7’s Pound-for-Pound Top 10

To say that 2016 was a chaotic year at MMA's upper echelon would be an understatement. In the Ultimate Fighting Championship , there were 10 title changes, and that doesn't even include the interim titles that former pound-for-pound king Jon Jones and new P4P entrant Max Holloway won. And speaking of Holloway's curious 145-pound interim title, Conor McGregor didn't even have to lose a bout in the Octagon in order to drop his featherweight title, which was stripped off of him by his promoter in late November. Excluding our No. 2 entrant Daniel Cormier , who didn't actually defend his UFC title on the year, there are only two UFC champions who started 2016 with their gold and kept it: women's strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk , the queen of MMA, and naturally, the new consensus No. 1 man in the sport, flyweight kingpin Demetrious Johnson . How has this list changed over the last 12 months? Well, since UFC 195 kicked off 2016 with a bang courtesy of the “Fight of the Year” between Robbie Lawler and Carlos Condit , half of our pound-for-pound list has been culled.

This Month’s MMA Birthdays: Jake Shields Turns 38

When Jake Shields retires from mixed martial arts, he will do so as one of the greatest welterweights of all-time. The former Strikeforce , Shooto and EliteXC champion celebrates his 38th birthday on Jan. 9. A two-time All-American wrestler at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, California, Shields made his professional MMA debut on Oct. 23, 1999 and never looked back. He went 11-4-1 across his first 16 appearances -- the run included an upset of Hayato Sakurai in Japan -- and captured the Shooto welterweight championship along the way. Between Nov. 12, 2005 and Oct. 23, 2010, Shields rattled off 15 consecutive victories, excelled in multiple weight classes and defeated a string of accomplished contemporaries: Martin Kampmann , Dan Henderson , Jason Miller , Robbie Lawler , Paul Daley , Mike Pyle , Carlos Condit and Yushin Okami . Shields’ career-defining tear ended at UFC 129, where he lost a five-round decision to the incomparable Georges St. Pierre in a failed bid to claim Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight gold.

Opinion: Mainstream Media Pundits Don't Write Fighting History

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * We're a week removed from Ronda Rousey getting demolished by Amanda Nunes in 48 seconds and people are still talking about it. Lots and lots of people, including a lot of people that should be asking questions instead of offering statements. It's understandable that anyone who saw Nunes punch Rousey silly in barely three quarters of a minute would feel some type of way, nevermind that we're firmly in the era of hyperbolic hot taking across all walks of life, not just sports media or media on the whole. However, owing to Ronda Rousey's mainstream, crossover celebrity status and how truly one-sided and humiliating her knockout at the hands of Nunes was, it was inevitable that some folks who aren't exactly “MMA people” to put it mildly, would overplay their hand and say some abjectly stupid things. But, lovers of cagefighting, contemplation and sanity, it's no reason to get upset, because I come bearing good news: their opinions don't matter on any level.

Chael Sonnen Admits to Being Jealous of Tito Ortiz’s Rise to Stardom in UFC

Chael Sonnen might have beaten Tito Ortiz in a college wrestling match nearly 20 years ago, but he doesn’t expect that long ago result to have any bearing on their fight at Bellator 170 . “Tito’s a great fighter. He fights different than he wrestles. He was a hell of a wrestler. I caught him in one position. I’m not gonna hang my hat on that, and I don’t believe that position’s gonna happen again,” Sonnen said. “I’m a huge fan. I’m pumped to be in there with a Hall of Famer like Tito. I’m gonna do everything I can to beat him , but I don’t dismiss how good this guy is.” Sonnen, who wrestled for the University of Oregon, moved from 177 pounds to 190 pounds to face Ortiz, who competed for Cal State Bakersfield. “The Gangster from West Linn” pinned Ortiz in 44 seconds in their Jan. 23, 1998 match, a date which also happened to be Ortiz’s birthday. At that point, Ortiz had already begun his Ultimate Fighting Championship career. Sonnen, meanwhile, was of aware of his opponent’s exploits and continued to follow Ortiz as he rose to prominence in the Octagon.

