Matches to Make After Bellator 184

Darrion Caldwell found his way to Bellator MMA ’s pantheon of champions, just as many predicted he would when he joined the organization as an undefeated prospect in March 2014. “The Wolf” completed his rise to the top of the 135-pound weight class, as he captured the bantamweight crown with a five-round unanimous decision over Eduardo Dantas in the Bellator 184 main event on Friday at the Winstar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma. Scores were 48-47, 48-47 and 50-45, the win putting even more distance between Caldwell and his surprising submission defeat to Joe Taimanglo a little more than a year ago. Dantas was never afforded the breathing room he needed. Caldwell bottled up the Brazilian against the cage, running through various clinches that chewed up clock, minimized risk and kept momentum in his corner. He delivered a crowd-pleasing suplex in the first round, dropped Dantas to a knee with a standing elbow strike in the second and drew blood with ground-and-pound in the fourth. It was more than enough to overshadow the Nova Uniao standout’s work.

Dana White: Jason Aldean Snubbed UFC 216, Vegas Shooting Survivors for ‘SNL’ Gig

At UFC 216 on Saturday night, Everlast sang “America the Beautiful” to open the pay-per-view portion of the event but that wasn’t the original plan. According to UFC President Dana White, the Grammy Award-winning artist was chosen to perform because originally desired performer Jason Aldean, as well as several other country musicians, turned down the opportunity. "His image was more important then coming back to Vegas and playing for the people who are his fans and who got shot watching him play," White told TMZ . On Oct. 1, a mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest festival in Las Vegas left 59 dead and at least 527 injured. When the attack began on the country music festival, it was Aldean on stage. White says that the UFC reached out to Aldean for him to perform at the event, which was dedicated to the memory of those who died in the attack and featured 1500 first responders and 15 survivors in the crowd at T-Mobile Arena. Instead, Aldean performed on Saturday Night Live on the evening. “F—- you Jason Aldean. Stay out of Vegas,” added White.

Liam McGeary Injured; Slated Bellator 185 Bout with UFC Veteran Bubba McDaniel Canceled

A week ago, Bellator 185 , lost half of its co-main event. Now, the entire fight is up in smoke. On Oct. 2, Bellator MMA announced that Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal had withdrawn from his scheduled bout with former promotional light heavyweight champion Liam McGeary due to a knee injury. Days later, Lawal was replaced by Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Bubba McDaniel . Now, the bout has been nixed all together as McGeary has now pulled out of the contest due to injury. MMAJunkie was first to report McGeary’s scrape and the fight’s dissolution. The nature of the British fighter’s injury was not disclosed. Bellator 185 is scheduled for Oct. 20 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. In the evening’s headliner, UFC veteran and recent Bellator acquisition Gegard Mousasi makes his promotional debut against former Bellator middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko . With the subtraction of McGeary’s bout with McDaniel, a welterweight contest between David Rickels and Brennan Ward figures to move into the co-main event position for the televised portion of the event, which airs live on Spike.

Kevin Lee: Tony Ferguson Could Have Lost a Lot of Fights During Current Win Streak

Tony Ferguson is a man who doesn’t lack for confidence. That bravado is rooted in merit, as “El Cucuy” enters his interim lightweight championship bout with Kevin Lee in the UFC 216 headliner on Saturday on a nine-fight winning streak. However, Lee isn’t as impressed. “The Motown Phenom,” who enters the matchup on a five-fight winning streak of his own, believes Ferguson has been walking a tightrope in some of his Octagon appearances. “Tony is super aggressive. That’s kind of what he relies on. Even though you say he’s won [nine] fights in a row, I look at a lot of them and say, he could have lost a lot of those,” Lee said on the UFC “Unfiltered” podcast . “He was getting getting his ass whooped by [ Abel Trujillo ], he was getting his ass whooped by [Rafael] dos Anjos….I do give Tony a whole lot of respect. “He’s talking about training like a caveman. There’s a reason why cavemen are extinct, they don’t last too long. I don’t think he’s filled the holes in his game. I’m gonna go out there and show those holes. “ Ferguson owns notable victories over the likes of dos Anjos, Edson Barboza , Josh Thomson and Gleison Tibau , to name a few.

Opinion: A Source of Pride

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * There is a story behind every journey into the Octagon, and every story invariably includes adversity and heartache -- almost certainly to a much greater degree than triumph. Success is built on a mountain of Ls, and in order to suffer through those losses and keep trudging onward, there must be an aquifer of personal pride somewhere beneath the bedrock of whatever other motivation propels fighters forward. Though nebulous and amorphous, pride is an essential piece of the fight game. There was no shortage of it at UFC 216 on Saturday in Las Vegas, especially at the top of the card. It was no secret that Ray Borg had an uphill battle against Demetrious Johnson in the main event. At +900 leading up to the fight, he was the biggest underdog on the card -- and deservedly so. Borg is seven years younger than Johnson and likely years away from his prime.

