The Savage Truth: Here We Go Again

Editor's note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. There is a highly anticipated title fight and, less than two weeks out from the event, one of the contestants has to pull out due to injury. When it becomes known the challenger isn’t going to be making it to the cage on fight night, the champion decides it isn’t in his best interest to fight someone else on short notice... err, I mean, the champion gets hurt, too. Seriously, you can stop me any time if you know where I’m going here. It was disappointing to hear that Cain Velasquez was injured yet again and wouldn’t be able to make it for his second date with Fabricio Werdum at UFC 196 . What wasn’t surprising was hearing that Werdum had questions about squaring off with Stipe Miocic on 13 days’ notice. You’ve already seen the full media barrage from the Miocic camp after Werdum pulled out of the potential title fight.

In Pictures: The Bellator 148 Fighters

Former Cage Rage champion Paul Daley -- he of the evil left hook -- will try to continue his climb on the Bellator MMA welterweight ladder when he faces Andy Uhrich in the Bellator 148 main event on Friday at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. The rest of the four-fight main card shines the spotlight on a Chris Honeycutt-Paul Bradley rematch, Raphael Butler-Tony Johnson and Patricky Freire-Ryan Couture. These are the Bellator 148 fighters, in pictures:

Chapel Made of Human Bones in Poland

Inspired by the Capuchin crypt in Rome, Father Vaclav Tomaszek began building St. Bartholomew’s Church, or Kaplica Czaszek, in Czermna in 1776. He spent the next 18 years exhuming bones from mass graves left over from years of war, disease and famine. Skulls and bones of 3,000 people were meticulously cleaned and arranged in the chapel as memorial and memento mori to visitors.

The Bottom Line: Ryan Bader’s Never-Ending Quest for Respect

Editor's note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. When Ryan Bader burst onto the Ultimate Fighting Championship scene in 2008 by knocking out Vinny Magalhaes to win the eighth season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” big things were expected of the undefeated prospect with excellent wrestling and knockout power in his fists. The UFC saw him as a potential future top contender or champion in the prestigious light heavyweight division. Now, Bader is the No. 4 contender in the UFC’s 205-pound rankings; and with a win over Anthony Johnson in the UFC on Fox 18 main event this Saturday, he is likely to receive the next title shot against the winner of Daniel Cormier - Jon Jones 2. You would think that over seven years since his UFC start, Bader has finally risen to the level that was expected of him. Yet, it still feels like there is something missing. On paper, Bader checks off many of the boxes you would want in an elite fighter.

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson targeted for UFC on FOX 19 in April

In an eight-year pro career, Nurmagomedov is 22-0 with 14 stoppages. In April 2014, the 27-year-old defeated now-champ Rafael dos Anjos, but a series of knee injuries have kept him on the sidelines as planned bouts with Donald Cerrone (May 2015) and Ferguson (December 2015) subsequently fell apart.

Fabricio Werdum Pulls Out of UFC 196 with Back Injury

UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum has withdrawn from UFC 196 . Werdum made the announcement to Brazilian media on Monday, less than 24 hours after challenger Cain Velasquez pulled out of the event. With Velasquez injured, Werdum was slated to face late replacement Stipe Miocic in the Feb. 5 card’s headliner. Now, the pay-per-view is left without a championship main event. UFC has not announced whether Miocic will remain on the card, or which bout will fill the main event slot. Currently, the co-main event position features a welterweight duel between Johny Hendricks and Stephen Thompson . Werdum explained that a back injury suffered in training last week would not allow him to compete against Velasquez, who also went down with a back ailment. “I’ve been training without kicks for the last two weeks due to a fissure in my toe,” Werdum said. “Even with that, I decided to fight Velasquez. Last time we fought, I had a serious head injury, went 40 days without sparring and fought him. “Last Friday, I pulled my back.

MMA Greats of the States | Arizona: Benson Henderson

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it. For example, reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight titleholder Robbie Lawler may have been born in San Diego, but few would recognize him as a Californian.

Backlash from UFC 196 dropout helps Werdum understand how Rousey, Jones felt

Some people talked really bad about me, mean things, and other supported me as family and friends. I was thinking how cruel people can be when I was injured and I made a really important decision. The best decision I’ve ever made in my life. I’m criticized without suffering a defeat, and I imagined how it would be if I had fought for the fans, for the promotion, for anything, and suffered a defeat. But I didn’t suffer a defeat.

Opinion: The Prodigal Son Returns

Editor's note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. As an MMA writer, I try to be as objective and emotionally detached as possible. While I can proudly say I’ve checked my personal feelings at the keyboard -- and many times gone about the sobering process of betraying them -- the truth of the matter is that I’m still, at my core, a fan. So objectivity be damned: Quit playing games with my heart, B.J. Penn . “The Prodigy” last week made his comeback official. In doing so, he sent fans everywhere jolts of excitement, anxiety and that feeling you get when you’re called to the principal’s office. I don’t know how to process it all. As a storyline, it’s obviously compelling. Penn remains one of the sport’s most enigmatic figures, the heights of his success only matched by the lows on which he went out; and boy were those some lows. Following a brief reinvigoration at welterweight that saw him starch Matt Hughes in 21 seconds and become the second man ever to fight Jon Fitch in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and not lose, Penn went on to get thoroughly throttled for the remaining 44:16 of his Octagon career.

