Valerie Letourneau says UFC 193 not the first time she's played underdog role

“People don’t know my story, but I’ve been in this sport for quite a while,” Letourneau (8-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC) told reporters on Thursday during an open workout in support of her UFC 193 pay-per-view co-headliner with Joanna Jedrzejczyk (10-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC), which takes place Saturday. “I was training in gyms where there was not even a locker (room) for girls. I was in the locker room with guys walking naked, and they didn’t care. They just wanted to make us go away. We were just a waste of time.”

Seals backs into the ropes and is rocked by a loopy overhand right and then a left hook. He staggers away and then falls onto his face. Seals Gets up and he is shaky. The fight continues and Rodriguez chases him down, swarming him. A left hook from Seals turns the tables as it floors “La Bomba.” Edwin is hurt badly and takes his time getting back up. UFC 193 staff picks: Anyone picking massive favorites Rousey, Jedrzejczyk to go down?

White: Ronda Rousey will 'probably' fight six more times in her career

Ahead of UFC 193 , White was doing a fan Q&A where he was predictably asked a lot of questions about Rousey. One of the things he was quizzed about was how much longer Rousey will compete. With a lot of outside opportunities such as a movie career, Rousey has stated in the past that she doesn't want to stick around fighting forever. But White put a solid number of fights on it when asked yesterday.

Holly Holm has been brought to tears visualizing win over Ronda Rousey

"I think she has a great mindset for fighting. She goes in with every intention to win," Holm said about Rousey. "She goes in hard, she goes in with confidence and that is huge. You can't be a fighter without that. Second thing, she deals very well with scrambles and trying to make sense of a chaotic situation. She creates it to make it chaotic and then waits for that moment for you to make a mistake and capitalizes on it."

The Rape Trial Everyone in America Should Be Watching

Any person reporting a crime committed by a police officer could face reprisal or accusations of dishonesty. A historical precedent exists, however, for black women being viewed as un-rapeable and not credible as witnesses to their own experiences with sexual violence. While some people may learn about slavery and the Jim Crow era in their high school and college classrooms, most will not learn about enslaved black women enduring forced breeding, rape, and brutal physical assaults. Most will not read about how the rape of black women functioned alongside the lynching of black people as a tool for maintaining the racial status quo after slavery ended and through the height of the civil rights movement. Black women who came forward to report crimes committed by white men during the early- to mid-20th century were especially vulnerable to violent reprisals. On rare occasions were these women's perpetrators tried or convicted for their acts of sexual violence.

The Night of Female Champions: Can Joanna Steal Ronda's Thunder? | FIGHTLAND

The best thing that could happen this weekend is that the Ronda Rousey rub works. That the casual viewers drawn in by Rousey see the brilliance of Jedrzejczyk and she becomes, in some measure, a star in her own right. But you never know how these things work. The viewing public wasn't interested in Ronda Rousey until she was already down to Bethe Correia, and after that event the internet was full of people moaning about paying full price for a sub-minute fight. This could be the highest selling event of all time, or a confusing disappointment. Either way, there's always the hope of an upset to keep things interesting and a solid card of other fights.

White addresses Aldo potentially no-showing UFC 194 rumors | BJPENN.COM

Ken Shamrock: Royce Gracie Needs to Wake Up and Realize the Sport Has Changed

Ken Shamrock has long desired another fight with Royce Gracie. | Dave Mandel/ It’s been more than 20 years since Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie last squared off in mixed martial arts competition, but Shamrock’s most obvious advantage remains the same as it did back then. That, of course, would be size, as Shamrock will likely weigh somewhere in the neighborhood of the 205 pounds when he meets the Brazilian in the headliner of Bellator 149 in Houston on Feb. 19. Gracie, meanwhile, recently told that he will tip the scales at around 180 pounds, approximately his same fighting weight for the past two decades. During the UFC’s formative years, Gracie confounded much larger foes with his Brazilian jiu-jitsu skills, back when the grappling art was little more than a curiosity in MMA. Shamrock was one of Gracie’s most prominent victims, tapping out to a rear-naked choke in just 54 seconds at UFC 1. Their second meeting at UFC 5 was a 36-minute stalemate. “The World’s Most Dangerous Man” wants to make it clear that in the sport’s current era, Gracie won’t be able to pull a fast one as easily as he did back then.

