Six months after controversy, New York commission officially implements instant replay

Afterward, Weidman appealed the ruling , believing the NYSAC had misapplied its rules. But after a lengthy delay, the commission informed him it could “review video evidence in order to meet its obligation to render correct determinations and act in the best interest of the sport.” Officials cited a commission ruling in 2008 as precedent for the denial of appeal. In that case, a video review of an unintentional head-butt led to a no-contest ruling rather than a knockout win.

Sherdog’s Top 10: Fastest Knockouts in UFC History - Fastest Knockouts in UFC History

Crowds react to them like nothing else in combat sports. Fast knockouts have always been an indisputable draw of the Ultimate Fighting Championship , dating to its earliest iterations. They serve as wakeup calls for all those who practice mixed martial arts as a profession and have at times served as rallying cries for those who cannot stomach the violence that occurs inside the cage. During the 24 years the UFC has existed, its record books have been written and rewritten by quick-strike KOs, the authors as diverse as the methods they use: punches, knees, kicks, elbows and even slams. From blue-chip prospects and hall of fame-caliber champions to everything in between, the one common denominator has been the jolt of electricity they send coursing through arenas across the globe. The latest installment of the Sherdog Top 10 series examines the fastest submissions in UFC history: *** HONORABLE MENTIONS: Robert Emerson def. Manny Gamburyan -- Punches, 0:12 (UFC 87), Johny Hendricks def. Jon Fitch -- Punch, 0:12 (UFC 141); Gary Goodridge def.

Colby Covington Vows to Retire ‘One-Trick Pony’ Demian Maia in First Round

Colby Covington didn’t necessarily want to fight Demian Maia in hostile territory, but he knew it was his best chance to face the Brazilian submission specialist. Covington and Maia will square off in the welterweight co-main event at UFC Fight Night 119 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Saturday night. The evening’s main card will be televised on Fox Sports 1 beginning at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. “I don’t want to fight here, but it was the only way to face Demian,” Covington recently said. “Fighting in his home, in front of his fans. I know how Brazilians are and I hope they are very loud. But after the fight, I know they will be in silence.” Maia began his promotional tenure as a middleweight, eventually challenging for the title against Anderson Silva in 2010. The 39-year-old has arguably had his greatest success at 170 pounds, however. Since moving down a division in 2012, Maia has compiled a 10-3 record in the UFC. A seven-fight winning streak from 2014 to 2017 earned him a welterweight championship bout against Tyron Woodley , which Maia lost via unanimous decision after the reigning champ denied an astounding 21 takedown attempts.

Georges St. Pierre: Retirement Not a Certainty Even with Loss to Bisping at UFC 217

Georges St. Pierre ’s Octagon return might not be a one-and-done — even if he loses to Michael Bisping at UFC 217 . A little more than a month ago, St. Pierre told the New York Post that he would call it a career if he came up short against “The Count” at Madison Square Garden in New York on Nov. 4. “If I ever lose, I’m retired, it’s finished for me. I’m one fight away from retirement,” St-Pierre said then. “I don’t plan on losing but if I do, it’s finished.” However, the Tristar Gym stalwart sounded less certain about those plans during a media conference call on Thursday. Should he lose to Bisping in their middleweight title bout, his next move depends on the nature of that defeat. “It always depends how [I lose]. I can’t say right now, nothing is for sure, but it depends how; how it happens,” St. Pierre said. “Sometimes you win a fight and you should lose and sometimes you should lose, but you win. “It depends how it happens and how I feel – it depends on a lot of stuff – but I don’t see myself going away for a long time, so it’s going to be a good night.

Frankie Saenz, Merab Dvalishvili to Meet at UFC Fight Night 123 in Fresno

A bantamweight clash pitting Frankie Saenz against Merab Dvalishvili has been added to the UFC Fight Night 123 lineup. The Las Vegas-based promotion recently confirmed the booking. UFC Fight Night 123 takes place at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif., on Dec. 9 and is headlined by a featherweight tilt between Cub Swanson and Brian Ortega . The evening’s main card airs on Fox Sports 1. Saenz enters the bout on a three-fight losing streak after falling to Urijah Faber , Eddie Wineland and Augusto Mendes in succession. The 37-year-old Phoenix resident began his promotional tenure with three consecutive triumphs. He owns an 11-5 career mark. Dvalishvili will be making his UFC debut. The Serra-Longo Fight Team representative has competed for organizations such as Ring of Combat, CES MMA and Cage Fury Fighting Championships while compiling a 7-2 record. He last competed at ROC 59, knocking out Raufeon Stots with a spinning back fist 15 seconds into the opening stanza of their June 2 encounter.

