LOS ANGELES – Bellator has announced plans to host a year-long grand prix heavyweight tournament in 2018 featuring eight of the roster's biggest stars with the winner becoming the new Bellator world heavyweight champion. The Bellator MMA World Grand Prix 2018 Heavyweight Tournament will air on the soon-to-launch Paramount Network.   The star-studded list of participants includes newly signed Quinton "Rampage" Jackson (37-12), Roy Nelson (23-14), Chael Sonnen (30-15-1), Frank Mir (18-11), "King Mo" (21-6, 1 NC), Fedor Emelianenko (36-5, 1 NC), Matt Mitrione (12-5) and Bellator light heavyweight champion Ryan Bader (24-5).   Spanning multiple events and locations throughout 2018, the three-round tournament allows for matchups never before thought possible and will ultimately crown a new Bellator heavyweight champion. Previously, Bellator President Scott Coker orchestrated the most recent successful heavyweight tournament in mixed martial arts with the STRIKEFORCE Heavyweight Grand Prix that spanned from 2011-12.   Matchups, dates and locations for the single-elimination grand prix will be determined shortly, as will tournament alternates who will be available to fill in due to any unforeseen circumstances.

UFC Fight Night 120 Post-Mortem: Bloodshed in the Commonwealth

UFC Fight Night 120 on Saturday in Norfolk marked the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s first visit to Virginia since May 2012, when it witnessed a “Fight of the Year” contender between Dustin Poirier and Chan Sung Jung . This time, Poirier was involved in a blood-soaked, back-and-forth war with former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. From top to bottom, the card was occupied by compelling matchups that pushed the UFC toward its crowded holiday schedule. A Bloody Beatdown Poirier stepped into the Octagon with a chip on his shoulder. After fighting to a no-contest with another former lightweight champion in Eddie Alvarez in May, the Lafayette, Louisiana, native was looking to get back to his winning ways in the main event. He did as he planned in a bloody beatdown of Pettis. Theirs was a back-and-forth affair, one in which “The Diamond” refused to relent in the grappling exchanges while landing four of his five attempted takedowns. The fight took a turn for the worse for Pettis in the second round, where Poirier landed a hellish elbow that opened a sizeable gash above the Milwaukee native’s eyebrow.

Dustin Poirier Says He Could Smell the Blood Pouring Out of Anthony Pettis’ Face

Dustin Poirier rarely fails to deliver inside the Octagon, and Saturday night was no exception. “The Diamond” engaged in a memorable battle with former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis in the UFC Fight Night 120 headliner at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Va., winning via submission 2:08 in to the third round. Poirier made things really difficult for Pettis in round two, when he opened multiple cuts on Pettis’ face with elbows from top position. From there, the bout became a bloody mess, but the Milwaukee native fought admirably in spite of the crimson mask that was impeding his vision. “It was pretty gross. I could smell the blood. It was pouring out of his face,” Poirier said on Fox Sports 1. “I was surprised he pulled his will together and got back on top a few times. It was crazy. We were scrambling all over. It was a lot of fun.” Round two brought numerous grappling exchanges and transitions, but Poirier put a final stamp on the fight in the third stanza when he trapped Pettis in a body triangle from the back and then rolled into mount when the Roufusport product attempted to turn.

Opinion: The UFC’s Old Epidemic

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Even for a sport as reliably strange as ours, the past week was a particularly bizarre one. Between the bookends of two excellent fight cards in UFC 217 and UFC Fight Night 120 , a month’s worth of weird went down. Yet aside from Conor McGregor ’s shenanigans at Bellator 187 , a common theme permeated the goings on of the last seven days: the repercussions of getting old in the fight game, or, as I like to call it, MMAging. Bad portmanteau aside, there’s a difference between getting old in regular life and getting old as a professional fighter. It’s not so much a defined age -- though it often is that, too -- as it is an accumulation of fight-related erosion. There are fighters like Mark Hunt , who, at age 43, is immediately acknowledged as old. Then there are fighters like Dominick Cruz . “The Dominator” is only 32, but he’s an old 32.

