After 3 First-Round KO Wins, Sam Oropeza Asked For Bellator Release to Pursue UFC Dreams

Sam Oropeza wants a shot in the UFC. | Dave Mandel/ The Ultimate Fighting Championship is generally considered to be the premier mixed martial arts promotion in the world, with Bellator MMA not far behind. But for Sam Oropeza , the first step in his route to the UFC was to ask for his release from the Scott Coker-led promotion. The 29-year-old middleweight has competed five times under the Bellator banner and is currently riding a seven-fight win streak. Of his 12 career wins, none have reached the judges’ scorecards. With such a record, it would only make sense that Oropeza would factor heavily into a Bellator division currently ruled by Brandon Halsey in 2015. “I believe Bellator has treated me well, so I don’t want to seem like I’m disgruntled or anything like that. I just feel as though they are going in a different direction by not doing the events every week like they used to and that they are going in a different direction in the types of fighters they want to promote,” Oropeza told “I just want the big fights, the big opportunities and I didn’t know if they were willing to give me what I want.

Dana White: T.J. Dillashaw, Urijah Faber 'have made it very clear that they will fight each other'

White said Wednesday on UFC Tonight that Dillashaw and Faber would be down to fight each other. Dillashaw is the current UFC bantamweight champion and Faber is one of the very best in the division, undefeated in non-title fights throughout his illustrious career.

Jon Jones tests positive for cocaine: The timeline of events

January 12 -- The Nevada State Athletic Commission will hold a meeting with an agenda item set for "discussion and possible action regarding the commission's out-of-competition drug testing program, for possible action." The commission will hear arguments and discuss the realm of out-of-competition testing. Currently the commission goes strictly by WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) rules, but they do have the ability to make additional changes for their particular state just like when they banned testosterone replacement therapy last year.

The Fighter & The Kid

This podcast has jumped to the top of my UFC/MMA podcast list - but c'mon, once a week?. I really feel like Brendan and Bryan should be able to do at least 2 eps a week, or maybe 2 hours a pop - I mean, what else do these guys have to do during the day? Brendan habitually mispronouncing every major UFC fighter's name on the roster is a nice touch, too. I also want to hear more about Bryan's mad greco skills. I think he should do each episode shirtless.

Vitor Belfort has already passed 3 random drug tests ahead of UFC 184

Andy Foster, the California State Athletic Commission executive officer, stated in October that they intended to test Belfort 3-5 times before UFC 184, but since Nevada has been handling the testing up to this point, he sees no reason to double up on their efforts, and will take over Vitor's testing once Nevada hands it off to California. He went on to add that CSAC had already given Chris Weidman a random test, which he passed.

UFC 186 set for Montreal in April, other potential 2015 locations announced

The UFC will also be in Canada on Aug. 23 for a Fight Night card, likely on FOX Sports 1. The city is not official for that one yet, but there will be at least two other events later in the year in Canada with Toronto and Calgary being considered. One will be a pay-per-view.

Rafael dos Anjos: 'I knocked Ben Henderson out and I'll do the same with Anthony Pettis'

"I think that you have to put pressure on Pettis, otherwise he starts to throws those kicks that he has. He's a creative guy, I think that you have to not let him breathe. He's a great champion, has a strong game, he's coming from a impressive streak, finished two former champions, such as Henderson and Melendez. He's also young, well rounded, knocks people out, submits guys, but I think that his reign will end. He's a human being, he has already lost and made mistakes. I see a lot of flaws in his game but I won't tell because I would be giving him a chance to correct things, but I know that my volume will be important. I'm only sure that this fight will not go to the distance. I'll will train to finish him by KO or submission. I don't know how but I'll win."

Click here to support Simon helped Save Dylan Avila by Ben Floyd

Hi, my name is Ben Floyd.  I am a friend of Dylan Avila and have been a part of the huge ongoing effort to help with the aftermath of the attack that took place Monday night at the Renton Local 907.   I'm sure by now we've all heard about the tragedy that befell Dylan Avila, a married father of three, Monday night when he was attacked with a baseball bat while hosting a show, and ended up in the hospital having surgery and titanium plates put in his head.  Or, you may have seen it on the Q13, Komo 4, or Kiro 7 news. Who you may not have heard about is our friend Simon Kaufman, the unsung hero, who was one of the first people to tackle the man with the bat, possibly saving Dylan's life.   Make no mistake, Simon is a hero. Simon was injured while rescuing Dylan and now needs surgery, and has no insurance.  He's too humble to ask.  Let's help him out.

