Boxing News: Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin Barely Breaks Sweat Against Marco Antonio Rubio

WATCH - A slow motion replay of @GGGBoxing's 2nd round KO vs. Rubio - — HBOboxing (@HBOboxing) October 19, 2014 Virtually everybody in the boxing world expected Gennady Golovkin to topple tough Mexican slugger Marco Antonio Rubio at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. Most of those same people believed “GGG” would knock him out. Those people were right. Golovkin barely broke a sweat against the rugged knockout artist on his way to a sizzling second round KO, giving him 18 consecutive stoppages along the way. Rubio tried his best to stand and bang with the powerful Kazakhstani bomber, but his attempts weren’t enough because early on in the second round, Rubio (59-7-1, 52 KOs) was looking up at referee Jack Riess. Rubio was felled by a scorching right uppercut after a left hand. The punch caused Rubio to sag into the ropes, allowing Golovkin to unload until Rubio was flat on his back. Rubio barely beat the count and when he got up, he half-heartedly protested that he couldn’t hear Riess’ count. Golovkin took his time in finding the openings Rubio gave him and once he did, the fight was over.

Weighing the Options of Anderson Silva | FIGHTLAND

Then there are the light heavyweight superfights. After his losses to Weidman, calls for Silva versus Jon Jones all but evaporated. But that doesn’t mean he’s without exciting options at 205. I’ll provide some examples. Sure, they’re both on a bit of skid, but who wouldn’t be interested in Silva vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua? The pair of Brazilian strikers would surely entertain. Then there’s Shogun versus Rashad Evans. Could Silva touch Suga’s chin the way Lyoto Machida did? Or would Rashad be too strong for the old king of the middleweight division? I’d watch just to find out. Or, how about a rematch with Dan Henderson? That rematch nearly came to fruition a few years back when Silva was still the middleweight champ. Would it have the same implications now? No. But just like Henderson’s fight with Fedor Emelianenko, it’s always fun to watch legends trade punches.

MMA on Instagram: Lots of Food, a Couple Cats, Love Is in the Air

Akira Corassani stuck in the airport: "Stuck at the airport in Copenhagen, a nice 2.5 hour delay. Taking a couple of deep breaths and laughing inside. Metal detector goes off as I'm passing through, an older man is searching me for possible threats to humanity. Thinking of buying an overpriced sandwich, it's probably made with love, not! I can't really decide if I should eat or not, don't want to be full when that delicious high quality airplane food is served. It's 2014 and the WiFi is playing Hide and Seek. I see a group of younger girls on their way to most likely a party trip. A couple of them will probably come back with alcohol intoxication and broken hearts. Went to a store acting as if I was interested in buying a perfume, grabbed one of the TEST bottles and sprayed myself nicely. Left without buying anything. So... I smell good, I'm hungry and excited for airplane food, the WiFi got better by my gate and I'm ready for take off! Thank you for sharing this moment with me, I truly wish I could continue with updates but my flight has no WiFi. Much love, off I go!"

Are we in the Anthropocene? Scientists ask if this is the new epoch of humans

The secretary of the working group, Colin Waters, a principal mapping geologist at the British Geological Survey, said the term has come to mean different things as it has spread to different groups, a situation that can only end in headaches. “It’s so widely used now that there are at least three journals using the term Anthropocene in their titles, yet no-one knows what is meant by the term. It’s like having a set of publications on the Jurassic without anyone knowing what the word Jurassic means. We need a common understanding,” he said.

Bellator champ Joe Warren still eyes Olympic gold medal

Trading Shots: Downes and Fowlkes on the possible return of Georges St-Pierre

As far as the “he doesn’t need the money,” what bearing does that have? In fact, I see that as a positive. If St-Pierre said that he returned to fighting because he needed to support himself, that would be an even greater tragedy. Did you follow the end of Jens Pulver’s career? Do you like your job, Ben? Would you still be writing even if you had enough money to support your family? Of course you would. Yes, being a journalist doesn’t involve the same health risks as fighting (other than an increased risk of liver damage), but some people have professions that they thoroughly enjoy. GSP didn’t enjoy the life of a fighter so much, and that’s why he left. After taking some time off, if he decides he wants to return, why shouldn’t he?

Royce Gracie believes Brazilian fighters lack strategy: ‘You can’t just be tough and talented’

"It’s a strategy game. You can’t just be tough and talented," Gracie told "People outside (of Brazil) knows how to work with strategy really well. You have to know your opponent and take him out of his game. It might look easy at the end, but he trained really hard to make you do this, make this wrong step, and then knock you out in 30 seconds. That’s strategy. I think (Brazilian fighters) are lacking that."