Magomed Sultanakhmedov Returns After 5-Year Absence at M-1 Challenge 75

M-1 Global announced on Thursday another bout for its upcoming M-1 Challenge 75 card. Welterweight prospect Sergey Romanov will take on veteran Magomed Sultanakhmedov in one of the featured bouts on the card, which goes down March 3 in Moscow. Once one of the most feared strikers in all of Europe, Sultanakhmedov has been out of commission for over five years. A series of injuries has kept “The White Wolf” out of the realm of combat since March 25, 2011, where he took out Tyson Jeffries in the second round thanks to a barrage of knees to the body. The Tula Oblast native has gone 9-2 in M-1, with eight of his wins coming via knockout. Sultanakhmedov has also competed under the K-1 Hero’s and Dream banners. Romanov, conversely, has been on a tear, having won his last eight, all within the past two years. The St. Petersburg resident is already 3-0 for M-1, with two wins coming via knockout. He last competed in October at M-1 Challenge 71 where he edged Carlos Alexandre Pereira via decision. A pair of undefeated welterweights will headline M-1 Challenge 75 on March 5 as Alexey Kunchenko will collide with Shavkat Rakhmonov .

19’s 2016 Breakthrough Fighter of the Year

Cody Garbrandt entered 2016 as a promising but unproven prospect and left it as the Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight titleholder. It was a meteoric rise, to say the least. The ink dried on Garbrandt’s remarkable campaign at UFC 207 on Dec. 30, as he struck gold at 135 pounds with a five-round unanimous decision over Dominick Cruz at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. He swept the scorecards with 48-46, 48-47 and 48-46 marks from the judges, improved to 11-0 and cemented himself as the Sherdog “Breakthrough Fighter of the Year.” Cruz could not cope with the challenger’s speed, power and precision. Garbrandt attacked the legs early on and then went headhunting. He opened a horrendous gash on Cruz’s left eyebrow in the third round and floored him twice in the fourth, first with a clean right hook and later with a left. Needing a finish, Cruz spent the final five minutes trying to chase down the Uhrichsville, Ohio, native. His pursuit appeared to win him the round but failed to net the desired result. “I always was comfortable in there.

Paul Daley Puts Weight Cut Issues, Koscheck Rivalry Behind Him Heading Into Bellator 170

Paul Daley had a rough second half of 2016. After losing to Douglas Lima in a likely No. 1 contender’s bout at Bellator 158 in July, “Semtex” was pulled from a proposed bout against Derek Anderson at Bellator 163 due to a difficult weight cut . Daley actually made weight at 171 pounds, but was removed from the card on the day of the bout for precautionary reasons. The British slugger is set to return to the cage at Bellator 170 on Jan. 21, when he will square off with fellow knockout artist Brennan Ward in the evening’s co-main event. Daley, who has struggled making weight on more than one occasion, doesn’t anticipate any issues leading up to his bout with Ward. “Things didn’t go according to plan for the last event I was scheduled to compete. I made the weight, but what happened after making the weight which was a problem,” Daley said during a recent conference call. “Obviously we ironed it out. We’re on target to make the weight again. Not so drastically this time. “We should have everything back on point as it has been and ready to compete in what is going to be the most exciting fight on the card.

UFC 207 Medical Suspensions: Ronda Rousey Sidelined 45 Days Following TKO Defeat

There’s no guarantee that Ronda Rousey will ever return to the Octagon following UFC 207 , but at the very minimum, the ex-bantamweight queen will be out for 45 days following last Friday’s event. The Nevada Athletic Commission on Tuesday released a list of medical suspensions from UFC 207, which took place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Jan. 30. In her first bout since November 2015, Rousey was battered by punches and stopped 48 seconds into the opening stanza of her headlining clash with reigning champion Amanda Nunes . Nunes did not receive a medical suspension. In the co-main event, Cody Garbrandt captured the bantamweight strap with a five-round verdict against Dominick Cruz . Garbrandt has been suspended for 30 days with no contact for 21 days, while Cruz is out for 45 days with 30 days of no contact due to a laceration on his left eyebrow. Four fighters from UFC 207 received potential six-month suspensions: John Lineker (jaw), Ray Borg (ankle), Niko Price (toe) and Alex Oliveira (nose).

