Team Nogueira | THE LEGEND

6 Robbie Lawler Keeps Welterweight Title in UFC 195 Split Decision Over Carlos Condit

Robbie Lawler and Carlos Condit gave until they could give no more. Lawler (27-10, 12-4 UFC) retained the Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight title with a split decision over Condit in the UFC 195 headliner on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. In a bout sure to show up on year-end awards lists in December, scores were 48-47 for Condit, 48-47 and 48-47 for Lawler. Condit (30-9, 7-5 UFC) utilized output and diversity to keep the champion at bay for extended chunks of time. According to preliminary FightMetric figures, the “Natural Born Killer” outdistanced Lawler in total strikes, 198-78, and significant strikes, 196-78. Condit was the far busier fighter, throwing 327 more strikes than the American Top Team veteran. Yet it was not enough to sway the judges completely. Lawler knocked down the challenger with a stiff right hand in the second round, smashed him with a forearm shiver in the third and made his final pitch for a decision in the fifth, where he unleashed a violent burst of elbows, punches, knees and kicks.

Sherdog.com’s 2015 All-Violence Team - 2015 All-Violence Team

I’ve been watching mixed martial arts most of my life, and chronicling it has been my chosen professional for nearly a decade. As time rolls on and as the Ultimate Fighting Championship schedule accelerates, MMA internationalizes and there are more and more fights happening every single day, I wonder if I’ll grow tired. I wonder when seeing two humans locked in a cage destroying their physical well-being for prizes and doing shockingly violent things to one another will sour me. Perhaps I will suddenly find myself numb and immune to the once-thrilling high. Just kidding. People will be trapping themselves in cages for money for eons to come, and until my body is dirt and worms, I’ll be endlessly fascinated and seduced by the bloody and gruesome art that prizefighters can create on a canvas. I’m anything but alone on this accord. This is Sherdog.com’s 2015 All-Violence Team. If you’re uninitiated or lack anything resembling intuition, here is the mandate. This is where MMA’s most vicious, technical and thrilling artists have their works hung and curated.

Matches to Make After UFC 195

Neither man blinked, and neither man cracked under the enormous pressure of the moment. Robbie Lawler kept the Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight title on his mantle with a contentious split decision over Carlos Condit in the UFC 195 main event on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Judges Derek Cleary and Chris Lee saw it 48-47 for Lawler, while judge Tony Weeks scored it 48-47 for Condit. Some called it a robbery. Many others viewed it as an early contender for “Fight of the Year.” FightMetric data favors Condit. He outpaced Lawler in total strikes, 177-93, and significant strikes, 176-92, and outlanded him in all five rounds. However, as seasoned MMA observers know, not all strikes are created equal. Lawler dropped the “Natural Born Killer” with a right hand in the second round, blasted him with a forearm shiver in the third and had him reeling with a wild assortment of punches, elbows, knees and kicks in the fifth. Force oftentimes trumps volume in the hurt business, and Lawler connected with more of the impactful blows.

UFC 195: The Forum Threads

UFC 195 kicked off 2016 with a bang Saturday night, but when the night came to an end, all anyone could talk about was the decision in the welterweight championship bout between Robbie Lawler and Carlos Condit . The Sherdog.com forums are full of threads discussing the judges’ decision, some with great facts and some just plain stupid. Regardless of how you scored the five-rounder, you have to admit it was another amazing title fight. Don’t forget to hit up the forums and chime in with your opinion in a thread or even a poll. Also getting some play on the boards tonight was Stipe Miocic ’s big stoppage win over Andrei Arlovski , as well as strong showings from can’t-miss prospects Brian Ortega and Michael McDonald . Last but not least was Dustin Poirier ’s dominating performance which put a halt to the Joseph Duffy hype train and ended any thoughts of “Irish Joe” rematching Conor McGregor . Condit got robbed! “But you look at things like this, Ronda Rousey, you know, I think she fought somewhere like 11 or 12 fights, which is not a bad thing. Laila Ali went undefeated and was dominating too. After Ronda Rousey fought I think 9, 10, 11 fights, it didn’t even take that long, she got all types of endorsements, movies, and everything. Laila Ali did the same thing in better fashion. Ronda Rousey, she’s a good looking woman when she put it on. Laila Ali is a drop-dead gorgeous woman; I mean a naturally beautiful woman and can kick ass, but you never heard them [the media] saying when she had I think somewhere around 10, 11, 12 fights that she was the baddest woman to ever fight on the planet. And what’s so crazy, I don’t really know the McGregor guy; never seen him fight. I heard his name actually from one of the runners that works for our company; a little kid named Ken Hopkins, he’s a runner and takes care of a lot of the daily business. The Walkmen: UFC 195 ‘Lawler vs. Condit’

