UFC champ Max Holloway faces Frankie Edgar in UFC 218 headliner

Meanwhile, Edgar stands at an impressive 7-1 in his past eight appearances, with the only loss in that run coming to Aldo. “The Answer” has since rebounded with wins over Yair Rodriguez and Jeremy Stephens. The former lightweight champ now looks to join Randy Couture, B.J. Penn and Conor McGregor as the only men to hold titles in two different weight classes.

Fabricio Werdum: 5 Defining Moments

It would be understandable if Fabricio Werdum shows a sense of urgency at this stage of his career. Now 40 years of age and 15 years deep into his exceptional run as a professional mixed martial artist, the two-time Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist and former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight titleholder will face Derrick Lewis in a featured UFC 216 showdown this Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Werdum needs a victory to stay in the discussion as a possible No. 1 contender in the division he once ruled. The Kings MMA export has lost twice in three appearances and last competed at UFC 213 on July 8, when he wound up on the wrong side of a majority decision against longtime rival Alistair Overeem . Notable wins over Travis Browne (twice), 2001 K-1 World Grand Prix winner Mark Hunt , former EliteXC champion Antonio Silva and onetime International Fight League titleholder Roy Nelson dot his outstanding resume. Ahead of Werdum’s three-round battle with Lewis, here are five moments that have come to define him: 1.

Ray Borg coach credits John Dodson as key player in prep for UFC champ Demetrious Johnson

“He’s gone in there and pushed Ray in the hard rounds,” Gibson told reporters at open workouts for Borg’s (11-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) fight against Johnson (26-2-1 MMA, 14-1-1 UFC) in the pay-per-view co-headliner at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. “Dodson’s one of those guys I think can show speed similar to Demetrious, with power behind it.

‘TUF 26’ Recap: Episode 6

While the score is nearly even between Team Alvarez and Team Gaethje heading into the sixth episode of “The Ultimate Fighter 26,” the winners thus far have not exactly advanced according to seeding. No. 1 seed Roxanne Modafferi , No. 4 seed DeAnna Bennett and No. 6 seed Montana Stewart moved passed their opponents with relative ease, but No. 12 seed Sijara Eubanks and No. 14 seed Nicco Montano turned the tournament upside down; Montano defeated No. 3 seed Lauren Murphy and Eubanks took out No. 5 seed Maia Stevenson. In the latest episode, the 15th-seeded Gillian Robertson was given the opportunity to author the biggest upset of the season against No. 2 seed Barb Honchak . Episode 6 opened with Team Alvarez running strength and conditioning drills with assistant coach Rick Pohler. Former Ultimate Fighting Championship and Bellator MMA lightweight titleholder Eddie Alvarez credited the drills for helping him endure some of the toughest battles of his career. Speaking of battles: Alvarez continued to have issues with Murphy. While the final cut of a reality show can be slanted and crafted in any manner the producers see fit, Murphy either does not get along with her coach or just happens to give editors perfect ammunition to paint her character.

Demetrious Johnson Believes Pettis-Cejudo Winner at UFC 218 is Flyweight No. 1 Contender

Demetrious Johnson doesn’t plan on putting in a full night’s work against Ray Borg in order to break the record for most successful title defenses at UFC 216 on Saturday. “I’m going for a finish. I’ve worked way too hard for these last 12 weeks to have it go to the judges,” Johnson said on the UFC “Unfiltered” podcast . “I predict four rounds. I give myself four rounds.” The flyweight title bout was delayed approximately one month when Borg pulled out of previous bout against Johnson — scheduled to headlined UFC 215 — a few days prior to the event due to illness. Still, that hasn’t dampened Johnson’s enthusiasm to potentially set a record. “Mighty Mouse’s” 10 flyweight title defenses currently ties him with Anderson Silva for the most in the history of the Las Vegas-based promotion. “Nobody’s ever set this record before. Why not try to get this record with all the history? A lot of people just overlook all the good things and all the hard work people do,” Johnson said. “This is a good accomplishment for my career and I’m looking forward to going out there and capturing it.

In the wake of this tragedy, the UFC, which is donating $1 million to affected families, is carrying on with the first major sporting event scheduled in this city. The Must-See Fights of Bellator 184

Darrion Caldwell was viewed as a champion in waiting when he signed with Bellator MMA in 2014, and he has done little to alter that line of thinking in the three-plus years that have followed. Caldwell will challenge Eduardo Dantas for the bantamweight crown in the Bellator 184 main event this Friday at the Winstar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma. Their five-round battle serves as the centerpiece for a lineup that features three current or former champions, perennial contenders and a number of high-level prospects. Before he transitioned to mixed martial arts, Caldwell was a two-time NCAA All-American wrestler at North Carolina State University, where he became a three-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion and won a national title in 2009. The Rahway, New Jersey, native still ranks second on the Wolfpack’s all-time list in career wins (109) and pins (58) and third in winning percentage (.893). Caldwell made his professional MMA debut in 2012 and won his first nine bouts before bowing to a Joe Taimanglo guillotine choke in a stunning upset at Bellator 159; he has since avenged the defeat.

