Ronda’s Boxing Coach Hits Mitts, Draws Criticism For Technique Displayed

Please enable Javascript to watch this video The blame for UFC star Ronda Rousey’s recent string of bad performances has been firmly placed on her decision to remain with head coach Edmond Tarverdyan. Rousey’s coach had repeatedly told the media that he’s trained world champion boxers many times and that Ronda’s skill level was equally as good.

USADA Suspends Ex-UFC Heavyweight Champ Brock Lesnar for 1 Year

Brock Lesnar has been suspended for one year by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for failing two drug tests in relation to his UFC 200 bout vs. Mark Hunt . That sanction falls in line with the punishment recently levied by the Nevada Athletic Commission, which suspended the former heavyweight champion for one year and fined him $250,000. Lesnar tested positive for the estrogen blocker clomiphene in an out-of-competition drug test on June 28 as well as an in-competition test on the day of UFC 200. In his first bout since December 2011, Lesnar defeated Hunt via unanimous decision in their July 9 heavyweight clash. The NAC overturned that victory to a no contest on Dec. 15. The $250,000 fine Lesnar received only represented a fraction of his $2.5 million purse for the fight. Lesnar will be eligible to return to active competition on July 15, 2017, one year from the date he was provisionally suspended by USADA. Lesnar has made no commitment to any further plans regarding MMA. However, according to USADA, “all UFC athletes serving a period of ineligibility for an anti-doping policy violation are required to remain in the USADA registered testing pool and make themselves available for testing in order to receive credit for time served under his or her sanction.

This Month’s MMA Birthdays: Jake Shields Turns 38

When Jake Shields retires from mixed martial arts, he will do so as one of the greatest welterweights of all-time. The former Strikeforce , Shooto and EliteXC champion celebrates his 38th birthday on Jan. 9. A two-time All-American wrestler at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, California, Shields made his professional MMA debut on Oct. 23, 1999 and never looked back. He went 11-4-1 across his first 16 appearances -- the run included an upset of Hayato Sakurai in Japan -- and captured the Shooto welterweight championship along the way. Between Nov. 12, 2005 and Oct. 23, 2010, Shields rattled off 15 consecutive victories, excelled in multiple weight classes and defeated a string of accomplished contemporaries: Martin Kampmann , Dan Henderson , Jason Miller , Robbie Lawler , Paul Daley , Mike Pyle , Carlos Condit and Yushin Okami . Shields’ career-defining tear ended at UFC 129, where he lost a five-round decision to the incomparable Georges St. Pierre in a failed bid to claim Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight gold.

8’s 2016 Story of the Year

It was in May when rumors of an impending Ultimate Fighting Championship sale began to gain momentum. During an appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show,” UFC President Dana White shot down and report that Zuffa was in “advanced talks” to sell the company, with at least four potential interested bidders in the hunt. “We’re not up for sale,” White said. “We’re always working on deals and our expansion globally. I’ve been saying since this thing came out, ‘No, we’re not for sale,’ but let me tell you what, if somebody shows up with $4 billion, we can talk. We can definitely talk.” White’s denial, as the running joke inside the MMA bubble goes, told savvy observers the sale was probably all but finalized. After all, it would not be the first time the promotion figurehead told the media one thing and the exact opposite happened. Sure enough, some two months later, Zuffa cashed in on what was a longshot investment back in 2000, selling the world’s largest mixed martial arts promotion to William Morris Endeavor and International Management Group (WME-IMG) for a reported $4 billion.

11’s 2016 Breakthrough Fighter of the Year

Cody Garbrandt entered 2016 as a promising but unproven prospect and left it as the Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight titleholder. It was a meteoric rise, to say the least. The ink dried on Garbrandt’s remarkable campaign at UFC 207 on Dec. 30, as he struck gold at 135 pounds with a five-round unanimous decision over Dominick Cruz at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. He swept the scorecards with 48-46, 48-47 and 48-46 marks from the judges, improved to 11-0 and cemented himself as the Sherdog “Breakthrough Fighter of the Year.” Cruz could not cope with the challenger’s speed, power and precision. Garbrandt attacked the legs early on and then went headhunting. He opened a horrendous gash on Cruz’s left eyebrow in the third round and floored him twice in the fourth, first with a clean right hook and later with a left. Needing a finish, Cruz spent the final five minutes trying to chase down the Uhrichsville, Ohio, native. His pursuit appeared to win him the round but failed to net the desired result. “I always was comfortable in there.