UFC Moves On From Anheuser-Busch; Modelo Especial to Become UFC's Official Beer in 2018

This Bud isn’t for the Ultimate Fighting Championship any more. The UFC has reached a multiyear deal with Modelo Especial which will make the Mexican import the Octagon’s official beer and malt beverage starting in 2018. The partnership was announced on Monday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. “Modelo is an amazing brand that shares UFC's unmatched commitment to its fan base,” UFC President Dana White told The Associated Press . “I love Modelo and we're already talking about doing a lot of exciting things together.” The fight promotion signed a sponsorship deal with Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. nearly a decade ago. In February 2008, the two companies announced their partnership, making Bud Light the official beer of both the UFC and then-active World Extreme Cagefighting brands. After the initial three-year contract, the UFC and Anheuser-Busch extended their deal in April 2011. “When Bud signed on to be our sponsor, it sent a significant message that UFC was a real player in the sports landscape,” said UFC Chief Operating Officer Ike Lawrence Epstein said.

Darrion Caldwell Unseats Eduardo Dantas, Takes Bantamweight Belt in Bellator 184 Headliner

Darrion Caldwell fought his fight. The onetime NCAA wrestling champion became the fifth bantamweight titleholder in Bellator MMA history, as he laid claim to a unanimous decision over Eduardo Dantas in the Bellator 184 headliner on Friday at the Winstar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma. All three cageside judges scored it for Caldwell (11-1, 8-1 Bellator MMA): 48-47, 48-47 and 50-45. Dantas (20-5, 10-2 Bellator MMA) enjoyed success in bursts -- he mounted the Alliance MMA rep in the third round and fished for a rear-naked choke in the fourth -- but they were few and far between. Caldwell repeatedly pinned him to the fence, killing valuable time and momentum amid building frustration. He executed a belly-to-back suplex in the first round, dropped Dantas to a knee with a standing elbow in the second and opened a cut near his left eye with some ground-and-pound in the fourth. Needing a finish, Dantas failed in his bid to turn the tide in Round 5. The loss snapped a four-fight winning streak for Dantas. In the featherweight co-main event, Roufusport ’s Emmanuel Sanchez secured his signature victory and submitted two-time champion Daniel Straus with a third-round triangle choke.

UFC 216 Bonuses: Johnson, Vannata, Green, Moraga Garner $50K Awards

They’re going to be talking about Demetrious Johnson ’s submission of Ray Borg for quite some time. “Mighty Mouse” received a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his record-breaking victory over Borg in the UFC 216 co-main event on Saturday night — and he authored a serious “Submission of the Year” candidate in the process. With time winding down in the fifth frame, Johnson executed a belly-to-back suplex, released Borg in midair and transitioned to an armbar to earn a tapout 3:15 into the period. Elsewhere, Lando Vannata and Bobby Green earned “Fight of Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their wild lightweight scrap. Vannata appeared to be on the verge of a finish in the opening stanza, but Green was able to recover after the Jackson-Wink product was deducted a point for an illegal knee. For the final two rounds, the two combatants went back-and-forth, ultimately battling to a majority draw. Finally, John Moraga pocketed the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for his first-round knockout of Russian prospect Magomed Bibulatov .

Conor McGregor's coach still prefers Nate Diaz trilogy over title unification bout with Tony Ferguson  #UFC

UFC 216 Salaries: Tony Ferguson Takes $500K, Mark Godbeer Makes $30K Without Fighting

Tony Ferguson is at least half million dollars richer after his Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight title win. On the other hand, he actually had to fight to get it. The official payouts for UFC 216 released by the Nevada Athletic Commission show that “El Cucuy” made $500,000 — $250,000 to show and the same figure to win — for his third-round triangle choke over Kevin Lee , while Lee made $250,000. UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson set the consecutive UFC title defense record in the co-headliner, taking his 11th straight title fight win over Ray Borg . For his “Submission of the Year” shoo-in, “Mighty Mouse” earned a reported $370,000 flat with no win bonus. Borg’s pay was $100,000. UFC 216 took place Oct. 7 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The interesting parts of the UFC 216 payout ledger lay elsewhere. The card featured two lightweight bouts ending in draws — Beneil Dariush - Evan Dunham and the “Fight of the Night” between Bobby Green and Lando Vannata — meaning that all four 155-pounders walked away with just their show money.

If St-Pierre were to beat Bisping at UFC 217, he would be champion two weight classes above McGregor. They could meet in the middle if a fight ever were to come together, but St-Pierre said he doesn’t see it as realistic, mainly because he has no desire to chase a smaller fighter.

What those kids choose a profession remains to be seen, but the champ said if they go into fighting, the upcoming match could be the first of many between the families.

