Max Holloway set to defend title vs. Frankie Edgar at UFC 222

Holloway, who was named 2017 “Fighter of the Year” by the UFC , is just the fifth fighter in the promotion’s history to tally at least a 12-fight winning streak. The most dominant 145-pounder in the UFC, Holloway has won 11 straight in the division, which is the longest active streak. His nine stoppage wins in UFC featherweight competition are the most in divisional history. Has also has the most overall wins in the division’s history with 14.

5
Jeremy Stephens: By The Numbers

Jeremy Stephens if nothing else offers stability in a sport often defined by its volatility. A staple of the Ultimate Fighting Championship since he joined the roster as a 21-year-old prospect in May 2007, Stephens will take on Doo Ho Choi in the UFC Fight Night 124 main event this Saturday at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. The Alliance MMA representative last competed at UFC 215 on Sept. 9, when he chewed up Gilbert Melendez ’s leg with kicks and snapped a two-fight losing streak with a unanimous decision over the former Strikeforce champion. Even so, Stephens has produced mixed results since he downshifted to 145 pounds, going 6-5 in 11 appearances as a featherweight. Whether or not he can graduate beyond his place as a respected gatekeeper remains to be seen. As Stephens approaches his five-round battle with Choi, here are some of the numbers that have come to define him: 1: Loss by knockout. Yves Edwards did the deed with punches and elbows at UFC on Fox 5 in December 2012, dispatching Stephens 1:55 into the first round.

Stinton: What’s At Stake for ‘The Korean Superboy’

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * The last time Doo Ho Choi walked into the Octagon was 13 months ago against Cub Swanson . A lot of hype was behind him. He was on a 12-fight winning streak, 10 of which were knockouts. He was 3-0 in the Ultimate Fighting Championship , and all three of his wins were first-round knockouts. Even though he was ranked 11th in the official UFC rankings and Swanson was fourth, Choi was still the favorite. Choi was a promising prospect, an exciting fighter from a region ripe with potential. Swanson was a fairly known commodity who increasingly fit the bill as a featherweight gatekeeper, boasting the most wins in World Extreme Cagefighting -UFC featherweight history but having suffered losses to the division’s elite more often than the opposite. An exciting standup affair was expected, and it looked as if a memorable win against a top-five opponent was in the cards for “The Korean Superboy.

5 UFC Prospects Worth Watching in 2018

MMA’s talent pipelines continue to provide talent for the Ultimate Fighting Championship , and as the world’s largest mixed martial arts promotion chugs into 2018, there are a number of fast-rising prospects worth keeping an eye on. Here are five of them: Tai Tuivasa Tuivasa came to the UFC at the age of 24 with an overall record of 5-0. In a heavyweight division absolutely devoid of young talent, he was a welcomed addition. Tuivasa took on Rashad Coulter in his promotional debut at UFC Fight Night 121 on Nov. 19 and finished him in devastating fashion, scoring a flying knee knockout in the first round. He first made his name as a professional rugby player and kickboxer, then made the transition to MMA. “Bam Bam” has plenty of talented training partners at his disposal in Western Sydney, including UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker , 2001 K-1 World Grand Prix winner Mark Hunt and light heavyweight prospect Tyson Pedro . Tuivasa has the luxury of being one of the youngest heavyweights on the UFC roster, so it will be interesting to see how he develops.

Sherdog.com’s Pound-for-Pound Top 10

Robbie Lawler enjoyed quite a late-career ride as a pound-for-pound stalwart, long after his competitive prime was thought to have run its course. Nevertheless, all good things must come to an end. Lawler on Dec. 16 had no answers for Rafael dos Anjos , as he lost a five-round decision to the resurgent Brazilian in the UFC on Fox 26 main event at Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Dos Anjos pitched a shutout, carrying 50-45 scorecards from all three judges. To make matters worse for Lawler, he suffered a torn ACL and meniscus -- knee injuries that figure to sideline him for most of 2018. Where “Ruthless Robbie” goes from here remains to be seen, but he turns 36 on March 20 and has the mileage of a grueling 41-fight career with which to contender. For now, Lawler exits our pound-for-pound list to make room for the man who defeated him. Dos Anjos was something of an afterthought a little more than a year ago, but a move to 170 pounds has breathed new life into the former lightweight champion’s career. Since throwing out his anchor in the welterweight division, RDA has gone 3-0 with wins over Lawler, Neil Magny and Tarec Saffiedine .

ATT head coach: Amanda Nunes vs. Cris Cyborg '1,000 percent' going to happen

“I believe that when you fight and you get to be a contender, it’s really hard. When you win and you become a champion, it’s even harder than that. But when you have a chance to leave your name in history, I think you have to do it. It’s something that’s good for everybody. If Cyborg was an American Top Team fighter, yeah, it really doesn’t make any sense. But still, I think the chance of what’s going to come from the fight is something only a few people have to do in life.”

That pre-fight slap? Cris Cyborg doesn't particularly enjoy it, but it serves a purpose

Speaking to Brazil’s Combate.com  and SporTV channel, Cyborg explained that this has been a common pre-fight practice in the almost seven years she’s been working with the coach. It’s intended to make sure that she’s in the moment and, as she jokingly said in her Instagram caption, that “her spirit hasn’t escaped.”

“The one thing I’ll point out – I don’t want to get too much into a back-and-forth – but we’re a public company and there are regulations, there are legal requirements,” Espinoza said. “We can’t put out press releases giving fake numbers. We have shareholders. We have millions of shareholders. When we put something on it, when we say, ‘Here’s a Showtime Sports press release from Mayweather-Pacquiao or Mayweather-McGregor,’ that has gone through lawyers and everyone has looked at it. It’s factual.”
