TJ Dillashaw: 'I'm always going to have something to prove'

Fight for Fighters

MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world. Mixed Martial Artists should be treated like professional athletes. Fighters should have the right to know how much money a promotion is making from an event. Fans should have the right to see the best possible fights through independent rankings. Extending the Ali Act to MMA would help professionalize the sport & stop the conflicts of interests that currently exist in the sport.

Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Dillashaw vs. Cruz’

The long-awaited battle between MMA’s top two bantamweights could not have been more closely contested. Dominick Cruz moved, countered and willed his way to a split verdict over T.J. Dillashaw in the UFC Fight Night “Dillashaw vs. Cruz” main event on Sunday at the TD Garden in Boston, as the Alliance MMA pillar reclaimed the Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight title across five memorable rounds. Judges David Ginsberg and Tony Weeks saw it 48-47 and 49-46 for Cruz, while Sal D’Amato scored it 49-46 for Dillashaw. With that, the gold changed hands. FightMetric statistics point to the close nature of the fight. Cruz outperformed the Elevation Fight Team rep 112-109 in significant strikes, while Dillashaw held a 130-122 edge in total strikes. Cruz landed at a significantly higher percentage in both categories and also held a 4-1 advantage in takedowns. Still, both men had a case in terms of arguing the final decision. The emotional nip-and-tuck victory returns Cruz to the bantamweight throne a little more than two years after recurring injuries forced him to vacate it.

Travis Browne: 'I'm a statement maker' and somebody is going to sleep

"Every chance to work together with Edmond and the guys at the gym, we get into a rhythm. It sounds weird but my ears almost learn the tone of his voice, what he's expected or if there's urgency or not. You breathe and become in tune with your coach. Every time you work together, whatever he's calling out for, whatever combinations he calls for, all that takes time to get used to and get into the rhythm of the fight. It's been over a year since Coach Edmond (and I) have been working together and it gets better every time," Browne told FOX Sports.

UFC Fight Night Boston: The Forum Threads

Dominick Cruz pulled out another victory on Saturday at UFC Fight Night in Boston, and his split decision win to reclaim the UFC bantamweight title from T.J. Dillashaw had everyone buzzing on the Sherdog.com forums . The boards are running wild with discussion about which 135-pounder deserved to win the fight, with threads and polls going back and forth about the judges’ scorecards. Who do you think won? Don’t be left out -- get on the boards and let your voice be heard. Other hot topics include the decision in the fight between lightweights Eddie Alvarez and Anthony Pettis , the return of Patrick Cote , who still seems to be improving after all these years in the Octagon, and the eye pokes in the Travis Browne - Matt Mitrione bout. Intentional or not, how does a fighter poke his opponent in the eye twice and not get penalized? Why wouldn’t fighters cheat if infractions like eye pokes and fence grabbing are rarely penalized? Poll: Who Won? Cruz or Dillashaw The Ultimate POINT Fighter? Eye Poke = Automatic Deduction or DQ? Cote with the Hockey KO Poll: Alvarez vs.

The Walkmen: UFC Fight Night ‘Dillashaw vs. Cruz’

UFC Fight Night “Dillashaw vs. Cruz” on Sunday was memorable on several fronts, most notably the triumphant return of Dominick Cruz . He edged T.J. Dillashaw by split decision in the five-round main event to regain the Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight title at the TD Garden in Boston. If one thing sticks out as much as the fights themselves, it is the soundtrack to which each fighter walked to the cage. Plenty of musical genres were represented once again in Beantown, from classic rock and old-school rap to Southern rock and metal. The highlight in terms of the walkout music belonged to Cruz, who was brought to the cage by Nate Dogg’s “Nobody Does it Better” and Cypress Hill’s “How I Could Just Kill a Man.” Other standout tracks included the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Can’t Stop,” courtesy of Dillashaw; Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man,” from Blackzilians heavyweight Matt Mitrione ; Scorpions’ “Big City Nights,” courtesy of the resurgent Patrick Cote ; and Steve Ray Vaughan’s “Life by the Drop,” from “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 3 finalist Ed Herman .

