Josh Koscheck to Face Mauricio Alonso at Bellator 172 on Feb. 18 in San Jose

After a couple delays, Josh Koscheck ’s Bellator MMA debut is set for Feb. 18. The California-based promotion announced on Tuesday that Koscheck will face Mauricio Alonso in a main card bout at Bellator 172 . Additionally, a previously announced main card bout pitting Adam Piccolotti against Brent Primus has been canceled after Piccolotti withdrew from the contest due to injury. Bellator 172 takes place at the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif., and is headlined by a heavyweight showdown between Fedor Emelianenko and Matt Mitrione . The main card airs on Spike TV at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT, while the preliminary draw will stream on Bellator.com and the Bellator Mobile App. A preliminary middleweight pairing between Anatoly Tokov and Francisco France was also announced on Tuesday. Koscheck signed with Bellator MMA in June 2015 after exiting the UFC on a five-fight losing skid. The former NCAA Division I national champion wrestler was initially paired with Matt Secor at Bellator 148 but had to withdraw from that pairing due to injury, while another ailment forced “Kos” to pull out of a proposed bout against Paul Daley at Bellator 158.

The Walkmen: UFC on Fox 23

The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday returned to the city where it all began in 1993: Denver. UFC on Fox 23 provided scintillating action at the Pepsi Center, with super submissions and wicked knockouts. The soundtrack to the event took on a personality all its own. American Top Team ’s Jorge Masvidal walked to the cage to Giorgio Moroder’s “Scarface Theme Song” ahead of his showdown with Donald Cerrone in the co-main event. Cerrone went with his customary entrance song, as Kid Rock’s “Cowboy” trumpeted his arrival. Other standout tracks included Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” (Bobby Nash), 50 Cent’s “Many Men” (Alexandre Pantoja), Pennywise’s “Bro Hymn” (Eric Spicely), George Thorogood and The Destroyers’ “Bad to the Bone” (Jordan Johnson), 2Pac’s “Ballad of a Dead Soulja” (Jason Gonzalez), Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic” (Eric Shelton), Cole Swindell’s “You Should Be Here” (Jason Knight) and Train’s “Hey Soul Sister” (Sam Alvey). UFC on Fox 23 Prelims: Sam Alvey, Raphael Assuncao, Jingliang Li Notch Mile-High Victories

Sam Alvey tapped a few more grains of sand out of the Nate Marquardt hourglass. Straight punching combinations and leg kicks were the weapons of choice, as the Team Quest standout claimed a unanimous verdict over Marquardt in the featured UFC on Fox 23 prelim on Saturday at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Alvey (30-8, 7-3 UFC) was awarded 29-28 marks across the board, as he posted his fourth consecutive victory. After a tepid first round, Alvey seized control in the second. There, he sent probing jabs and straight lefts crashing through Marquardt’s defenses, resulting in two cuts and substantial damage to the former Pancrase and Strikeforce champion’s left eye. Marquardt (35-17-2, 13-10 UFC) responded in Round 3, where he dragged his opponent to the mat, transitioned to his back and set his hooks. Alvey stayed calm under duress, escaped to his feet and rode out the remaining time to a decision. Marquardt, 37, has lost seven of his last 10 fights. Chidi Njokuani Plows Through Overmatched Melvin Guillard in Bellator 171 Main Event

Chidi Njokuani did what was expected of him and barely broke a sweat in doing so. Armed with six-inch height and eight-inch reach advantages, the former Tachi Palace Fights champion systematically dismantled Melvin Guillard , cemented his place near the top of the Bellator MMA welterweight division and cruised to a unanimous decision in the Bellator 171 headliner on Friday at the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Kansas. Six of the possible nine rounds were scored 10-8 for Njokuani (17-4), as he earned 30-25, 30-24 and 30-26 nods from the cageside judges. Guillard (32-17-2) was never competitive. Njokuani blasted him with kicks while standing and wrecked him with ground-and-pound whenever they spilled onto the canvas. He nearly finished Guillard with a liver kick in the closing seconds of Round 2, where the bell gave “The Young Assassin” a brief reprieve. It mattered not. Njokuani followed a knee to the head with a takedown inside the first minute of the third round and assaulted the New Orleans native with punches and elbows from top position before denying his bid for a Hail Mary choke.

Matt Bessette Stops Kevin Croom to Retain Featherweight Title in CES MMA 41 Headliner

Matt Bessette admitted after the CES MMA 41 main event that he could not see himself as a true champion until he defended his featherweight title. After he put a whipping on Kevin Croom , it seems safe to assume that “The Mangler” feels like one now. Bessette on Friday electrified the crowd inside the Twin River Casino in Lincoln, Rhode Island, as he tore into his challenger, battered Croom around the cage and bloodied his face with a bevy of punches, knees and kicks. He turned up the heat in the third round, where he floored “The Hard-Hitting Hillbilly” with a vicious counter right hook and did not relent until the job was done. The 32-year-old Bessette unleashed a tsunami of punches to the head and body, paired them with clinch knees to the head and finished off his opponent with a high kick. Referee Kevin MacDonald intervened 32 seconds into Round 3, as Croom crumbled in a heap against the fence. In the cruiserweight co-headliner, Patrick Walsh was too much for Kevin Haley to handle and ragdolled his counterpart from the start. He struck for an early takedown and mauled Haley on the ground for much of the opening stanza.

