John McCarthy explains Bellator commentator move, plans to still officiate boxing

“My job is to take the softballs that a Mauro Ranallo or Mike Goldberg are going to give me and polish it up so fans understand exactly why a guy is being successful and what he’s doing, and not take over the broadcast,” McCarthy said. “It’s absolutely a challenge. That’s part of the reason I took the job. I know it sounds egotistical, but truthfully, in MMA refereeing, where was my place to go? I’d been there, and I’d done it. I’d done the biggest fights, been part of incredible shows. What’s the only direction for me to go? The only direction is down.”

Aljamain Sterling Critical of UFC’s Response Following Knockout Loss to Marlon Moraes

Haha yea I feel ya pain. Gonna right the ship in April. No symptoms, no headaches, etc. First day of training tn! https://t.co/wPlhP1wryW — Aljamain Sterling (@FunkMaster_UFC) January 8, 2018 Aljamain Sterling , in response to an inquiry on social media on Monday , updated fans on his status following the first knockout loss of his career. The 28-year-old bantamweight was on a two-fight winning streak that included a decision victory over former champion Renan Barao before he faced off with Marlon Moraes at UFC Fight Night 123 on Dec. 9. Had he defeated the Brazilian, Sterling likely would have been in the No. 1 contender conversation, along with Jimmie Rivera , Cody Garbrandt and Dominick Cruz . Instead, he was on the receiving end of a brutal KO and the Internet memes that followed. Publicly, Sterling has refused to let the experience keep him down. He made light of the trending highlight reel on Twitter but addressed the seriousness of what occurred during an appearance on “The MMA Hour.” Sterling admits he made mistakes in the cage but expected more from the Ultimate Fighting Championship .

Debets: Threading the Conor McGregor Needle

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * It has been 14 months since Conor McGregor last stepped foot in the Octagon and decimated Eddie Alvarez to win the undisputed Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight title, and it feels like a lifetime ago. Back then, Barack Obama was still in the Oval Office, Harvey Weinstein was still a respected member of Hollywood’s elite and the idea that Georges St. Pierre ’s return fight would come against Michael Bisping for the middleweight championship was still safely languishing in when-pigs-fly territory. Times have changed. While McGregor’s notoriety has risen outside the UFC, courtesy of his boxing escapades and increasingly questionable conduct involving Bellator MMA officials and pop star Rita Ora , members of the UFC’s lightweight and featherweight divisions and a growing cadre of MMA fans have had no choice but to move on in his absence.

Sherdog.com’s Pound-for-Pound Top 10

Robbie Lawler enjoyed quite a late-career ride as a pound-for-pound stalwart, long after his competitive prime was thought to have run its course. Nevertheless, all good things must come to an end. Lawler on Dec. 16 had no answers for Rafael dos Anjos , as he lost a five-round decision to the resurgent Brazilian in the UFC on Fox 26 main event at Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Dos Anjos pitched a shutout, carrying 50-45 scorecards from all three judges. To make matters worse for Lawler, he suffered a torn ACL and meniscus -- knee injuries that figure to sideline him for most of 2018. Where “Ruthless Robbie” goes from here remains to be seen, but he turns 36 on March 20 and has the mileage of a grueling 41-fight career with which to contender. For now, Lawler exits our pound-for-pound list to make room for the man who defeated him. Dos Anjos was something of an afterthought a little more than a year ago, but a move to 170 pounds has breathed new life into the former lightweight champion’s career. Since throwing out his anchor in the welterweight division, RDA has gone 3-0 with wins over Lawler, Neil Magny and Tarec Saffiedine .

Walker: The Uphill and Unnecessary Battle for Zuffa Boxing

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * When the Floyd Mayweather - Conor McGregor World Tour rolled into Toronto for its second stop, Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White used the stage to show off the latest addition to his famed T-shirt collection. His red Zuffa Boxing shirt turned heads and began speculation. Much like the Saturday Night Live shirt White wore when rumors of an NBC deal were circulating, it meant something. Months later, the Boston native confirmed that Zuffa Boxing was indeed a real thing and his ambitions to sign heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua were made public. Fresh into 2018, we have very little official indication of what is going on with the new brand name. What will Zuffa Boxing look like? Is this even a worthy pursuit for the UFC brass? The decline of boxing has been well documented. What was once primetime viewing that consistently electrified the sports world had been reduced to delayed matchups and rare television appearances held up by high-priced pay-per-view events featuring the few stars that remained.