Last woman to defeat Ronda Rousey 'would really love to punch her'

Bosch, now retired from competition and still living in Holland, takes an understandable level of satisfaction from being the last person to hand the baddest woman on the planet a taste of her own medicine. To be fair, she’s plenty tough herself. Remember when a man disrupted the start of the men’s 100-meter final at the London Olympics in 2012 by throwing a plastic bottle onto the track? Bosch, sitting just behind him, rewarded the miscreant with a swift punch to the head.

UFC 193 Results: ‘Rousey vs. Holm’ Play-by-Play & Updates

UFC 135-Pound Women's Title Fight: Ronda Rousey vs. Holly Holm Round 1 Herb Dean is the referee for tonight’s 135-pound championship main event, with judges Mark Collette, Barry Foley and Charlie Keech scoring at cageside. Holm paces side to side in her corner during introductions; Rousey bounces in place, scowling at her challenger across the cage. The champ maintains her glare through final instructions and refuses a touch of gloves when Holm offers up her hands. Rousey closes the distance quickly, but Holm circles away. Holm angles off with a lovely left hand that turns Rousey’s head. A straight left from Holm connects as Rousey continues to chase her around the cage. Holm is slipping most of Rousey’s punches until about 90 seconds in, when “Rowdy” tags her with a right hand over the top. Rousey gets an underhook and rushes Holm against the fence, but Holm slips out and exits with a clean left hand. Rousey is bleeding from the nose as Holm continues to tag her with counters. Another left hand connects for Holm, but the dazed Rousey manages to clinch up and take her down with head-and-arm control.

Jake Shields, Jon Fitch to Vie for Vacant WSOF Welterweight Strap on April 1

The vacant World Series of Fighting welterweight title will find a new owner when Jake Shields and Jon Fitch square off on April 1. WSOF President Ray Sefo announced the bout during Inside MMA on Friday night. Sefo did not give a venue for the event, but he did also reveal that David Branch will defend his middleweight belt against Clifford Starks in the co-headliner. The welterweight strap was recently vacated when the Las Vegas-based promotion suspended then champion Rousimar Palhares and stripped him of his title for holding a kimura for too long in a victory over Shields at WSOF 22 on Aug. 1. The Nevada Athletic Commission then followed suit by handing the Brazilian a two-year suspension and $40,000 fine. Before he was tapped by Palhares, Shields posted first-round submission triumphs over Brian Foster and Ryan Ford in his first two WSOF appearances. Fitch, meanwhile, is 3-2 in WSOF competition, including a three-round verdict over Yushin Okami in his most recent outing on Oct. 17. Branch is currently the promotion’s middleweight and light heavyweight ruler.

UFC 193: Ronda Rousey vs. Holly Holm Toe to Toe Preview - A Complete Breakdown

Phil: Obviously Rousey wants the fight in close. In recent years, her boxing has improved - she no longer simply abandons her stance and starts marching in, but she still tends to follow opponents rather than cutting them off. In part this is because she is quite so pathologically aggressive- she can't help but take the straightest line to her prey. I'm interested to see if we see any developments in her game which have been custom-made for Holm. Personally if I was training Rousey I'd be telling her to kick Holm's leg as Holm moves away. It's a relatively easy target to hit on a constantly backwards-moving opponent, and it serves to slow them down. David: The aggression is what makes her the perfect killing machine.  Unlike Rich Franklin . It suits her all too well precisely because it hides what she's just not good at. I agree that her striking is anything but what he's been comically cracked up to be, but there's no question she's intelligent about how she uses it. By roaring past her limitations, it gives opponents the illusion that she has none.

UFC 193’s Robert Whittaker: I expect spinning crap, hokey-pokey stuff from Uriah Hall

The matchup, which serves on the pay-per-view main card on Sunday at Melbourne, Australia’s Etihad Stadium (and airs Saturday night in the U.S.), is a substitute for a planned meeting between Whittaker and popular middleweight Michael Bisping, though Whittaker sees no step down in opposition. Bisping remains on his list, as does every UFC fighter in the 185-pound division.

Fitch vs. Shields, Branch vs. Starks title fights slated for WSOF 29 in April

Prior to the title loss, Shields, who’s a former Strikeforce/EliteXC/Shooto champion, was on a 4-1 run that included WSOF wins over Brian Foster and Ryan Ford, as well as UFC victories over Demian Maia and Tyron Woodley. He now meets fellow UFC vet Fitch, who recently earned a decision victory over Yushin Okami at WSOF 24 to move to 3-1 over his past four fights (the lone defeat came to Palhares).

Australia’s UFC fans will get one final opportunity to embrace bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey before her UFC 193 title fight Saturday night with Holly Holm. After that, it’s down to business.
