Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Brunson vs. Machida’

Lyoto Machida in hindsight might have been better served staying on the sidelines. Derek Brunson put away the former Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight titleholder with punches in the first round of their UFC Fight Night 119 main event on Saturday at Geraldo Jose de Almeida Gymnasium in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In his first appearance since June 27, 2015, Machida checked out 2:30 into Round 1. He has not won a fight in 1,044 days. Neither man bucked conventional wisdom with his approach. Machida bounced in an out of range while searching for one of his patented precision counters, only to be countered himself. Brunson clipped “The Dragon” with a sweeping left hook, punched him to the canvas and then drew the curtain with violent ground-and-pound, his assault leaving no doubt that he was the better man. It was the 14th first-round finish of the Wilmington, North Carolina, native’s career and puts him in prime position to challenge one of the top contenders at 185 pounds. In the aftermath of UFC Fight Night “Brunson vs.

"I thought I'd be more relaxed in the ring like I had been in the gym," Gonzaga (1-0) said. "I did my best and came away with a victory. I was too safe in the third round. UFC Fight Night 119 Bonuses: Brunson, Munhoz, dos Santos, Griffin Garner $50K Checks

Derek Brunson ’s sixth knockout victory in the UFC might have been his most memorable. Brunson earned a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his stoppage of former light heavyweight champion and middleweight title challenger Lyoto Machida in the UFC Fight Night 119 main event in Sao Paulo on Saturday night. A counter left hand from Brunson put Machida on skates, and the North Carolina native landed a series of follow-up hammerfists on the mat to seal the victory at the 2:30 mark of the period. Elsewhere, Pedro Munhoz received the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” check for his first-round submission of Rob Font in a featured bantamweight matchup. A left hook from Munhoz rocked Font late in round one to set the stage for the finish. From there, Munhoz sprawled on a takedown, locked in a one-arm guillotine and rolled to mount to earn the tapout 4:03 into the stanza. Finally, Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos and Max Griffin collected “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their preliminary welterweight scrap.

By the Numbers: UFC Fight Night 119

Derek Brunson silenced the masses in Sao Paulo. A counter left hand over the top and a flurry of follow-up punches from the North Carolina native brought an unceremonious end to Lyoto Machida ’s Octagon return in the UFC Fight Night 119 “Machida vs. Brunson” headliner at Ibirapuera Gymnasium on Saturday night. Machida, who was competing for the first time since June 2015, has lost four of his last five UFC appearances. Meanwhile, Colby Covington lived up to his pre-fight boasts and battered former title challenger Demian Maia in the evening’s co-main event, winning a clear-cut unanimous decision. After using his defensive wrestling to thwart Maia’s renowned ground game, Covington trashed Brazil and called out reigning champ Tyron Woodley , who authored a somewhat similar performance against Maia in July. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night 119, with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com. UFC Fight Night 119 Prelims: Vicente Luque Brabo Choke Vanquishes Undefeated Niko Price

Significant Strikes. Significant Submission. Vicente Luque finishes the job with the win vs. Niko Price! #UFCSP https://t.co/Pt0hNRzUNn — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) October 29, 2017 Vicente Luque was first to solve the Niko Price riddle. A short-notice replacement for the injured Luan Chagas , “The Ultimate Fighter 21” semifinalist submitted Price with a brabo choke in the second round of their featured UFC Fight Night 119 “Machida vs. Brunson” prelim on Saturday at Geraldo Jose de Almeida Gymnasium in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Price (10-1, 2-1 UFC) bowed out 4:08 into Round 2. Luque (12-6-1, 5-2 UFC) compromised the American Top Team export’s base with hard kicks to the upper and lower leg. He turned up the heat in the second round, cut Price near the left eye and backed the Floridian to the fence. An overhand right buckled Price and left him vulnerable to a crippling body shot that came next. Luque locked up the brabo choke in the chaos that ensued, closed off avenues of escape and elicited the tapout. Related » UFC Fight Night 119 Round-by-Round Scoring Carlos Jr.

Ryan Bader: By the Numbers

The new surroundings seem to suit Ryan Bader just fine. “The Ultimate Fighter 8” winner and Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran will defend his Bellator MMA light heavyweight championship against Linton Vassell in the Bellator 186 main event on Friday at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pennsylvania. It marks Bader’s first appearance since he made his promotional debut at Bellator 180 on June 24 and eked out a split decision over Phil Davis to capture the 205-pound title. The Power MMA Team cornerstone enters the cage on a three-fight winning streak that has seen him best Davis, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Ilir Latifi in succession; only Davis went the distance. Long viewed as one of the sport’s premier light heavyweights, Bader sports 12 finishes among his 23 professional victories. As Bader prepares to risk his championship against the crafty Vassell, here are some of the numbers that have come to define him: .821: Career winning percentage. That includes Bader’s 15-5 mark in the UFC. 2: NCAA All-America selections at Arizona State University, where he was also a three-time Pac-10 Conference champion.

Opinion: Getting Ahead By Getting People Mad

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * First it was boos that rained down upon Colby Covington . Then it was booze. After his unanimous decision win over hometown-favorite Demian Maia in the UFC Fight Night 119 co-headliner on Saturday in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Covington proceeded to get on the microphone and call the host country “a dump” and the 10,000 Brazilians in attendance “filthy animals.” Derek Kronig was on translator duty for the event, but Daniel Cormier didn’t bother to pass him the microphone. Covington reveled in it: “We ain’t translating tonight, baby!” As he was rushed out of the arena by security, fans pelted him with cups of beer and whatever trash was within reach. Clearly, no translation was needed. Covington and his antics became the most talked-about part of the show, despite his fight with Maia being altogether forgettable. On paper, beating a top-five welterweight in his hometown is impressive, but the manner in which Covington won did not make anyone clamor to see him in a title fight.

