Darren Till Shocks 'Cowboy' Cerrone with Stunning First Round TKO in UFC Poland Main Event | MMAWeekly.com

With an undefeated record, Till was definitely a prospect on the rise in the UFC’s welterweight division, but he hadn’t faced anyone with the kind of veteran experience that Cerrone had going into Saturday’s main event. Cerrone is one of the winningest fighters in UFC history.

UFC Fight Night 118 Bonuses: Till, Blachowicz, Kelleher, Stasiak Receive $50K Awards

A rise to stardom certainly has its financial perks, as Darren Till learned following his first-round finish of Donald Cerrone in the UFC Fight Night 118 main event. Till received a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his work in Gdansk, Poland, on Saturday. The unbeaten Englishman put “Cowboy” on his heels with a two-punch combination, rocked him with a standing elbow and put him away with a flurry of unanswered strikes 4:20 into the opening stanza of the welterweight bout. Elsewhere, Polish light heavyweight Jan Blachowicz garnered the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for a submission of Devin Clark in a featured 205-pound affair. After being staggered by an overhand right from Clark in round one, Blachowicz recovered to secure a standing rear-naked choke 3:02 into the second round. It was just the 12th standing rear-naked choke finish in UFC history. Finally, Brian Kelleher and Damian Stasiak earned “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their preliminary bantamweight scrap.

Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Cerrone vs. Till’

In what was by all accounts a star-making performance, Darren Till obliterated a dyed-in-the-wool action hero and staked his claim as a legitimate contender in the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s welterweight division. The undefeated Englishman improved to 16-0-1 and wowed a crowd of 11,138, as he put away Donald Cerrone with punches in the first round of their UFC Fight Night 118 main event on Saturday at Ergo Arena in Gdansk, Poland. Cerrone wilted 4:20 into Round 1 of a fight that was never competitive, falling prey to one of the young lions at 170 pounds. Till walked down “Cowboy” with methodical purpose, setting the tone with a series of penetrating left hands. The finish was a thing of beauty. He buckled Cerrone’s knees with a sharp two-punch combination, backed him to the fence with a short elbow strike and then buried him with a ferocious punching volley that had the Jackson-Wink MMA star ducking for cover on all fours. Till joined Anthony Pettis , Rafael dos Anjos and Jorge Masvidal as the only men who have stopped Cerrone with strikes.

UFC Fight Night 118 results: Andre Fili tops Artem Lobov, but all eyes on Conor McGregor

As Fili’s foot speed began to slow, Lobov began having more success with his counter strikes, but Fili managed to shut him down with a takedown seemingly whenever he needed it. As Lobov was stuck on his back late in the second, that’s when McGregor got more involved from cageside, jumping out of his seat and getting so close to the action that referee Marc Goddard paused the fight to issue a warning to the UFC lightweight champ.

Referee Marc Goddard explains why he told Conor McGregor to leave the cage side area | BJPenn.com

“If Conor had stood up, stayed at his seat, then he could have shouted till his hearts content,” Goddard said. “That’s what he’s supposed to do. But what he simply cannot do, what he is not allowed to do, is approach the cage at any point and as I say act as the fourth corner. That’s unfair and unjust. Anyone who knows me will tell you I’ve done this forever, in any country in any situation. My integrity is not wavered and neither is the rules. We can’t allow that. I simply had to act.”

Andre Fili: Seeing Conor McGregor ‘Talking S—t’ Cageside Got Me Hyped Up

Conor McGregor wasn’t hard to find during SBG Ireland teammate Artem Lobov ’s bout at UFC Fight Night 118 on Saturday, but his presence might have actually been more beneficial to Lobov’s opponent. While McGregor paced back-and-forth around the Octagon yelling out instructions to his training partner, Andre Fili earned a unanimous verdict over Lobov in their featherweight bout. According to the Team Alpha Male product, McGregor only served to fuel his fire. “I feed off the kind of stuff that happened tonight. I saw Conor in the crowd and I got 10 times more excited. He was getting all hyped up, and I got even more hyped up. I feed off that. I love confrontation,” Fili said. “The only thing better than beating Artem right now is beating Artem and seeing McGregor right there talking s—t.” Coach @TheNotoriousMMA. #UFCGdansk pic.twitter.com/MbEiD7HpCi — UFC (@ufc) October 21, 2017 Fili’s victory was highlighted by a head kick knockdown in the first frame and four takedowns in the third round, as he swept the scorecards by identical 30-27 counts despite a game effort from Lobov.

Donald Cerrone vs. Darren Till Round 1 Referee Marc Goddard is the third man in the cage for tonight's 170-pound main event, scheduled for five rounds. Till Doesn’t Expect Title Shot Yet, But Believes ‘In My Heart of Hearts I Will Be Champ’

Darren Till believes he is following the blueprint of the biggest UFC star of all. Till wasn’t the least bit surprised of the ease with which he dispatched Donald Cerrone in the UFC Fight Night 118 headliner in Gdansk, Poland, on Saturday. The undefeated Englishman rolled through his opponent, overwhelming the popular “Cowboy” just 4:20 into the opening stanza. It was by far the most significant victory of Till’s career, and it was also his most dominant. Till likened his signature triumph to Conor McGregor ’s 13-second knockout of Jose Aldo at UFC 194, a victory that earned “The Notorious” Irishman the featherweight crown. “Look at McGregor and Aldo — Aldo was ruling for so long and was so dominant and then a young, hungry, trash talking guy comes up and defeats him. You could say this is like that,” Till said. “And I’m not taking anything away from Cowboy but he’s been around for a long time and now this is my time. I expect to keep on going and to have a long career. It’s time to hand the baton over and I feel like I am that guy.

Darren Till: By The Numbers

Darren Till looks the part of a future Ultimate Fighting Championship contender. His next test could reveal whether or not he is fit for primetime. Till will lock horns with Jackson-Wink MMA mainstay Donald Cerrone in the UFC Fight Night 118 main event on Saturday at Ergo Arena in Gdansk, Poland, where an upset victory over “Cowboy” could launch the undefeated Brit into a much higher tax bracket, competitively speaking. Spawned by Team Kaobon in his native England and the Astra Fight Team in his adoptive Brazil, the 24-year-old enters his showdown with Cerrone on a the heels of back-to-back wins against Jessin Ayari and former Resurrection Fighting Alliance champion Bojan Velickovic . Till last fought at UFC Fight Night 115 on Sept. 2, when he outpointed Velickovic across three rounds in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The lone blemish on his resume remains a majority draw with Nicolas Dalby in 2015, during which he fought through a shoulder injury that eventually required surgery and kept him on the shelf for nearly two years.
