Jose Aldo Keeps Featherweight Crown, Decisions Chad Mendes in UFC 179 Main Event

Mendes brought out the best in Jose Aldo .
Aldo leaned on accurate, high-velocity punches to retain the
Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight crown with a unanimous
decision in the UFC
179 “Aldo vs. Mendes 2” headliner on Saturday at Maracanazinho
Gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro. All three judges scored it 49-46 for

Mendes (16-2, 7-2 UFC) made him work for it. The Team Alpha Male
representative pushed a brutal pace, swarming Aldo with power
punches from the start. Mendes sat down the Brazilian juggernaut
with a clean left hook in the first round, only to later absorb
some heavy return fire. The champion had the challenger on wobbly
legs at the end of the frame, landing a scorching right hand well
after the bell. Mendes recovered between rounds and continued to
keep the pressure on.
Aldo was too quick, too technical and too skilled. Mendes made an
impression -- he jarred the Nova Uniao ace with an uppercut and
left hook in the third round -- but the finish he needed never came
For Phil Davis, Anderson Silva is His Brazilian Trifecta | MMAWeekly.com
Although he’ll want to cap off his trifecta with a Silva clash, Davis will likely have to settle for someone else. But if he’s so motivated to fight Brazilians in Brazil, Shogun Rua is scheduled to fight in two weeks. Once Rua gets through — win or lose — Jimi Manuwa, the timing for a match-up with with Davis might be just the right fit for both fighters. Rua will get a fight in his home country, and the “Brazilian Killer” will get a marquee fight with a legend of the sport to cap off his trifecta.

The Hit List: The Top 5 moments from UFC 179: Aldo vs. Mendes II
This was Aldo's toughest test to date and he delivered. Mendes improved exponentially since the first time the two fought in January 2012. This bout could not have been any more different. Aldo was bloodied and bruised, but overcame to take four out of the five rounds on the judges' scorecards. He's the only Brazilian left with a UFC title and it'll be hard to take that featherweight belt from him. Aldo is a deserving No. 2 on the pound-for-pound list after Jon Jones.

57-Year-Old Man Skydives From Stratosphere, Breaking Baumgartner’s Record | IFLScience
Eustace, a senior VP at Google, was lifted off a runway in Roswell, New Mexico by a large, helium-filled balloon. The balloon was attached directly to his spacesuit, pulling him up to his destination over a course of two hours. As he wasn’t transported with a capsule like Baumgartner, he was really able soak in the height at which he was going to fall and experience the changes in altitude. When it came time to jump, a small explosive device freed him from the balloon, and he descended over 25 miles to the Earth’s surface in just 15 minutes.
Virgin Birth Confirmed in World’s Longest Snake Species | IFLScience
Asexual reproduction (called parthenogenesis) occurs naturally in many insects and worms, and it’s even the norm for some vertebrates like lizards. Facultative parthenogenesis, on the other hand, is extremely rare in the wild. That’s when females who normally reproduce sexually start having babies without males. These sorts of virgin births have previously been documented in sharks, birds, lizards, and snakes living in zoos and other captive settings, but it was observed in the wild for the very first time just a couple of years ago. Booth’s team described these first cases of wild facultative parthenogenesis in two vipers—the copperhead and the cottonmouth—in 2012.

"It's just, 'Here's a pill, here's a Band-Aid.' The ayahuasca medicine is a way to, instead of sweeping your dirt under the rug, you know, these medicines force you to take the rug outside and beat it with a stick until it's clean," LeCompte explains. "And that's how I prefer to clean my house."

Willie Nelson Has a Fifth Degree Black Belt (And It's Not In Weed Smoking) | FIGHTLAND
Stoners and the elderly aren’t particularly known, on the whole, for their rigorous physical discipline but, just in time for 420—and his 81st birthday—Willie Nelson has made one hell of announcement that flies in the face of all of those stereotypes: the weed and country music icon is about to receive a fifth-degree black belt. According to pretty much every major country music website, Nelson will receive said fifth-degree black belt in Gong Kwon Yu Sul from Master Sam Um in Austin, Texas on April 27, just two days before The Red Headed Stranger turns 81.

Finally: Cat and Ronda Is Official | FIGHTLAND
Ronda is so dope and so good that at this point we’re even bored of it. Take that back—never bored of Ronda—but she’s literally had no competition up to this point, and having a healthy Cat Zingano come back to challenge that crown is exciting, because every time we hear that someone’s ready to step up to the best Judoka in the UFC, we think she might be the one to make us drop the crush and fall in love with someone new all over again.