Vitaly Bigdash Gets New Opponent for Title Defense At One ‘Quest for Power’

One Championship announced Tuesday afternoon that middleweight contender Marcin Prachnio has suffered an injury in training and had to be removed from his championship bout against Vitaly Bigdash on the One “Quest for Power” event on Jan. 14. Poland’s Prachnio, who has won seven in a row, will be replaced by Aung La N Sang . “The Burmese Python” has won four straight inside the One cage and now finds himself vying for the promotion’s 185-pound title on short notice. Bigdash won the promotion’s 185-pound belt back in October 2015 by savagely knocking out Igor Svirid . A knee to the head followed by a torrent of punches ended things 36 ticks into the second at One Championship 32, but the Russian hasn’t fought since. One Championship officials also revealed that Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev will take on Georgi Stoyanov while Igor Subora will oppose Sherif Mohamed to round out the card. The event will take place at the Jakarta Convention Center in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Ryan Bader on his status as the most coveted free agent in MMA today | FOX Sports

“If you look at the light heavyweight division, I’ve beat most of the guys right behind me in the top 10 now and there’s some intriguing fights in the UFC I would still like to have,” Bader said. “It’s kind of in chaos right now. (Daniel) Cormier’s injured, he’s going to fight Anthony Johnson, what happens when Jon Jones comes back? “No, I don’t agree with that,” Jones responded when asked if Rousey was overrated. “I think the sport is catching up with her talent level and people are realizing that maybe she’s not as good as a striker as she is a ground specialist. Cody Garbrandt: ’Sellout’ T.J. Dillashaw Was Never Truly UFC Bantamweight Champion

Cody Garbrandt ’s title-winning victory over Dominick Cruz at UFC 207 established the Team Alpha Male standout as one of the sport’s breakout stars of 2016. In addition to solving the Cruz riddle, “No Love” garnered first-round stoppages of Takeya Mizugaki , Thomas Almeida and Augusto Mendes last year. As he sits atop the bantamweight division, one potential opponent, ex-training partner T.J. Dillashaw , stands out above the rest for Garbrandt’s first title defense. Dillashaw captured the bantamweight title with an upset victory over Renan Barao at UFC 173 in May 2014. He defended the belt twice before relinquishing it to a returning Cruz at UFC Fight Night 81 approximately one year ago. Since then, Dillashaw has earned convincing decision triumphs over John Lineker and Raphael Assuncao to solidify his place as a top contender at 135 pounds. Dillashaw left Team Alpha Male for Elevation Fight Team in Colorado in 2015, a split that was both bitter and public. Harsh feelings still remain from that move, and Garbrandt claims that Dillashaw was never the true bantamweight champion because he never beat Cruz, who had to vacate the crown due to injury woes.

USADA Suspends Ex-UFC Heavyweight Champ Brock Lesnar for 1 Year

Brock Lesnar has been suspended for one year by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for failing two drug tests in relation to his UFC 200 bout vs. Mark Hunt . That sanction falls in line with the punishment recently levied by the Nevada Athletic Commission, which suspended the former heavyweight champion for one year and fined him $250,000. Lesnar tested positive for the estrogen blocker clomiphene in an out-of-competition drug test on June 28 as well as an in-competition test on the day of UFC 200. In his first bout since December 2011, Lesnar defeated Hunt via unanimous decision in their July 9 heavyweight clash. The NAC overturned that victory to a no contest on Dec. 15. The $250,000 fine Lesnar received only represented a fraction of his $2.5 million purse for the fight. Lesnar will be eligible to return to active competition on July 15, 2017, one year from the date he was provisionally suspended by USADA. Lesnar has made no commitment to any further plans regarding MMA. However, according to USADA, “all UFC athletes serving a period of ineligibility for an anti-doping policy violation are required to remain in the USADA registered testing pool and make themselves available for testing in order to receive credit for time served under his or her sanction.

Rose Namajunas explains why she wants 'money fight' with Michelle Waterson | FOX Sports

“As much as a killer as Jessica Andrade is or Claudia Gadelha, as much as they are formidable opponents and somebody I would like to face one day, it just doesn’t seem like the most marketable thing for me. I think people want to see me fight no matter, no matter who the opponent is, but why not? Why not put two pretty girls in there that can also throw down, that both beat Paige, both know taekwondo or karate, it just makes sense. It doesn’t quite make sense for me to take fights that won’t generate the most noise. I’m trying to make money here as well as be the best in the world. So she just makes the most sense for both.”
