division, only to be undone soon after by a positive test for performance-enhancing drugs. Meanwhile, Cristiane Justino and Nicco Montano captured vacant titles in the women’s featherweight and women’s flyweight divisions.

Mike Tyson sat cageside at UFC 219, which was a dream come true for Khabib Nurmagomedov

It’s like dreams come true. You never know what’s going to happen tomorrow. If you want dreams come true, you have to follow this.”

So, we’re just going to go to sleep tonight, and if you can work your magic and make it Jan. 20 when we wake up in the morning, that would be greatly appreciated. I know we’re supposed to look at every day as a gift, but I’m willing to bypass a few tie clips and ugly sweaters in order to get to this fight.

UFC 219 Bonuses: ‘Cyborg,’ Holm, Nurmagomedov, Elliott Receive $50K Checks

It was a longer night at the office than normal for Cristiane Justino , but the Brazilian was her usual dominant self at UFC 219 . “Cyborg” and Holly Holm earned “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their headlining bout on Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. While the scorecards were surprisingly close, Justino landed most of the bout’s most significant offense in going five rounds to win a unanimous decision for the first time in her professional career. Holm, meanwhile, gained a new measure of respect for going the distance with the most feared woman in the sport. Elsewhere, Khabib Nurmagomedov received a “Performance of the Night” bonus for a dominant decision victory over fellow lightweight contender Edson Barboza in the evening’s co-main event. While Barboza was a game foe, he was simply overwhelmed by the pressure and grappling prowess of “The Eagle,” who won via scorecards of 30-25, 30-25 and 30-24. Finally, Tim Elliott garnered a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for a submission of Mark Delarosa in a preliminary bantamweight contest.

UFC 219 scorecard: Holly Holm could've claimed title from Cris Cyborg with fifth-round win

Judges Dave Hagen and Chris Lee had the fight tied up after four rounds, giving Holm the first and the second while Cyborg took the third and fourth. The champion secured the fifth round, though, giving her a first successful title defense.

Carls John de Tomas Fails USADA Drug Test at UFC Fight Night 123 in Fresno

Bantamweight Carls John de Tomas failed an in-competition drug test following his weigh-in at UFC Fight Night 123 , the promotion revealed in a statement on Friday. “Although de Tomas is no longer under contract with UFC, USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case, as it relates to the UFC Anti-Doping Policy,” the statement read. “Under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, there is a full and fair legal process that is afforded to all athletes before any sanctions are imposed. The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) also retains jurisdiction over this matter as the sample collection was performed the day before de Tomas’ bout at UFC Fight Night: Swanson vs Ortega in Fresno, CA. Accordingly, USADA will work to ensure that the CSAC has the necessary information to determine its proper judgment of de Tomas’ potential anti-doping violation.” The 21-year-old de Thomas lost to Alex Perez via second-round submission in their bout on Dec. 9 at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif.

Holly Holm Recognizes Similar Feel to ‘Cyborg’ Bout, Upset of Ronda Rousey at UFC 193

Holly Holm may never be able to top her monumental upset of Ronda Rousey when it comes to shock value, but comfort in the underdog role could be beneficial for “The Preacher’s Daughter” as she prepares for a different kind of challenge at UFC 219 . Holm is as much as a +325 underdog against Cristiane Justino in their women’s featherweight title bout scheduled for Dec. 30 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. “Cyborg” is the most feared woman in the sport, with notorious punching power and an unbeaten streak that dates back to 2005. Still, Holm was considered much more of a long shot heading into her clash against the then unbeaten Rousey at UFC 193 in November 2015. The Jackson-Wink MMA standout made history that night in Melbourne, as she knocked out Rousey with a head kick and follow-up punches 59 seconds into round two of their bantamweight championship tilt. The victory made Holm one of the most recognizable talents in women’s MMA even as a three-fight losing streak would follow. Holm returned to the win column with a June knockout of Bethe Correia , but once again, she is facing long odds as she heads into a high-profile title fight.

An MMA Christmas: 12 Fights We Want Santa to Bring Us in 2018

Every year the same question burns in our minds: what do we want for Christmas? For us MMA fans, the answer is always pretty simple. We want more great fights. There were a number of great ones in 2017. Justin Gaethje was involved in a couple of classics against Michael Johnson and Eddie Alvarez , Yancy Medeiros and Alex Oliveira put on a scrap for the ages, and T.J. Dillashaw and Cody Garbrandt put on a hell of a show as well. That’s to say nothing of the memorably one-sided performances as well, from Rose Namajunas ’ dismantling of longtime champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk , Darren Till ’s coming out party against Donald Cerrone , Francis Ngannou ’s near-beheading of Alistair Overeem , Robert Whittaker ’s molly-whopping of Ronaldo Souza , or either of Max Holloway ’s wins over Jose Aldo . And that’s just the start; there are dozens more fights that could be mentioned here. On this most festive time of the year, a week away from 2018, here is our Christmas list of fights we want Old Saint Nick to bring us, one for each weight class. Heavyweight: Stipe Miocic vs.
