MMA’s Greats of the States | Oklahoma: Johny Hendricks
Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe,
bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of
their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or
state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States
are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly
is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series,
the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of
all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily
need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need
to be associated with it.

Bellator 170: What to Watch For
They are two of the sport’s foremost self-promoters, and they have
been tasked with carrying the Bellator
MMA flag into 2017.
Former
Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight titleholder
Tito
Ortiz will face Chael Sonnen
in the Bellator
170 main event on Saturday at The Forum in Inglewood,
California. Meanwhile, British striker Paul Daley
meets Brennan
Ward in a welterweight co-headliner that promises plenty of
bravado and the accompanying fireworks.
Ortiz turns 42 on Jan. 23 and has long since lost his position of
relevancy at 205 pounds. Nevertheless, he remains one of MMA’s most
recognizable and polarizing figures, hence this assignment. “The
Huntington Beach Bad Boy” has gone 3-8-1 across his last 12
appearances, his victories over Ryan Bader ,
Alexander
Shlemenko and Stephan
Bonnar overshadowed by losses to Chuck
Liddell , Lyoto
Machida , Forrest
Griffin (twice), Matt Hamill ,
Rashad
Evans , Antonio
Rogerio Nogueira and Liam
McGeary . Ortiz has not competed since he failed to unseat
McGeary as Bellator light heavyweight champion and submitted to an
inverted triangle choke at Bellator 142 in September 2015.

The aging process for athletes is one of the least fun things about
sports. It’s sad to see iconic stars no longer able to compete at
the level they once did. Willie Mays’ final days with the Mets and
Johnny Unitas’ concluding year with the Chargers didn’t tarnish
their legacies, but their fans didn’t want to see them go out on
such ignominious notes. No one wants to see athletes who look much
the same as they always did but who can no longer perform in the
way that captured the public imagination in the first place.
Other celebrities are able to age more gracefully. Politicians,
actors and musicians can captivate their supporters for decades,
even if they decline to some degree mentally and physically.
However, for athletes, reality hits much harder. With most of their
lives still ahead of them, they lose the ability to do what most
defined them at the highest level.

World Series of Fighting Postpones Slated Feb. 28 Card Until March 18, Per Report
The hiccups for
World Series of Fighting continue.
Tuesday, MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani
reported that per WSOF President Ray Sefo , the
forthcoming WSOF
35 card scheduled for Feb. 28 has been pushed back until March
18.
No city or venue had yet been announced for the card when it was
scheduled for Feb. 28. The lone known fight for the card is a WSOF
heavyweight title bout featuring champion Blagoy
Ivanov making the third defense of his title, facing Ultimate
Fighting Championship veteran Shawn
Jordan .
Last October, WSOF canceled two events, originally set to be WSOF
34 and 35 from Loveland, Colo., and Everett, Wash., in order to
focus on promoting its Dec. 31 card at The Theatre at Madison

Hisako Kato Didn’t Need to Study Tape to Prep for Bellator 170 Foe Ralek Gracie
Bellator
170 will mark Ralek
Gracie ’s first mixed martial arts appearance since a decision
victory over Kazushi
Sakuraba at Dream 14 on May 29, 2010.
Not having any recent video footage to study is no issue for
opponent Hisaki
Kato , however. The Japanese knockout artist has a pretty good
idea of what the Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner’s intentions will
be when they square off at the Forum in Los Angeles on Saturday
night. The last name says it all.
“Of course I watched the videos, but they are quite old so he could
have changed a lot. The guys he fought with were wrestlers, and I’m
a striker,” Kato recently told Sherdog.com. “Of course I watched
the videos, but I didn’t really focus on them. I just focus on
myself because I know he is a Gracie; he’s gonna put the fight to
the ground. For me, I know what I have to train and I have to train
for. I didn’t really analyze his videos.”
Gracie, the founder of the Metamoris grappling series, is the son
of Rorion Gracie and the nephew of Royce Gracie .
While his grappling credentials are unquestioned, his MMA ledger
features just three fights, and Kato believes the lengthy layoff
could affect his performance come fight night.

Conor McGregor Files For Trademarks On His Name, Nickname with U.S. Patents Office
Conor
McGregor has some definite ideas about his brand and worth and
he certainly doesn't want anybody else to profit off of it.
According to an ESPN report , the Ultimate Fighting
Championship's lightweight king has applied for a series of
trademarks through his company, McGregor Sports and Entertainment
Limited. MSE has reportedly filed trademark requests for his name
“ Conor
McGregor ” and his nickname, “The Notorious,” with the U.S
Patent and Trademark office.
Both trademarks are categorized for their links to goods and
services: McGregor seeks two use his likeness in potential relation
to everything from clothing, cosmetics and toiletries to health
clubs, gyms and barber shops.
Last July, McGregor applied for trademarks with the Irish Patent
Office, including his name, nickname and “The Mac Life,”
immediately before launching his MMA and lifestyle website
TheMacLife.com later that month.
The ESPN report by Darren Rovell also notes McGregor's on-going
connection to boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather, who has filed for
more than 230 trademarks in the past six and a half years.

Beating the Odds: UFC Fight Night ‘Rodriguez vs. Penn’
Persistence has never been an issue for Ben
Saunders .
Twice released by the
Ultimate Fighting Championship , “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 7
alum made a triumphant return to the promotion at
UFC Fight Night “Rodriguez vs. Penn” and did so against the
odds. Saunders -- a modest +120 underdog, according to BetDSI.com
-- took a three-round unanimous decision from Court McGee
(-140), earning 29-28 nods from all three judges on Sunday at the
Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix.
Kicks were the story for Saunders. He unleashed a seemingly endless
string of them, zeroing in on McGee’s legs, arms, body and head.
Saunders was not surprised by the inability to finish “The Ultimate
Fighter 11” winner.
“I knew he was going to be tough,” he said. “He’s got a hardcore
chin, [and he has] never been submitted. He’s got endurance for
days. Heart and endurance are a big part of his strength. More
power to him. Both of us had nothing but respect.”
Only one other favorite was bitten by the upset bug.
Former King of
the Cage champion Frankie
Saenz (-156) continued to crash back to earth after a 3-0 start
to his UFC career, as he wound up on the wrong side of a split
decision against
MMA Lab rep Augusto
Mendes .

There are few people in the fight game with better highlight reels
than B.J.
Penn .
He knocked Din Thomas
silly with a knee and blitzed Caol Uno in 11
seconds in 2001, both of which continued to make cameos in
pre-fight promotional videos for the next decade. His list of
rear-naked chokes alone is enough to get grappling nerds giddy.
Takenori Gomi, Matt Hughes ,
Jens
Pulver , Joe Stevenson
and Kenny
Florian all ended up seconds away from sleep, usually after one
of their arms was pinned by one of Penn’s legs. Even some of his
losses have provided sensational moments: How he pieced up George
St. Pierre on the feet for a round in their first fight, when he
inexplicably slithered to take Hughes’ back and moved into a
triangle in their rematch or how he pushed back a 218-pound
Lyoto
Machida with clean shots to the face in K-1.
