5 Report: UFC 197 to feature Dos Anjos vs McGregor, Holm vs Tate doubleheader

Obviously that's a gigantic PPV if it becomes official. Dos Anjos (25-7) is coming off a 66 second mauling of Donald Cerrone in the UFC on FOX 17 main event on December 19th. It's the Brazilian's first successful defense of his title. McGregor (19-2) unforgettably knocked out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds at UFC 194 to become the UFC's new featherweight champion. His goal was to simultaneously hold two UFC titles, and he's evidently getting that shot at an historical achievement.

7 Forbes Welcome

Mauro Ranallo: Battling a Stigma

Mauro Ranallo lays supine in a white gown, on white sheets, in a white sterile room, and yet he feels the darkness creeping up on the edges of his face. His heart beats its way up his throat, as his heavy eyelids blink at the ceiling and he wonders if it is strong enough to hold him. The extreme tells his mind to slow down, to ease up and breathe, and a chill overwhelms him. The cursing echoes, thankfully, have been heard: “You’re a real son of a bitch, a coward, for taking the easy way out. How can you do that to your family?” And he pulls back from that edge, curls up and cries. Ranallo, the acclaimed Showtime boxing broadcaster whose lengthy career behind the mic includes MMA and professional wrestling, thought about killing himself many times, just like he did that terrible night in a Toronto hospital while pushing back his inner demons. He has visualized his death a number of times, seeing in his mind the passing funeral procession of cars and people paying tribute in a surreal celebration of who he was and what he had done. He has wept often during the war he waged and won not that long ago against an opponent he always sees though will never defeat -- himself.

Luke Rockhold hints that Chris Weidman rematch may be looming

Rockhold would like nothing more than to avenge that loss but Belfort just recently lost in a title fight against Weidman and since then he's only competed one time with a knockout victory over Dan Henderson this past November. According to Rockhold, the thought right now is that as much as he wants to face Belfort, the Brazilian still hasn't done enough to earn a title fight so soon after his last one and he'll likely need another win before he'll be considered.

Opinion: Calling Shots and Breaking Promises

After emptying its clip to close 2015 in a furious hail of pay-per-view buys, the Ultimate Fighting Championship had to scramble to put together something jaw-dropping for its early 2016 campaign, something that recalled the stacked, spectacle-laden affairs Zuffa sought to create late last year. However, this is MMA, where scrambles can lead to beautiful outcomes, and in this case, UFC 197 , tentatively set for March 5 in Las Vegas, fits the bill. No two fighters captured the MMA imagination last year like Conor McGregor and Holly Holm , so it’s a poetic if unexpected surprise to see them alongside one another on a doubleheader. Ever since Holm decapitated Ronda Rousey in six minutes and McGregor clattered Jose Aldo in 13 seconds, the subject of who they would face next was immediate hot-button conversation; I’ve written about both of their predicaments previously . We now know Holm will defend her bantamweight strap against Miesha Tate and McGregor will move back to 155 pounds to challenge Rafael dos Anjos for the UFC lightweight crown, but those choices won’t please everybody.

This Month’s MMA Birthdays: Miguel Torres Turns 35

Before Dominick Cruz , Renan Barao and T.J. Dillashaw , there was Miguel Torres . Torres, who celebrates his 35th birthday on Jan. 18, was for a time regarded as the sport’s premier bantamweight. He entered World Extreme Cagefighting with a stellar 32-1 record in September 2007, submitted Jeff Bedard with a first-round triangle choke and took aim at champion Chase Beebe five months later. Beebe did not last four minutes, as he tapped to a guillotine choke at WEC 32 and surrendered the promotion’s 135-pound title to Torres. Wins over Yoshiro Maeda , Manny Tapia and Takeya Mizugaki followed before the Carlson Gracie-trained Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt bowed to Brian Bowles and Joseph Benavidez in back-to-back bouts. Torres reached the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 2011 and compiled a 2-2 record -- it included a disputed decision loss to current flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson -- before departing. Though Torres has become something of a journeyman since, with losses in four of his past seven bouts, his slide has done little to diminish his accomplishments.