Conor McGregor Opens as Favorite in Potential Bouts vs. Tony Ferguson, Nate Diaz

Conor McGregor ’s next move remains unclear, but the remaining lightweight champion would be a betting favorite against two possible UFC opponents. According to initial odds released by Bovada , McGregor would be a slight favorite (-165) against current interim 155-pound king Tony Ferguson , who is at +135. Ferguson defeated Kevin Lee via third-round submission to claim interim gold at UFC 216 and is currently riding a 10-fight winning streak. Meanwhile, McGregor is a bigger favorite (-250) against Nate Diaz (+200). The rivals split a pair of bouts at welterweight in 2016, with Diaz winning via second-round submission at UFC 196 and McGregor taking a majority decision at UFC 202. The Stockton, Calif., native hasn’t returned to the Octagon since UFC 202. All the aforementioned odds are subject to change over time, and either bout must occur by July 15, 2018 for the odds to be valid. McGregor hasn’t competed for the Las Vegas-based promotion since winning the lightweight crown against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 last November.

Derek Brunson Doesn't Buy Anybody's Excuse for Using Banned Substances Including Lyoto Machida | MMAWeekly.com

“Everybody will come out and say ‘I didn’t do this’ but it’s like OK let it play out, save face, whatever, but we all know somebody is going to try to take a supplement that masks something else and something else will show up,” Brunson told MMAWeekly ahead of the fight. “I’ve seen guys get short suspensions like Yoel [Romero], he got six months. He had a [performance enhancing drug] in his body but he came up with an excuse, saying it was in a supplement and wasn’t on the label, which is in my opinion easy to get that done.

Zach Freeman Envisions Granting Aaron Pico Rematch in Bellator MMA Title Bout

Even after shocking the world with his 24-second submission of the highly-touted Aaron Pico this past summer, Zach Freeman knows he still has a long way to go to earn the recognition he feels he truly deserves.   On the plus side, as he prepares to face Saad Awad at Bellator 186 on Nov. 3, Freeman has received some more interest from media than he did entering Bellator “NYC” as a relative unknown against Pico.   “I’m getting respect from the reporters. I did kind of call out MMA media after my fight and rightfully so. I got zero press. I walked out to an Aaron Pico video, which I was not happy about. I don’t know any other fighters that are walking out to their opponent’s videos. I didn’t appreciate that, but at the end of the day it should be expected. I hadn’t earned that notoriety yet and I still think I haven’t,” Freeman told Sherdog.com. “I have a lot of work to do before I can consider myself a well-known fighter. I’m sure I made a little bit of a name off Pico, but I don’t want to stop there. I don’t want to settle there.

Robbie Lawler Addresses PED Accusations from UFC 189 Foe Rory MacDonald

The welterweight championship bout between Robbie Lawler and Rory MacDonald ranks among the UFC’s all-time greatest fights. While Lawler emerged with a technical knockout victory 60 seconds into round five, there was plenty of back-and-forth action leading up to the finish that shattered MacDonald’s nose. In fact, MacDonald had Lawler reeling at one point, when he rocked “Ruthless’ with a head kick in the third and followed up with punches, standing elbows and knees. However, the violent nature of the bout only seemed to fuel Lawler, who glared at MacDonald and spit blood on the ground in a memorable scene at the conclusion of a brutal fourth stanza. Shortly after the fifth round began, a straight left from Lawler landed cleanly, forcing “The Red King” to essentially surrender due to the damage done to his nose. With that, Lawler vs. MacDonald instantly became an all-time classic. However, earlier this year during a Reddit AMA , MacDonald speculated that Lawler relied on performance enhancing drugs during a to boost his performance at UFC 189.

Coach: 'CM Punk' learned from 'real beating' in debut, motivated for 2nd UFC fight

“I think (a loss like Punk’s at UFC 203) will help a lot of fighters to the point of haunting them, like, ‘No, I don’t want to feel this way ever again,'” Roufus said. “It’s not the physical. It’s been great motivation for him.”

Georges St-Pierre blasts MMA's early weigh-in policy: 'It's the worst thing they could do'

“I think the new rule of doing the weigh-in earlier is bad because it makes the fighter cut more weight,” St-Pierre on Wednesday told MMAjunkie at a UFC 217 media day in Montreal. “They have more time for recuperation before the fight. I think it’s the worst thing they could do. It’s good for rehydration because you have more time, but if you know you have more time, you’ll cut more weight. I think it’s bad. I think it’s very bad.”

Firas Zahabi defends GSP from Bisping's steroid allegations – then compliments champ

Although he now says the French-Canadian is clean, Bisping (30-7 MMA, 20-7 UFC) has accused St-Pierre (25-2 MMA, 19-2 UFC) of using steroids prior to his four-year hiatus from the sport at every possible opportunity. The UFC middleweight champion said he’s heard “stories” that convinced him St-Pierre used to be a dirty fighter. But St-Pierre doesn’t seemed bothered and said he doesn’t think Bisping actually believes it.

Michael Bisping Pokes Holes in 'Little Sh-t' Georges St-Pierre's Record | BJPenn.com

That is some stiff competition to poke holes in, but Michael Bisping does it in a way that makes you believe him. All of that aside, one thing is for sure, Michael Bisping will be the biggest opponent Georges St-Pierre has ever fought. He’s bulked up too himself, but that doesn’t impress the UFC middleweight champion either. The two will both be walking into the Octagon at Madison Square Garden on November 4th to push their respective legacies to the next level. After that, there’ll be nothing more to question.
