Sherdog.com’s 2016 Comeback Fighter of the Year

He was gone but not forgotten, out of sight but certainly not out of mind. Khabib Nurmagomedov spent nearly two full years on the sidelines convalescing from various injuries, as the undefeated Dagestani brute watched the Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight division move on without him. He was Cain Velasquez at 155 pounds, an uncrowned king who could not stay healthy. In his absence, Rafael dos Anjos , Eddie Alvarez , Tony Ferguson and others rose to the top of the division. As it turns out, Nurmagomedov was simply biding his time. His return bout was booked for UFC on Fox 19, where he was slotted opposite Ferguson in the headliner. However, 11 days out from the event, Ferguson withdrew with an injury and left UFC officials scrambling to fill the vacancy. They settled on Cage Fury Fighting Championships titleholder Darrell Horcher as a replacement, matched him with Nurmagomedov and elevated Glover Teixeira - Rashad Evans to the main event position. The change in plans had no effect on Nurmagomedov, Sherdog’s “Comeback Fighter of the Year” for 2016.

“Just another day in the ghetto”

McGregor had quite a year in 2016. Despite losing his first fight in his UFC career when he lost to Nate Diaz in March, McGregor still managed to make history and be a fighter of the year contender. In August, McGregor won a rematch against Diaz. In November, McGregor became the first fighter in history to hold two UFC titles at the same time. He knocked out Eddie Alvarez to win the lightweight title, while he was the UFC featherweight champion.

Former UFC Lightweight Champ Rafael dos Anjos Announces Move to Welterweight

It wasn’t too long ago that Rafael dos Anjos was the king of the lightweights. He was 10-1 over an 11-fight stretch and in that span, he captured the UFC’s 155-pound crown. His unanimous decision win over Anthony Pettis won him the title and he defended by spectacularly knocking out Donald Cerrone in 66 seconds in his first defense and it seemed at that juncture that the Brazilian might wind up being an all-time great. But a first-round stoppage loss to Eddie Alvarez lost him his throne and when Tony Ferguson defeated him via judges’ decision last November, his run as a top lightweight reached a resounding end. As a result, dos Anjos will be making a significant change in 2017. Brazilian news outlet Combate reported that dos Anjos has abandoned the lightweight division and will now campaign as a full-fledged welterweight. A message on dos Anjos’ official Twitter account on Friday confirmed the report. “I reached the top of LW, it’s been a hard journey make weight every time, now I want to fight at my best, I have new goals, I’m moving to WW,” he wrote.

Marcus Edwards vs. Adam Townsend Tops LFA 5 Lineup on Feb. 24

Newly-formed Legacy Fighting Alliance isn’t wasting any time in lining up the early portion of 2017 with events. On Friday afternoon, the Las Vegas-based promotion announced that LFA 5 will head to the Rocky Mountains and nestle in Broomfield, Colo., on Feb. 24. Headlining the event, which will take place inside the 1STBANK Center, will be a lightweight war between Marcus Edwards and Adam Townsend . A veteran of Titan FC, RFA and Legacy FC, Edwards has won his last two. Since losing to longtime veteran Pat Healy in July 2015, “Bad Intentions” has been on a roll, having submitted Lorawnt-T Nelson that following November and then knocking out Billy Christianson at Legacy FC 60 in October. The Denver native is excited to keep things rolling in front of his hometown fans. “It’s an honor to be headlining one of the first LFA events in my backyard,” Edwards said. “I have fought for both RFA and Legacy FC and had great experiences working with the people behind the scenes for both promotions. They are an awesome, fun group of people, and the merger now has them all under one roof.

Two More Bouts Added to BAMMA 28 on Feb. 24

The British Association of Mixed Martial Arts announced Friday afternoon that two more bouts have been tacked onto BAMMA 28, which goes down Feb. 24 at SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Newly-crowned Lonsdale lightweight champion Rhys McKee will stand opposite Myles Price in his first title defense, while John Redmond will take on Pelu Adetola in a middleweight affair. McKee is coming off the biggest win of his career and looks to keep his success rolling in front of his hometown fans. “Skeletor” has yet to lose in the pro ranks and at BAMMA 27 last December, he flattened Jai Herbert in just 1:47 to capture the promotion’s belt. The Next Generation N.I. product has stopped every man he’s faced.. Price has won just twice in his last seven bouts but he’s only been stopped twice. Redmond is aiming to rebound from a submission loss to Leeroy Barnes at a Cage Warriors event in November. “Johnny Jitzu” had won two straight bouts prior to his most recent loss, and wants to reverse his career arc against Adetola, who has lost three consecutive bouts and five of six overall.