One Championship Reveals Full Card for Nov. 3 in Myanmar, Replete With Local Lethwei Talent

One Championship ’s return to Myanmar now has a full card. Monday, One revealed its full lineup for “Hero's Dream,” which takes place on Nov. 3 at the Thuwunna National Indoor Stadium in Yangon. Unsurprisingly, the undercard is replete with local Myanma talent, many of them practitioners of lethwei, often archaically referred to as “Burmese boxing,” a martial art similar to muay Thai but with headbutts deemed legal attacks. The promotion announced the card’s headliner last week, revealing a unique main event between One’s 205-pound champion and Myanmar native Aung La N Sang and heavyweight kickboxer Alain Ngalani in an openweight, five-round contest. Additional bouts announced for the “Hero’s Dream” include: a battle of native lethwei fighters as undefeated lightweight Phoe Thaw faces Saw Ba Oo ; Chinese national freestyle wrestling champion Haobin Ma meeting the Philippines’ Eugene Toquero at 135 pounds; unbeaten lethwei exponent Tha Pyay Nyo squaring off with debuting Bangladeshi featherweight Asraful Islam; Thai kickboxer Pongsiri Mitsatit doing battle with Filipino standout Jeremy Miado in a 125-pound affair; and lethwei stars Saw Min Min and Ye Thway Ne will lock up at bantamweight The undercard is also highlighted by several other notable Chinese talents: undefeated Chinese jiu-jitsu artist Chen Lei meets Filipino Bernard Soriano at 155 pounds; Chinese “Supermom” Jie Miao goes opposite Australian Amira Hafizovic at flyweight; and Shanghai native Zehao Zhang does battle with Indian muay Thai champion Bala Shetty .

BREAKING | Justin Gaethje and Eddie Alvarez is Confirmed for UFC 218 |

Coach Mark Henry will have his hands full. Frankie Edgar, also trained by Henry, will challenge Max Holloway for the UFC featherweight title on the same card. Which is also a fight we had broke the news about. Justin Gaethje made a huge impact in the UFC after taking out top-five Michael Johnson. A fight with former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez has the power to grant him number one contender status for either a fight with the winner of Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee, or maybe a fight with Conor McGregor if the win is devastating enough. Either way, you’re not going to want to make any plans on Saturday, December 2nd when UFC 218 goes down in Detroit.

‘Mighty Mouse’ on Spectacular Submission: ‘I’ve Been Doing That for a Long Time in the Gym’

While Demetrious Johnson ’s mid-air release suplex to armbar submission of Ray Borg was a novelty to most anyone watching UFC 216 , for “Mighty Mouse” it was almost routine. “I looked for that suplex to armbar. I’ve been doing that for a long time in the gym. I’ve kind of mastered that submission and no one has ever done it,” Johnson said. [AMC Pankration Coach] Matt [Hume] is always telling me to hit it and I had it, my energy was full, and I was like ‘Here we go.’ I’m just happy I was able to do it.” Added Borg, “I don’t even think it was really a submission. Sometimes you just make s—t up.” Prior to his spectacular finish, which will likely top many “Submission of the Year” lists for 2017, Johnson was clinical in his domination of Borg. Johnson outlanded his foe 172 to 22 in total strikes, went 8-for-8 on takedowns and passed guard 19 times. The 24-year-old Jackson-Wink MMA product rarely had any moments of daylight in the co-main event bout. “I laughed at him a couple times during the fight, because he did some sneaky s—t,” Borg said.

Fabricio Werdum: 5 Defining Moments

It would be understandable if Fabricio Werdum shows a sense of urgency at this stage of his career. Now 40 years of age and 15 years deep into his exceptional run as a professional mixed martial artist, the two-time Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist and former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight titleholder will face Derrick Lewis in a featured UFC 216 showdown this Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Werdum needs a victory to stay in the discussion as a possible No. 1 contender in the division he once ruled. The Kings MMA export has lost twice in three appearances and last competed at UFC 213 on July 8, when he wound up on the wrong side of a majority decision against longtime rival Alistair Overeem . Notable wins over Travis Browne (twice), 2001 K-1 World Grand Prix winner Mark Hunt , former EliteXC champion Antonio Silva and onetime International Fight League titleholder Roy Nelson dot his outstanding resume. Ahead of Werdum’s three-round battle with Lewis, here are five moments that have come to define him: 1.

Opinion: The Missed Opportunities of UFC 216

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday returns to Las Vegas for UFC 216 . Unlike previous cards with two title fights, this one seems to have little hype surrounding it. Recent promotional muscle has gone toward the Floyd Mayweather Jr.- Conor McGregor boxing blockbuster and the forthcoming return of Georges St. Pierre , which highlights UFC 217 in November. As a result, the events in between have been lost in the shuffle. Considering the potential marketing goldmines present at UFC 216, it’s unfortunate so little has been done to draw attention to the card. Never mind the fact that flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson was rebooked for the co-main event slot and can break Anderson Silva ’s title defense record with a win against Ray Borg . UFC 216 also features two of MMA’s most charismatic and entertaining personalities: Kevin Lee and Derrick Lewis .
