Matchmaker Says Khabib Nurmagomedov Was Offered Tony Ferguson at UFC 217 | MMAWeekly.com

At UFC 216, Tony Ferguson will look to build on his incredible nine fight win streak when he faces off against rising star Kevin Lee with the winner being crowned as interim lightweight champion. While Ferguson's status as a top lightweight contender was never in question, Lee remained an interesting choice considering he had only just recently climbed into the rankings following wins over notable names such as Michael Chiesa and Francisco Trinaldo. The other reason the UFC 216 main event was questioned so heavily was due to undefeated Russian wrecking machine Khabib Nurmagomedov still looming large over the division despite dropping out of his previously scheduled bout against Ferguson due to his struggles to make weight. Well according to UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby, the organization still had plans to match up Nurmagomedov against Ferguson as part of the star-studded UFC 217 card in New York, but it turns out the opportunity was declined, which is why the offer was then made to Lee

5 Things You Might Not Know About Scott Coker

When someone sits down to write the history of mixed martial arts someday, Scott Coker will have a prominent place in it. As Strikeforce founder and current president of Bellator MMA , the 54-year-old executive has for years served as one of the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s chief rivals. His subtle, reserved approach to fight promotion stands in stark contrast to the in-your-face style of UFC President Dana White. Coker arrived on the MMA scene in 2006 and built Strikeforce into a combat sports powerhouse before selling the organization to UFC parent company Zuffa LLC in March 2011. After a brief hiatus, he was tapped lead Bellator on June 18, 2014. Coker with the backing Viacom has driven Bellator to new heights, turning away from its original tournament-based format while supplementing home-grown talent with more familiar names. Under his direction, the promotion has signed a number of high-profile free agents, from Benson Henderson, Gegard Mousasi and Ryan Bader to Lorenz Larkin, Matt Mitrione, Frank Mir and Roy Nelson. With Bellator 184 approaching on Friday in Thackerville, Oklahoma, here are five things you might not know about Coker: 1.

Tony Ferguson: By The Numbers

Tony Ferguson has nothing left to accomplish as a contender. “The Ultimate Fighter 13” winner will take on Xtreme Couture ’s Kevin Lee for the interim Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight title in the UFC 216 main event this Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The man who emerges with his hand raised figures to be in line for a blockbuster unification bout with undisputed champion Conor McGregor , provided the “Notorious” Irishman does not decide to take another detour away from mixed martial arts. Ferguson has compiled a stellar 12-1 record since he joined the UFC roster a little more than six years ago, establishing himself as one of the world’s premier lightweights and one of the sport’s most exciting competitors. “El Cucuy” last competed at UFC Fight Night 98 on Nov. 5, when he captured a five-round unanimous decision from former champion Rafael dos Anjos in what was arguably the most significant victory of his career. As he barrels ahead toward his high-stakes showdown with Lee, here are some of the numbers that have come to define Ferguson: 5.

Werdum Talks: 'I wanted to snap Tony Ferguson's head' - MMA Imports

“I know the guy. He’s not a friend, but I know the guy. He came in with all this f*cking negative energy, I went to shake his hands and he wasn’t pleasant. That’s okay, maybe he’s focused, he’s hungry, on a diet, but that’s his problem, so I stayed cool. When I went to talk to another reporter he tells me to shut up? What is this? Are you crazy? I didn’t beat him up there because something could happen and I could lose my fight. I’d break everything there. That’s why I didn’t do anything, especially in consideration to the UFC and Chris, who was coordinating everything there. F*ck, man. How can this guy come and tell me to shut up?”

After Beginning Career as Teen, Rory MacDonald Sees ‘Another 10 Good Years’ in MMA

Rory MacDonald made his professional mixed martial arts debut at the tender age of 16, on a card Extreme Challenge 4 in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada. MacDonald won that night, defeating Terry Thiara via rear-naked choke in the opening stanza. He kept on winning, notching 10 consecutive victories before succumbing to a last-minute firestorm from Carlos Condit in his second UFC appearance in June 2010. Even before he reached his 20s, MacDonald took on tough competition, as he earned triumphs over future UFC talents Jordan Mein and Kajan Johnson in his formative years. MacDonald wouldn’t recommend such an early start in MMA for everyone, but for him, he says it was the right move. “I think it’s case to case and person to person. I saw myself as a hardcore person at that age…But I guess I took myself very seriously, and I was mature in a different way,” MacDonald said on the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Beatdown” show . “I was ready for combat. Mentally and physically I prepared for it. It’s just who I was inside.

Douglas Lima Predicts KO of Rory MacDonald: ‘I’m Gonna Find That Jaw’

Douglas Lima has seen Rory MacDonald fail to make the final bell before in his MMA career, and he believes he has what it takes to join the elite company that has finished “The Red King” inside the cage. Lima will defend his welterweight crown against MacDonald in the main event of Bellator’s Jan. 20 card at the Forum in Los Angeles. The card will air on the Paramount Network – formerly known as Spike – at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT. Of all the new talent to have signed with Bellator during the Scott Coker regime, MacDonald is perhaps the promotion’s most prized free agent acquisition. A former UFC title challenger, the Tristar Gym export owns victories over the likes of Tyron Woodley , Demian Maia , B.J. Penn , Nate Diaz and Jake Ellenberger , to name a few. His championship loss to Robbie Lawler at UFC 189 is regarded as one of the best fights in the history of the Las Vegas-based organization. Lima, who is coming off a decision win over Lorenz Larkin , another former UFC talent, takes pride in beating opponents from the sport’s largest MMA promotion.