Jolly, meanwhile, suffered his first career defeat at UFC Fight Night 74, as he was knocked out in the opening stanza by Misha Cirkunov . The Austin, Texas, native won his first five professional appearances on the regional circuit.

With Rousey coming back to face Amanda “The Lioness” Nunes for her championship title at UFC 207 after taking over a year off from her first professional MMA loss against Holly Holm, Rousey was finished by TKO in the very first round by Nunes. The Bottom Line: Ronda Rousey Goes Big in Victory or Defeat

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * There’s a life cycle to the careers of most elite MMA fighters. First is the rise to prominence, fighting on smaller shows before making it to the big leagues and then into the title mix. They then have their run at peak fame and success. Inevitably, they can no longer compete at the elite level, and they gradually move down the card. If they really don’t want to retire, they finally find themselves back at the smaller shows at which they started. Few MMA superstars burst onto the scene out of nowhere; fewer still disappear with little warning. Instead, they tend to fade. Ronda Rousey ’s career, whether you ultimately view her in a favorable or unfavorable light, has not followed that traditional mold. She was a dominant champion and outspoken star within a year of turning pro. She reached heights of mainstream notoriety few fighters have ever reached.

Paul Daley Puts Weight Cut Issues, Koscheck Rivalry Behind Him Heading Into Bellator 170

Paul Daley had a rough second half of 2016. After losing to Douglas Lima in a likely No. 1 contender’s bout at Bellator 158 in July, “Semtex” was pulled from a proposed bout against Derek Anderson at Bellator 163 due to a difficult weight cut . Daley actually made weight at 171 pounds, but was removed from the card on the day of the bout for precautionary reasons. The British slugger is set to return to the cage at Bellator 170 on Jan. 21, when he will square off with fellow knockout artist Brennan Ward in the evening’s co-main event. Daley, who has struggled making weight on more than one occasion, doesn’t anticipate any issues leading up to his bout with Ward. “Things didn’t go according to plan for the last event I was scheduled to compete. I made the weight, but what happened after making the weight which was a problem,” Daley said during a recent conference call. “Obviously we ironed it out. We’re on target to make the weight again. Not so drastically this time. “We should have everything back on point as it has been and ready to compete in what is going to be the most exciting fight on the card.

Rose Namajunas explains why she wants 'money fight' with Michelle Waterson | FOX Sports

“As much as a killer as Jessica Andrade is or Claudia Gadelha, as much as they are formidable opponents and somebody I would like to face one day, it just doesn’t seem like the most marketable thing for me. I think people want to see me fight no matter, no matter who the opponent is, but why not? Why not put two pretty girls in there that can also throw down, that both beat Paige, both know taekwondo or karate, it just makes sense. It doesn’t quite make sense for me to take fights that won’t generate the most noise. I’m trying to make money here as well as be the best in the world. So she just makes the most sense for both.”

We’ve got a decent grasp of what it takes to be the best fighter, we’ve been doing this for a while so whether it be TJ or Cruz or the winner of (Bryan) Caraway and I heard Caraway say Cody’s dodging him, he needs to get the fight maybe just for saying that cause that’s insane, but Caraway versus (Jimmie) Rivera is coming up and that’s No. 3 in the division.

Bryan Caraway Injured; Jimmie Rivera in Need of Opponent at UFC Fight Night 103

It looks like Bryan Caraway ’s recent wave of success will have to wait a little longer to continue thanks to an injury in training. Caraway was slated to face fellow bantamweight Jimmie Rivera at UFC Fight Night 103 on Jan. 15, but the Las Vegas resident has withdrawn from the bout. was the first to report the news of Caraway’s exit from the UFC Fight Night 103 card. Caraway, who has back-to-back wins over Eddie Wineland and Aljamain Sterling , has been dealing with a nagging shoulder injury since December. “Kid Lightning” was hoping to continue the momentum from his May win over Sterling, but there is no word on when he’ll be able to resume training and, more importantly, fight again. Attempts at reaching Caraway and his Xtreme Couture team were unsuccessful. Rivera, who has won a whopping 19 consecutive fights, is still likely to fight on the bill, but a last-minute replacement opponent has yet to be determined. UFC Fight Night 103 goes down inside Talking Stick Resort in Phoenix, Ariz. The main card will be televised live on FS1 beginning at 10 p.