Chris Wade Calls Out Sage Northcutt After Fourth Straight UFC Win at Fight Night Boston

After scouring the UFC’s archived content to research his short-notice opponent on Sunday, Chris Wade has a bigger fish in mind for his next Octagon appearance. Wade, who submitted Mehdi Baghdad with a rear-naked choke in the first round at UFC Fight Night Boston , is now quietly 4-0 within the Las Vegas-based promotion. To further raise his profile, Wade has his sights set on one of the UFC’s golden boys. “I want Sage Northcutt next,” Wade said shortly after his latest triumph. “Give him to me Dana.” Northcutt figures to be a popular call-out in the coming months, given the heavy promotional push he has received since making his UFC debut this past October. Most recently, Northcutt pocketed $80,000 for a victory over Cody Pfister in his second Octagon appearances at UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas on Dec. 10, an unheard-of number for such an unproven commodity. Of course, Northcutt is presently booked, as he will face the unbeaten Andrew Holbrook at UFC on Fox 18 on Jan. 30. The fight will be on the evening’s main card, the most prominent placement yet for the Katy, Texas, native.

MMA’s Greats of the States | Alaska: Cody McKenzie

Plenty of Americans have never set foot on the soil and snow of the nation’s largest state. With its frigid temperatures and dangerous wildlife, Alaska has long been a popular locale for adventure seekers wanting to test their mettle against Mother Nature’s wrath. Alaska is not known for producing high-level professional fighters. With that said, “The Last Frontier” is far from devoid of such exports. In fact, there have been several Alaskan mixed martial artists who have competed inside the Octagon of the Ultimate Fighting Championship . The most prominent of those is Cody McKenzie , who was born in Cordova, Alaska. Though he has yet to capture a world championship, he has locked horns with several top-tier opponents throughout his career. McKenzie started 11-0, with nine of those victories by guillotine choke, before competing on Season 12 of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series. Though he lost to Nam Phan in the quarterfinals, McKenzie appeared at the finale and submitted Aaron Wilkinson with one of his patented guillotines.

The card will air in the United States on Fox Sports 1. Matthews, 21, is 3-1 in the Octagon and 9-1 as a professional overall. “The Celtic Kid” last competed at UFC 193, where he earned a second-round doctor stoppage triumph against Akbarh Arreola . All but one of Matthews’ wins have come inside the distance. The 26-year-old Case has a more extensive 22-4 pro mark and is unbeaten in four UFC appearances. Most recently, he outpointed Yan Cabral at UFC Fight Night “Belfort vs. Henderson 3” on Nov. 7.

World Series of Fighting bantamweight champion Marlon Moraes will defend his title against Joseph Barajas on Feb. 20, the promotion announced Tuesday. The fight will headline WSOF 28 at Next Level Sports Complex in Garden Grove, Calif. NBCSN will televise the event live beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and the telecast will feature a co-main event between 135-pound prospects Timur Valiev and Chris Gutierrez . Moraes has won 10 in a row, with his last eight victories coming inside the WSOF cage. The Brazilian captured the organization’s 135-pound title by defeating Josh Rettinghouse via unanimous decision at WSOF 9 and has officially defended the crown twice. He last fought in August, where he submitted challenger Sheymon Moraes via rear-naked choke in the third round. Barajas has looked equally impressive, having only lost once in 13 fights. He’s won his last two contests, with his most recent being his WSOF debut. He stopped Erik Villalobos via punches in the third at WSOF 25 in November.

‘Cyborg’ KOs Daria Ibragimova to Retain Featherweight Title in Invicta 15 Main Event

It lasted longer than most anticipated, but Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino made sure the Invicta Fighting Championships featherweight title was not going anywhere. Justino wiped out M-1 Global vet Daria Ibragimova with a counter right hook to retain her 145-pound crown in the Invicta 15 headliner on Saturday inside The Hangar at OC Fair in Costa Mesa, California. “Cyborg” finished it 4:58 into the first round, as she posted her fifth consecutive victory. Related » Invicta FC 15 Round-by-Round Scoring Like so many others who had come before her, Ibragimova (9-2) was game but outmatched. The Russian grappler spent much of the bout clinging hopelessly to a single-leg. Justino looked bored at times and amused at others, as she defended the takedown attempts with balance and agility. The 30-year-old Chute Boxe rep shined in the standup exchanges, ripping into Ibragimova with punches and clinch knees. In the waning moments of the first round, Justino slipped a right hand and cut down her opponent with a clean right hook.