Twishort / WarMachine170: Where to begin? It's sad to say …

Where to begin? It's sad to say that I am 1000 times more embarrassed of what I'm about to tell you, than I am of being accused of the crimes that have landed me in jail. It's a testament to how screwed up my way of thinking is, as well as to how screwed up our society has become. At first I blamed this whole situation on Christy and that guy. Then I blamed my bad luck. Then I blamed my bad karma. Then I blamed myself. Then I blamed steroids. Then I blamed the programming job done to my subconscious mind… A product of a traumatic childhood and a poor choice of role models. One of them has to be the culprit, there must be some reason that, though I always have the best of intentions, I keep landing myself in huge messes. And why am I so restless, why am I never satisfied? I've achieved countless goals: I'm a professional athlete, I own my own business, I once had the perfect little wife, then I had Christy – my life, though enviable on all accounts – never satisfied me no matter how well it is going; I find a reason to be unhappy, a reason to sabotage it. A few blogs ago I wrote about the letter from my grandfather; his letter, and my response to it, broke my heart all over again.

'WSOF 18: Moraes vs. Hill' set for Thursday, Feb. 12 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Meanwhile, Canada’s Hill will be looking to stay unbeaten. He returned to action in June after nearly two years on the sidelines and scored a first-round knockout of Mike Adams at WSOF Canada’s second event. That was enough to get him a shot at the red-hot Moraes, though it comes five months after he originally hoped.

The Best Post Fight Interviews in the UFC in 2014

To escalate that emotion many times after a fight is over, UFC commentators like Joe Rogan, Jon Anik or Brian Stann will enter the Octagon to talk to the winners, losers or a combination of both to get their thoughts on the action that just took place. Sometimes the few moments shared in the cage are unnerving and frustrating, but often they create rivalries and help launch a new star following a spectacular performance.

The 10: The Top Fights of January

Here’s how ridiculous the first month of 2015 is inside the Octagon: one event is already in the books – an event that boasted arguably the best fight of the month and a handful of additional quality matchups – and yet there are still enough standout contests left on the calendar to bring you this edition of The 10. Over the next month, title challengers will be determined, grudges will be settled and the greatest of all-time will return to action against a mercurial talent also making his first appearance in quite some time – and that’s just the slate for UFC 183. Check out what is still on deck for the month ahead. (Note: fights are listed in order, not ranked.) UFC Fight Night: McGregor vs. Siver (Sunday, January 18 in Boston, Massachusetts)

Nevada Athletic Commission head: Jon Jones' testosterone clean prior to UFC 182, CIR test conducted

"Testosterone is the "male" hormone, accounting for strength and endurance. It occurs naturally in men and in smaller amounts in women. For every molecule of testosterone produced by the body, another molecule of a substance called epitestosterone, which does not enhance performance, is made. In a normal male body, the ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone, the T/E ratio, is about 1:1. But variation can occur in individuals, and the World Anti-Doping Code has deemed 4:1 as the threshold for a positive test."

Legacy FC to Push for Open Scoring in Future Kickboxing Events After Jan. 16 Debut

Cosmo Alexandre (left) is part of Legacy’s first kickboxing card. | Keith Mills/ Legacy Fighting Championship plans to make its foray into the kickboxing arena as entertaining as possible. The Texas-based promotion will hold its inaugural kickboxing card on Jan. 16 at the Bayou Music Center in Houston. The evening’s main card will be televised on AXS-TV and features a number of names that might be recognizable to MMA fans, including Bellator veteran Cosmo Alexandre , former UFC talent Pat Barry and ex-WEC titlist Miguel Torres . Legacy FC will essentially utilize the same rules system as Glory World Series, with a few minor differences. According to an email from promoter Mick Maynard, yellow cards will be issues as warnings to prevent fighters from stalling or inactivity. In addition, Legacy hopes to have open scoring for future kickboxing events. “We have also put in a request for open scoring which is unlikely to be approved for this event -- but for our second event will be implemented,” Maynard said.