Jon Jones Doesn’t Think Ronda Rousey Should Retire After Devastating UFC 207 Defeat

The future of Ronda Rousey remains very much in doubt following her devastating loss to Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 , but at least one fellow former champion believes that she shouldn’t call it a career just yet. “I think she needs to stick to fighting. I said in a tweet that I believe she still beats 90 percent of the division,” Jones told TMZ Sports . “Maybe she’s not going to be the invincible, unbeaten person that people that she was....whether or not she fights again she’s still going to go down as an absolute legend.” In her first fight since November 2015, Rousey looked overwhelmed in falling to Nunes in 48 seconds on Dec. 30. It was Jones’ Jackson-Wink MMA teammate, Holly Holm , that struck the first blow against the Rousey mystique with a second-round knockout of the Olympic judoka at UFC 193. Still, Jones disputes Nunes’ recent claim that Rousey was overrated during her rise to stardom in the promotion. “I don’t agree with that. I think the sport is kind of catching up with her talent level. And people are realizing that maybe she’s not as good a striker as she is a ground specialist,” Jones said.

Cody Garbrandt: ’Sellout’ T.J. Dillashaw Was Never Truly UFC Bantamweight Champion

Cody Garbrandt ’s title-winning victory over Dominick Cruz at UFC 207 established the Team Alpha Male standout as one of the sport’s breakout stars of 2016. In addition to solving the Cruz riddle, “No Love” garnered first-round stoppages of Takeya Mizugaki , Thomas Almeida and Augusto Mendes last year. As he sits atop the bantamweight division, one potential opponent, ex-training partner T.J. Dillashaw , stands out above the rest for Garbrandt’s first title defense. Dillashaw captured the bantamweight title with an upset victory over Renan Barao at UFC 173 in May 2014. He defended the belt twice before relinquishing it to a returning Cruz at UFC Fight Night 81 approximately one year ago. Since then, Dillashaw has earned convincing decision triumphs over John Lineker and Raphael Assuncao to solidify his place as a top contender at 135 pounds. Dillashaw left Team Alpha Male for Elevation Fight Team in Colorado in 2015, a split that was both bitter and public. Harsh feelings still remain from that move, and Garbrandt claims that Dillashaw was never the true bantamweight champion because he never beat Cruz, who had to vacate the crown due to injury woes.

‘The WWE No Longer Interested In Ronda Rousey — They Don’t Want Broken Stars’

I’ll say this before, and I will say it again; there has never been an athlete in the history of sports that their self worth, and I don’t like saying this but it’s true..their self worth is so tied to their professional success, think about that for a second; when she lost, she was not only devastated; when she lost, the thoughts that were going through her head were not good ones, and hopefully she understands that she has gone much farther than any female in sports, and hopefully she can latch on to a positive, but as far as the WWE is concerned, they don’t bring in a broken star, and that is what she is. She is broken from a professional sense. They don’t rebuild broken celebrities outside of the WWE. Brock started in the WWE. Ken Shamrock was a fighter who lost, but any of these comparisons, are not only fair to them, but they’re not fair to Ronda Rousey. They are never going to bring her in because the fans won’t treat her fairly, and what exactly are they going to do with her at this point?

EXCLUSIVE | Tyron Woodley explains why he accepted a rematch with Stephen Thompson at UFC 209 | BJPenn.com

“Demian Maia obviously, if I was in his position I would be highly upset because I would feel like I am getting the short end of the stick. I would feel like I deserve that title fight and he said it himself, as many people believe, that it wasn’t a draw at UFC 205 and that I won that fight. So now he has to sit in the pocket because of some New York judges, who were probably judging their first MMA fight ever. As you saw from the scorecards it was some really weird judging and on top of the judging, different referees would have stepped in and stopped that fight. Even that Conor McGregor fight against Eddie (Alvarez), you know he hit Eddie with that supreme four-piece and Eddie hit the ground and they stopped it. You know I hit Thompson, he fell down almost the same way if not worse judging by the pictures and the bout continued. I feel like at a certain point it was a flash knockout. I am actually really surprised Stephen didn’t get medically suspended for six months considering how he was flash KO’d in that fight and how many times he was punches and elbowed.
