Sherdog.com’s 2016 Comeback Fighter of the Year

He was gone but not forgotten, out of sight but certainly not out of mind. Khabib Nurmagomedov spent nearly two full years on the sidelines convalescing from various injuries, as the undefeated Dagestani brute watched the Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight division move on without him. He was Cain Velasquez at 155 pounds, an uncrowned king who could not stay healthy. In his absence, Rafael dos Anjos , Eddie Alvarez , Tony Ferguson and others rose to the top of the division. As it turns out, Nurmagomedov was simply biding his time. His return bout was booked for UFC on Fox 19, where he was slotted opposite Ferguson in the headliner. However, 11 days out from the event, Ferguson withdrew with an injury and left UFC officials scrambling to fill the vacancy. They settled on Cage Fury Fighting Championships titleholder Darrell Horcher as a replacement, matched him with Nurmagomedov and elevated Glover Teixeira - Rashad Evans to the main event position. The change in plans had no effect on Nurmagomedov, Sherdog’s “Comeback Fighter of the Year” for 2016.

Melvin Guillard, Chidi Njokuani Booked for Bellator 171 Main Event on Jan. 27

Melvin Guillard and Chidi Njokuani will square off in the Bellator 171 headliner on Jan. 27. Sherdog.com confirmed the pairing with a promotion official on Tuesday following an initial report from MMAFighting.com . The bout will be contested at a 175-pound catch-weight. Bellator 171 takes place at Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Kan., and will see David Rickels face Aaron Derrow at lightweight in the evening’s co-main event. Guillard was suspended for one year after failing a urinalysis in relation to his victory over Rickels at Bellator 159 on July 22. While the substance wasn’t revealed, “The Young Assassin” was fined $10,000 by the Kansas Athletic Commission, and the result of the fight was changed to a no contest. The KAC informed MMAFighting.com that the commission voted unanimously to reinstate Guillard before his suspension ended after the fighter successfully completed rehab. Guillard has struggled to make weight recently, missing the lightweight limit in four of his last five bouts. He hasn’t officially won a fight since stopping Gesias Cavalcante in the second frame at World Series of Fighting 11 in July 2014.

Opinion: An Aging Prodigy

Illustration: K. David Bena Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * When the bout between B.J. Penn and Yair Rodriguez was announced, my immediate feeling was that it was stupid. Part of that opinion is rooted in the fact that Penn was one of the first fighters that brought me into the sport, and he has captured my imagination of what is possible as a mixed martial artist like no one has before or since. To say he’s a legend in the sport is trite; to my mind, the highs of his career represent the absolute ceiling of competitive martial arts. One of the primary appeals of martial arts is the idea that technique trumps physical advantages. Bruce Lee, for instance, was the introduction of traditional martial arts for many of us. Perhaps his most famous fight scene is against the 7-foot-2 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in “The Game of Death.” In that scene, the 5-foot-8 Lee uses a variety of techniques from different disciplines to eventually overcome an opponent who absolutely dwarfed him.

In an effort to bring more attention to the global stage of mixed martial arts, this list does not focus on major North American-based promotions such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Bellator MMA and the World Series of Fighting. *** The Invicta Fighting Championships featherweight crown has fallen into a state of limbo following Cristiane Justino ’s failed drug test and resulting suspension. Megan Anderson and Charmaine Tweet have moved in to pick up the slack, as they are primed to meet in the Invicta 21 headliner on Jan. 14 at the Scottish Rite Temple in Kansas City, Missouri. The event will stream in its entirety to UFC Fight Pass, as the trailblazing all-female MMA organization hits the ground running in 2017. Former UFC Lightweight Champ Rafael dos Anjos Announces Move to Welterweight

It wasn’t too long ago that Rafael dos Anjos was the king of the lightweights. He was 10-1 over an 11-fight stretch and in that span, he captured the UFC’s 155-pound crown. His unanimous decision win over Anthony Pettis won him the title and he defended by spectacularly knocking out Donald Cerrone in 66 seconds in his first defense and it seemed at that juncture that the Brazilian might wind up being an all-time great. But a first-round stoppage loss to Eddie Alvarez lost him his throne and when Tony Ferguson defeated him via judges’ decision last November, his run as a top lightweight reached a resounding end. As a result, dos Anjos will be making a significant change in 2017. Brazilian news outlet Combate reported that dos Anjos has abandoned the lightweight division and will now campaign as a full-fledged welterweight. A message on dos Anjos’ official Twitter account on Friday confirmed the report. “I reached the top of LW, it’s been a hard journey make weight every time, now I want to fight at my best, I have new goals, I’m moving to WW,” he wrote.

