Cain Velasquez: All Focus, No Excuses

Cain Velasquez wanted to fight in Houston. Coming out of his UFC 188 loss to Fabricio Werdum in June, the 33-year-old heavyweight liked the idea of getting back into the Octagon quickly and sharing the bill with his close friend and training partner Daniel Cormier, who headlined last weekend’s Pay-Per-View event at the Toyota Center, seemed like a logical fit. But a phone call from UFC President Dana White prompted him to shift his plans. “I came back and we heard about DC’s fight, so right away, I was training with him,” the former champion, who still made the trip to Houston to support his friend and take part in the UFC 192 Q&A, said. “I was looking at an October fight too – that’s what I wanted to do. “I got a call from Dana and he says he wants me to fight (Fabricio) Werdum again and I said, ‘I’m happy to do that.’ He knows that I wanted to fight in October and he was wondering if I wanted to do that and if I didn’t want to wait and I was like, ‘No man – I want to wait for that fight; that’s the fight that I want.

The Indomitable Fight Inside Howard Davis Jr.

Howard Davis Jr. founded Fight Time Promotions in Florida. | Photo: Dave Mandel/ “It was a surreal moment.” Howard Davis Jr. was 20 years old and had only been boxing for five years when he entered the ring at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. He was in the gold-medal match against Romania’s Simion Cutov, and on top of everything else, his mother had passed away just days prior, prompting him to consider leaving the Olympics to be at her funeral. True to the spirit that would later come to define him, every obstacle and hardship became more motivation to fight. By the time he got a chance to lay flowers on his mother’s grave, Davis had a gold medal and the Val Baker Award for the Most Outstanding Boxer of the Olympics. However, the surreal moment to which he was referring would not come for another four decades, when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer earlier this year. “I went into shock. I started crying,” Davis said, but once the initial vertigo subsided, he regained his calm determination.

Opinion: Dissolve the UFC Flyweight Division, a Modest Proposal

Demetrious Johnson has flopped at the box office, despite his obvious talents. | Photo: Dave Mandel/ Viewers at UFC 192 on Saturday were treated to what has unfortunately become a familiar scene. Two elite flyweight fighters entered the cage for an important bout in the division at the Toyota Center in Houston. In one corner was Ali Bagautinov , the dangerous sambo champion who fought for the title in his most recent bout. In the other was Joseph Benavidez , one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world and a man who now holds a 23-0 record against opponents not named Demetrious Johnson or Dominick Cruz . The fight was one of the most interesting on paper in the division this year; and fans reacted with silence. The library-like conditions were interrupted only by sporadic boos, as the division that nobody asked for delivered another fight that nobody appeared to want to see. At the end of 15 minutes featuring a lot of speed and movement, the attributes the Ultimate Fighting Championship has attempted to emphasize to sell the division, we went to the judges’ scorecards.

Sherdog’s Top 10: Silent Killers - Top 10

It seems safe to assume that a high percentage of fight fans love loud-mouthed trash talkers. They sell fights better than anyone: Guys like Conor McGregor , Tito Ortiz and Brock Lesnar have driven ratings and pay-per-view buys through the roof with their sharp tongues. Loved by some and hated by others, they draw the attention to MMA. On the opposite side of the spectrum are the fighters who hardly ever have to open their mouths. They are not overly fond of conducting interviews, usually remain stoic during press conferences and hardly -- if ever -- engage in verbal sparring matches with opponents. Such fighters prefer to let their hands, feet, knees and elbows do the talking. The latest installment in the Sherdog Top 10 series series examines the greatest silent killers in mixed martial arts history. *** Honorable Mentions: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira , Mirko Filipovic , Royce Gracie , Randy Couture , Rich Franklin , Sergei Kharitonov *** Number 10 » Catching Dreams

The Martial Chronicles: Fighting Like a Girl 2

Meanwhile, more of the invading host came from other directions. The bodyguard and members of the audience vigorously repelled the attack, wielding clubs, batons, poles, planks, or anything they could seize, while the police laid about right and left with their batons, their violence being far the greater. Men and women were seen on all sideswith blood streaming down their faces, and there were cries for a doctor. In the middle of the struggle, several revolver shots rang out, and the woman who was firing the revolver--which I should explain was loaded with blank cartridges only--was able to terrorise and keep at bay a whole body of police.I had been surrounded by members of the bodyguard, who hurried me towards the stairs from the platform. The police, however, overtook us, and in spite of the resistance of the bodyguard, they seized me and dragged me down the narrow stair at the back of the hall. There a cab was waiting. I was pushed violently into it, and thrown on the floor, the seats being occupied by as many constables as could crowd inside.

