Team Nogueira | THE LEGEND

The Bottom Line: Stop Rewarding Fighters for Instigating Clinches

Editor's note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Many expected the most exciting bout at UFC Fight Night “Dillashaw vs. Cruz” to take place between striking dynamo Anthony Pettis and all-action slugger Eddie Alvarez on Sunday at the TD Garden in Boston. Alvarez’s wars with Tatsuya Kawajiri , Joachim Hansen and Michael Chandler are as exciting as MMA gets, and Pettis’ highlight reel of knockouts and submissions is second to none. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be, as Alvarez had a different sort of fight in mind. Following Rafael dos Anjos ’s shocking destruction of Pettis in March, Alvarez sought to take advantage of a similar game plan. He would prevent Pettis from striking at range, exploit his wrestling vulnerability and punish him on the ground. Only that didn’t happen. While dos Anjos was able to do what he wanted with Pettis and deal out tremendous punishment in the clinch and on the ground, Alvarez struggled to do the same.

MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world. Mixed Martial Artists should be treated like professional athletes. Fighters should have the right to know how much money a promotion is making from an event. Fans should have the right to see the best possible fights through independent rankings. Extending the Ali Act to MMA would help professionalize the sport & stop the conflicts of interests that currently exist in the sport.

The Savage Truth: One for the Ages

Editor's note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Let me start off by saying I picked Dominick Cruz to defeat T.J. Dillashaw in their UFC Fight Night 81 main event on Sunday at the TD Garden in Boston, but I’m not really sure I believed it. I just knew I didn’t want to feel like I did after he stopped Takaya Mizugaki on the heels of a three-year layoff in his last fight. I doubted Cruz then, and I just knew I didn’t want to find myself in the same boat this time around. Well, after witnessing Cruz’s dark magic once again, and despite my pick, I’m still just as surprised as last time, perhaps more. I’ve struggled to describe just how impressive his performance was, and I’m not sure it’s going to get any better with this piece. I understand there was some kvetching about the decision, and though it was close, I think the judges ultimately got it right. I still want to re-watch the fifth round, but I gave it to Cruz from cageside and had him winning 49-46, with Dillashaw convincingly taking the fourth frame.

Jamal James jab, jab, jabs his way to convincing win over Javier Molina

Prior to James' dismantling of Molina, Caleb Plant (12-0, 9 KOs) was no slouch with the distance, either. He used superior footwork and a lot of flash in working circles around Adasat Rodriguez (11-5-2, 7 KOs) before finishing the job with a huge left in the sixth that proved to be the stopper. ... Malcolm McAllister (7-0, 7 KOs) kept his knockout ratio perfect after a punishing body shot in the third opened up Tyrone Selders (9-7-1, 6 KOs) for a vicious series of hooks and uppercuts, leading referee Zac Young to step in and wave it off. ... David Benavidez (12-0, 11 KOs) did McAllister one better, getting his man Kevin Cobbs (10-2, 4 KOs) in Round 2. A nasty right to the head wobbled Cobbs, and Benavidez wasted no time, knocking Cobbs around the ring from pillar to post before the fight was stopped.

Opinion: Cruz Back Like He Never Left

Editor's note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. When last Dominick Cruz defended the Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight title, the year was 2011. His opponent was a fellow by the name of Demetrious Johnson , who was still far from being known as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. The reason why an undersized “Mighty Mouse” fought Cruz was because there wasn’t a flyweight division. Women had yet to make a splash in the UFC, and Ronda Rousey was little more than a budding star. Jon Jones had just become a champion, and that fellow named Conor McGregor was yet to be the apple of Dana White’s eye. Things change in four and a half years. Cruz, who had only fought once since that October 2011 bout, was supposed to be different. When he stepped into the cage on Jan. 17 to face T.J. Dillashaw , not a single world title holder remained from the last time Cruz defended his belt.

Opinion: The Prodigal Son Returns

Editor's note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. As an MMA writer, I try to be as objective and emotionally detached as possible. While I can proudly say I’ve checked my personal feelings at the keyboard -- and many times gone about the sobering process of betraying them -- the truth of the matter is that I’m still, at my core, a fan. So objectivity be damned: Quit playing games with my heart, B.J. Penn . “The Prodigy” last week made his comeback official. In doing so, he sent fans everywhere jolts of excitement, anxiety and that feeling you get when you’re called to the principal’s office. I don’t know how to process it all. As a storyline, it’s obviously compelling. Penn remains one of the sport’s most enigmatic figures, the heights of his success only matched by the lows on which he went out; and boy were those some lows. Following a brief reinvigoration at welterweight that saw him starch Matt Hughes in 21 seconds and become the second man ever to fight Jon Fitch in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and not lose, Penn went on to get thoroughly throttled for the remaining 44:16 of his Octagon career.

Matt Brown vs. Demian Maia scrap added to May's UFC Fight Night 87 in Brazil

But in July 2015, he got back on track with a submission win over Tim Means at UFC 189. That earned him a main event against Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Fight Night 80 in Mexico, but an injury forced him from the card. Now he’s ready to get back to work and will fight outside the United States for just the second time in his pro career of more than 10 years.

