Tony Ferguson: By The Numbers

Tony Ferguson has nothing left to accomplish as a contender. “The Ultimate Fighter 13” winner will take on Xtreme Couture ’s Kevin Lee for the interim Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight title in the UFC 216 main event this Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The man who emerges with his hand raised figures to be in line for a blockbuster unification bout with undisputed champion Conor McGregor , provided the “Notorious” Irishman does not decide to take another detour away from mixed martial arts. Ferguson has compiled a stellar 12-1 record since he joined the UFC roster a little more than six years ago, establishing himself as one of the world’s premier lightweights and one of the sport’s most exciting competitors. “El Cucuy” last competed at UFC Fight Night 98 on Nov. 5, when he captured a five-round unanimous decision from former champion Rafael dos Anjos in what was arguably the most significant victory of his career. As he barrels ahead toward his high-stakes showdown with Lee, here are some of the numbers that have come to define Ferguson: 5.

'King Mo' Lawal out of Bellator 185 co-headliner against Liam McGeary

Lawal (21-6 MMA, 10-4 BMMA) has been forced to pull out of his light-heavyweight matchup with McGeary (12-2 MMA, 9-2 BMMA) at Bellator 185 due to an undisclosed injury, a Bellator official today told MMAjunkie. The organization is seeking a replacement to step in for “King Mo.”

Matches to Make After Bellator 184

Darrion Caldwell found his way to Bellator MMA ’s pantheon of champions, just as many predicted he would when he joined the organization as an undefeated prospect in March 2014. “The Wolf” completed his rise to the top of the 135-pound weight class, as he captured the bantamweight crown with a five-round unanimous decision over Eduardo Dantas in the Bellator 184 main event on Friday at the Winstar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma. Scores were 48-47, 48-47 and 50-45, the win putting even more distance between Caldwell and his surprising submission defeat to Joe Taimanglo a little more than a year ago. Dantas was never afforded the breathing room he needed. Caldwell bottled up the Brazilian against the cage, running through various clinches that chewed up clock, minimized risk and kept momentum in his corner. He delivered a crowd-pleasing suplex in the first round, dropped Dantas to a knee with a standing elbow strike in the second and drew blood with ground-and-pound in the fourth. It was more than enough to overshadow the Nova Uniao standout’s work.

Tony Ferguson Triangles Kevin Lee at UFC 216; Demetrious Johnson Armbar Steals Show

Your move, Conor McGregor . “The Ultimate Fighter 13” winner Tony Ferguson laid claim to the interim Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight title, as he submitted Kevin Lee with a triangle choke in the third round of their UFC 216 headliner on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Lee (16-3, 9-3 UFC) conceded defeat 4:02 into Round 3, his five-fight winning streak having run its course. Ferguson (23-3, 13-1 UFC) now awaits word from McGregor, who has not appeared inside the Octagon since he defeated Eddie Alvarez for the undisputed lightweight crown in November. Lee pushed “El Cucuy” to the limit in the first round, where he delivered a takedown, climbed to mount and unleashed a torrent of punches and elbows. The barrage might have finished a lesser man. Ferguson shrugged. Lee’s pace slowed noticeably in the second, and he continued to deteriorate physically in the third. There, he executed two takedowns but lacked the energy to consolidate them with damage. Ferguson nearly tapped him with an armbar before catching the triangle and eliciting the tapout.

Darrion Caldwell Unseats Eduardo Dantas, Takes Bantamweight Belt in Bellator 184 Headliner

Darrion Caldwell fought his fight. The onetime NCAA wrestling champion became the fifth bantamweight titleholder in Bellator MMA history, as he laid claim to a unanimous decision over Eduardo Dantas in the Bellator 184 headliner on Friday at the Winstar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma. All three cageside judges scored it for Caldwell (11-1, 8-1 Bellator MMA): 48-47, 48-47 and 50-45. Dantas (20-5, 10-2 Bellator MMA) enjoyed success in bursts -- he mounted the Alliance MMA rep in the third round and fished for a rear-naked choke in the fourth -- but they were few and far between. Caldwell repeatedly pinned him to the fence, killing valuable time and momentum amid building frustration. He executed a belly-to-back suplex in the first round, dropped Dantas to a knee with a standing elbow in the second and opened a cut near his left eye with some ground-and-pound in the fourth. Needing a finish, Dantas failed in his bid to turn the tide in Round 5. The loss snapped a four-fight winning streak for Dantas. In the featherweight co-main event, Roufusport ’s Emmanuel Sanchez secured his signature victory and submitted two-time champion Daniel Straus with a third-round triangle choke.