Report: Dos Anjos-McGregor, Holm-Tate Title Bouts Set for UFC 197 in Las Vegas

UFC 197 is shaping up to be an event to remember. Multiple outlets are reporting that the March pay-per-view event will feature a pair of blockbuster title bouts, as Rafael dos Anjos will defend the lightweight strap against Conor McGregor , while Holly Holm will face Miesha Tate for bantamweight gold. UFC 197 is expected to take place in Las Vegas on March 5 after originally being announced for Rio de Janeiro. Bleacher Report on Thursday first brought word of the card, although the UFC has yet to confirm the bookings. Related » Opinion: Calling Shots and Breaking Promises with McGregor vs. Dos Anjos After capturing the lightweight strap with a lopsided five-round verdict over Anthony Pettis at UFC 185, dos Anjos made his first defense in emphatic fashion, as he stopped Donald Cerrone in just 66 seconds in the UFC on Fox 17 headliner on Dec. 19. The Kings MMA product has won 10 of his last 11 bouts in the Octagon. McGregor capped off a memorable 2015 at UFC 194 with a 13-second knockout of reigning featherweight king Jose Aldo .

Souza will defend the Invicta Fighting Championships strawweight crown for the first time when she meets the unbeaten DeAnna Bennett in the Invicta 15 co-headliner on Jan. 16 at The Hangar at OC Fair in Costa Mesa, California. The event will stream to UFC Fight Pass at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. A judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, Souza has won each of her first eight bouts, seven by submission. I will be in Las Vegas to attend the event and collect all my awards. 4. Floyd Mayweather, don't ever bring race into my success again. I am an Irishman. My people have been oppressed our entire existence. And still very much are. I understand the feeling of prejudice. It is a feeling that is deep in my blood. In my family's long history of warfare there was a time where just having the name 'McGregor' was punishable by death. Do not ever put me in a bracket like this again. If you want we can organise a fight no problem. I will give you a fair 80/20 split purse in my favour seen as your last fight bombed at every area of revenue.

Ben Coomber Radio by Ben Coomber on iTunes

i used to love listening to this podcast but, unfortunately, I feel I must get a few things off my chest and leave a negative review. Originally, Ben and Anna had a great thing going with the podcasts but Rachel just brings it down. I’ve stuck with it for as long as I can but now it is just excruciating listening to her. Have Ben and Rachel got a little “in joke” that she has to say “I DIGRESS” during EVERY podcast? If so, it’s just not funny any more guys. It’s so annoying. Please stop it. I thought today (Episode 129) it had stopped, but she snuck it in. Secondly, can Rachel actually read? EVERY question is just a stumble and stutter over the words she is trying to read out. Again, very annoying to listen to. Why can’t she read the 5, yes only 5, questions read out on each podcast beforehand so she knows what she’s saying. Surely it would only take 5 minutes before the show begins. Lastly, Rachel, you have a terrible habit of smacking your lips after reading out every sentence you read. If you don’t know what I mean, it sounds like a giant TUT after every full stop. Again, extremely annoying, especially when you have headphones on or are listening in your car.

Felder-Cruickshank to Headline UFC Fight Night Boston Prelims on Fight Pass

A lightweight battle between Paul Felder and Daron Cruickshank at UFC Fight Night Boston will serve as the featured Fight Pass prelim on Jan. 17. Felder enters the fracas on a two-fight losing streak, having dropped decisions to Edson Barboza and Ross Pearson . “The Irish Dragon” began his professional career with 10 straight wins, including triumphs over Danny Castillo and Jason Saggo in the Octagon. UFC Annnounces Fight Night Events for Croatia, Netherlands in 2016

The Ultimate Fighting Championship will enter a pair of new international markets in the coming year. The Las Vegas-based promotion announced on Friday that it will hold Fight Night cards in Zagreb, Croatia at Zagreb Arena on April 10 and Rotterdam, Netherlands, at Ahoy Rotterdam on May 8. No bouts were revealed for either event, but both will air on Fox Sports 1 in the United States. Both countries have significant roots in MMA. Croatia is the home of retired UFC and Pride Fighting Championships superstar Mirko Filipovic , while current heavyweight contender Stipe Miocic also has ties to the European nation. “It would be a dream if I was able to fight in Croatia,” Miocic told . “I travelled there for the first time in 2015 to train with Mirko Cro Cop and it was a great experience just to see the country and spend some time there with my family. I don’t know what the UFC has in store for me now, but I’ll definitely be back in Croatia one way or another.” Meanwhile, Netherlands is the homeland of promotional stalwarts such as Alistair Overeem , Gegard Mousasi and Stefan Struve .