UFC President Dana White Doesn’t Expect Ronda Rousey to Fight Again

Dana White is among the many who believes that Ronda Rousey may be done with fighting. The UFC president recently spoke with the ex-bantamweight queen, and while he said that her “spirits are good” and she’s in a “real good place,” he expects that Rousey will move on to the next phase of her life. “In the conversation I had with her, if I had to say right here right now — and again, I don’t like saying right here right now because it’s up to her — but I wouldn’t say she fights again,” White said on the UFC “Unfiltered” podcast. “I think she’s probably done. She’s going to ride off into the sunset and start living life outside of fighting.” After taking more than a year-long hiatus following the first loss of her professional career, Rousey returned to the Octagon at UFC 207 on Dec. 31. The results weren’t pretty, as the Olympic judoka suffered a 48-second technical knockout loss to reigning 135-pound champion Amanda Nunes in the evening’s main event. White said that Rousey made enough money her rise to prominence in the UFC, when she became perhaps the biggest crossover star the sport had ever seen.

Women's MMA Trailblazer Aisling Daly Announces Retirement After Brain Scan Abnormality

I will be officially retiring from the sport of MMA. This past year a routine brain scan showed up evidence of an abnormality, the remnant of a small haemorrhage that had taken place at some point in the months previous. It would be unlikely I would be medically cleared to compete again, even in the event I could find a doctor who would clear me it would be very unwise for me to continue to compete with the risks involved. My career has ended prematurely but I’m very grateful for my long list of achievements, I am and will always be ‘Ais the first’ for so many things, my legacy set in stone in the history of Irish mixed martial arts. I am the countries first ever world champion, the first and only female to ever do it. I have and always will give back to the sport which has given me so much. I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart the fans who have supported me tirelessly through various parts of the journey. Without this support there is no sport of MMA as we know it. I would like to thank my good friends and close team mates, there is no substitute for the genuine loyalty built between people over years of blood, sweat and tears.

26
The Bottom Line: McGregor-Mayweather a Bad Idea for Everyone in MMA, Save One

With his press conference on Saturday in Manchester, England, Conor McGregor made it clear he’s committed to aggressively pursuing a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mayweather himself has been outwardly receptive to the possibility, as well, and it’s no mystery why given the risk/reward ratio for the boxing legend. A McGregor-Mayweather fight would be a box office bonanza; and with the amount of money involved, it’s easy to understand why McGregor himself would be interested. The likely problems with the fight would apply to pretty much everyone else around him, from his sport to his company to his fans. Ardent combat sports fans are savvy enough to recognize the importance of the rules to any fight. A boxer isn’t going to tend to do well under MMA rules, and an MMA fighter isn’t going to tend to thrive under boxing rules. There will of course be the occasional upset, but on balance, it’s a bad bet to compete against someone who has been training for years and years under his or her particular rule set. Combat sports organizations know this, and for years, the ones with the power have protected their athletes against the athletes from other sports.

Dana White: Nick Diaz Turned Down Proposed Bout vs. Robbie Lawler

Nick Diaz has been eligible to return to UFC competition since August, but thus far, it appears that nothing the promotion has to offer interests the Stockton, Calif., native. According to UFC President Dana White, Diaz recently balked at a big-ticket showdown with a former welterweight champion. “I offered Nick Diaz the [Robbie] Lawler fight and he turned it down,” White said on the UFC “Unfiltered” podcast. “Lawler accepted the fight. I’m looking for something else for Lawler right now.” Diaz hasn’t competed since facing Anderson Silva at UFC 183 in January 2015. After the bout, he was initially suspended five years and fined $165,000 by the Nevada Athletic Commission for testing positive for marijuana. Diaz eventually reached a settlement with the NAC to reduce the sanction to 18 months and $100,000. Lawler, meanwhile, hasn’t been in action since losing his 170-pound belt to Tyron Woodley at UFC 201 this past July. He was supposed to return against Donald Cerrone at UFC 205 in New York but ultimately withdrew from that bout, citing the need to recover from his knockout defeat to Woodley.

Matches to Make After UFC on Fox 23

Valentina Shevchenko removed the only remaining obstacle between her and a crack at the Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s bantamweight title. The 28-year-old Kyrgyzstani kickboxer submitted Julianna Pena with a second-round armbar in the UFC on Fox 23 main event on Saturday at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Pena tapped 4:29 into Round 2, as she saw her four-fight winning streak grind to a halt and lost for the first time in nearly four years. If “The Ultimate Fighter 18” winner underestimated Shevchenko’s ground skills, it was a grave mistake. Pena did all she could to stay in her comfort zone, as she pursued a relentless clinch and attacked with close-quarters knee strikes to the legs and body. Shevchenko did not flinch and instead surprised “The Venezuelan Vixen” with a pair of takedowns inside the first five minutes. Pena responded with a takedown of her own to start the second round but settled in full guard with no apparent intention to improve her position. Shevchenko inched her legs towards the Spokane, Washington, native’s shoulders, wheeled her hips into place and bit down on the armbar.