MMA’s Greats of the States | Alaska: Cody McKenzie

Plenty of Americans have never set foot on the soil and snow of the nation’s largest state. With its frigid temperatures and dangerous wildlife, Alaska has long been a popular locale for adventure seekers wanting to test their mettle against Mother Nature’s wrath. Alaska is not known for producing high-level professional fighters. With that said, “The Last Frontier” is far from devoid of such exports. In fact, there have been several Alaskan mixed martial artists who have competed inside the Octagon of the Ultimate Fighting Championship . The most prominent of those is Cody McKenzie , who was born in Cordova, Alaska. Though he has yet to capture a world championship, he has locked horns with several top-tier opponents throughout his career. McKenzie started 11-0, with nine of those victories by guillotine choke, before competing on Season 12 of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series. Though he lost to Nam Phan in the quarterfinals, McKenzie appeared at the finale and submitted Aaron Wilkinson with one of his patented guillotines.

Josh Barnett doesn't blame Werdum for UFC 196 withdrawal, but not buying the excuse

“Part of me understands that the potential of losing that belt – and what he will lost by losing that belt in terms of his money scale, his money scale and his money scale – and then everything else, is a lot, probably, for him that he feels to risk,” Barnett said. “He doesn’t want to risk the potential of walking in there, into the cage, and making leas than he’s making now. He probably feels like this opportunity to make this money, this is it. He’s 38. He’s coming into his prime. He’s had his best performances of his entire life. If he doesn’t do it now, it’s gone forever. He won’t make that money again. These are his opportunities for his paydays, so he’s fearful of losing that – understandably so. The way this game is structured, it is often win, lose, and that’s all.So I understand his fear, but should he take that fight? I think he should. I think he should step up and blast this guy – or

Top-10 Bantamweight Marlon Moraes to Defend Title in WSOF 28 Main Event

World Series of Fighting bantamweight champion Marlon Moraes will defend his title against Joseph Barajas on Feb. 20, the promotion announced Tuesday. The fight will headline WSOF 28 at Next Level Sports Complex in Garden Grove, Calif. NBCSN will televise the event live beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and the telecast will feature a co-main event between 135-pound prospects Timur Valiev and Chris Gutierrez . Moraes has won 10 in a row, with his last eight victories coming inside the WSOF cage. The Brazilian captured the organization’s 135-pound title by defeating Josh Rettinghouse via unanimous decision at WSOF 9 and has officially defended the crown twice. He last fought in August, where he submitted challenger Sheymon Moraes via rear-naked choke in the third round. Barajas has looked equally impressive, having only lost once in 13 fights. He’s won his last two contests, with his most recent being his WSOF debut. He stopped Erik Villalobos via punches in the third at WSOF 25 in November.

UFC 197 Update: Darren Elkins to Face Chas Skelly in Las Vegas on March 5

Darren Elkins will lock horns with Chas Skelly in a featherweight bout at UFC 197 on March 5. Promotion officials announced the matchup on Tuesday. UFC 197 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and is headlined by a lightweight championship clash pitting Rafael dos Anjos against Conor McGregor . In the co-main event, Holly Holm defends the bantamweight strap against Miesha Tate . A 13-time Octagon veteran, Elkins has alternated wins and losses in his last six appearances. The 31-year-old Indiana native took a unanimous decision over Robert Whiteford in his last outing at UFC Fight Night “Holohan vs. Smolka” on Oct. 24. Elkins owns wins over the likes of Hatsu Hioki , Diego Brandao and Duane Ludwig during his promotional tenure. After losing his UFC debut to Mirsad Bektic , Skelly has reeled off four straight victories within the Las Vegas-based organization. In 2015, the Team Takedown representative earned a technical knockout triumph against Jim Alers in February before submitting Edimilson Souza this past November.

Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Dillashaw vs. Cruz’

The long-awaited battle between MMA’s top two bantamweights could not have been more closely contested. Dominick Cruz moved, countered and willed his way to a split verdict over T.J. Dillashaw in the UFC Fight Night “Dillashaw vs. Cruz” main event on Sunday at the TD Garden in Boston, as the Alliance MMA pillar reclaimed the Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight title across five memorable rounds. Judges David Ginsberg and Tony Weeks saw it 48-47 and 49-46 for Cruz, while Sal D’Amato scored it 49-46 for Dillashaw. With that, the gold changed hands. FightMetric statistics point to the close nature of the fight. Cruz outperformed the Elevation Fight Team rep 112-109 in significant strikes, while Dillashaw held a 130-122 edge in total strikes. Cruz landed at a significantly higher percentage in both categories and also held a 4-1 advantage in takedowns. Still, both men had a case in terms of arguing the final decision. The emotional nip-and-tuck victory returns Cruz to the bantamweight throne a little more than two years after recurring injuries forced him to vacate it.
