Pros Pick: Silva vs. Diaz

Anticipation is running high for the Anderson Silva-Nick Diaz showdown. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com It was a hypothetical matchup for which fans had long pined, and the Ultimate Fighting Championship has brought it to fruition. Former middleweight champion Anderson Silva will return to the cage for the first time in more than a year when he battles the always volatile but intriguing Nick Diaz in the UFC 183 main event on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Silva, 39, last competed at UFC 168 in December 2013, when he suffered a gruesome leg injury in his rematch with reigning middleweight boss Chris Weidman . Viewed by some as the greatest fighter of all-time, “The Spider” won his first 16 fights inside the Octagon before incurring back-to-back losses against Weidman. Diaz, meanwhile, has not fought in nearly two years. The onetime Strikeforce titleholder last appeared at UFC 158 in March 2013, when he dropped a unanimous decision to Georges St. Pierre in a failed bid to unseat the then-welterweight champion.

Dan Hardy column: I can't concentrate on anything but Anderson Silva vs Nick Diaz at UFC 183 on Saturday night

I’m finding it difficult to concentrate on anything for very long this week. It’s very rare that we are blessed with a super-fight, especially one of this magnitude. Mixed Martial Arts’ most polarizing character has stepped up to welcome the greatest of all time back into the Octagon...and I can’t wait.

Gilbert Melendez: Nobody Has Success Attempting to Stand and Trade with Nick Diaz

Nick Diaz has struggled against the styles of his last two opponents. | Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com Gilbert Melendez has had the opportunity to work closely with Nick Diaz on a number of occasions over the years. Due to his bout against Anthony Pettis on Dec. 6, the former Strikeforce lightweight champion was unable to train extensively with Diaz as the Stockton, Calif., native prepared to face Anderson Silva at UFC 183 on Saturday. However, Melendez has reason to believe that, unlike Georges St. Pierre and Carlos Condit , Silva is going to be more willing to engage in the type of battle Diaz prefers. In particular, Melendez does not think highly of Condit’s controversial unanimous decision win over Diaz for the interim welterweight strap at UFC 143. After the bout, Diaz was clearly frustrated with what he believed was his opponent’s reluctance to engage. “There’s that fine line of trying to outpoint someone to win the rounds, and then there’s the tactic of sticking and moving, to load up a flying knee or a big push kick and really engage,” Melendez said during an appearance on The Sherdog Radio Network’s “MMA Rounds” show .

The Striking of the Spider, part 2: Venom--Anderson Silva's killer ground & pound

Note the form with which Anderson throws his ground strikes. First, he prefers to keep both feet planted firmly on the ground. This allows him to stand far above his prone opponent, giving his strikes more distance with which to build momentum and power. Silva throws his finishing shots just like the punches he would throw at a standing opponent--in Frame 5, you can see how Anderson pivots on the ball of his right foot as he throws the right hand, twisting his shoulders and hips and transferring weight from right to left. This, in turn, loads the left hand, which is thrown in much the same way, with the added benefit of Anderson's right hand posted on Belfort's chest as a measuring stick, one which keeps the challenger pinned flat on his back and enables Anderson to maintain his postured up position.

I think I’m a little more willing to give a punch and take a punch. I don’t know how it’s going to translate, who’s going to be better in the MMA wrestling. I think that’s probably the exciting part of it: We’re going to have to go out there and see what’s going to happen.

'Notorious' makes it official: Jose Aldo vs. Conor McGregor set for UFC 189 in July

Aldo, meanwhile, continued his lengthy tear over the featherweight division in October when he beat Chad Mendes a second time, this time needing five rounds to beat him by decision instead of taking him out in the first round like he had done 20 months prior. He won the WEC’s featherweight belt in 2009 and has defended it nine times since then – twice in the WEC and seven times in the UFC. He’s widely considered one of the top two pound-for-pound fighters in the world.

BE Analytics: Beatdown statistics and win probabilities for UFC 183

Notes: Strike attempts are for an entire five minute round in each position (P5M) and are categorized as jab or power. A jab is just a non-power strike. Strikes are documented based on where they land or are targeted (head, body, legs), not the type that is thrown (punch, elbow, kick, knee). Visible damage rate is per five minutes the fighter is not on his back. It's hard to bust up someone's face while lying on your back. Damage percentage is per power head strike and distance head jab landed. Knockdown rate is per five minutes at distance or in the clinch off the cage. Knockdown percentage is per power head strike landed while standing. It's really hard to knock someone down if they're already on the ground. Clinch control is having the opponent pressed against the cage. Ground control is having top position. Submission attempts are per five minutes of ground control minus time spent in the opponent's guard plus time spent with the opponent in guard. A bout closeness measure towards zero means a fighter is in blowouts (win or lose) and towards 100 means he is in very close fights.