The most important piece of any Ultimate Fighting Championship event is the action that takes place inside the Octagon. However, the combatants who walk through the cage doors and put their lives on the line like to feel good about themselves before they engage in fisticuffs. UFC 195 “Lawler vs. Condit” on Saturday produced walkout songs from a variety of artists, but the hip hop community was represented best. House of Pain’s overplayed “Jump Around” made an appearance thanks to Brian Ortega , as did Eminem’s “Soldier,” courtesy of former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski . The MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas also played host to a number of off-kilter tracks. Robbie Lawler retained the UFC welterweight title by the skin of his teeth in the main event, scoring a split decision over Carlos Condit . The “Ruthless” one tore the roof off the building with Sam and Dave’s classic “Hold On, I’m Coming.” Like the song suggests, Lawler held on until his vaunted power came through for him late in the fifth round and provided him with the final push he needed.

24
Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - ‘Ruthless’ Reigns

Robbie Lawler remains the No. 1 welterweight in the world after nearly being dethroned by Carlos Condit at UFC 195 . The champ appeared to be down on the scorecards following four rounds of well-executed range striking from Condit, but a remarkable fifth-round surge was enough to sway the judges and keep Lawler on the throne by way of a razor-thin split decision. Condit came up just short in his second bid for undisputed UFC gold, though his stock was undoubtedly raised by what was perhaps the finest performance of his 13-year MMA career. While an immediate rematch would seem to make sense, the UFC has already appointed a new No. 1 contender for Lawler’s belt in the form of Tyron Woodley . Meanwhile, Condit stated after the bout that he is contemplating retirement. The co-main event of the Jan. 2 card saw Stipe Miocic cut down former heavyweight champ Andrei Arlovski with a barrage of punches after only 54 seconds. The victory could well put Miocic in line for a shot at the winner of the Fabricio Werdum - Cain Velasquez rematch on Feb.

26 UFC 195 By the Numbers

While the final verdict might have been controversial, the UFC 195 headliner between Robbie Lawler and Carlos Condit somehow exceeded the lofty expectations that preceded it. After five scintillating rounds, Lawler retained his title via split decision at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night. It was a verdict that could have gone either way: the champion landed the harder shots, while Condit had a clear edge in total volume. With such a memorable five-round battle comes plenty of figures to examine. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 195, with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com. Related » UFC 195 Round-by-Round Scoring 2: UFC champions to win two title fights via split decision after Lawler captured a split verdict over Condit. “Ruthless” also took a split decision over Johny Hendricks at UFC 181. Beating the Odds: UFC 195

Abel Trujillo saw the doubt and shrugged. A +135 underdog according to BetDSI.com, Trujillo authored the only upset on the UFC 195 main card, as he submitted Tony Sims (-160) with a guillotine choke on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Trujillo finished it 3:18 into round one, rebounding from back-to-back losses to Gleison Tibau and Tony Ferguson . Elevation Fight Team’s Sims landed some counter punches and defended an early takedown, but a poor decision to try a takedown of his own proved to be his undoing. The 30-year-old wandered into the choke and a second straight defeat in the Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight division. The prelims saw three upsets. Drew Dober was a slight underdog at +179 against Scott Holtzman (-211), who replaced the injured Erik Koch on short notice. Dober used takedowns and ground-and-pound to secure a unanimous decision and hand Holtzman his first professional loss. Meanwhile, highly touted Irishman Joseph Duffy entered his three-round battle with American Top Team ’s Dustin Poirier as a -149 favorite, only to wind up on the wrong side of a unanimous verdict: 30-26, 30-27 and 30-27.