Opinion: The Missed Opportunities of UFC 216

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday returns to Las Vegas for UFC 216 . Unlike previous cards with two title fights, this one seems to have little hype surrounding it. Recent promotional muscle has gone toward the Floyd Mayweather Jr.- Conor McGregor boxing blockbuster and the forthcoming return of Georges St. Pierre , which highlights UFC 217 in November. As a result, the events in between have been lost in the shuffle. Considering the potential marketing goldmines present at UFC 216, it’s unfortunate so little has been done to draw attention to the card. Never mind the fact that flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson was rebooked for the co-main event slot and can break Anderson Silva ’s title defense record with a win against Ray Borg . UFC 216 also features two of MMA’s most charismatic and entertaining personalities: Kevin Lee and Derrick Lewis .

Kevin Lee: Tony Ferguson Could Have Lost a Lot of Fights During Current Win Streak

Tony Ferguson is a man who doesn’t lack for confidence. That bravado is rooted in merit, as “El Cucuy” enters his interim lightweight championship bout with Kevin Lee in the UFC 216 headliner on Saturday on a nine-fight winning streak. However, Lee isn’t as impressed. “The Motown Phenom,” who enters the matchup on a five-fight winning streak of his own, believes Ferguson has been walking a tightrope in some of his Octagon appearances. “Tony is super aggressive. That’s kind of what he relies on. Even though you say he’s won [nine] fights in a row, I look at a lot of them and say, he could have lost a lot of those,” Lee said on the UFC “Unfiltered” podcast . “He was getting getting his ass whooped by [ Abel Trujillo ], he was getting his ass whooped by [Rafael] dos Anjos….I do give Tony a whole lot of respect. “He’s talking about training like a caveman. There’s a reason why cavemen are extinct, they don’t last too long. I don’t think he’s filled the holes in his game. I’m gonna go out there and show those holes. “ Ferguson owns notable victories over the likes of dos Anjos, Edson Barboza , Josh Thomson and Gleison Tibau , to name a few.

Once with nothing but 'a backpack full of dreams,' Poliana Botelho eager to make UFC debut

“It’s very serious to me and, in some ways, a lot more important [than MMA] based on where I come from,” Baszler said. “Waving the banner of my coaches is a heavy flag to wield, so it’s something I take very serious. I didn’t get any ‘gimmes.’”

Kevin Lee: Champ Conor McGregor has lost 3 of 4, got 'outwrestled' by 40-year-old boxer

“He’s a small dude, too, (having fought at) 145,” Lee said. “He was getting outwrestled by a dude that’s 40 years old and a boxer. (Mayweather) was beating him in the clinches and outwrestling him. You’ve got to show a little bit more than that to me. So after this one, maybe I might give him a shot at the title. Maybe. I don’t know. We’ll see how he kind of reacts. Maybe he should fight Nate again and prove that he can beat a top fighter.”

What happens when you pay a fighter to retire? What happens when you stop?

Still, for a time this system worked. It offered a solution to a problem. Pro fighters are notorious for not knowing when to quit. While promoters can refuse to give them any more fights, they can’t stop a competitor from stepping up with an offer to fill the void. If you care enough about an aging fighter’s health or legacy – or you just want to keep him out of the hands of another promoter – paying him to do nothing is an effective strategy.

Conor McGregor Posts Heartfelt Statement Following Las Vegas Shooting |

Las Vegas has become a second home to McGregor. The UFC lightweight champion has fought half of his UFC bouts in the city and also fought Floyd Mayweather there in his lone professional boxing bout. McGregor sets up camp for weeks on end in Las Vegas prior to his fights there. He is very familiar with the city and its people, so Sunday’s events hit close to his heart.

Michael Bisping Takes Back GSP Steroid Allegations: ‘I Was Just Trying to Irritate Him’

Michael Bisping took a break from pre-fight trash talk for a rare moment of sincerity during an appearance on “Conan” Wednesday night. In March, the UFC announced that former welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre would be returning to face Bisping for the middleweight title at an event in the summer. However, St. Pierre asked for the fight to be pushed back so that he could recover from an eye injury . Now, Bisping and St. Pierre will headline UFC 217 at Madison Square Garden in New York on Nov. 4. That prompted Bisping to speculate that his opponent delayed the contest so that he wouldn’t fail the USADA drug testing required by the UFC. For the most part, “The Count” took back those remarks when talking to host Conan O’Brien. Still, the outspoken Brit couldn’t resist throwing a few more jabs at St. Pierre. “OK, so I alluded possibly that he was trying to get the steroids out of his system. But honestly I don’t think it’s that,” Bisping said. “I don’t want to publicly say that [he’s on steroids]. He’s coming up a weight class from welterweight to middleweight to fight me, so I was saying that he’s doing lots of weights to get bigger.
