Brock Lesnar Receives Sanction for Anti-Doping Policy Violation From USADA

USADA conducts the year-round, independent anti-doping program for all UFC athletes. USADA is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental agency whose sole mission is to preserve the integrity of competition, inspire true sport, and protect the rights of clean athletes. In an effort to aid UFC athletes, as well as their support team members, in understanding the rules applicable to them, USADA provides comprehensive instruction on the UFC Anti-Doping Program website (www.ufc.usada.org) regarding the testing process and prohibited substances, how to obtain permission to use a necessary medication, and the risks and dangers of taking supplements as well as performance-enhancing and recreational drugs. In addition, the agency manages a drug reference hotline, Drug Reference Online (www.ufc.globaldro.com), conducts educational sessions, and proactively distributes a multitude of educational materials, such as the Prohibited List, easy-reference wallet cards, and periodic athlete alerts.

Sherdog.com’s 2016 Story of the Year

It was in May when rumors of an impending Ultimate Fighting Championship sale began to gain momentum. During an appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show,” UFC President Dana White shot down and ESPN.com report that Zuffa was in “advanced talks” to sell the company, with at least four potential interested bidders in the hunt. “We’re not up for sale,” White said. “We’re always working on deals and our expansion globally. I’ve been saying since this thing came out, ‘No, we’re not for sale,’ but let me tell you what, if somebody shows up with $4 billion, we can talk. We can definitely talk.” White’s denial, as the running joke inside the MMA bubble goes, told savvy observers the sale was probably all but finalized. After all, it would not be the first time the promotion figurehead told the media one thing and the exact opposite happened. Sure enough, some two months later, Zuffa cashed in on what was a longshot investment back in 2000, selling the world’s largest mixed martial arts promotion to William Morris Endeavor and International Management Group (WME-IMG) for a reported $4 billion.

The Bottom Line: Ronda Rousey Goes Big in Victory or Defeat

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * There’s a life cycle to the careers of most elite MMA fighters. First is the rise to prominence, fighting on smaller shows before making it to the big leagues and then into the title mix. They then have their run at peak fame and success. Inevitably, they can no longer compete at the elite level, and they gradually move down the card. If they really don’t want to retire, they finally find themselves back at the smaller shows at which they started. Few MMA superstars burst onto the scene out of nowhere; fewer still disappear with little warning. Instead, they tend to fade. Ronda Rousey ’s career, whether you ultimately view her in a favorable or unfavorable light, has not followed that traditional mold. She was a dominant champion and outspoken star within a year of turning pro. She reached heights of mainstream notoriety few fighters have ever reached.

USADA Suspends Ex-UFC Heavyweight Champ Brock Lesnar for 1 Year

Brock Lesnar has been suspended for one year by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for failing two drug tests in relation to his UFC 200 bout vs. Mark Hunt . That sanction falls in line with the punishment recently levied by the Nevada Athletic Commission, which suspended the former heavyweight champion for one year and fined him $250,000. Lesnar tested positive for the estrogen blocker clomiphene in an out-of-competition drug test on June 28 as well as an in-competition test on the day of UFC 200. In his first bout since December 2011, Lesnar defeated Hunt via unanimous decision in their July 9 heavyweight clash. The NAC overturned that victory to a no contest on Dec. 15. The $250,000 fine Lesnar received only represented a fraction of his $2.5 million purse for the fight. Lesnar will be eligible to return to active competition on July 15, 2017, one year from the date he was provisionally suspended by USADA. Lesnar has made no commitment to any further plans regarding MMA. However, according to USADA, “all UFC athletes serving a period of ineligibility for an anti-doping policy violation are required to remain in the USADA registered testing pool and make themselves available for testing in order to receive credit for time served under his or her sanction.

