Former UFC welterweight champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler had decided to part ways with one of mixed martial arts top gyms, American Top Team. Ex-Strawweight Champ Carla Esparza to Face Randa Markos at UFC Fight Night 105

Former 115-pound champion Carla Esparza will lock horns with Randa Markos at UFC Fight Night 105 on Feb. 19. Promotion officials announced the bout on Tuesday. UFC Fight Night 105 takes place at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and is headlined by a heavyweight rematch between Junior dos Santos and Stefan Struve . Esparza won the strawweight crown by making it through “The Ultimate Fighter 20” and dispatching Rose Namajunas in the show’s finale in December 2014. After relinquishing the title to Joanna Jedrzejczyk in her next appearance, “Cookie Monster” returned to the win column in her last outing at UFC 197, where she took a unanimous decision over Juliana Lima . Markos is 2-3 in the Octagon, including a first-round submission loss to Cortney Casey in her last promotional appearance at UFC 202. The 31-year-old Ontario native owns wins against Jocelyn Jones-Lybarger and Aisling Daly in UFC competition.

The Bottom Line: UFC’s Mexico Hopes Hang on Yair Rodriguez

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Yair Rodriguez on Sunday in Phoenix will compete in the most important bout in Ultimate Fighting Championship history for a Mexican-born fighter. B.J. Penn , the celebrated former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion, returns to action for only the second time in over four years. Part of the reason Penn is so popular is that throughout his career he has fought pretty much exclusively against consequential fighters. The UFC’s decision to match Penn against Rodriguez is a signal that it sees big-time potential in the 24-year-old Mexican competitor. The stakes have been ratcheted up by the time and place: a main event slot on a Fox Sports 1 show after the NFL on Fox, a position that has led to big ratings in the past. This is a huge opportunity for Rodriguez, a chance to create the UFC’s first genuine Mexican-born star.

Floyd Mayweather Says He Offered Conor McGregor $15 Million, PPV Points for Boxing Match

Shortly after he become lightweight champion at UFC 205, Conor McGregor said he would need $100 million to face pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match. “Money” claims he recently made a counter offer to McGregor. And while it wasn’t in the $100 million ballpark -- that’s Mayweather territory, according to the man himself -- it was an impressive figure nonetheless. “We tried to make the Conor McGregor fight,” Mayweather said on ESPN’s “First Take” on Wednesday. “They know what my number is. My number was a guaranteed $100 million. That was my number. We’re the A-side. I don’t know how much money Conor McGregor has made. I’m pretty sure he hasn’t even made $10 million in an MMA bout. We are willing to give him $15 million and then we could talk about splitting the percentage, the back end percentage on pay-per-view.” McGregor earned a disclosed $3 million payday for his victory over Nate Diaz at UFC 202 in August. Salaries from UFC 205, which took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City, were not released. The Dublin native recently received a boxing license in California but remains under contract with the UFC, which means the Las Vegas-based organization has exclusive rights to promote his fights.

Sherdog.com’s 2016 All-Violence Team - 2016 All-Violence Team

There has been a lot of talk this week about whether or not this sport we love really constitutes “one of the arts.” This is the All-Violence Team, and these are MMA’s truest artists. If you are uninitiated and need a thorough account of the All-Violence Team and its goals, you can get your questions answered here . If all you want is a short explanation, I’ll refer you to this team’s mission statement, courtesy of poet Ezra Pound: “The modern artist must live by craft and violence. His gods are violent gods. Those artists, so called, whose work does not show this strife, are uninteresting.” From strawweight to heavyweight, these are the 27 athletes who authored the knockouts, submissions and battles that won our hearts and minds in 2016. This is a roster comprised of the fighters who most intimately and personally made MMA worth watching, whether with textbook fundamentals or exotic techniques. They kicked the most ass and did it in the most thrilling, engrossing way. That is not to say there are no master strategists on this list, as many of MMA’s most violent athletes are clever tacticians, but this team is more about the politics of confrontation than contemplation.