This Month’s MMA Birthdays: Frankie Edgar Turns 36

Still going strong well into his 30s, Frankie Edgar has a well-established reputation as one of MMA’s most durable and consistent competitors. The man they call “The Answer” will celebrate his 36th birthday on Oct. 16. One of nine fighters who have captured the undisputed Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight crown, Edgar held the title for 687 days -- the second-longest reign at 155 pounds in the history of the promotion. The New Jersey native has compiled a stellar 16-5-1 record in the UFC, including wins over B.J. Penn (three), Sean Sherk , Gray Maynard , Charles Oliveira , Cub Swanson , Urijah Faber , Chad Mendes and Jeremy Stephens . A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under former Pancrase champion Ricardo Almeida , Edgar has never been finished in his 28-fight career. He last competed at UFC 211 on May 13, when he scored a second-round technical knockout against highly regarded prospect Yair Rodriguez , the victory putting him on a short list of potential suitors for current featherweight champion Max Holloway .

10 October Tussles Worth Watching

In an effort to bring more attention to the global stage of mixed martial arts, this list does not focus on major North American-based promotions like the Ultimate Fighting Championship and Bellator MMA. *** A familiar face awaits Mateusz Gamrot in his bid to remain on the Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki throne at 155 pounds. The undefeated Pole will put his perfect 13-0 record and lightweight championship on the line in a rematch with Norman Parke in the KSW 40 co-main event on Oct. 22 at 3Arena in Dublin. This serves as a follow-up to their KSW 39 encounter in May, which resulted in a unanimous decision for Gamrot before 57,776 fans in Warsaw, Poland. The 26-year-old remains one of the bright young stars in the European sky, with other notable victories against Mansour Barnaoui , Marif Piraev and Andre Winner . The loss to Gamrot snapped a modest two-fight winning streak for Parke, a judo black belt who has gone the distance in 11 of his past 12 bouts. “The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes” winner compiled a 5-3-1 record under the Ultimate Fighting Championship flag before parting ways with the promotion following a February 2016 defeat to Rustam Khabilov .

Tony Ferguson Issues Challenge to Conor McGregor: ‘Defend or Vacate, Motherf—-er’

Tony Ferguson didn’t mince words after winning the interim lightweight crown at UFC 216 on Saturday night. With his new hardware in tow, “El Cucuy” set his sights directly on Conor McGregor , who has yet to defend the 155-pound belt he won against Eddie Alvarez last November at UFC 205. “Where you at McNuggets, ya f—-ing piece of s—t,” Ferguson said in the Octagon. “I’m gonna kick your ass. You better come and f—-ing defend that belt. Defend or vacate, motherf—-er.” Well that escalated quickly ....@TonyFergusonXT #UFC216 — UFC (@ufc) October 8, 2017 While McGregor’s next move remains unknown after he earned a massive payday for boxing Floyd Mayweather in August, Ferguson has undoubtedly established himself as one of the best lightweights in the world. His third-round submission of Kevin Lee with a triangle choke from his back — just the second such maneuver performed in a UFC title bout — gave Ferguson his 10th consecutive triumph. “The Ultimate Fighter 13” winner dropped the opening round to Lee, but appeared to grow stronger as “The Motown Phenom” faded.

UFC 216 Bonuses: Johnson, Vannata, Green, Moraga Garner $50K Awards

They’re going to be talking about Demetrious Johnson ’s submission of Ray Borg for quite some time. “Mighty Mouse” received a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his record-breaking victory over Borg in the UFC 216 co-main event on Saturday night — and he authored a serious “Submission of the Year” candidate in the process. With time winding down in the fifth frame, Johnson executed a belly-to-back suplex, released Borg in midair and transitioned to an armbar to earn a tapout 3:15 into the period. Elsewhere, Lando Vannata and Bobby Green earned “Fight of Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their wild lightweight scrap. Vannata appeared to be on the verge of a finish in the opening stanza, but Green was able to recover after the Jackson-Wink product was deducted a point for an illegal knee. For the final two rounds, the two combatants went back-and-forth, ultimately battling to a majority draw. Finally, John Moraga pocketed the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for his first-round knockout of Russian prospect Magomed Bibulatov .

UFC Middleweight Champ Michael Bisping To Appear on ‘Conan’ This Wednesday

Ahead of his next Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight title defense, Michael Bisping is getting the star treatment, or at least a very specific kind of star treatment: the Team Coco treatment. This coming Wednesday, Bisping will appear on “Conan” with host Conan O'Brien. With his appearance, “The Count” joins the likes of UFC lightweight champ Conor McGregor , former bantamweight queen Ronda Rousey and Nate Diaz . Bisping, 38, will make the second defense of his 185-pound crown against returning welterweight legend Georges St. Pierre at UFC 217 on Nov. 4 from Madison Square Garden. UFC Middleweight Rafael ‘Sapo’ Natal Announces Retirement After 12-Year MMA Career

Rafael “Sapo” Natal is hanging up his gloves. On Monday's edition of “The MMA Hour” with Ariel Helwani, Natal made an in-studio appearance in New York City to announce his retirement from mixed martial arts after over 12 years as a professional, spending the last seven as a middleweight fixture in the Ultimate Fighting Championship . The 34-year-old retires with a pro MMA record of 21-9-1. “It was the toughest walk in today to your studio because it is hard to make this announcement,” Natal told Helwani, “but I talked to my family, my friends, my coaches. That is the time. I have new focus in my career as a coach, so that’s the thing to do in the moment.” After starting his career 10-1 and winning the Ring of Combat middleweight title, Natal got his breakout win at Moosin's ill-fated “God of Martial Arts” pay-per-view in May 2010, knocking out “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 4 winner Travis Lutter . He debuted in the UFC five months later, losing a unanimous decision to Rich Attonito at UFC Fight Nigtht 22. He would go on to post a 9-7-1 mark in the Octagon, taking wins over the likes of Paul Bradley , Chris Camozzi , Uriah Hall and Tom Watson The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt has lost his last three bouts in the UFC.