Former Bellator MMA middleweight king Alexander Shlemenko will meet Vyacheslav Vasilevsky in the M-1 Challenge 64 headliner on Feb. 19. Promotion officials announced the bout Sunday. The contest will be the first matchup in the M-1 Grand Prix Middleweight Tournament Series. M-1 Challenge 64 takes place at the Olympic Sports Complex in Moscow and also includes a heavyweight title tilt between Alexander Volkov and Denis Smoldarev . Shlemenko is unable to compete in the United States due to a three-year suspension he received from the California State Athletic Commission after having an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio at Bellator 133 against Melvin Manhoef . Shlemenko also tested positive for the steroid oxandrolone in relation to the bout. As a result, the Russian’s first-round knockout victory was overturned to a no contest, and Shlemenko has not fought since. According to a report from Bloody Elbow , M-1 Global and Bellator reached an “amicable agreement” to enable Shlemenko to fight for the Russian promotion.

UFC Fight Night Boston Results: ‘Dillashaw vs. Cruz’ Play-by-Play & Updates

Charles Rosa vs. Kyle Bochniak Round 1 Rosa lines up southpaw and hops backward, flicking out side kicks to fend off the advancing Bochniak. Leg kicks land for Bochniak early on, keeping Rosa on his back foot. Rosa comes down the middle with a straight left hand that marks up Bochniak’s eye, then goes back to side-kicking. Bochniak counters a kick with a right hand over the top; Rosa counters with another left to Bochniak’s damaged eye. A straight right counter from Bochniak sends Rosa to the ground, but when Bochniak tries to pounce and pound out his opponent, Rosa threatens with a heel hook. Bochniak pulls the leg free and allows Rosa to stand with 90 seconds on the clock. Rosa takes a kick on the body, catches the leg and trips Bochniak to the ground, then lets him back up. Rosa shoots for a takedown in the last 30 seconds, briefly puts Bochniak on the mat but can’t hold him there. Sherdog Scores Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Bochniak Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Bochniak Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Bochniak Round 2 Rosa emerges for the second round in the orthodox stance and attacks the lead leg of Bochniak with kicks.

In the latest edition of the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie Rankings, Cruz has returned to the No. 1 spot in the bantamweight rankings (and No. 3 pound-for-pound) after a narrow title win over T.J. Dillashaw at UFC Fight Night 81.

Opinion: Cruz Back Like He Never Left

Editor's note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. When last Dominick Cruz defended the Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight title, the year was 2011. His opponent was a fellow by the name of Demetrious Johnson , who was still far from being known as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. The reason why an undersized “Mighty Mouse” fought Cruz was because there wasn’t a flyweight division. Women had yet to make a splash in the UFC, and Ronda Rousey was little more than a budding star. Jon Jones had just become a champion, and that fellow named Conor McGregor was yet to be the apple of Dana White’s eye. Things change in four and a half years. Cruz, who had only fought once since that October 2011 bout, was supposed to be different. When he stepped into the cage on Jan. 17 to face T.J. Dillashaw , not a single world title holder remained from the last time Cruz defended his belt.

The Bottom Line: Stop Rewarding Fighters for Instigating Clinches

Editor's note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Many expected the most exciting bout at UFC Fight Night “Dillashaw vs. Cruz” to take place between striking dynamo Anthony Pettis and all-action slugger Eddie Alvarez on Sunday at the TD Garden in Boston. Alvarez’s wars with Tatsuya Kawajiri , Joachim Hansen and Michael Chandler are as exciting as MMA gets, and Pettis’ highlight reel of knockouts and submissions is second to none. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be, as Alvarez had a different sort of fight in mind. Following Rafael dos Anjos ’s shocking destruction of Pettis in March, Alvarez sought to take advantage of a similar game plan. He would prevent Pettis from striking at range, exploit his wrestling vulnerability and punish him on the ground. Only that didn’t happen. While dos Anjos was able to do what he wanted with Pettis and deal out tremendous punishment in the clinch and on the ground, Alvarez struggled to do the same.
