Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Poirier vs. Pettis’

Bathed in the blood of a vanquished opponent, Dustin Poirier did not mince words. The man knows what he wants. Poirier submitted former Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight titleholder Anthony Pettis with a body triangle in the third round of their UFC Fight Night 120 main event on Saturday at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Virginia. Battered, bloodied and ultimately broken, Pettis tapped 2:08 into Round 3 after suffering an apparent rib injury. The two lightweights exchanged 185 total strikes in a little more than 12 minutes, according to preliminary FightMetric data; 117 of them found their mark, including a volley of second-round Poirier elbow strikes that tore open Pettis’ face and drenched the canvas and the two combatants. Pettis resisted until the bitter end, as his body betrayed him and forced him to relent. The Roufusport star now owns a disappointing 3-5 record since he captured the lightweight crown from Benson Henderson in August 2013. Afterward, Poirier took aim at his next targets. In the aftermath of UFC Fight Night “Poirier vs.

Injury forces champ Patricio Freire out of Bellator 188; Lahat vs. Labiano new headliner

(Em português nos comentários) I’m sad to announce I’ll no longer be fighting in Israel next week. Multiple injuries prevent me to perform. A couple months ago due to a training accident I suffered a serious injury and started treating it immediately. I had to stop training for a few weeks and then I was able to start with several limitations. But due to those, other parts of my body were overcharged and new injuries kept piling up. I’ve been doing physical therapy three times a day, I was lent a 25k dollars machine to sleep with every day, and although I wasn’t in my best condition I had no intention to pull out. In all my years in Bellator I only pulled out of a fight once due to a hand fracture. Up until Wednesday the fight was 100% on. On Thursday came the doubt as one of the injuries aggravated. I deliberated with my team what to do up to 2am. I decided to test myself on Friday on my last sparring session. And then it became obvious I had no condition to step up in that cage. It’d be a disrespect to me, to the fans, to my opponent and to Bellator. I’ll have to take 30 days off and then I’ll be able to start training again.

Marlon Moraes Out-Hustles John Dodson at UFC Norfolk |

The split decision fell in Moraes’ favor and he took the moment he had on the mic to call out Jimmie Rivera, who is without an opponent for UFC 219 on Dec. 30, after Dominick Cruz fell out of the fight due to injury.

Trading Shots: Conor McGregor jumps in cage and crosses line, so now what?

But if Tyron Woodley had jumped in the cage at someone else’s fight and then shoved a ref and smacked a Bellator official, you know damn well we’d talk about it. You also know the entire MMA community and the UFC itself would come down on him like a cartoon safe, which is the part that won’t happen here solely because it’s McGregor.

Sage Northcutt focused solely on UFC career with college no longer holding him back

“Since my very first fight in the UFC, it was about two years ago, I was 19 years old,” Northcutt told MMAjunkie. “I was studying in school at the same time. I was coming out of high school. I was actually in college at Texas A&M University, so my very first fight, I was doing school at the same time. My next few fights, I was in school. But now I’ve withdrawn from school, and I’m focusing full-time on the UFC and fighting. Now I’m training at Team Alpha Male, one of the best teams in the world, and I’m growing as a fighter, getting better and better.”

Conor McGregor Expresses No Remorse for Incident at Bellator in Now Deleted Post |

McGregor caused a near melee at the event as he jumped over the cage wall to celebrate his teammate Charlie Ward earning a last second knockout in his fight but the UFC lightweight champion wasn’t a licensed corner man and the referee had yet to even finish checking on John Redmond, who had just been floored by punches.

Opinion: The UFC’s Old Epidemic

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Even for a sport as reliably strange as ours, the past week was a particularly bizarre one. Between the bookends of two excellent fight cards in UFC 217 and UFC Fight Night 120 , a month’s worth of weird went down. Yet aside from Conor McGregor ’s shenanigans at Bellator 187 , a common theme permeated the goings on of the last seven days: the repercussions of getting old in the fight game, or, as I like to call it, MMAging. Bad portmanteau aside, there’s a difference between getting old in regular life and getting old as a professional fighter. It’s not so much a defined age -- though it often is that, too -- as it is an accumulation of fight-related erosion. There are fighters like Mark Hunt , who, at age 43, is immediately acknowledged as old. Then there are fighters like Dominick Cruz . “The Dominator” is only 32, but he’s an old 32.

Dustin Poirier adamant about Eddie Alvarez rematch after TKO win over Anthony Pettis

Even after taking out his frustrations on ex-lightweight champ Anthony Pettis (20-7 MMA, 7-6 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 120, Poirier (22-5 MMA, 14-4 UFC) hasn’t forgotten about the chain of events that led him to his fight on Saturday night, and he’s got a score to settle with Alvarez (28-5 MMA, 3-2 UFC).

Matt Brown's win, Diego Sanchez's loss, and a conflict as old as the fight game

You take a grizzled old junkyard dog like Sanchez (27-11 MMA, 16-11 UFC), up a weight class and in there against a human woodchipper like Brown (21-16 MMA, 14-10 UFC), who swears it’s his last fight? You look at the knockouts that never used to find their way to Sanchez’s door, but only recently seemed to figure out exactly where he lives. You factor in the chance for Brown to get a finish that might be the finish.

Fabricio Werdum: 5 Defining Moments

It would be understandable if Fabricio Werdum shows a sense of urgency at this stage of his career. Now 40 years of age and 15 years deep into his exceptional run as a professional mixed martial artist, the two-time Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist and former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight titleholder will face Derrick Lewis in a featured UFC 216 showdown this Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Werdum needs a victory to stay in the discussion as a possible No. 1 contender in the division he once ruled. The Kings MMA export has lost twice in three appearances and last competed at UFC 213 on July 8, when he wound up on the wrong side of a majority decision against longtime rival Alistair Overeem . Notable wins over Travis Browne (twice), 2001 K-1 World Grand Prix winner Mark Hunt , former EliteXC champion Antonio Silva and onetime International Fight League titleholder Roy Nelson dot his outstanding resume. Ahead of Werdum’s three-round battle with Lewis, here are five moments that have come to define him: 1.

UFC Fight Night 120 Post-Mortem: Bloodshed in the Commonwealth

UFC Fight Night 120 on Saturday in Norfolk marked the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s first visit to Virginia since May 2012, when it witnessed a “Fight of the Year” contender between Dustin Poirier and Chan Sung Jung . This time, Poirier was involved in a blood-soaked, back-and-forth war with former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. From top to bottom, the card was occupied by compelling matchups that pushed the UFC toward its crowded holiday schedule. A Bloody Beatdown Poirier stepped into the Octagon with a chip on his shoulder. After fighting to a no-contest with another former lightweight champion in Eddie Alvarez in May, the Lafayette, Louisiana, native was looking to get back to his winning ways in the main event. He did as he planned in a bloody beatdown of Pettis. Theirs was a back-and-forth affair, one in which “The Diamond” refused to relent in the grappling exchanges while landing four of his five attempted takedowns. The fight took a turn for the worse for Pettis in the second round, where Poirier landed a hellish elbow that opened a sizeable gash above the Milwaukee native’s eyebrow.
