Donald Cerrone Expects Conor McGregor to Be ‘Easy Work’ for Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205

Donald Cerrone is not a fan of Conor McGregor . That became apparent when the two fighters crossed paths at the UFC’s “Go Big” press conference at the end of 2015. At the time, McGregor was set to face Jose Aldo for the featherweight title, while Cerrone was to challenge Rafael dos Anjos for lightweight gold. “He’s real good at talking out in front of the public, but when we all stand in the back he ain’t got nothing to say,” Cerrone said then. “I stood back there for 30 minutes right next to him, and [he had] nothing to say to me, but he was very cordial with my man [Mendes] next to me. “Of course we get out here he wants to run his mouth, but it’s good, you know, he sells the fights. But if he comes to 155 I’m gonna bend his little ass over.” At the time, McGregor vs. Cerrone looked like a potential dream matchup in 2016. However, Cerrone moved to 170 pounds after losing to dos Anjos, and he appears to have a new lease on life in that division. Meanwhile, McGregor captured 145-pound gold but spent the majority of the past year engaged in a rivalry with Nate Diaz , splitting a pair of bouts with the Stockton, Calif.

Opinion: On Puppetry and Fairness

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Fans are, by nature, passionate and therefore fickle. Perhaps there's something to be said for the way in which professional sports tease out a certain kind of mania in its fandom, but I'm skeptical that mixed martial arts fans, or any particular sports fans, are “worse” on the whole, or that particular sport's fans are uniquely successful in dragging down the discourse around that sport. Fans of a particular sport may be different, idiosyncratic, but not abstractly “worse.” OK, now, having said all that ... MMA fans are just the worst sometimes, aren't they? Last week, I wrote in this same space about how UFC 205 , when its lone title offering was Tyron Woodley - Stephen Thompson , was a fantastic high-level MMA card, but not one that matched the years of hype and symbol significant attributed to the first Ultimate Fighting Championship card at Madison Square Garden.

UFC Fight Night 96 play-by-play and live results

Round 2 – Faszholz gets a trio of punches after a leg kick attempt. She works a body kick as Vieira looks for the counter hook. A kick is intercepted by Vieira for another takedown. In closed guard, Vieira pushes Faszholz to the cage and postures up as Faszholz again tries to tie her up. Vieira stands and tries to avoid the inevitable upticks from Faszholz, then decides she’ll sit into guard. Her next attempt to pass guard along the fence is intercepted, and we’re back in closed guard with a fight that’s, so far, mostly a grappling match. Vieira stands again and dodges Faszholz’s legs, but can’t get around them to take side control. Faszholz working hammerfists from the bottom. Referee Miragliotta stands them up, getting some appreciation from the audience in the process. Faszholz gets aggressive and fires off a few combinations, but another slow body kick allows Vieira to catch it and deposit her on the mat. And here, again, the action stalls. This time, however, Miragliotta sees the stall and stands them up. Faszholz advancing, puts together a lunging one-two and gets centered on the inside by a hook from Vieira.

Picking & Grinning: UFC Fight Night ‘Lineker vs. Dodson’

They are two of the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s most dynamic offensive fighters. Former Jungle Fight John Lineker will face “The Ultimate Fighter 14” winner John Dodson in the UFC Fight Night 96 main event on Saturday at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon. In the co-headliner, onetime Bellator MMA champion Will Brooks collides with Alex Oliveira in a pivotal battle at 155 pounds. The rest of the four-fight main card features a welterweight clash pairing Joshua Burkman with Zak Ottow and a flyweight affair pitting Louis Smolka against Brandon Moreno . Ahead of UFC Fight Night “Lineker vs. Dodson,” members of the Sherdog.com staff swallowed their pride and put their reputations on the line with bold predictions: Standings Tristen Critchfield (82-41-3) Jordan Breen (79-44-3) Mike Fridley (78-45-3) Brian Knapp (75-48-3) Mike Sloan (70-53-3) The Lineup 135: John Lineker (28-7) vs. John Dodson (18-7) 155: Will Brooks (18-1) vs. Alex Oliveira (14-4-1) 170: Joshua Burkman (28-13) vs.

Weekend Fight Odds: John Dodson, Will Brooks Favored at UFC Fight Night

Gamblers looking to gain an edge going into this weekend will have to be shrewd and selective, as UFC Fight Night 96 isn’t loaded with live underdogs that could potentially pull in tons of dough. The main event featuring streaking John Lineker and John Dodson is about as close as they come and there is only one somewhat sizable underdog on the card. Dodson, a former two-time UFC flyweight title challenger, is a slight favorite against his foe in the main event, which goes down at the Moda Center in Portland, Ore. On Saturday night. According to online sportsbook Bovada , “The Magician” is hovering right around -135 a day out while Lineker, who has won five straight, is a slight underdog at +105. Former Bellator lightweight champion Will Brooks will make his second appearance inside the Octagon and he’s a solid favorite against “Cowboy” Alex Oliveira . It could wind up being the best fight of the night and since Oliveira has plenty of skills, dropping some coin on him at +225 could prove to be a wise choice. Brooks, meanwhile, currently is a -285 favorite.

Euro FC 1 Weigh-in Results: UFC Vets Tom Niinimaki, Jonathan Brookins Make Weight

The inaugural European Fighting Challenge event will take place on Saturday night at the Espoo Metro Arena in Espoo, Finland, and is cooking up to be a solid night of mixed martial arts action. Headlining the event will be a showdown between Ultimate Fighting Championship veterans Tom Niinimaki and Jonathan Brookins at a catchweight. At Friday’s weigh-ins, everything went off without a hitch as each combatant was able to make weight, greenlighting the card. Niinimaki, a Finnish veteran of Shooto and Titan Fighting Championships , found himself in the midst of an 11-fight winning streak before finally making it into the UFC. He won his Octagon debut, edging longtime veteran Rani Yahya via split decision on the TUF 18 Finale. But his success in the Las Vegas-based promotion was short-lived as “Stoneface” lost his next three -- all via rear-naked choke -- before being released by the UFC. Looking to turn his pro career around, Niinimaki needs to beat Brookins and at the scale, he checked in at 138 pounds. Brookins is also in need of a victory as he’s coming off a decision loss to Shintaro Ishiwatari at Pancrase 279 in July.

OCTOBER 1st, 1975 -- FORTY YEARS LATER, THE ‘THRILLA IN MANILA’ REMAINS BOXING’S GREATEST TESTAMENT OF WILLS.

As giants in the golden age of heavyweights, people forget that Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier collided as mortal men. Yet because they tried to ruin each other on three separate occasions between 1971 and 1975 in the boxing ring — and because they both succeeded and didn’t in those attempts — they ended up immortalizing one another. Frazier and Ali, the most celebrated rivalry the fight game has ever known, are bound in eternity.

I was in trouble a cuople times there, but the experience paid off. He wasn’t respecting my takedowns, so he just kept coming forward and I knew I had to unleash the right hand. As soon as I saw he was hurt, I thought I would give him a couple fakes and he’d drop his hands.”