33
Tyron Woodley: Power with Focus

Pull the trigger. Let it rip. Swing for the fences. These analogous euphemisms, as well as a multitude of others, are about an MMA fighter going for the knockout, putting all their power behind a punch or a kick with designs not to pepper, but to pulverize. And it’s something top-ranked UFC welterweight Tyron Woodley is excellent at. After an uncharacteristic loss at UFC 174 against Rory MacDonald, where Woodley never uncorked or unleashed his explosive strikes, many questioned how “The Chosen One” would bounce back in his next outing. Critics and fans didn’t need to wait long, as Woodley signed up the following week to take on the surging Dong Hyun Kim in August in Macao. Once inside the Octagon, it took even less time to see how Woodley would react, as he scored a 61-second TKO of Kim. “I thought it was a must-win situation where I needed to redeem myself,” Woodley said. “I knew I was capable of fighting hard. I wanted to go out there, fight that fight and win and do it for myself and that’s what I did.” One punch floored Kim and six finished him on the ground, which earned Woodley his second Fight Night bonus and his fourth UFC win - all by knockout.

37 Kelvin Gastelum: Evolution from Prospect to Contender Complete

It’s been a chaotic ride for Kelvin Gastelum, but one he’s making sure he takes the time to enjoy. The Arizona native came to Season 17 of The Ultimate Fighter as a 21-year-old hopeful with only a handful of professional fights under his belt, and he saw the reality show as his way to gain entry onto the biggest stage in MMA. Granted, the Yuma native had found victory in all five of those fights, but with a collection of experienced fighters and several highly-touted prospects also in the tournament, there wasn’t a ton of expectations put on Gastelum winning the six-figure contract at the season’s end. Even though he scrapped his way into a showdown with Uriah Hall in the TUF 17 finals, the New Yorker’s previous wins had been so flashy and sharp, that calling Gastelum a long shot to win the bout seemed generous. He walked into his tilt with “Prime Time” intent on proving his doubters wrong, and it was a mission he accomplished when the judges’ scorecards were announced and a split decision made him that season’s “Ultimate Fighter.

Full Fight Flashback: Anderson Silva TKOs Forrest Griffin at UFC 101 | MMAWeekly.com

I remember watching this via some stream back in the days, at around 4-5am in the morning here in Europe. Shortly after the fight started, the stream went off. When I found another one, Goldie was just saying “It is all over” and Rogan just couldn’t believe what happened. I thought Silva pulled out some Mortal Kombat stuff, only later I saw how embarrassing Forrest’s performance was.

UFC 183 Odds: $100 Bet on Anderson Silva Nets $21, While Nick Diaz Pays $400

While anything can happen in the Octagon when Anderson Silva and Nick Diaz square off during their main event bout at UFC 183 “Silva vs. Diaz,” the odds are heavily in favor of “The Spider.” Bookmakers have released their latest lines for the middleweight bout, and all have listed the Brazilian as the betting favorite. The event will take place Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. According to BestFightOdds.com , the broker 5Dimes.com currently lists Silva as the favorite at -470. On the opposite end, Diaz is getting play as high as +400. In layman’s terms, a bet of $100 on Silva would net you $21 (plus your investment), while a $100 wager on Diaz would earn $400 (plus the $100 back).

43
UFC 183: Silva vs. Diaz staff picks and predictions

Zane Simon : I guess I'm taking Anderson here, because that just makes sense. But, if I'm being realistic, there's a really good chance that Anderson has fallen far enough fast enough that Diaz could be the better man on the day. Much like the recent Zaromskis vs. Gonzalez bout or Fedor vs. Bigfoot, timing can be everything. Diaz is no spring chicken in the game either, but he has a style that seems much less likely to be broken by time than Silva's. If Diaz is on point and Silva has lost a bunch of steps, then this fight could turn in favor of the 209 quick. Still, that's highly speculative, and speculation aside, I gotta go with the Spider. Anderson Silva, by TKO, Round 3.

The Pugilist: Nick Diaz, Daniel Mendoza and the Sweet Science of Bruising

It is most likely that you never heard of Daniel Mendoza, which is of no surprise since his last public match took place in 1820. A descendent of Spanish Marranos, he was the father of scientific boxing, whose success helped elevate the position of Jews in 18th and 19th century English society. He was also notoriously quick tempered with a propensity to fight whenever he felt slighted in the least, having once famously gotten into three altercations while on his way to be a spectator for a match (the three reasons being that someone’s cart had cut him off in the street, he felt cheated by a shopkeeper, and he didn’t like how a man was looking at him).