Bryan Caraway Injured; Jimmie Rivera in Need of Opponent at UFC Fight Night 103

It looks like Bryan Caraway ’s recent wave of success will have to wait a little longer to continue thanks to an injury in training. Caraway was slated to face fellow bantamweight Jimmie Rivera at UFC Fight Night 103 on Jan. 15, but the Las Vegas resident has withdrawn from the bout. MMAjunkie.com was the first to report the news of Caraway’s exit from the UFC Fight Night 103 card. Caraway, who has back-to-back wins over Eddie Wineland and Aljamain Sterling , has been dealing with a nagging shoulder injury since December. “Kid Lightning” was hoping to continue the momentum from his May win over Sterling, but there is no word on when he’ll be able to resume training and, more importantly, fight again. Attempts at reaching Caraway and his Xtreme Couture team were unsuccessful. Rivera, who has won a whopping 19 consecutive fights, is still likely to fight on the bill, but a last-minute replacement opponent has yet to be determined. UFC Fight Night 103 goes down inside Talking Stick Resort in Phoenix, Ariz. The main card will be televised live on FS1 beginning at 10 p.

Vitaly Bigdash Gets New Opponent for Title Defense At One ‘Quest for Power’

One Championship announced Tuesday afternoon that middleweight contender Marcin Prachnio has suffered an injury in training and had to be removed from his championship bout against Vitaly Bigdash on the One “Quest for Power” event on Jan. 14. Poland’s Prachnio, who has won seven in a row, will be replaced by Aung La N Sang . “The Burmese Python” has won four straight inside the One cage and now finds himself vying for the promotion’s 185-pound title on short notice. Bigdash won the promotion’s 185-pound belt back in October 2015 by savagely knocking out Igor Svirid . A knee to the head followed by a torrent of punches ended things 36 ticks into the second at One Championship 32, but the Russian hasn’t fought since. One Championship officials also revealed that Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev will take on Georgi Stoyanov while Igor Subora will oppose Sherif Mohamed to round out the card. The event will take place at the Jakarta Convention Center in Jakarta, Indonesia.

UFC Veteran Shawn Jordan to Face Heavyweight Champ Blagoy Ivanov at WSOF 35

Next month, the World Series of Fighting heavyweight title will be on the line. During its WOSF 34 broadcast on Dec. 31, the promotion confirmed that incumbent heavyweight champion Blagoy Ivanov would defend his heavyweight strap against Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Shawn Jordan in the new year. The Ivanov-Jordan bout is set to take place on Feb. 25, at a date and city yet to be named, as part of WSOF 35. The 32-year-old Jordan exited the UFC after losing a single bout to Ruslan Magomedov in October of last year. After compiling a 7-4 mark inside the Octagon, the former Louisiania State University tailback made the move to World Series of Fighting and after a rote showcase fight against Ashley Gooch -- which Jordan won via knockout in the first round – earned himself a title shot against the promotion's incumbent champ. Since entering the WSOF ranks, the world sambo champion Ivanov, 30, has won three in a row, holding one-sided victories over Smealinho Rama , Derrick Mehmen and Josh Copeland in order to earn the promotional crown.

This Month’s MMA Birthdays: Jake Shields Turns 38

When Jake Shields retires from mixed martial arts, he will do so as one of the greatest welterweights of all-time. The former Strikeforce , Shooto and EliteXC champion celebrates his 38th birthday on Jan. 9. A two-time All-American wrestler at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, California, Shields made his professional MMA debut on Oct. 23, 1999 and never looked back. He went 11-4-1 across his first 16 appearances -- the run included an upset of Hayato Sakurai in Japan -- and captured the Shooto welterweight championship along the way. Between Nov. 12, 2005 and Oct. 23, 2010, Shields rattled off 15 consecutive victories, excelled in multiple weight classes and defeated a string of accomplished contemporaries: Martin Kampmann , Dan Henderson , Jason Miller , Robbie Lawler , Paul Daley , Mike Pyle , Carlos Condit and Yushin Okami . Shields’ career-defining tear ended at UFC 129, where he lost a five-round decision to the incomparable Georges St. Pierre in a failed bid to claim Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight gold.

MMA’s Greats of the States | Ohio: Mark Coleman

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it. *** A state known for its passion for football and political influence, Ohio has been a mixed martial arts hotbed for years. Fighters like reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight titleholder Stipe Miocic and newly minted UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt are carrying on the tradition, but it was Mark Coleman who blazed the trail for fellow Buckeyes. Coleman was a decorated amateur wrestler, as he won a national title at Ohio State University in 1988, captured three consecutive gold medals at the Pan American Games (1990-92) and represented the United States at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.

