No Time for the Critics

As one of the brightest young prospects in mixed martial arts, A.J. McKee has already endured his share of criticism from fans and media over his flashy personality and brash attitude. Some have labeled him a cocky upstart who has not yet earned his stripes. Others believe he rode his father’s coattails into the sport. McKee to this point has made them eat their words. The Team Bodyshop representative went 7-1 as an amateur and has won all six of his fights as a pro, finishing five of them. The 21-year-old has passed every test thrown his way. “For the critics: kiss my ass,” McKee told “I don’t really pay them any attention. People sometimes just come at me for whatever reason, but at the end of the day, it’s my feet and hands that do the talking.” Indeed they have, as McKee stopped his first five opponents in a little more than 15 minutes combined. He went the distance for the first time at Bellator 166 in December, when he largely cruised to a unanimous decision against Ray Wood . McKee admits it was not his best performance by any stretch of the imagination.

What to Watch For: Bellator 171

Chidi Njokuani can see the springboard on which his feet now rest. The former Tachi Palace Fights champion will put his six-fight winning streak on the line when he meets Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Melvin Guillard in the Bellator 171 headliner on Friday at the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Kansas. Their three-round catchweight clash at 175 pounds highlights a four-fight main card on Spike TV (9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT). Njokuani last fought at Bellator 167 on Dec. 3, when he cut down the highly regarded Andre Fialho with punches in just 21 seconds. The 28-year-old Dallas native has honed his considerable skills under Nick Blomgren, Sergio Penha and Saeksan Janjira, recording wins over Gilbert Smith , Max Griffin and Alan Jouban . Weight-cutting issues -- he has misfired on the scales on multiple occasions throughout his career -- seem to be all that stand between Njokuani and a rise to stardom. The 6-foot-3 muay Thai stylist has secured 10 of his 16 professional victories by knockout or technical knockout.

MMA’s Greats of the States | Oregon: Chael Sonnen

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it. *** Love him or loathe him, Chael Sonnen has carved out a unique place in mixed martial arts history. Hands down one of the greatest trash talkers to ever grace the sport, he has often backed up his bluster with results inside the cage or ring. Sonnen was an NCAA All-American at the University of Oregon before he transitioned to MMA, where his grappling skills made for a natural fit. He captured a few regional titles before signing with the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 2005.

The Bottom Line: Right Place, Wrong Time

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * It wasn’t so long ago that the UFC on Fox 23 main event between Valentina Shevchenko and Julianna Pena would have been of life-altering consequence to both fighters. The contest will determine the No. 1 contender for the women’s bantamweight title, a championship that has been the top-drawing combat sports belt over the past four years. Since the title was created, the 10 events featuring a women’s bantamweight title defense have drawn in the vicinity of 8.375 million buys. Earning yourself a title shot meant the sort of payday that could allow you to live comfortably for years to come. Unfortunately for Shevchenko and Pena, they have worked themselves into the immediate title mix at precisely the wrong moment. The biggest concern for the strength of the division is the fall of Ronda Rousey , the division’s cash cow.

Jose Torres Subdues Pedro Nobre in 86 Seconds to Defend Titan Flyweight Title

Jose Torres might soon outgrow his regional surroundings. The hard-charging prospect remained undefeated and did so in style, as he disposed of Pedro Nobre with first-round punches to retain the Titan Fighting Championship flyweight title in the Titan 43 main event on Saturday at the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Florida. Nobre succumbed to blows 1:26 into Round 1. Torres elected to forgo the feeling-out process and instead drew the Brazilian into a series of dangerous standup exchanges. Nobre did well with body-head combinations but only for a short time. Torres floored him with an overhand right, swarmed when he returned to his feet and sent him to the canvas again with a ringing right uppercut. A few follow-up punches followed, necessitating the stoppage. In the featherweight co-headliner, Bellator MMA alum Michel Quinones established a foothold at 145 pounds, as he captured a unanimous decision over the previously unbeaten Caio Uruguai Rocha . All three cageside judges scored it 29-28 for Quinones. The verdict could have gone either way. The two men spent much of their time trading leg kicks, and by fight’s end, they were hobbling around the cage as a result of their work.

