The Fighter & The Kid

This podcast has jumped to the top of my UFC/MMA podcast list - but c'mon, once a week?. I really feel like Brendan and Bryan should be able to do at least 2 eps a week, or maybe 2 hours a pop - I mean, what else do these guys have to do during the day? Brendan habitually mispronouncing every major UFC fighter's name on the roster is a nice touch, too. I also want to hear more about Bryan's mad greco skills. I think he should do each episode shirtless.

The story of how Donald Cerrone came to fight Benson Henderson on 15 days' notice

Henderson, a former champ in both the now-defunct WEC and UFC, handed Cerrone one-third of his six professional losses, both in the WEC. In their first meeting, the two went to the scorecards in a “Fight of the Year” candidate. Henderson won via unanimous decision. In their second meeting, just six months later, Henderson caught Cerrone in a guillotine choke and ended the fight in less than two minutes.

Gustafsson Requests USADA Drug Testing for ‘Rumble’ Ahead of UFC on Fox 14 Bout

. | Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com Alexander Gustafsson says that he has been tested by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) ahead of UFC on Fox 14 , and he would like his opponent, Anthony Johnson , to do the same. “A request from Sweden has been sent to US Anti Doping commission to come and test me,” Gustafsson wrote on his Facebook page. “This is the way it's done in Sweden, no matter where you are, you are under control which I really appreciate. I want my sport to be clean so everyone compete under the same terms. “Therefore, I would like to request that the same tests applies to my competitor Rumble Johnson. I want us both to show the world that we are clean top athletes competing in the UFC on equal terms.” The USADA is responsible for managing the anti-doping for all United States Olympic Committee “recognized sport national governing bodies, their athletes and events.” UFC President Dana White recently said that the promotion would abandon its plan for year-round drug testing . Instead, the UFC will fund state athletic commissions to handle the random drug screenings.

Coked up Jon Jones enters rehab after failed pre-UFC 182 drug test

He's still champion, he still won the fight, but Jon Jones appears to be losing his battle with drugs.  Yahoo Sports reports that a random drug test conducted on December 4th came back positive for benzoylecgonine, one of the principal chemicals in cocaine. As strange as it may seem, cocaine isn't a banned out of competition substance by the NSAC, so not only did they not have the power to stop the fight from going forward, but there's no changing the result either. Unless the UFC wants to strip Jones, the belt is still his.

Pope Francis declares evolution and Big Bang theory are real and God is not 'a magician with a magic wand'

But Pope Francis’s comments were more in keeping with the progressive work of Pope Pius XII, who opened the door to the idea of evolution and actively welcomed the Big Bang theory. In 1996, John Paul II went further and suggested evolution was “more than a hypothesis” and “effectively proven fact”.

UFC, WSOF, Bellator fighters offer 2015 health and fitness tips for us schlubs

“Cardio, cardio, cardio. Make sure your cardio is good. It’s not about lifting weights anymore. When you lift weights, you put on all this body mass. We were all born to get to a certain size. We were designed to be a certain height or a certain size, so when you get to the gym and all you’re doing is pumping weights, you’re putting too much pressure on your heart. That makes for more health issues, and that makes for a shorter life. So just do pull-ups and pushups. If you’re going to lift weights, make it really, really light weights. Explosive stuff. Keep running, and keep on your cardio. Don’t try to become some big meathead.”

UFC champ Jon Jones named to Forbes' '30 Under 30: Sports World’s Brightest Young Stars'

A win would mark his ninth title bout victory, which would be good for third-most in UFC history.”

Why People Are Moving to the Town Without Wi-Fi

At Green Bank Elementary-Middle School, right next door to the telescope, you’d expect to find teenagers bemoaning the unavailability of the cool gadgets they see on TV. But that’s not the case. According to one seventh-grader, plenty of kids in Green Bank have smartphones, and although they can’t get a signal, they’ve found a work-around. By connecting to a home wi-fi network (that the telescope interference protectors apparently haven’t picked up on), kids don’t need a cell network to talk to their friends—they can just use the new texting functions in apps like Facebook and Snapchat. Teenagers and technology, it seems, will always find a way.

Despite 'disappointing' end to career, Tim Sylvia would have liked a second crack at Frank Mir

"This is the second fight I've had problems where, the fight before this I was supposed to fight in Maine and I hurt my knee. Now, this MRI. What's really irritating is I could've fought, but the athletic commission in Connecticut, they're a pain in the ass. They saw a suspect of concussions or whatever. I'm like, 'Yeah, I've been fighting for 16 years, played semi-pro football for three years. I've had some concussions.' I think if you look at any fighter after 16 years, he's going to have that on his brain."

What Corey Hill's horrific injury can teach us about trauma, memory and recovery

But then, once he stops and thinks about it, he can’t be sure if he really said that or just thought it. It’s one of many tricks of memory that the traumatic event played on him, not unlike what happened when he woke up in the hospital with the entire gruesome episode momentarily walled off in some inaccessible corner of his mind. That wall soon came down, though. Then the events of that night began to coalesce into one awful narrative, something that later sunk its roots deep into his memory, leaving Hill with the same question people with traumatic memories are sometimes never able to answer: Now what?

Jon Jones wouldn't be first fighter to come back strong from cocaine problem

Johnny Tapia led an extremely hard life, and the end result is not something anyone would want to pattern themselves after by any means. But he was a fighter in and out of the ring, and he took a major setback and a problem in his life, and he did come back very strong from that. Tapia's best years were still ahead of him when he lost his license in 1991. He could have lost his career for good, but he didn't. If Jon Jones can get himself squared away, there's no reason to believe that he won't be able to follow at least that portion of Tapia's example, and come back to maintain his spot as the best fighter in mixed martial arts.

Joe Schilling Inks Multi-Fight Deal with Glory, Expected to Compete on Feb. 6

Joe Schilling plans on competing in Bellator and Glory. | Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com Joe Schilling (18-6, 11 KO’s) is back in the Glory ranks. The Los Angeles-based fighter has signed “a multi-fight deal” with the organization and will have the first fight of his new contract on Feb. 6 at Glory 19, sources tell Sherdog. His opponent will be Robert “The White Dragon” Thomas (7-2, 5 KO’s), a 21-year-old Canadian who garnered a considerable reputation on the muay Thai circuit in North America before crossing over into professional kickboxing. Schilling’s last Glory appearance was in June 2014 when he fought in the eight-man “Last Man Standing” tournament in his home city of Los Angeles, winning two bouts but losing a decision to Russian rival Artem Levin in the final. Thomas also has a decision loss to Levin. He made his Glory debut against the top middleweight when Levin was left without an opponent for the Glory 16 “Denver” event in May 2014. Thomas then bounced back with a stoppage win over Glory veteran Mike Lemaire at Glory 18 in November.

Video: UFC Fight Night Boston promo featuring Conor McGregor

It's expected that McGregor, who is currently a -1100 favorite on some betting websites , will walk through Siver, officially clinching him a title shot vs. Jose Aldo . There's obviously the chance that Siver plays spoiler and blows up the UFC's plans, making all of these ads and interviews moot, but realistically speaking I don't see much reason to believe that this is anything but a McGregor win. I consider it a positive that the UFC isn't pretending that every fight they make is incredibly close and competitive. This was designed to be a showcase fight for McGregor and while I personally would've tried to at least make more of a deal about Siver's top 10 ranking, you might as well promote it as such.

But I’ve got a foolproof plan: When you get your money, spend every penny of it. Blow it all, until you’re actually broke come the next fight. So you’re just as hungry as you were before the first one. So I’m in the process of blowing every penny of that. Every f*ckin’ penny of it, yeah?