Mike Perry Gets Hometown Duty Versus Max Griffin at UFC on Fox 28 in Orlando

Surely you didn’t think the Ultimate Fighting Championship was going to leave Mike Perry off of a network television card in his hometown, did you? Though not yet officially announced by the promotion, heavy-hitting Perry appears set to square off with like-minded striker Max Griffin at UFC on Fox 28 , scheduled for Feb. 24 at the Amway Center in Orlando, Fla. Both 170-pounders seemingly confirmed the contest Monday via social media. Pumped to fight here in #Orlando where I live ! @maxpainmma is trying to bring the pain in my city ! 5 UFC Prospects Worth Watching in 2018

MMA’s talent pipelines continue to provide talent for the Ultimate Fighting Championship , and as the world’s largest mixed martial arts promotion chugs into 2018, there are a number of fast-rising prospects worth keeping an eye on. Here are five of them: Tai Tuivasa Tuivasa came to the UFC at the age of 24 with an overall record of 5-0. In a heavyweight division absolutely devoid of young talent, he was a welcomed addition. Tuivasa took on Rashad Coulter in his promotional debut at UFC Fight Night 121 on Nov. 19 and finished him in devastating fashion, scoring a flying knee knockout in the first round. He first made his name as a professional rugby player and kickboxer, then made the transition to MMA. “Bam Bam” has plenty of talented training partners at his disposal in Western Sydney, including UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker , 2001 K-1 World Grand Prix winner Mark Hunt and light heavyweight prospect Tyson Pedro . Tuivasa has the luxury of being one of the youngest heavyweights on the UFC roster, so it will be interesting to see how he develops.

After Tonya Evinger Injury, Marion Reneau to Face Sara McMann at UFC on Fox 28

Instead of competing at UFC Fight Night 126 in Austin, Marion Reneau will face Sara McMann at UFC on Fox 28 on Feb. 28. MMAjunkie.com was the first to report the bantamweight booking, and both fighters have since confirmed it via social media. Reneau was originally supposed to square off against Tonya Evinger on Feb. 18, but the former Invicta champ was forced out of the contest due to injury. Meanwhile, current Invicta FC bantamweight queen Yana Kunitskaya was initially rumored to meet McMann at UFC on Fox 28; while both fighters announced that pairing via social media, it was never confirmed by the UFC. UFC on Fox 28 takes place at the Amway Center in Orlando and features a middleweight showdown between Yoel Romero and David Branch . The evening’s main card airs on the Fox Network following prelims on Fox Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. Reneau last appeared at UFC Fight Night 115, where she scored a third-round stoppage of Talita Bernardo on Sept. 2. The 40-year-old Californian is 4-2-1 in UFC competition and 8-3-1 as a professional overall.

Max Holloway Opens as Sizable Favorite in Title Defense Against Frankie Edgar at UFC 222

Max Holloway will be a large betting favorite to retain his featherweight crown when he faces Frankie Edgar at UFC 222 later this year. According to oddsmaker Bovada , Holloway has opened as a -280 favorite for his second 145-pound title defense. Edgar, meanwhile, in his third attempt at claiming UFC featherweight gold, is listed at +225. UFC 222 takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on March 3. Holloway and Edgar were originally scheduled to meet at UFC 218 on Dec. 2, but “The Answer was forced to withdraw from that contest after suffering a fractured orbital in training. Instead, Holloway stopped longtime former featherweight king Jose Aldo in the third frame, increasing his current winning streak to 12. After falling to Aldo in an interim title bid at UFC 200, Edgar has rebounded to post back-to-back triumphs over Jeremy Stephens and Yair Rodriguez . The Ricardo Almeida Jiu-Jitsu representative also challenged for the belt at UFC 156 in February 2013, losing to Aldo via five-round decision.

Champion vs. Champion Bout Between Mamed Khalidov, Tomasz Narkun to Headline KSW 42 in Lodz

Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki is going back to the champion-versus-champion well. The preeminent Polish MMA outfit announced on Monday that KSW 42 will be headlined by a showdown between the promotion’s middleweight champion and central star Mamed Khalidov and 205-pound titlist Tomasz Narkun . The bout will be contested at a catchweight of 90 kilograms, or approximately 198 pounds. KSW 42 is scheduled for March 3 at the Atlas Arena in Lodz, Poland. The 37-year-old Khalidov is riding a 15-fight unbeaten streak dating back to his loss to Jorge Santiago at Sengoku Raiden Championship in March 2010, nearly eight years ago. At KSW 39 “Colosseum” this past May, Khalidov headlined in front of nearly 58,000 fans in Warsaw, taking a narrow and hotly-contested unanimous decision over KSW’s welterweight champion Borys Mankowski in a bout contested at 181 pounds. Narkun, 28, earned the KSW 205-pound mantle in October 2015, knocking out Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Goran Relic. He has since made three successful title defenses, stopping Cassio Barbosa de Oliveira , Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and most recently, Marcin Wojcik via first-round submission at “Colosseum” in May.

Jorge Masvidal: Ex-UFC champ Michael Bisping has a 'bounty on his head'

“I just don’t like him as a person,” Masvidal told MMAjunkie Radio. “I never really liked him before I met him, and after we had our encounters I liked him even less. With him, it’s just a personal thing. He disrespected my country when he ripped up the flag, so he’s got the bounty on his head. I would like to cash in before he retires. That’s why I’m willing to fight so early (in March).”