Opinion: The Myth of Mind Games

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * It’s not uncommon to hear fighters harp on the mental demands of mixed martial arts. “The fight game is 90 percent mental, 10 percent physical,” they’ll say. It makes sense that they emphasize the aspect of the sport that isn’t immediately apparent to the folks at home, most of whom have never experienced anything remotely similar to preparing for a fight. The tedium of clocking in for work is no less present in a training camp than it is in a regular 9-to-5. Ask any fighter. There are days when you are motivated and days when you aren’t, days when everything is clicking and days when nothing seems to go as planned. There’s also the emotional rollercoaster of teetering between supreme confidence and nervousness as the fight draws nearer, as well as the general exhaustion that comes with rigorous exercise and dietary restrictions.

Rony Jason vs. Jeremy Kennedy added to UFC Fight Night 106 in Brazil

Jason finds himself in need of a win following an August 2016 loss to Dennis Bermudez. While Jason did score a May 2015 victory over Damon Jackson, that result was overturned when Jason tested positive for a diuretic, and he now stands at 1-3 in his past four official appearances.

If Yoel Slapped Nick Diaz’s Girl On The Butt, This Is What He’d Do!

Nobody keeps it as real as Nick and Nate Diaz do under the Ultimate Fighting Championship banner and Nick just proved that earlier today on social media. UFC middleweight champ Michael Bisping expects spring return – and wants a money fight

“If that’s Yoel Romero, great,” Bisping said. “(But) if it ain’t Yoel Romero, if it’s Anderson Silva, great – I know he’s piped up again (about wanting a rematch) lately. If it’s ‘GSP,’ I don’t care who the opponent is. I’m not bothered by any opponent. I’m the champion of the world, and I will take on all comers. But I want the biggest fight possible.”

Marcin Wrzosek Defends 145 Title Against Kleber Koike Erbst at KSW Stadium Show on May 24

Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki has firmed up its second title fight for the promotion's first stadium show. Poland's preeminent MMA promotion announced Monday that its May 27 “Colosseum” card from the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw will feature new KSW featherweight champion Marcin Wrzosek defending his title for the first time against slick-grappling Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Kleber Koike Erbst . The 29-year-old Wrzosek took the promotion's 145-pound title at KSW 37 in December, badly damaging Artur Sowinski 's left eye in a bloody battle to force a second-round stoppage. A veteran of the 22th season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” “The Polish Zombie” signed with KSW after his release from the Ultimate Fighting Championship, following a December 2015 split-decision loss to Julian Erosa . Erbst had a 14-bout winning streak snapped at KSW 33 in December 2015, losing a unanimous verdict to the aforementioned Sowinski for the vacant featherweight title. Since the loss, the Bonsai Jiu-Jitsu rep has won three in a row via submission, most recently choking out Leszek Krakowski at KSW 36 last October to earn his second crack at KSW gold.

Big John Says He Gave Tito His Punishment By Choking The Sh*t Out Of Him To Stop The Fight

Tito Ortiz made Chael Sonnen pay for months of trash talk when the two finally stepped into the cage at Bellator 170 last Saturday night. This was Tito’s retirement fight and he made sure to go out with a bang as he submitted Sonnen in the first round with a face crank. In fact, Ortiz held the submission for an extra few seconds which prompted referee Big John McCarthy to step in and force him to release the hold.

Tito Ortiz Ends MMA Career with First-Round Sub of Chael Sonnen at Bellator 170

Though he has struggled inside the cage throughout much of the last several years, Tito Ortiz is without question one of the most important figures in the history of mixed martial arts. Twenty years after making his debut in the sport, “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” is finally hanging up his fingerless gloves for good and he couldn’t have scripted a better ending for his Hall of Fame career. In the main event of Bellator 170 inside the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, California, Ortiz dominated hated rival Chael Sonnen before forcing him to tapout to a rear-naked choke in the opening round. Ortiz landed a pair of punches to Sonnen’s face just moments into their grudge match and quickly took the former Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight title challenger to the mat. After Ortiz escaped a relatively threatening guillotine choke, Ortiz took over and never looked back. The former UFC light heavyweight champion slithered into full mount and when “The American Gangster” rolled over in an attempt to escape the fast-approaching ground-and-pound, Ortiz seized his back and suck in the choke.