Carpenter Suffers Concussion, Bout vs. Hardy Scratched from Invicta FC 21

The bout between Brieta Carpenter and Heather Hardy , scheduled for this Saturday’s Invicta FC 21 card, has been scrapped. Promotion officials announced the news Tuesday evening. Carpenter suffered a concussion while training and was forced to withdraw from the bout. With the fight less than a week away, Invicta FC officials were unable to locate a suitable replacement for Hardy, a popular unbeaten professional boxer who has captured title belts in two different weight classes. It was supposed to be the Brooklyn native’s MMA debut. UFC veteran Elizabeth Phillips has agreed to fight Leah Letson on short notice, bringing the Invicta FC 21 event back up to eight total bouts. The card will be headlined by a featherweight showdown between Charmaine Tweet and Megan Anderson , while Pannie Kianzad will square off with Raquel Pa’aluhi in the co-feature. Opinion: An Aging Prodigy

Illustration: K. David Bena Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * When the bout between B.J. Penn and Yair Rodriguez was announced, my immediate feeling was that it was stupid. Part of that opinion is rooted in the fact that Penn was one of the first fighters that brought me into the sport, and he has captured my imagination of what is possible as a mixed martial artist like no one has before or since. To say he’s a legend in the sport is trite; to my mind, the highs of his career represent the absolute ceiling of competitive martial arts. One of the primary appeals of martial arts is the idea that technique trumps physical advantages. Bruce Lee, for instance, was the introduction of traditional martial arts for many of us. Perhaps his most famous fight scene is against the 7-foot-2 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in “The Game of Death.” In that scene, the 5-foot-8 Lee uses a variety of techniques from different disciplines to eventually overcome an opponent who absolutely dwarfed him.

Bellator Rebooks Budd-Coenen for Bellator 174, Will Crown First Women's 145-Pound Champ

Bellator MMA is going to try to crown a women's featherweight champion once again. Women's MMA trailblazer Marloes Coenen will take on Julia Budd to crown Bellator's inaugural 145-pound women's ace on March 3 at Bellator 174 at WinStar World Casino and Resort in Thackerville, Okla. MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani first reported the latest version of the pairing. This is not the first time that the promotion has tried to put featherweight gold on Coenen or Budd. Last year, Budd-Coenen was scheduled for Bellator 155 in Boise, Idaho. When Budd suffered an undisclosed injury in training, she was replaced with Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Alexis Dufresne . Unfortunately, Dufresne weighed in at nearly 151 pounds for the bout and then further complicated matters when the overweight “Sneaky Zebra” locked on a triangle-armbar to tap the Dutch MMA pioneer in the first round in one of the year's biggest upsets. Coenen, 35, has been fighting professionally since November 2000, when she was just 19 years old. Prior to her surprising submission loss to Dufresne in May, the former Strikeforce women's 135-pound champ had won her first two bouts in the Bellator cage, earning submission victories over Annalisa Bucci and Arlene Blencowe .

Melvin Guillard, Chidi Njokuani Booked for Bellator 171 Main Event on Jan. 27

Melvin Guillard and Chidi Njokuani will square off in the Bellator 171 headliner on Jan. 27. Sherdog.com confirmed the pairing with a promotion official on Tuesday following an initial report from MMAFighting.com . The bout will be contested at a 175-pound catch-weight. Bellator 171 takes place at Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Kan., and will see David Rickels face Aaron Derrow at lightweight in the evening’s co-main event. Guillard was suspended for one year after failing a urinalysis in relation to his victory over Rickels at Bellator 159 on July 22. While the substance wasn’t revealed, “The Young Assassin” was fined $10,000 by the Kansas Athletic Commission, and the result of the fight was changed to a no contest. The KAC informed MMAFighting.com that the commission voted unanimously to reinstate Guillard before his suspension ended after the fighter successfully completed rehab. Guillard has struggled to make weight recently, missing the lightweight limit in four of his last five bouts. He hasn’t officially won a fight since stopping Gesias Cavalcante in the second frame at World Series of Fighting 11 in July 2014.

