Tony Ferguson Triangles Kevin Lee at UFC 216; Demetrious Johnson Armbar Steals Show
Your move, Conor
McGregor .
“The Ultimate Fighter 13” winner Tony
Ferguson laid claim to the interim Ultimate Fighting
Championship lightweight title, as he submitted Kevin Lee with
a triangle choke in the third round of their UFC
216 headliner on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Lee
(16-3, 9-3 UFC) conceded defeat 4:02 into Round 3, his five-fight
winning streak having run its course.
Ferguson (23-3, 13-1 UFC) now awaits word from McGregor, who has
not appeared inside the Octagon since he defeated Eddie
Alvarez for the undisputed lightweight crown in November.
Lee pushed “El Cucuy” to the limit in the first round, where he
delivered a takedown, climbed to mount and unleashed a torrent of
punches and elbows. The barrage might have finished a lesser man.
Ferguson shrugged. Lee’s pace slowed noticeably in the second, and
he continued to deteriorate physically in the third. There, he
executed two takedowns but lacked the energy to consolidate them
with damage. Ferguson nearly tapped him with an armbar before
catching the triangle and eliciting the tapout.

Bobby Green
vs. Lando
Vannata
Round 1
Green sticks a jab with his first punch of the fight, then denies
Vannata's early attempt to tie up. Vannata gets inside behind a
right hand, but Green pushes him away again. Green scores with a
left hook in an exchange, gets a body shot in return, and now it's
Green looking for the clinch on the fence. Vannata breaks out of
the clinch and nearly lands a head kick. Seconds later, a body shot
stings Green, and Vannata puts the hurt on him with a right hand
behind the ear. Green looks finished as Vannata pounds on him, but
referee Herb Dean is in a poor position to see Green's condition.
Green comes to and gets to his knees, and Vannata drills his
still-downed opponent with a knee to the face. Referee Dean calls
the doctor into the cage to check on Green, who says he's good to
continue. Vannata is docked one point for the foul. The fight
resumes with a takedown from Green, who gets snared in a guillotine
as he drives Vannata to the canvas. Vannata keeps hold of the choke
as the lightweights stand back up and fight to the fence. Green
pulls his head free with 1:45 on the clock, changes levels and

Darrion Caldwell Unseats Eduardo Dantas, Takes Bantamweight Belt in Bellator 184 Headliner
Darrion
Caldwell fought his fight.
The onetime NCAA wrestling champion became the fifth bantamweight
titleholder in Bellator
MMA history, as he laid claim to a unanimous decision over
Eduardo
Dantas in the
Bellator 184 headliner on Friday at the Winstar World Casino in
Thackerville, Oklahoma. All three cageside judges scored it for
Caldwell (11-1, 8-1 Bellator MMA): 48-47, 48-47 and 50-45.
Dantas (20-5, 10-2 Bellator MMA) enjoyed success in bursts -- he
mounted the Alliance MMA rep in the third round and fished for a
rear-naked choke in the fourth -- but they were few and far
between. Caldwell repeatedly pinned him to the fence, killing
valuable time and momentum amid building frustration. He executed a
belly-to-back suplex in the first round, dropped Dantas to a knee
with a standing elbow in the second and opened a cut near his left
eye with some ground-and-pound in the fourth. Needing a finish,
Dantas failed in his bid to turn the tide in Round 5.
The loss snapped a four-fight winning streak for Dantas.
In the featherweight co-main event,
Roufusport ’s Emmanuel
Sanchez secured his signature victory and submitted two-time
champion Daniel
Straus with a third-round triangle choke.

UFC 216 Bonuses: Johnson, Vannata, Green, Moraga Garner $50K Awards
They’re going to be talking about Demetrious
Johnson ’s submission of Ray Borg for
quite some time.
“Mighty Mouse” received a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus
for his record-breaking victory over Borg in the UFC 216
co-main event on Saturday night — and he authored a serious
“Submission of the Year” candidate in the process. With time
winding down in the fifth frame, Johnson executed a belly-to-back
suplex, released Borg in midair and transitioned to an armbar to
earn a tapout 3:15 into the period.
Elsewhere, Lando
Vannata and Bobby Green
earned “Fight of Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their wild
lightweight scrap. Vannata appeared to be on the verge of a finish
in the opening stanza, but Green was able to recover after the
Jackson-Wink product was deducted a point for an illegal knee. For
the final two rounds, the two combatants went back-and-forth,
ultimately battling to a majority draw.
Finally, John Moraga
pocketed the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night”
award for his first-round knockout of Russian prospect Magomed
Bibulatov .

Matches to Make After UFC 216
The superlatives in relation to Demetrious
Johnson have long since been exhausted.
“Mighty Mouse” retained the Ultimate Fighting Championship
flyweight title by submitting Ray Borg with a
spectacular fifth-round armbar in the UFC
216 co-main event on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena. Victimized in
one of the great finishes in UFC history and the clear frontrunner
for “Submission of the Year,” Borg yielded to the record-setting
champion 3:05 into Round 5.
In what may have been his most dominant performance to date,
Johnson stuffed the stat sheet at the expense of his young
challenger. According to preliminary FightMetric data, he outlanded
Borg by an almost unfathomable 172-22 margin in total strikes, went
8-for-8 on takedowns and executed a career-high 19 guard passes.
The two flyweights combined to land 54 significant strikes in the
first three rounds; Johnson accounted for 49 of them. This does not
even mention the rear waistlock slam to armbar transition with
which he seamlessly finished Borg.
With the victory, Johnson surpasses former middleweight champion
Anderson
Silva ’s all-time record for consecutive UFC title defenses.

Julia
Budd will defend her featherweight title for the first time
against Arlene
Blencowe in the
Bellator 189 headliner on Dec. 1.
Promotion officials announced the pairing on Friday night. Bellator
189 takes place at Winstar World Casino and Resort in Thackerville,
Okla., and will also see Chris
Honeycutt face Rafael
Lovato Jr. in the middleweight co-main event. The card will air
on Spike at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT, with prelims streaming immediately
prior on Bellator.com and the Bellator Mobile App.
Budd and Blencowe initially squared off at Bellator 162, where Budd
captured a majority decision. The Strikeforce veteran then captured
the inaugural 145-pound belt with a fourth-round technical knockout
triumph against Marloes
Coenen at Bellator 174 on March 3 for her eighth consecutive
victory.
After losing to Budd, Blencowe has won three straight fights. Most
recently, the 34-year-old Australian took a split verdict over
Sinead
Kavanagh at Bellator 182 on April 25. “Angerfist” is 10-6 as a
professional overall, including a 3-2 mark under the Bellator MMA
banner.
