UFC on Fox 23 Prelims: Sam Alvey, Raphael Assuncao, Jingliang Li Notch Mile-High Victories

Sam Alvey tapped a few more grains of sand out of the Nate Marquardt hourglass. Straight punching combinations and leg kicks were the weapons of choice, as the Team Quest standout claimed a unanimous verdict over Marquardt in the featured UFC on Fox 23 prelim on Saturday at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Alvey (30-8, 7-3 UFC) was awarded 29-28 marks across the board, as he posted his fourth consecutive victory. After a tepid first round, Alvey seized control in the second. There, he sent probing jabs and straight lefts crashing through Marquardt’s defenses, resulting in two cuts and substantial damage to the former Pancrase and Strikeforce champion’s left eye. Marquardt (35-17-2, 13-10 UFC) responded in Round 3, where he dragged his opponent to the mat, transitioned to his back and set his hooks. Alvey stayed calm under duress, escaped to his feet and rode out the remaining time to a decision. Marquardt, 37, has lost seven of his last 10 fights. Chidi Njokuani Plows Through Overmatched Melvin Guillard in Bellator 171 Main Event

Chidi Njokuani did what was expected of him and barely broke a sweat in doing so. Armed with six-inch height and eight-inch reach advantages, the former Tachi Palace Fights champion systematically dismantled Melvin Guillard , cemented his place near the top of the Bellator MMA welterweight division and cruised to a unanimous decision in the Bellator 171 headliner on Friday at the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Kansas. Six of the possible nine rounds were scored 10-8 for Njokuani (17-4), as he earned 30-25, 30-24 and 30-26 nods from the cageside judges. Guillard (32-17-2) was never competitive. Njokuani blasted him with kicks while standing and wrecked him with ground-and-pound whenever they spilled onto the canvas. He nearly finished Guillard with a liver kick in the closing seconds of Round 2, where the bell gave “The Young Assassin” a brief reprieve. It mattered not. Njokuani followed a knee to the head with a takedown inside the first minute of the third round and assaulted the New Orleans native with punches and elbows from top position before denying his bid for a Hail Mary choke.

Matches to Make After UFC on Fox 23

Valentina Shevchenko removed the only remaining obstacle between her and a crack at the Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s bantamweight title. The 28-year-old Kyrgyzstani kickboxer submitted Julianna Pena with a second-round armbar in the UFC on Fox 23 main event on Saturday at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Pena tapped 4:29 into Round 2, as she saw her four-fight winning streak grind to a halt and lost for the first time in nearly four years. If “The Ultimate Fighter 18” winner underestimated Shevchenko’s ground skills, it was a grave mistake. Pena did all she could to stay in her comfort zone, as she pursued a relentless clinch and attacked with close-quarters knee strikes to the legs and body. Shevchenko did not flinch and instead surprised “The Venezuelan Vixen” with a pair of takedowns inside the first five minutes. Pena responded with a takedown of her own to start the second round but settled in full guard with no apparent intention to improve her position. Shevchenko inched her legs towards the Spokane, Washington, native’s shoulders, wheeled her hips into place and bit down on the armbar.

UFC on FOX 23 Results: Valentina Shevchenko submits Julianna Pena | BJPenn.com

Round one begins and after a brief feeling out process Julianna charges forward and press Shevchenko against the cage. Valentina tries to reverse the position but Pena is not having it. Ratings Report — “UFC on FOX 23: Shevchenko vs. Pena” Disappoints

Despite having a great night of fights, “UFC on FOX 23: Shevchenko vs. Pena” did not pull the numbers experts expected it to. Paige VanZant, Michelle Waterson, and Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino have all seen success with ratings after headlining FOX/FS1 broadcasts, but it appears as Valentina Shevchenko and Julianna Pena, who sit atop the women’s bantamweight division, could not get the job done last night.

UFC on Fox 23 Results - Shevchenko, Masvidal, Ngannou and score big wins

Alex Caceres (12-10) was coming into this fight after headlining UFC FN 92 in a loss to Yair Rodriguez.  Tonight he faced Jason Knight (17-2) who was riding a two fight win streak. Jason Knight came out and landed some heavy punches in the first round.  Caceres used speed to counter Knight and landed some shots of his own.  Knight landed a big shot that knocked Caceres off balance and to the mat for a moment. He followed that with a big slam and took Alex’ back, and sunk the hooks. He looked to have the arm under the chin but Alex popped out as the round ended. It was a fun first round that I scored for Knight.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Ending Bantamweight’s Wild Year

Francis Ngannou on Jan. 28 earned his fifth win in the Ultimate Fighting Championship in just 14 months, as he clattered former heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski in just 92 seconds at UFC on Fox 23 in Denver. However, that does not mean Ngannou is alone in shaking up his division. On account of his brutal blistering of “The Pitbull,” the 30-year-old Ngannou -- one of MMA’s most coveted heavyweight prospects in years -- jumps from the Sherdog.com bubble list into a plush spot at No. 8 in our ranking of the sport’s big men. Meanwhile, the 37-year-old Arlovski’s fourth straight loss signals his exit from the top 10 after a surprising late-career run. On the same bill, Jorge Masvidal earned his signature breakthrough victory on network television after nearly 14 years in the game, knocking out Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone twice in six minutes. After a string of close fights and questionable decisions in his welterweight tenure, “Gamebred” is firmly in the UFC title race at 170 pounds. The changes at welterweight are not just confined to Masvidal’s resounding win over Cerrone.