Undefeated Johnny Nunez Ready for War at WSOF 17

Like most mixed martial arts promotions, World Series of Fighting’s 155 pound weight class is widely considered it’s most loaded and talent rich division. Making his way through the shark infested waters to stake his claim at the top of the rankings is Johnny Nunez. An undefeated fighter who successfully bested Ozzy Dugulubgov in his WSOF debut last year, Nunez has a chance to make some serious noise in the division with a win over veteran Brian Cobb in this month’s WSOF 17 co-main event. Last time we saw you back in March following your win over Ozzy. That was nearly a year ago, why so much time off? “It’s been difficult getting a fight. World Series of Fighting has a lot of people in their lightweight division so it’s been hard to get a fight booked.” How important is it for you to be active as a fighter? “It’s not extremely important and I’m always training regardless. But, I’ve got to work to make money so I can have time off to train. But at the same time, it’s not like I’m out there trying to fight every month either.” Do you have a job outside of fighting? “Yes, I’m a personal trainer at my gym and I teach kids wrestling.

Dana White: If Anderson Wins, He Could Get Shot at Weidman vs. Belfort Winner |

I like both fighters, but don’t have any desire of seeing a third rematch. So what if Anderson were to beat Weidman? Would we then have an immediate rematch to the rematched rematch? And if Silva wins that and they’re 2-2? The rubber match? They’d have five fights and set a precedence for stupidity. What are the rankings for anyway? Silva needs to fight his way back up the chain though because of how good he was, I could see that being expedited, maybe taking on the top contender after a fight WITH SOMEONE AT HIS WEIGHT CLASS. White seems to be making desperate moves lately. Bringing in ‘talent’ no one really wants or regurgitating old fights. It’s gone from putting on the best fights with the best fighters to making fights based on $$. For a time, I thought the ufc did a really good job of putting on legitimate events.

Jon Jones' out of competition drug tests all show abnormal hormone levels

Lastly, it has to be noted that urine testing for testosterone levels is significantly less accurate than blood testing. All three tests appear to be urine tests only. It's also possible that the concentration/dilution of Jones' urine mean his levels look abnormal. It should not affect the relative ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone, though. Nor do I believe it would explain the drastic change in epitestosterone level between his December 4th and December 18th test, since his testosterone levels do not show the same rate of increase.

I feel horrible I just woke up in la! Jet lag from being in Thailand kicked my ass today! Uggggh so much to do !!!

Perhaps the biggest problem with the UFC’s current expansion rate — you know, other than the watered-down cards , the recycled marketing gimmicks, and the spreading of those watered-down cards across 5 different platforms — is how often their “event a week” schedule almost inherently undermines the legitimacy of their product. With so many cards to fill a year, the UFC needs every last fighter on their roster to stay healthy in order to keep things afloat, and when a fighter inevitably gets injured, the promotion is forced to hire an outside gun — often on short notice — whom they expect to not only make weight and put on a show, but do so without any…how do I put this…”help.” All for a glorious 8k/8k paycheck if they’re lucky.

Anthony Pettis: A lot of athletes get caught up in drugs

"Jon's young. He's my age - 27. You get put in front of a lot of people who care about who you are and there's some negative energy around that, as well. Some people don't want to see you do good or want to introduce you to things will bring you down, and it's kind of up to you. You've got to be strong-willed. You've got to know what to say 'yes' and 'no' to."

Is Conor McGregor Worthy of a Featherweight Title Shot? CagePotato Explains Why It Makes Sense [VIDEO]

Report: CIR testing performed on Jones' pre-fight tests, says NSAC head

“The Nevada State athletic commission just stopped by my house and hit me with that random (test),” Jones wrote. “Only thing I’m on is that #PHW pure hard work! They’re probably wondering how my chicken legs are so strong. I’ve had a few @muscletech products but that’s all legal :)”

NSAC head: Jon Jones' samples underwent CIR testing and came back clean

This led to journalists including our own Brent Brookhouse imploring NSAC to use CIR (Carbon Isotope Ratio) testing on the samples. Simply put, a CIR test proves whether the testosterone in the sample is natural or synthetic. But according to NSAC executive director Bob Bennett, the samples have already been CIR tested - and came back clean. He relayed this information to Jeremy Botter of Bleacher Report :