Though he faced a rocky start to his UFC tenure, Natal went on to amass an overall record of 21-9-1. He fought under the UFC banner from 2010 until his retirement, always edging close to a middleweight title shot, but never getting his crack at the belt.

Opinion: A Source of Pride

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * There is a story behind every journey into the Octagon, and every story invariably includes adversity and heartache -- almost certainly to a much greater degree than triumph. Success is built on a mountain of Ls, and in order to suffer through those losses and keep trudging onward, there must be an aquifer of personal pride somewhere beneath the bedrock of whatever other motivation propels fighters forward. Though nebulous and amorphous, pride is an essential piece of the fight game. There was no shortage of it at UFC 216 on Saturday in Las Vegas, especially at the top of the card. It was no secret that Ray Borg had an uphill battle against Demetrious Johnson in the main event. At +900 leading up to the fight, he was the biggest underdog on the card -- and deservedly so. Borg is seven years younger than Johnson and likely years away from his prime.

UFC Moves On From Anheuser-Busch; Modelo Especial to Become UFC's Official Beer in 2018

This Bud isn’t for the Ultimate Fighting Championship any more. The UFC has reached a multiyear deal with Modelo Especial which will make the Mexican import the Octagon’s official beer and malt beverage starting in 2018. The partnership was announced on Monday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. “Modelo is an amazing brand that shares UFC's unmatched commitment to its fan base,” UFC President Dana White told The Associated Press . “I love Modelo and we're already talking about doing a lot of exciting things together.” The fight promotion signed a sponsorship deal with Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. nearly a decade ago. In February 2008, the two companies announced their partnership, making Bud Light the official beer of both the UFC and then-active World Extreme Cagefighting brands. After the initial three-year contract, the UFC and Anheuser-Busch extended their deal in April 2011. “When Bud signed on to be our sponsor, it sent a significant message that UFC was a real player in the sports landscape,” said UFC Chief Operating Officer Ike Lawrence Epstein said.

‘Mighty Mouse’ on Spectacular Submission: ‘I’ve Been Doing That for a Long Time in the Gym’

While Demetrious Johnson ’s mid-air release suplex to armbar submission of Ray Borg was a novelty to most anyone watching UFC 216 , for “Mighty Mouse” it was almost routine. “I looked for that suplex to armbar. I’ve been doing that for a long time in the gym. I’ve kind of mastered that submission and no one has ever done it,” Johnson said. [AMC Pankration Coach] Matt [Hume] is always telling me to hit it and I had it, my energy was full, and I was like ‘Here we go.’ I’m just happy I was able to do it.” Added Borg, “I don’t even think it was really a submission. Sometimes you just make s—t up.” Prior to his spectacular finish, which will likely top many “Submission of the Year” lists for 2017, Johnson was clinical in his domination of Borg. Johnson outlanded his foe 172 to 22 in total strikes, went 8-for-8 on takedowns and passed guard 19 times. The 24-year-old Jackson-Wink MMA product rarely had any moments of daylight in the co-main event bout. “I laughed at him a couple times during the fight, because he did some sneaky s—t,” Borg said.

On Oct. 2, Bellator MMA announced that Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal had withdrawn from his scheduled bout with former promotional light heavyweight champion Liam McGeary due to a knee injury. Dana White: Jason Aldean Snubbed UFC 216, Vegas Shooting Survivors for ‘SNL’ Gig

At UFC 216 on Saturday night, Everlast sang “America the Beautiful” to open the pay-per-view portion of the event but that wasn’t the original plan. According to UFC President Dana White, the Grammy Award-winning artist was chosen to perform because originally desired performer Jason Aldean, as well as several other country musicians, turned down the opportunity. "His image was more important then coming back to Vegas and playing for the people who are his fans and who got shot watching him play," White told TMZ . On Oct. 1, a mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest festival in Las Vegas left 59 dead and at least 527 injured. When the attack began on the country music festival, it was Aldean on stage. White says that the UFC reached out to Aldean for him to perform at the event, which was dedicated to the memory of those who died in the attack and featured 1500 first responders and 15 survivors in the crowd at T-Mobile Arena. Instead, Aldean performed on Saturday Night Live on the evening. “F—- you Jason Aldean. Stay out of Vegas,” added White.
