UFC Fight Night 120 ‘Poirier vs. Pettis’ Play-by-Play, Results & Round-by-Round Scoring

Jake Collier vs. Marcel Fortuna Round 1 Collier opens with a pair of low kicks but gets touched with a jab from the Brazilian in an early exchange. Another punch from Fortuna backs up Collier, but this time the American scores a left hook counter on his way back. Collier slips to the mat but jumps back to his feet before Fortuna can capitalize. Fortuna is pressuring with big, lunging combinations, hurling uppercuts and hooks at the wrestler. Collier walks into the pocket with his hands down and eats a stiff jab. The next jab catches Collier rushing forward and knocks him to the ground, though it looks like a partial slip. Fortuna is mixing up his punches to the body and head now, but Collier regains some ground with a left hook, followed by a spinning body kick that gets Fortuna backing up. Fortuna shoots for a double, gets stood up and spins to take Collier's back on the feet. Collier moves over to the fence, peels away Fortuna's hands and escapes with 2:00 on the clock. A big overhand left from Collier appears to stagger Fortuna, but he regains his footing. It's Collier pressing the action here in the second half of the round, and now he catches Fortuna with a spinning kick and another hard left hand.

5 Things You Might Not Know About John Dodson

John Dodson has begun to inch toward title contention in the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s tumultuous bantamweight division. Having gone 2-1 since he returned to 135 pounds in 2016, Dodson will confront former World Series of Fighting champion Marlon Moraes in the featured UFC Fight Night 120 prelim on Saturday at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Virginia. “The Magician” last competed at UFC Fight Night “Swanson vs. Lobov” in April, when he took a three-round unanimous decision from a resurgent Eddie Wineland . Dodson has compiled an 8-3 record under the UFC flag, with two of those losses coming to reigning flyweight champion and pound-for-pound ace Demetrious Johnson . Operating out of the famed Jackson-Wink MMA academy in his native Albuquerque, New Mexico, he has delivered more than half (11) of his 19 career victories by knockout, technical knockout or submission. As Dodson approaches his pivotal clash with Moraes, here are five things you might not know about him: 1. Despite his strong strength of schedule, durability has never been an issue.

Bellator HW Tourney Set for 2018; Fedor, Mir, Bader, Sonnen Among Those in Bracket

The tournament format is alive and well in Bellator MMA. The California-based promotion revealed on Friday that it will crown a new heavyweight champion in 2018 through an eight-man bracket. Sherdog.com confirmed the news with a Bellator official following an initial report from MMAjunkie.com . The tournament bouts will take place at seven different Bellator events throughout next year, with the final tentatively scheduled for December 2018. The winner of the Bellator MMA World Grand Prix 2018 will receive the vacant heavyweight crown. Bellator has not held a heavyweight championship bout since Vitaly Minakov defended the crown with a five-round verdict against Cheick Kongo in April 2014. The promotion stripped Minakvo of the belt in 2016. “This is going to be something that’s iconic for us,” Bellator President Scott Coker told MMAjunkie. “Tournaments, traditionally, are kind of the way martial arts contests happen. Now we get to put eight iconic brand names in our sport together over a year, and then whoever wins will be crowned the heavyweight champion.

Marlon Moraes Out-Hustles John Dodson at UFC Norfolk | MMAWeekly.com

Moraes took scores of 30-27 on two of the judges’ scorecards, while Dodson also got a 30-27 nod, but only from one judge. The split decision fell in Moraes’ favor and he took the moment he had on the mic to call out Jimmie Rivera, who is without an opponent for UFC 219 on Dec. 30, after Dominick Cruz fell out of the fight due to injury.

UFC-Norfolk staff picks: In close fight, who has edge between Anthony Pettis, Dustin Poirier?

Bantamweight standout Raphael Assuncao (25-5 MMA, 9-2 UFC) is more than a 3-1 favorite and is a 9-1 pick over Matthew Lopez (10-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC). And to open the main card, a lightweight fight between Clay Guida (33-17 MMA, 13-11 UFC) and Joe Lauzon (27-13 MMA, 14-10 UFC) features 24 fight-night bonuses between the two. It’s the closest fight on the card from an odds standpoint, and it’s the closest fight in our picks: Lauzon has just a 6-4 edge.

Coach: GSP Struggled with Middleweight Move, Dealt with Severe Stomach Pains, Vomiting

Experiment with mixed results: The victory by Welterweight Georges St-Pierre at middleweight to gain a new world title was a bold experiment with a truly great result, but was not without its problems. The fundamental problem was always going to be size. Mr St-Pierre always walked into the octagon around 189 pounds on fight night throughout his career. This made him a very averaged sized Welterweight. In order to move up to middle weight, Mr St-Pierre took on a nutritional program designed to facilitate weight gain and hold weight during the rigors of a full fight camp. The result was a disaster. Two weeks into camp he developed severe stomach pains and vomiting. Initially it was suspected that he had an illness, but all tests came back negative. The situation deteriorated to the point that for two weeks of a six week camp there was no training at all. At a critical point we gave him a two day window to either get back in the gym or call off the fight. The first grappling workout he had he vomited heavily prior to workout and then went to work. The next day he had the worst standing sparring session I have ever seen him have.

10 reasons to watch UFC-Norfolk, and hey, have you really seen this card's depth?

That’s not to say this welterweight matchup is going to be a snoozer. Fans are almost guaranteed a slobberknocker, but with Brown’s record at 1-5 in his six most recent bouts and Sanchez 3-3 in his past six, it feels like this fight would have been more fun had it come a little sooner.

Michael Johnson Drops to Featherweight, Meets Darren Elkins at UFC Fight Night 124

Longtime lightweight contender Michael Johnson will make his 145-pound debut when he faces Darren Elkins at UFC Fight Night 124. Johnson announced the pairing via Instagram on Thursday. Combate was first to report the matchup. UFC Fight Night 124 takes place at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis on Jan. 14 and airs on FS1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass. The 31-year-old Johnson has lost four of his last five bouts, albeit against top-level competition. Most recently, “The Menace” engaged in a 2017 “Fight of the Year” candidate in a second-round TKO defeat to Justin Gaethje at “The Ultimate Fighter 25” finale on July 7. Johnson has also lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov , Beneil Dariush and Nate Diaz during his current slump, with his lone victory coming over Dustin Poirier in September 2016. Elkins has quietly established himself as one of the featherweight division’s most consistent performers during a five-bout winning streak. “The Damage” authored a memorable 2017 campaign, coming from behind for a third-round knockout of prospect Mirsad Bektic at UFC 209 before garnering a split verdict over Dennis Bermudez at UFC on Fox 25.