In addition, the pace of the UFC’s schedule makes it difficult for the company to fill pay-per-view undercards with appropriate talent. Fighters like Michael Bisping and Urijah Faber, long mainstays of PPV undercards, are now being relegated to Fight Pass main events and free TV PPV lead-ins. This isn’t all bad – being able to watch “name” talent for free or on the cheap is great, but it detracts from the value of a pay-per-view. Dana White once admonished boxing promoters for stuffing club fighters and also-rans underneath Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. But the UFC quietly started to do the same thing with their biggest draws (Lesnar and St-Pierre), and it’s now become their norm.
(Video) "I Love Twitter" the tale of Mayhem Miller
I hate to see this and hear about these domestic violence charges not just because I think domestic violence is absolutely wrong but also because I’ve been a fan of Jason’s for many years. This most recent arrest reminded us of the downward spiral this one of a kind guy is riding. Anyways, enough about my thoughts and feelings. Check out this new coverage o Mayhem’s court appearance. Sad that local news only covers MMA when something bad happens. Oh man here i go again…..
Trading Shots: Downes, Fowlkes debate what to do with 'joker' Conor McGregor
The Conor McGregor Experience is still in full swing, but I wonder what the major takeaway from his popularity should be for other fighters. What can they learn from this? Should they trade in the sweatpants and T-shirts for three-piece suits? If you watch McGregor’s interviews, you can tell he has a few lines/catchphrases that he’s rehearsed. Is that the key? The UFC’s tagline is that “It’s as real as it gets,” but it feels like fans don’t really want that. They want a show. They want a personality. People never cared for Ben Askren until he started to speak his mind. Now the fact that he’s not in the UFC is a travesty. Maybe MMA isn’t a sport after all. Maybe it’s just entertainment.
UFC Fight Night: Bisping vs. Rockhold fight card
Australia will play host to a pivotal middleweight main event clash between Michael Bisping and Luke Rockhold. The last time Bisping fought in Australia he suffered a decision loss to Wanderlei Silva in 2010. Bisping is coming off a destruction of Cung Le, while Rockhold's last appearance saw him submit Tim Boetsch in April. These two have traded verbal barbs for quite some time, and their rivalry will finally culminate in an actual fight.

UFC 179: Aldo vs. Mendes 2 post-fight results - Fights to make for main card fighters
With the fights themselves out of the way, it's time to look forward to what's next for the main card fighters. This was not a particularly "strong" PPV, so I'm going to include the winners and losers from the main and co-main event, and then the winners for the rest of the main card.
Fabio Maldonado squashes beef with Anderson Silva at UFC 179
"He came close to the fence to celebrate and I said ‘come on, jump here,’ and I asked for apologies for not saying directly to him what I wanted to say instead of talking to the media about it," Maldonado said. "I had my bad days, and I talk too much. I told him I was happy to see him and his family, and he said we’re good, so I kissed his bald head.

Fuji Returns to PFC Hoping to Capture Win Against Newcomer Lechuga
While Fuji may be used to the lights of a PFC card this will be Lechuga’s first time fighting for the promotion but he’s no stranger to the fight game, having already won one bout. Even so, there is still the concern about the pressure of such a big night. But he has one big thing going for him; he’s not going into this alone. “I will admit that it’s a little nerve-wracking that I’m fighting on such a big card but more than anything I’m excited for the opportunity to fight in the same card as my teammate Jonathon Wyderko. It’s the exposure we need to show off the school we represent,” Lechuga said, referencing Muay Thai of Colorado and Colorado Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
UFC 179 Aftermath: Jose Aldo cements his spot on short list of all-time great champs
Down: Glover Teixeira Remember what David Loiseau's career looked like before he fought Rich Franklin , and what it was like after Franklin hammered him for 25 minutes? You can't help but wonder if we're seeing a version of the same from Teixeira. Last night was pretty much a setup for Teixeira to return to form, getting to fight on his home turf in a bout that seemed a favorable style matchup against a fighter coming off a humiliating loss. And yet, coming off his five-round beatdown loss against Jones in April, Teixeira looked gun-shy, a look we've never seen from him before. He could never get untracked. He turns 35 this week and has been at this game a long time. Teixeira's one of the most genuine people in the biz, so you hope this isn't the signal of an impending decline but it's hard not to look at it otherwise.

Ouch! Here's what Wilson Reis did to Scott Jorgensen's ribs at UFC 179
Soon after recovering from Jorgensen’s right hand, Reis unloaded a loud and clearly effective kick to the body. Jorgensen tried to shake it off, but the pain was obvious. Reis then swarmed, got the takedown, unloaded ground and pound, and ultimately earned a first-round tap-out from an arm-triangle choke.
Fighters React to Jose Aldo Retaining Featherweight Title at UFC 179 Via Twitter | MMAWeekly.com
Aldo almost finished Chad a few times, and I’m not even talking about that combination that he continued after the bell in the first round. He almost finished him in the third as well. The fact that some people are overlooking stuff like that and are claiming ‘he was robbed’ is completely ridiculous. That was literally the last thing on my mind after I saw the fight. Chad won at least one round, but at no point did he come close to finishing his opponent — he DID land a lot more clean shots than anyone has ever landed on Aldo however, which is very respectable.
Jose Aldo: If Conor McGregor Is Next, We’ll Do Great Promotion and a Great Fight
Aldo is one of the sport's pound-for-pound best. | Photo: Gleidson
While the featherweight title picture remains murky, at least when
it comes to who is the division’s No. 1 contender, there is no
question as to who sits atop the heap.
UFC President Dana White, who criticized Jose Aldo
following a lackluster five-round verdict over Ricardo
Lamas in February, was thoroughly impressed by the
featherweight king’s performance on Saturday night. In one of the
top fights of 2014, Aldo retained his 145-pound strap with a
hard-fought, 25-minute triumph over Chad Mendes
in the UFC
179 headliner in Rio de Janeiro.
“This fight was such a great fight and Chad Mendes came in, got
right in his chest and they went at it. I think he brought the best
out of Jose Aldo tonight,” White said at the post-fight press
conference. “This is the greatest featherweight championship fight
that I’ve ever seen. This fight took Jose Aldo to another level.
Everywhere. All over the world. Not just in Brazil. Tonight’s fight