UFC Nixes Plans for Scheduled March 3 Fight Night Card in Las Vegas

We will have to wait a little longer than expected for the first Ultimate Fighting Championship doubleheader weekend in 2017. This past November, preliminary scheduling for the UFC had the promotion slated to run back-to-back cards on March 3 and 4, with UFC Fight Night 106 set for the Friday night, leading into the Saturday night's UFC 209 card at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Now, that tentative March 3 card has been removed from the calendar. MMAJunkie.com was first to report the scheduling change on Monday. This is the second notable change to the UFC's first-quarter plans. UFC 208 was originally set for Jan. 21 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., but due to a lack of credible headliners for the card, the company's Anaheim return was postponed until the summer, on Aug. 5. The UFC card set for Feb. 11 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn was then re-named UFC 208. The UFC makes its 2017 debut on Jan. 15 from Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix for UFC Fight Night 103, where B.J. Penn headlines against rising featherweight prospect Yair Rodriguez.

Manny Pacquiao to Fight Jeff Horn for WBO Welterweight Title on April 23

It looks like future Hall of Famer Manny Pacquiao is going to remain an active boxer as the Filipino senator is set to fight virtual unknown Jeff Horn. Top Rank’s Bob Arum, who promotes Pacquiao, tweeted a few days ago that he is receiving offers for the fight from Australia, Russia and the U.S., though “The Land Down Under” seems to be the leading candidate as Horn is a superstar in his Aussie homeland. The bout will be for “Pac Man’s” WBO welterweight title; Horn is currently the No. 2-ranked contender for the sanctioning body at that weight. Arum said that he expects to have a definitive location set in stone in the coming weeks and that if the bout, which could be Pacquiao’s last, is held in Australia, it could become the biggest fight that continent has ever seen.

Adrien Broner Returns Feb. 18 to Meet Adrian Granados

Polarizing former four-division world champion Adrien Broner will make his return to the ring next month when he takes on Adrian Granados. The pairing will take place on Feb. 18 at the Cintas Center at Xavier University in Broner’s hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio. Showtime will televise the action. Broner (32-2, 24 KOs) has won two consecutive bouts since losing a unanimous decision to Shawn Porter in Las Vegas 18 months ago. “The Problem” has won world titles at super featherweight, lightweight and welterweight before dropping down to super lightweight in October 2015 to win the WBA version of the belt. But after knocking out Khabib Allakhverdiev to win a championship in four weight divisions, he was stripped of his crown in next fight by missing weight badly. He is ready to continue his career, which has seen him sitting idle since last April. “I’m back at home and excited to get back in the ring,” said Broner. “I’m ready to fight. The boxing game isn’t the same without me. Granados is a solid guy who beat someone that no one thought he would beat. I know him well and I know there’s no doubt he’ll be ready to fight.

UFC Champ Tyron Woodley Announces Stephen Thompson Rematch for UFC 209 on March 4

After 25 minutes of drama at UFC 205 in November and a subsequent two months of public and social media bluster, Ultimate Fighting Championship 170-pound king Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson are going to run it back. Monday, on his podcast “The Morning Wood Show with Deez Nuts” which he co-hosts with UFC veteran Din Thomas , Woodley revealed that he would make the second defense of his welterweight title in a rematch with Thompson at UFC 209 on March 4 in Las Vegas. Woodley earned the UFC welterweight title with a scintillating knockout of Robbie Lawler at UFC 201 in Atlanta this past July. In his first defense at the UFC's Madison Square Garden debut at UFC 205, he defended the title for the first time against “Wonderboy” in a back-and-forth championship bou. Despite especially dominant first and fourth rounds, Woodley had to settle for a majority draw in his first defense. Judges Derek Cleary and Doug Crosby both turned in 47-47 scorecards, with Crosby giving Woodley a 10-8 round one, and Cleary giving “T-Wood” a 10-8 in the fourth round.