12
Rory MacDonald: I’m on a Different Level Than Rest of Bellator Welterweight Division

Rory MacDonald is a believer in the talent of Bellator MMA’s welterweight division, but he still considers himself to be a level above everyone in his new home. That includes reigning champion Douglas Lima , who he will face in the main event when Bellator travels to Los Angeles on Jan. 20. Lima is coming off a five-round verdict over Lorenz Larkin — another UFC signee — on June 24. “It’s healthy that guys are crossing over from UFC. We’ve see Lorenz Larkin go 0-2. I think that validates the division and the talent in it. Especially because he was coming off a win streak and Top 10. All these things they open people’s eyes to the reality of the skill set over here in Bellator,” MacDonald said on the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Beatdown” show . “Even that said, I don’t think these guys are gonna look all that great against me. I feel I’m on a whole other level at the moment and I’m going to go out there and show it.” MacDonald, who came up short in a bid for UFC gold against Robbie Lawler in an unforgettable brawl in 2015, will have a chance to capture gold in a new promotion.

Ray Borg Explains Decision Not to Work with Nutritionist Prior to UFC 216 Title Shot

Despite all the speculation to the contrary, Ray Borg insists that his withdrawal from a flyweight championship bout against Demetrious Johnson at UFC 215 was not weight-cut related. “You can’t put off the inevitable,” Borg said during a media call to promote UFC 216. “Everyone at my camp was sick, my wife was sick. I was just banking on not catching it, but it happened. There’s not a whole lot you can do.” The headlining bout was canceled just two days before the Sept. 9 event, forcing the promotion to elevate the women’s bantamweight title clash between Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko to the main event. Borg did not get into specifics regarding the illness, but he continued to reiterate that it had nothing to do with cutting weight. “The diagnosis? I don’t know, I’m not a doctor,” Borg said. “[The UFC doctor] told me that I had a flu virus and that was it. I was throwing up – I had the shakes, I had the shivers – and it wasn’t like no weight-cutting type sickness. I just got the flu.” After the cancellation, Borg announced that he would be parting ways with Perfecting Athletes and nutritionist Michelle Ingels.

Tony Ferguson: If UFC Books McGregor-Diaz 3, Everything They Stand for ‘Goes Out the Window’

Tony Ferguson is approximately one week away from potentially becoming the UFC’s new interim lightweight champion should he get past Kevin Lee in the UFC 216 headliner. Normally, that would lead to a title unification bout against the division’s undisputed champion, but the the rules are a little bit different when the belt holder is Conor McGregor . The “Notorious” one is coming off a lucrative boxing match against Floyd Mayweather on Aug. 26 and is less likely than ever to settle for anything but another blockbuster fight. Whether that’s the Ferguson-Lee winner remains to be seen. Already there have been rumors of a McGregor vs. Nate Diaz trilogy bout, as their first two meetings both generated more than 1 million pay-per-view buys for the UFC. On Sunday, Irish Tabloid The Sunday World reported that McGregor-Diaz 3 was nearly official for UFC 219 on Dec. 30. However, UFC President Dana White quickly shot down that notion on Twitter. Still, that doesn’t mean McGregor vs. Diaz 3 won’t happen, even if Dec. 30 isn’t the date.

Flyweights Henry Cejudo, Sergio Pettis Rebooked for UFC 218 in Detroit

Flyweight contenders Henry Cejudo and Sergio Pettis will lock horns at UFC 218 in Detroit on Dec. 2. Cejudo confirmed the pairing via Twitter following an initial report from MMAFighting.com . Cejudo and Pettis were initially slated to fight at UFC 211 in May, but the Olympic gold medalist was forced to withdraw from the bout due to an injured hand. UFC 218 takes place at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit and also includes a pivotal heavyweight tilt between Alistair Overeem and Francis Ngannou . The evening’s main card airs on pay-per-view. Cejudo snapped a two-fight skid with arguably the most complete performance of his career, as he earned a technical knockout victory over Wilson Reis 25 seconds into the second round at UFC 215. “The Messenger” is now 11-2 in his pro career, with his only two defeats coming to reigning 125-pound champ Demetrious Johnson and perennial contender Joseph Benavidez . Pettis, meanwhile, enters the matchup on a four-bout winning streak. The 24-year-old Roufusport product last appeared at UFC Fight Night 114, where he garnered a five-round verdict against Brandon Moreno in the evening’s main event.

Trading Shots: CBD is off the banned list, but does it matter?

Point is, don’t act like it’s a given that the anti-doping forces will make common sense rule changes when appropriate. And isn’t that what we’ve been asking for? When people complain about fighters getting in trouble for substances that shouldn’t even be on the banned list, or when fighters get popped for weed and we all roll our eye in unison, aren’t we saying that we want to see some changes in how the regulatory forces approach this stuff?

“I’ve expressed my disappointment with Bellator,” MacDonald told MMAjunkie. “I had some conversations with (Bellator President) Scott Coker expressing that. I’m waiting. We’ll see. I hope that I’ll get at least three fights in during 2018.”

So, can Walt Harris get back his UFC 216 pay-per-view main-card slot?

When the fight card’s order was initially finalized, Harris, a 34-year-old who’s in his second UFC stint, was slated to kick off the main card. Heavyweights don’t always get placed in that high-profile slot – why kick off a $60 PPV with a potentially slow and sloppy heavyweight bout, after all? – but Harris and Godbeer have combined for 19 knockouts in 22 combined wins. In fact, all of Harris’ victories are knockouts.