Former 115-pound champion Carla Esparza will lock horns with Randa Markos at UFC Fight Night 105 on Feb. 19. Promotion officials announced the bout on Tuesday. UFC Fight Night 105 takes place at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and is headlined by a heavyweight rematch between Junior dos Santos and Stefan Struve . Esparza won the strawweight crown by making it through “The Ultimate Fighter 20” and dispatching Rose Namajunas in the show’s finale in December 2014. After relinquishing the title to Joanna Jedrzejczyk in her next appearance, “Cookie Monster” returned to the win column in her last outing at UFC 197, where she took a unanimous decision over Juliana Lima . Markos is 2-3 in the Octagon, including a first-round submission loss to Cortney Casey in her last promotional appearance at UFC 202. The 31-year-old Ontario native owns wins against Jocelyn Jones-Lybarger and Aisling Daly in UFC competition.

Bellator Rebooks Budd-Coenen for Bellator 174, Will Crown First Women's 145-Pound Champ

Bellator MMA is going to try to crown a women's featherweight champion once again. Women's MMA trailblazer Marloes Coenen will take on Julia Budd to crown Bellator's inaugural 145-pound women's ace on March 3 at Bellator 174 at WinStar World Casino and Resort in Thackerville, Okla. MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani first reported the latest version of the pairing. This is not the first time that the promotion has tried to put featherweight gold on Coenen or Budd. Last year, Budd-Coenen was scheduled for Bellator 155 in Boise, Idaho. When Budd suffered an undisclosed injury in training, she was replaced with Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Alexis Dufresne . Unfortunately, Dufresne weighed in at nearly 151 pounds for the bout and then further complicated matters when the overweight “Sneaky Zebra” locked on a triangle-armbar to tap the Dutch MMA pioneer in the first round in one of the year's biggest upsets. Coenen, 35, has been fighting professionally since November 2000, when she was just 19 years old. Prior to her surprising submission loss to Dufresne in May, the former Strikeforce women's 135-pound champ had won her first two bouts in the Bellator cage, earning submission victories over Annalisa Bucci and Arlene Blencowe .

‘The WWE No Longer Interested In Ronda Rousey — They Don’t Want Broken Stars’

I’ll say this before, and I will say it again; there has never been an athlete in the history of sports that their self worth, and I don’t like saying this but it’s true..their self worth is so tied to their professional success, think about that for a second; when she lost, she was not only devastated; when she lost, the thoughts that were going through her head were not good ones, and hopefully she understands that she has gone much farther than any female in sports, and hopefully she can latch on to a positive, but as far as the WWE is concerned, they don’t bring in a broken star, and that is what she is. She is broken from a professional sense. They don’t rebuild broken celebrities outside of the WWE. Brock started in the WWE. Ken Shamrock was a fighter who lost, but any of these comparisons, are not only fair to them, but they’re not fair to Ronda Rousey. They are never going to bring her in because the fans won’t treat her fairly, and what exactly are they going to do with her at this point?

The Denver native is excited to keep things rolling in front of his hometown fans. “It’s an honor to be headlining one of the first LFA events in my backyard,” Edwards said. “I have fought for both RFA and Legacy FC and had great experiences working with the people behind the scenes for both promotions. Two More Bouts Added to BAMMA 28 on Feb. 24

The British Association of Mixed Martial Arts announced Friday afternoon that two more bouts have been tacked onto BAMMA 28, which goes down Feb. 24 at SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Newly-crowned Lonsdale lightweight champion Rhys McKee will stand opposite Myles Price in his first title defense, while John Redmond will take on Pelu Adetola in a middleweight affair. McKee is coming off the biggest win of his career and looks to keep his success rolling in front of his hometown fans. “Skeletor” has yet to lose in the pro ranks and at BAMMA 27 last December, he flattened Jai Herbert in just 1:47 to capture the promotion’s belt. The Next Generation N.I. product has stopped every man he’s faced.. Price has won just twice in his last seven bouts but he’s only been stopped twice. Redmond is aiming to rebound from a submission loss to Leeroy Barnes at a Cage Warriors event in November. “Johnny Jitzu” had won two straight bouts prior to his most recent loss, and wants to reverse his career arc against Adetola, who has lost three consecutive bouts and five of six overall.

Cody Garbrandt-TJ Dillashaw feud continues as Dillashaw calls champ's bluff | BJPenn.com

While the possibility of both men emerging from their fights victorious and fighting one another for the bantamweight championship was certainly a possibility in the minds of fight fans, Dillashaw was one step ahead, already looking to potential set up a potential fight with his former teammate when just hours before the event was set to kick off, he revealed on social media that he had made ‘No Love’ cry during practices at TAM. Garbrandt fired back, hours before his title fight with Cruz, dropping a bombshell as he proclaimed that TAM coach Justin Buchholz had footage of himself knocking Dillashaw out in training. Dillashaw of course refuted the claims, which resulted in a back-and-forth war of words between the two men. Following Garbrandt’s masterful win over Cruz , and Dillashaw’s dominant win over Lineker, the two men have continued to trade shots on social media.