UFC 195 Medical Suspensions: Dustin Poirier, Kyle Noke Get Potential 6-Month Sits

Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight Dustin Poirier and middleweight Kyle Noke could be sidelined for six months after both men suffered broken noses at last Saturday’s UFC 195 . The Nevada Athletic Commission on Monday released its list of medical suspensions from the event, which took place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Poirier, who prevailed over Joseph Duffy in a high-stakes undercard matchup, must have his nasal fracture cleared by a doctor or else sit out until July 2. The same is true for Noke, who dropped a narrow split decision to Alex Morono and also suffered a left elbow strain during the three-round bout, per NAC notes. Early winner Sheldon Westcott received the only other lengthy suspension from the bill, as the Canadian welterweight must have his right hand and left knee cleared or else stay out of action until July. Surprisingly, UFC welterweight champ Robbie Lawler and challenger Carlos Condit seem to have emerged from their five-round battle relatively unscathed. Both men received two-month suspensions with an order for no contact in training until Feb.

37 UFC 195 Salaries: Champion Robbie Lawler Tops Payroll with $500,000 Purse

Robbie Lawler held on to his Ultimate Fighting Championship title last weekend in Las Vegas, but win or lose, the welterweight champion was always going to be UFC 195 ’s high earner. Lawler took home a flat $500,000 in “show” money with no additional bonus for winning, according to figures released Monday by the Nevada Athletic Commission. Carlos Condit , who gave the champ all he could handle for five full rounds, pocketed a check for $315,000. Co-main event heavyweight Andrei Arlovski earned the event’s next highest purse with a flat $250,000 in defeat. “The Pit Bull” outearned the man who punched him out in just 54 seconds, Stipe Miocic , whose check totaled $120,000. Note: The disclosed purses reported by state athletic commissions do not include any performance-based or discretionary bonuses that may be awarded to a fighter by the promotion. Additionally, the reported figures do not reflect any deductions made by the commission for taxes, insurance, etc., and do not include any sponsorship money that a fighter may acquire for their performance.

Thoughts & Shots: UFC 195

Editor's note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. LAS VEGAS -- Robbie Lawler might want to set his alarm clock, as it seems he has a proclivity for waiting until the last possible minute to punch the gas in his Ultimate Fighting Championship title fights. Then again, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The welterweight champion dropped the hammer in the fifth and final round of what unfolded into an epic clash with challenger Carlos Condit and eked out by the narrowest of margins yet another come-from-behind win to keep the 170-pound strap at UFC 195 on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Like we saw in each of his two fights with former champion Johny Hendricks , Lawler’s bout with Condit came down to a single contested round. This time, the swing round was the third. Condit notched the first and fourth, while Lawler banked the second and fifth. The story of the fight was Condit’s unrelenting assault being pitted against Lawler’s ability to land with his signature power when he did uncork his much more selective arsenal.

Sherdog.com’s 2015 Fighter of the Year - McGregor

1. Conor McGregor We should have seen it coming. Rewind to this time last year. Of all the fighters coming off superlative years, of all the burgeoning and blazing stars of the sport, only one of them had the clairvoyance to know where he would end up by year’s end: the man they call “Mystic Mac.” Entering 2015, McGregor was still plagued by questions and doubters. He had run roughshod over inferior foes, they said; the Ultimate Fighting Championship was handpicking opponents for him to look good against; he had yet to face a stud wrestler; his ground game was completely untested and unproven; he was being promoted because of his trash talk, not his skill. Such accusations brought comfort to the high school coach types who hated his cockiness, and they put staunch McGregorites in a defensive uproar. However, the man himself could not seem to be bothered by any of it. As we would all come to learn in due time: Losers focus on winners, and winners focus on winning. McGregor has done nothing but convincingly and devastatingly win.