One Man’s View: The Beauty & Beast of the Title Shot

Editor's note: The views & opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. The yin and yang of an Ultimate Fighting Championship led by Dana White were on full display at UFC 192 , and it all had to do with decisions following the fallout of Saturday’s event. As we all know, White is an emotional person who is truly a fan of the sport. So when things happen to the product he loves, there is oftentimes a kneejerk reaction. Case in point, the UFC 192 co-main event between Johny Hendricks and Tyron Woodley that was scrapped thanks to the former Oklahoma State University wrestler’s well-documented weight-cutting issues. There were two major takeaways from his subsequent decisions that epitomize White’s tenure and the reason why so many are enamored with him, while others love to hate him. To be more specific, it’s the reason why fans love that he often caters to their desires and fighters loathe how unreliable the sport’s landscape can play out.

Editor's note: The views & opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Thursday in Tokyo, phoenix-esque promoter and aging Ken doll Nobuyuki Sakakibara stood in the Midtown Tokyo Hotel and for the first time in years, got to do what seems to make him happiest: announce a bunch of wild and bizarre trappings for a large-scale Japanese mixed martial arts card. We've known for weeks now that Sakakibara was planning a New Year's Eve card in Japan, but not just a simple series of fights on Dec. 31, an attempted return to form, a potential lightning strike to harken back to the kakutogi boom in Japan, years gone now, a time when, insanely, combat sports programs occupied three of Japan's five major broadcasters on New Year's Eve, the country's premiere TV watching night. We've known Fedor Emelianenko would headline and the ultimately, the string-pullers for the event were Sakakibara's old crew, the Dream Stage Entertainment squad from mid-to-late era Pride Fighting Championships , who ultimately honored Sakakibara by starting Dream , while their leader retired to sleepy Okinawa to dedicate himself to boosting the future of an obscure soccer team.

Trading Shots: On the myths of MMA, both in and out of the cage

And, Danny, I say this as a guy who has a PRIDE 2006 Grand Prix DVD on the shelf in his basement. I also say it as a guy who has watched that DVD recently. It’s not awful, but it is what I would call the beginning of the modern MMA era. You go back past the middle of the last decade, and you see a lot of ugly, sloppy stuff. Which makes sense, in a way, because back then we were still in the process of figuring out what this sport was, as well as what worked and what didn’t.

UFC Fight Night: Belfort vs. Henderson 3 fight card

For the 3rd (and probably) final time, Vitor Belfort and Dan Henderson will fight each other. Henderson won the first one in PRIDE, with Belfort failing his drug test afterwards. Belfort evened the score in 2013 with a head kick knockout, making him the first man to ever stop Hendo with strikes. With Belfort coming off a title fight loss vs. Chris Weidman and Henderson off a brutal 1st round KO win vs. Tim Boetsch, these two will meet again, this time at 185 pounds in the UFC Fight Night main event in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Kickboxing: Joe Schilling Stops Jason Wilnis at Glory 24; Adegbuyi Wins Heavyweight Tourney

American kickboxer Joe Schilling was expected to fight rival Artem Levin on Friday night in the main event of Glory 24. When defending middleweight champ Levin had to withdraw several weeks ago due to an elbow injury, Schilling was instead paired with replacement Jason Wilnis. Schilling (20-6, 12 KOs) and Wilnis (25-6-1, 7 KOs) tore into each other from the start, but “Stitch ‘Em Up” was the sharper and quicker of the two. After a dominant opening round, Schilling looked to be on his way to a stoppage when he dropped his foe with a left hook early in the second. Wilnis showed grit and stormed back into the fight, rocking Schilling with a sweeping overhand right. Schilling’s legs buckled, and when Wilnis chased after him, he landed another right to the face. Schilling was ready to go, but the veteran wisely tied up the Dutch fighter. Schilling was able to clear his head enough to survive the round, but not before the two engaged in another wild exchange. Just as the fight seemed ready to kick into overdrive, Wilnis had to have the towel thrown in because of a badly broken toe he suffered in the second.

Vale Tudo Relics: The Life and Times of Helio Gracie - Eternal Impact

Considered one of the most influential figures in martial arts history, Helio Gracie, the father of modern jiu-jitsu died at the age of 95 in 2009. He would be 102 years old if he were alive today. Andre Lazaroni, a state deputy in Rio de Janeiro, paid homage to Gracie by naming his birthday, Oct. 1, as Vale Tudo Day in the city. A ceremony was held at Tiradentes Palace, with many fighters in attendance, including Gracie’s top student, Joao Alberto Barreto. MMA, UFC and BJJ: Those acronyms would not exist in their current forms if it were not for the perseverance of Helio and his older brother, Carlos Gracie. Thanks to them, the martial art that was brought to Brazil from Japan by Mitsuyo Maeda Koma was preserved and later transformed into what we now know as vale tudo or mixed martial arts. Martial Arts: Religion, Philosophy or Way of Life? The Gracie brothers became obsessed with the art they had been taught by Koma and created a life philosophy based on nutrition, health and furthering jiu-jitsu. To achieve this, they adopted strict rules for themselves, and they followed them until their last days.