Rafael dos Anjos: ‘Cerrone & Henderson Are Better Fighters Than McGregor’

Less than two months out from his headlining spot at UFC 197 , lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos last week returned to Brazil in order to promote the March 5 main event against featherweight ace Conor McGregor . Speaking to in his hometown of Niteroi’s beautiful City Park, dos Anjos revealed that participating in a press conference with the trash-talking Irishman was less than enjoyable. “Of course, being in a press conference is part of our job,” dos Anjos said, “but it’s not a good experience to sit for more than an hour listening to a joker perform his routine. That wasn’t funny to me.” Much has been made of the UFC’s decision to allow McGregor -- who only recently captured the company’s 145-pound belt -- to move up the scale in search of a second title. Dos Anjos acknowledged that, although McGregor undoubtedly receives preferential treatment in comparison to some other UFC champions, it is not without a reason. “Of course there’s a difference, just because of how much Conor brings to the company.

Vale Tudo Relics: Warriors War

Featuring Carlos Newton , Jose Landi-Jons , Matt Hughes , Dave Menne and Karimula Barkalaev , Shidokan Jitsu’s “Warriors War” offered up what was without a doubt one of the best middleweight tournaments ever held. It was sponsored by Naif Al-Sabah, Sheikh of Kuwait, and took place on Feb. 8, 2001. Menne emerged as the winner, but the event was also defined by a complete lack of organization. This resulted in a never-before-seen alliance between Americans, Brazilians and Canadians, who pushed back against a Russian-Kuwaiti fight-rigging scheme that only fizzled out because of the integrity of referee John McCarthy. Where are the Travel Tickets, Scale? As a reporter covering vale tudo events in Brazil in the 1990s, disorganization had ceased to come as a shock. In my travels through northern and northeastern Brazil, I had witnessed chairs and cans being thrown into the ring. I’d seen a promoter save a tournament by getting a coconut salesman from the beach to fight one hour before the show. With all of that baggage, I never imagined that an event in Kuwait, sponsored by the petrodollars of the local Sheikh, could leave me aghast.

UFC welterweight praises Conor McGregor as one of the best, the Muhammad Ali of MMA | MMA Latest News & Fights Videos l UFC Fighting Videos

“[McGregor] walks around about 180 pounds and he looks massive,” Thompson told Submission Radio. “Of course there’s a lot of shorter guys in the 170 division, you know, Johny Hendricks being one of them – he’s like 5’9” and he’s crushing it – and I think he would do well. I mean, his striking’s great. I think he would have to put on some muscle just because the guys in the division are just so much bigger. You know, they’re walking around at 195 (pounds) some of them 200 (pounds). And if you’re at 180 (pounds), yeah you’ll get down to the weight pretty easy, but man, I mean the guys in this division – look at Robbie Lawler. Look how massive that guy is, and he’s got great striking as well.

Jose Aldo to Conor McGregor: I will 'whoop your ass anywhere'

#rematch Hi everyone, i was quiet for a while because i was waiting for my rematch based on how the fight Went down, in fact I was already training for it, but apparently I was wrong. So I wanted to make something clear to UFC: for everything I have done, everything I have accepted and mostly how the fight ended, I will not accept any other fight other than a title shot .

Tomasz Narkun to Defend Light Heavyweight Title Against Andre Muniz at KSW 34

A light heavyweight championship bout between Tomasz Narkun and Andre Muniz will serve as the co-main event at KSW 34 on March 5. The Polish promotion recently announced the matchup. KSW 34 takes place Torwall Hall in Warsaw, Poland and his headlined by a heavyweight title clash between Karol Bedorf and James McSweeney . The event will be available at Narkun will be making his first title defense after knocking out Goran Reljic in the opening stanza to claim 205-pound gold at KSW 32 this past October. The 32-year-old known as “Giraffe” is 11-2 as a professional, including a 3-1 mark under the KSW banner. Muniz, 25, recently signed a multi-fight deal with KSW. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt enters the matchup on a seven-fight winning streak in which he finished all but one of his victims by way of submission.

Bellator 148’s Raphael Butler Recalls Near-Miss Matchup with Tyson Fury

Before he upset Wladimir Klitschko late last year, heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury was apparently in discussion with Bellator MMA President Scott Coker to take a fight with the California-based promotion. While that notion seems far-fetched now, as Fury is likely to take a rematch with Klitschko at some point in 2016, there is one heavyweight on the Bellator roster who believes he has some unfinished business with the outspoken Brit. “I would love to fight Tyson Fury. It would be a long time coming because when I was boxing, the name Tyson Fury came up to me as a possible fight,” Raphael Butler told “I was ready to sign the contract and his people pulled out of the contract like a month before we were supposed to fight. I would love to get that redemption.” Butler, who faces Tony Johnson on the Bellator 148 main card at Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif., on Friday night, compiled a 35-12 mark on the professional boxing circuit before turning his attention to MMA full-time. “The Silencer” hasn’t abandoned his roots entirely, however, as he served as a sparring partner for Deontay Wilder during the American champion’s last two camps.
