Fight for Fighters

MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world. Mixed Martial Artists should be treated like professional athletes. Fighters should have the right to know how much money a promotion is making from an event. Fans should have the right to see the best possible fights through independent rankings. Extending the Ali Act to MMA would help professionalize the sport & stop the conflicts of interests that currently exist in the sport.

Anthony Johnson on Ryan Bader: Beat a top 3 opponent then call for a title shot

"I respect Bader. He's on a five-fight win streak, and I came into the UFC on a three-fight win streak and I got a title shot by my fourth fight so I understand where he's coming from," Johnson told FOX Sports. "He feels like he should be the next in line for a title shot, but at the same time, I think you have to beat somebody in the top three to say something like that.

Opinion: McGregor Promotions, Better Posters and Other Loud Statements

Editor's note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. McGregor Promotions may never exist, even though it’s as if we’re already living it every time Conor McGregor speaks into a microphone. It’s no wonder the UFC 196 press conference is still at MMA’s forefront after a full week. The McGregor Show dominates everything in its sphere. The Ultimate Fighting Championship has notoriously been anti-co-promotion since it sent Chuck Liddell to Japan, saw Quinton Jackson stop Liddell and then never hosted Pride Fighting Championships star Wanderlei Silva in return, as promised. Yet from within the UFC’s ranks, the “Notorious” Irishman seems to be forcing the UFC’s hand at co-promoting with him rather than the UFC promoting him like it does every other fighter in the company. It’s easy to read between the lines during McGregor’s shtick and see the specific strokes he paints with his brilliant verbal brush.

Ev Ting Guillotine Submits Eric Kelly in One Championship ‘Clash of Heroes’ Main Event

Ev Ting picked the perfect time to come through with perhaps the finest performance of his career. The New Zealand-based Malaysian lightweight submitted Eric Kelly with a third-round guillotine choke in the One Championship 38 “Clash of Heroes” headliner on Friday at Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Kelly (12-2) conceded defeat 1:58 into round three, his run of three consecutive victories at an end. Ting (11-3) pushed a merciless pace. The 26-year-old Auckland MMA export committed to knees, both standing and on the ground, and methodically chipped away at Kelly’s resolve. Kelly saw a brief moment of hope come and go near the conclusion of round two, where he climbed to the back and set his hooks. However, Ting scrambled into top position, blasted him with a soccer kick and got busy with his ground-and-pound. Desperation forced Kelly into his last mistake in the third round. There, while trying for a takedown, he wandered into a high-elbow guillotine and was left with no choice but to tap. In the co-main event, Filipino standout Eduard Folayang captured a unanimous decision from Tetsuya Yamada in their three-round confrontation at 155 pounds.

Don't make a mistake against Anthony Johnson – but then, we knew that already

It’s the oldest promise in fight sports: the promise of power that transcends ability. When you really need to lean on it especially hard, you call it the puncher’s chance. That’s about all Johnson had going for him in that scheduled match-up against Jones, but it was enough, considering how easily Jones had already run through everyone else. Then he ran through that red light with just as little apparent concern, and we all know what happened next.

Anthony Smith Stops Josh Neer in Opening Round of Victory FC 47 Main Event

There was no love lost between 15-time Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Josh Neer and Anthony Smith , which bred some trash talk and ill-will between the two veterans leading up to their Victory FC 47 main event. But when the bell rang to start the scuffle in Baxter Arena in Omaha, Smith wasted little time in ending the fight, which capped off the first-ever VFC fight card on UFC’s Fight Pass. Neer had already toppled Smith more than two years ago via third-round rear-naked choke. “Lionheart” promised the same thing wouldn’t happen again and he was accurate. In fact, he never allowed the fight to go to the ground because he wound up stopping “The Dentist” via standing TKO in the opening frame. After a few minutes of sporadic strikes between the two and Neer unable to drag his taller middleweight adversary to the canvas, it wasn’t long before Smith’s reach advantage came into play. A thudding right to the head wobbled Neer, who retreated to a corner to regroup. Smith, sensing a stoppage, quickly closed the gap and refused to allow Neer to escape. From there, the local fighter teed off on Neer with bruising punches and elbows to the head.

Opinion: ‘GGG’ Situation Highlights Boxing’s Matchmaking Problem

Certified knockout artist and current WBA (Super), IBO, IBF and interim WBC middleweight titleholder Gennady “GGG” Golovkin has his eyes set on big fights in 2016; and he could clearly use them considering that his pay-per-view numbers for his October fight against David Lemieux didn’t exactly set the world on fire. The fight everyone wants to see is “GGG”- Saul “Canelo” Alvarez . However, Team Canelo isn’t quite ready for that fight to happen yet despite Alvarez holding the WBC title and Golovkin being his mandatory challenger. A deal was struck that would allow both “GGG” and “Canelo” to take a fights this spring in hopes of staging the highly anticipated battle in September. That shouldn’t be a problem, right? Well, for Golovkin, finding an opponent for his April fight date is turning out to be quite the task. Initially, a unification bout against undefeated Billy Joe Saunders -- he recently defeated Andy Lee for the WBO title -- seemed like a formality. That was until Saunders ended up scoffing at the offer, which has kept that fight from seeing the light of day.

Scott Coker Hopes to Have Bellator Heavyweight Champ Minakov Back Within 6 Months

Late last year, Bellator MMA President Scott Coker sounded like he was just about done with reigning heavyweight champion Vitaly Minakov . At promotion’s most recent tent-pole event this past November in St. Louis, Coker alluded to a meeting with members of Minakov’s management in hopes of getting the fighter back in the Bellator cage. “If we don’t have an answer in the next month or two, we’ll probably just move on from there,” Coker told Sherdog.com in a video interview . Fast forward to the present day, and Coker still does not have a concrete answer as to when the champion will next defend his belt in Bellator. However, both sides have been making progress in negotiations, which is likely why Minakov has not been forced to vacate his title despite not fighting for the promotion since April 2014. “If we can get him back and ready to defend his title in the next six months, I think that would be fine,” Coker recently told Sherdog.com. “Basically it’s a contract issue. We’re trying to work through it. It’s just something that ‘s part of this business.

Ryan Bader knows Anthony Johnson can be broken

"That's pretty much his M.O., everybody knows that about him," Bader told FOX Sports when speaking about Johnson. "When he's on and he's getting you, he's an amazing fighter. Look at the fight with Phil Davis. That went three rounds and he was comfortable on his feet and I think that's where he trains a lot going through those combinations where his body doesn't get tired doing that. I think his body is used to that but when you start wearing on him, dragging him down, breaking him down and beating him when he's trying to get up from the bottom.

Ben Rothwell: ‘Laying Waste to Entire Division,’ Not Title Shot, Is No. 1 Priority

It’s getting more and more difficult to ignore the accomplishments of Ben Rothwell . The Kenosha, Wisc., native added an impressive notch to his resume in the UFC on Fox 18 co-main event on Saturday night, as he became the first person to earn a true submission victory against Josh Barnett , tapping out the former heavyweight king with a modified guillotine choke 3:48 into round two. It was Rothwell’s fourth straight UFC triumph -- the second-longest active streak in the division -- as well as his fourth straight finish. “I’ve been doing this for a long time. I’m all about paying your dues. I’ll be surprised if I get overlooked now because I feel like I’ve paid some dues,” Rothwell said at Saturday’s post-fight press conference. “I’ve shown the world what I can do. When I first came to the UFC I was win and lose, win and lose. It is what it is. I wasn’t showing what I could do. “Why should you get rewarded when you’re losing fights? Now that I’ve put a string together and shown that I’m a contender and one of the best in the world, now we’ll see.