Technically everywhere else, he’s not very good,” McCall said. “I had the same game plan for the past two people as Lineker: speed, numbers, and things like that. It’s not rocket science. UFC on FOX 13 is the opportunity Miocic has been waiting for -- a chance for the division's most poorly-kept secret to emerge as the next contender to the heavyweight throne. Chael Sonnen talks Conor McGregor and Raphael Assuncao's contrasting ability to sell fights

"Yeah, but I'm ripping someone off, too. I can't remember who else did that, maybe that one was an original, maybe I came up with that one on my own. But so what? We're all stealing each other's ideas, that's what the world is. We don't need to go out there and create new things. Not everything is a new recipe. If somebody's doing something and you like what they're doing, find out what they did to get there and go out and copy it. Whether Conor McGregor's grabbing something that I used to do, or I'm grabbing something that somebody else used to do - if something works you go out there and you take from it. You don't sit back and criticize it."

Showtime airs historic MMA event with no publicity

A piece of MMA history aired out of the blue on Thursday night, when Showtime Extreme, with little if any advanced publicity, broadcast the first-ever Strikeforce MMA show from March 10, 2006. Not only was it the debut of the promotion, but it was the first fully sanctioned MMA event in the state of California. There was more than a little trepidation prior to this event. There had never been MMA at a major arena in California, with events relegated to Native American casinos. This event would get more publicity, and at the time, create more controversy than any event the commission would govern during that era. There was fear the decision to allow the sport would backfire, whether it would be a serious injury, or even spectator violence. While such things could and do happen at any sporting event, the negatives would almost guaranteed be magnified by the press when allowing something that most didn't consider a sport. Because Scott Coker had a long history of promoting successful kickboxing events in San Jose, his getting the first show was by design of the commission. It was figured giving the first show, which would have the biggest media spotlight, to a promoter they could trust, was the smart percentage move.

For UFC champs, right about now MMA stands for Mostly Modern Americans

Right smack dab in the middle of the UFC’s process of globalization, all of its champions share something peculiar in common: America. Everybody with a UFC belt in the fourth quarter of the year 2014 is American. Everyone except Brazilian Jose Aldo , who is fighting not just to retain his title at UFC 179 against uber-American big game hunter Chad Mendes , but to prevent the symbolic bald eagle from flying off with the other continents in its talons. (Here’s where you cue this song and hum along for the rest of the column). On Oct. 25, down in the Rio de Janeiro, Mendes could make it a clean sweep for the Stars & Stripes, forcing the rest of the world to fly their singlets at half-mast. Pretty soon, we won’t need the subtitles on the promos anymore. That might seem like good news for Hemi-powered patriots and xenophobes, but…man, it starts to feel a little centric for a promotion that speaks so many languages. For all the talk of global expansion, it sure seems like things are zeroing in on the country with all the spoils. So, what is happening? Didn’t the Gracies invent this sport? Where are you at, Japan? What gives, Canada? Did you lose interest, Russia? Belarus? Sweden? Australia? Holland? England? Montana? What are they training in The Azores these days? Where have you gone, Xavier Foupa-Pokam? Where in the hell have you gone.

Fighter Diet FAQ

Complaint 15: "I like berries, lard, beef, fruit, nuts and fish. I don't touch sugar or dairy. I've been following this diet for 5 months but can't lose any flab" Solution: That sounds like Paleo diet to me? I guess it's time to change what you're doing. I'm not a fan of Paleo and when I say I'm not they tell me how many studies there have been done who show people lose fat on this diet. OF COURSE they do when they go from eating TOO many calories, TOO much sugar, TOO many carbs combined with TOO much fat and chronic surplus of calories. However, did they lose fat or did they lose fat and muscle plus got skinny fat? All diet methods have pros and cons, but Paleo isn't the holy grail and so are no other. ALL methods will have drawbacks. The key is to find the approach YOU get results with that you can maintain and the approach you enjoy.

After matchup approval delays, Swedish MMA Federation seeks to clarify, improve process

“The root of the matter is that the SMMAF is required to look past an athlete’s on-paper record and consider criteria as outlined in its agreement with the Swedish government,” Halldin said. “Our sanctioning role is closely watched by government officials who have a regular presence at events. The SMMAF and the government have agreed on a Competitor Safety Ladder for which safe and consistent athletic progression is the basis and which dictates that athletes must move through levels of low impact to semi-full contact to full contact to high-level amateur before competing under national professional rules. To compete under national rules, individual matches do not need to be approved but must be matched by a licensed matchmaker. Competition under Unified Rules is allowed as the top professional level of the Competitor Safety Ladder, however matches under that rule set must be approved on a case-by-case basis. It means assessing the athlete who has to be in very good physical and mental form, have a high technical skill and documented competence in full-contact martial arts, as well as professional mixed martial arts experience against legitimate competition.