Covington Calls for Title Shot, Says He Beat Maia ‘Way Worse’ Than Champ Woodley

What Colby Covington did to Demian Maia was not totally unlike what Tyron Woodley did to the Brazilian grappling ace some three months earlier. Only Covington believes his performance far surpassed the reigning welterweight king. Like Woodley, Covington used his wrestling to thwart Maia at every turn, as he stuffed 13 takedowns en route to a unanimous decision triumph in the UFC Fight Night 119 co-headliner in Sao Paulo on Saturday night. Woodley, meanwhile, defended all 21 Maia takedown tries to retain his 170-pound belt at UFC 214 in a largely lackluster bout. “Tyron Woodley, look what I did to Demian Maia in three rounds. I beat him way worse than Woodley could do in five rounds,” Covington said. “The only person I want to see in a contract in front of my face is Tyron Woodley. He´s been running from me, I have beat him in the gym before, I will finish him inside the Octagon.” Woodley and Covington have shared the gym at American Top Team in the past. According to the man known as “Chaos,” he forced the champ to quit in the middleweight of five-round sparring session on one occasion.

Raquel Pennington Injury Nixes Potential UFC 219 Title Bout Against Amanda Nunes

A proposed bantamweight title bout between Amanda Nunes and Raquel Pennington at UFC 219 won’t be happening — at least not until 2018. Both competitors had verbally agreed to the matchup, but Pennington suffered a leg injury in an ATV accident earlier this week and will not be able to fight on Dec. 30. Brazilian media outlet Combate was the first to report the news. The promotion had yet to formally announce the contest. UFC 219 takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and features several pivotal matchups including: Dominick Cruz vs. Jimmie Rivera ; Carlos Condit vs. Neil Magny and Edson Barboza vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov . Pennington told MMAFighting.com that she is expecting a three to four month recovery from the injuries suffered in the accident. “Rocky” has won four consecutive bouts in the Octagon, posting notable triumphs over the likes of Miesha Tate and Jessica Andrade during her run. After defending her bantamweight gold with a 48-second knockout of Ronda Rousey at UFC 207, Nunes made her second successful title defense at UFC 215, taking a narrow split decision over Valentina Shevchenko on Sept.

Coach Duke Roufus: CM Punk Learned from ‘Real Beating’ in UFC Debut

It appears that CM Punk could be booked for his second Octagon appearance in the very near future. “Dana and the matchmakers had their weekly matchmaking meeting [Wednesday], and you’re gonna hear some news soon I think,” Duke Roufus said during an interview on the UFC Unfiltered podcast posted Thursday. Roufus, who is Punk’s head trainer at Roufusport in Milwaukee, said that his fighter learned some valuable lessons from the his first UFC appearance. The former WWE star was taken down immediately, beaten up and submitted by Mickey Gall in the opening stanza of their bout at UFC 203. While Punk’s debut drew plenty of attention, the end result was to be expected for someone with minimal mixed martial arts experience. “….I just think the first time you’re in the Octagon there’s something special you’ve got to deal with getting in there. We’ve really rebounded,” Roufus said. “When you lose a fight it’s a blessing in disguise because now the ‘0’ is gone. You don’t have to worry about being invincible. A lot of questions get answered.

Why did Georges St-Pierre leave? Before UFC 217 return, GSP discusses self-imposed exile

“Georges St-Pierre was an all-time great UFC champion, an international superstar, with blue-chip sponsors and a budding film career, whose dominant run inside the Octagon showed no end in sight. Suddenly, in 2013, just entering his athletic prime, the man known to millions simply as “GSP” walked away from it all, relinquishing his title and retiring at the height of his powers. Now after nearly four years away, GSP returns to the sport he once ruled to challenge Michael Bisping for the UFC title, and to face the demons that drove him away. This film will explore the complex backstory and complicated personality of St-Pierre, whose experience as a youth tormented by bullies lead him to an obsessive pursuit of martial arts, and to ultimately becoming the best fighter on the planet. GSP tells us in his own words why he left, how he spent his self-imposed exile, and what to expect from the resurrection of GSP in November of this year.”

“How can I put a guy with these symptoms he said he’s experiencing immediately back in the Octagon without additional tests? I definitely wasn’t going to do that. ATT co-founder Ricardo Liborio condemns Colby Covington, announces departure from team

I feel that I must make a statement in light of the comments made by Colby Convigton along with the amount of messages sent to me from Brazil, the United States, and from all over the world. I'm here to state that I am no longer with American Top Team. Also, I absolutely do not condone any behavior that instigates hate, prejudice, or bullying of any kind. It upsets me to see the sport taking this direction of blatant disrespect. It’s unsportsmanlike, but it also fosters and promotes a culture of cruelty towards others. Combat Sports should always represent the qualities of humility, empathy, and respect. I dedicated my life to the Martial arts, and to the formation and growth of this team. I can not discuss at this time the reasons for my departure from ATT. At some point, I will. For the time being, I want the members of ATT to know that they will always be in my heart❤