Tyron Woodley makes case for welterweight title shot

Even before Robbie Lawler and Carlos Condit stepped into the Octagon and co-wrote an instant classic at UFC 195, Tyron Woodley knew the title shot he had been promised last fall had the possibility of being rescinded. Once the champion and challenger crossed the threshold into the UFC’s eight-sided proving ground and combined on a Fight of the Year contender just two days into 2016, Woodley was well aware that he would be faced with myriad questions about his place in line and the possibility of an immediate rematch and it didn’t take long for him to make his feelings known. Seated alongside Karyn Bryant, Kenny Florian and Daniel Cormier on the FS1 desk following the fight, the welterweight title hopeful spoke his mind about running back the championship bout that just concluded when there are competitors that have worked their way to the top of the divisional rankings (hint hint), patiently waiting for their opportunity. “First off, it was a phenomenal fight and I don’t want to take away from the fight and what a moment it was for the welterweight division and the UFC,” Woodley said a couple days removed from last Saturday’s title clash.

Cerrone, Two Other Fighters from UFC on Fox 17 Fined for Outfitting Policy Violation

Donald Cerrone was one of three fighters competing at UFC on Fox 17 to be fined by the UFC for violating the promotion’s Athletic Outfitting Policy. According to the UFC’s recently implemented policy, fighters and their teams are to wear Reebok apparel on fight night and during all fight week-related events. The infractions were first brought to light by . According to UFC Senior Vice President of Global Consumer Products Tracey Bleczinski, the fines and the athletes involved will remain confidential. However, Cerrone later took to Twitter to admit that he had been fined for a uniform violation, and subsequently confirmed with “Cowboy’s” manager that the recent lightweight challenger was one of the three fighters in question. “Let’s just say a lot,” Cerrone wrote when asked how much he was penalized. “Think of a number then double it.” According to the report, the three fighters on the Dec. 19 card were fined after “knowingly and seriously” violating the outfitting policy.

Reneau vs. Evans-Smith Added to UFC Fight Night Card in Pittsburgh

The Ultimate Fighting Championship announced Thursday the addition of a women’s bantamweight skirmish to its UFC Fight Night card in Pittsburgh on Feb. 21, as Marion Reneau will tango with Ashlee Evans-Smith . The main event of the evening, which will air on Fox Sports 1, will see former lightweight title challenger Donald Cerrone move up to welterweight to fight Tim Means . The card will take place inside Consol Energy Center. Reneau burst into the UFC in 2015 by edging Alexis Dufresne in January and then submitting Jessica Andrade via triangle choke in the first round in February. Her winning streak came to a halt in July when she was outclassed by eventual world champion Holly Holm . As for Evans-Smith, she hasn’t fought in over a year since losing her UFC debut to Raquel Pennington . The first-round bulldog choke submission loss was the first of her career after three victories on the regional circuit.

UFC Champ T.J. Dillashaw on New Training Camp: ‘I’ve Never Had This Much Attention’

T.J. Dillashaw ’s highly-publicized exit from Team Alpha Male earlier this year was once of the uglier fighter-camp splits in recent memory, as Urijah Faber has since declared his friendship with the bantamweight champion ”off the table.” Despite the harsh feelings that Dillashaw’s move triggered, training couldn’t be better for the fighter in his new home at Elevation Fight Team in Denver. While Dillashaw traveled to Colorado primarily to be near striking coach Duane Ludwig , he has discovered numerous other benefits since his arrival. Dillasahw has been at Elevation exclusively in preparation for his title defense against Dominick Cruz at UFC Fight Night Boston on Jan. 17. “It’s going good. The altitude’s been awesome, just realizing how great of shape I’m gonna be in,” Dillashaw said during a conference call on Friday. “Going home back to California for Christmas and realizing the big difference it’s gonna make for me is awesome. “I’ve never had this many coaches’ eyes on me before. I’ve always had Duane coaching me, and now I have four other coaches that are watching over practice.

Georges St. Pierre: 5 Defining Moments

A case can be made that he belongs on MMA’s Mount Rushmore , his accomplishments in line with Fedor Emelianenko , Anderson Silva , Kazushi Sakuraba , Royce Gracie and other legendary fighters. Georges St. Pierre has not fought in more than two years but remains firmly entrenched as the greatest welterweight of all-time . What began on Jan. 25, 2002, seems to have concluded more than a decade later on Nov. 16, 2013. In the spaces in between, St. Pierre put together a resume filled with unprecedented success. His career record stands at 25-2, the only two defeats on his ledger avenged in emphatic fashion. While St. Pierre has not yet officially retired and though rumors continue to swirl about a possible return, it becomes less likely with each passing day that we will ever see him compete inside the Octagon again. If the book has indeed closed on St. Pierre, his achievements speak for themselves. He ranks first on the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s all-time list in wins (19) second in successful title defenses (nine) and second in Octagon time (5:28:12).