Opinion: The Two Types of Defeat

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * The new school year in Korea begins with the new calendar year. As such, I got to know my new batch of students this week. Introductory classes are always boring and a little dry, since they mostly exist to learn names, highlight important dates and go over expectations. However, the first day is when I explain the theme of my class, which is really what I try to make the theme of my life in general: to embrace failure. It’s a typical teacher truism, and I’m aware of how cheesy it can sound, but I genuinely believe it. We are, after all, human, and failure is inevitable. What matters is not avoiding failure but developing the ability to learn from it. UFC 207 on Friday provided two case studies in how to fail and how now to fail. Especially for the “New Year-New Me” resolution crowd, the ways in which former champions Dominick Cruz and Ronda Rousey dealt with their defeats are instructive.

Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Retires Again Following Rizin Grand Prix Victory

Mirko Filipovic has announced his retirement — again. For the second time in less than two years, “Cro Cop” is calling it a career — albeit under entirely different circumstances than his last announcement in November 2015. The Pride Fighting Championships and UFC veteran recently revealed his decision in an interview with Nova TV (translation via Croatia Week ). “That was definitely my last tournament. I have health problems and this is definitely the end of my career,” he said. “I have announced my retirement before, but this is definitely it.” Filipovic is coming off a trio of victories in Rizin Fighting Federation’s open-weight grand prix. The 42-year-old began the tournament with a second-round stoppage of Bellator MMA talent Muhammed Lawal on Dec. 29 before scoring back-to-back first-round knockouts of Kaido Hoovelson and Amir Aliakbari on New Year’s Eve. Filipovic said that he will remain active in the sport and already has “offers from abroad.” He previously announced his retirement in 2015 after a shoulder injury forced him to pull out of a scheduled clash with Anthony Hamilton at a UFC Fight Night event in South Korea.

Kunchenko captured his title last April at M-1 Challenge 65 when he stopped then-champ Murad Abdulaev after four rounds of torment. He has since defended his crown with a unanimous decision over Abdulaev in a rematch at M-1 Challenge 72 last month. The Tyumen, Russia, native is a highly-touted fighter and is considered by many as one of the best welterweights not signed to the UFC. He’ll likely have a sturdy test in front of him in Rakhmonov. Rakhmonov took home gold medals at the World Mixed Martial Arts Association and Asia World Championships while in the amateurs and has continued his dominance in the pros. The Kazakhstani has quickly amassed a 7-0 record. Most recently, he choked out Michal Wiencek at M-1 Challenge 59 in just 49 seconds. M-1 Challenge 75 will be streamed live from Moscow on M1Global.tv. Several more bouts will be announced in the coming weeks.

Ranking all 13 UFC pay-per-view events from 2016 | FOX Sports

UFC 201 wasn’t a bad UFC pay-per-view by any means. Current UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley knocked out hard-hitting champion Robbie Lawler in stunning fashion in the main event, Jake Ellenberger caught Matt Brown with a nasty body kick and Nikita Krylov scored yet another finish to highlight the prelims. But outside of that, the event just didn’t fill up the excitement meter the way other PPVs have in 2016.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Ending Bantamweight’s Wild Year

Once 2016 got rocking and rolling last January, we were treated to a nearly immediate restructuring of the bantamweight division. It is only fitting that the year ended in a similar fashion. Twelve months ago, Dominick Cruz recaptured the Ultimate Fighting Championship 135-pound title, earning a split decision over T.J. Dillashaw in one of the year’s finest fights. However, after not losing an MMA fight for nearly 10 years, Cruz’s reign would not last until 2017, as a former Dillashaw stablemate at Team Alpha Male, Cody Garbrandt , turned in a stupendous performance at UFC 207 to take the UFC title and bantamweight supremacy. For 25 minutes, the heavy-hitting Garbrandt danced, mocked and pelted Cruz on the feet in a way no one ever has. His outstanding championship title capture was not only a technical sight to behold, but the win was Garbrandt’s fourth this year. In a year full of outstanding campaigns, few had a 2016 as good as Garbrandt, who was clearly the year’s breakout fighter. Of course, speaking of 135 pounds, Garbrandt-Cruz was not even the UFC 207 main event.