Diego Sanchez after brutal KO loss to Matt Brown at UFC-Norfolk: 'I'm not done yet'

Sanchez, who was making his 27th UFC appearance at the event after winning Season 1 of “The Ultimate Fighter” in 2005, suffered his third knockout loss in his past four fights. Conor McGregor Tabbed as Slight Favorite in Potential Boxing Match vs. Oscar De La Hoya

Conor McGregor has one boxing match under his belt, and Oscar De La Hoya has 45. Still, that hasn’t stopped one oddsmaker from making “The Notorious” one a slight betting favorite in a hypothetical bout between the two. According to , McGregor is listed as a -125 favorite in a boxing match against the retired 44-year-old former champion. De La Hoya, meanwhile, checks in at +105. "This isn't a GOAT versus an untrained boxer scenario all over again,” read a statement from a spokesperson. “With proper time to train, we expect McGregor to be quite competitive in the ring, particularly against an aging De La Hoya that doesn't possess the quickness or power he may need to win.” McGregor’s lone boxing foray came against Floyd Mayweather on Aug. 26 in Las Vegas. While many observer thought the Dublin native won some early rounds of “The Money Fight,” Mayweather ultimately prevailed via 10th round technical knockout. De La Hoya, who was one of boxing’s biggest stars during his prime, owns a 39-6 career mark and won world championships in six different weight classes over the course of his career.

Michael Bisping Agrees to Face Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Fight Night 122 in Shanghai

It appears that Michael Bisping will return to the Octagon just three weeks after losing his middleweight title at UFC 217. According to multiple outlets, Bisping has agreed to face Kelvin Gastelum in the UFC Fight Night 122 headliner in Shanghai on Nov. 25. was the first to report the news. Gastelum needed a new opponent after Anderson Silva was flagged for a potential anti-doping violation on Friday. Bisping was submitted by a Georges St. Pierre rear-naked choke in the third round of their headlining bout on Nov. 4 at Madison Square Garden. That ended a five-bout winning streak for “The Count,” who claimed the 185-pound throne with a win against Luke Rockhold and defended it once in a decision win over Dan Henderson . Gastelum last appeared at UFC on Fox 25, where he tapped to an arm-triangle choke in the third stanza against Chris Weidman . UFC Fight Night 122 takes place at Mercedes-Benz Arena and will stream in its entirety on UFC Fight Pass.

Patricio ‘Pitbull’ Injured; Jeremiah Labiano-Noad Lahat Now Headlines Bellator 188 in Israel

A second consecutive Bellator MMA card has lost its main event in the run-up to the show. Bellator featherweight champ Patricio “Pitbull” Freire has withdrawn from his Thursday title rematch with Daniel Weichel at Bellator 188 due to injury. Israel-based MMA journalist Ram Gilboa first reported the withdrawal Sunday on Twitter . Bellator 188 takes place this Thursday at the Menora Mivtachim Arena Arena in Tel Aviv and airs on Spike via tape delay on Friday. A constellation of training injuries, a knee injury chief among them, forced the Brazilian to pull out of the contest. Bellator 187 on Nov. 10 in Dublin, Ireland, was set to be headlined by a featherweight contest between James Gallagher and Jeremiah Labiano , but Gallagher was injured prior to the bout and Labiano was moved into a bout with Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Noad Lahat for Bellator 188. The Labiano-Lahat bout will now headline this Thursday's card in Tel Aviv. “A couple months ago due to a training accident I suffered a serious injury and started treating it immediately,” Freire wrote on his Instagram .

Fabricio Werdum: 5 Defining Moments

It would be understandable if Fabricio Werdum shows a sense of urgency at this stage of his career. Now 40 years of age and 15 years deep into his exceptional run as a professional mixed martial artist, the two-time Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist and former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight titleholder will face Derrick Lewis in a featured UFC 216 showdown this Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Werdum needs a victory to stay in the discussion as a possible No. 1 contender in the division he once ruled. The Kings MMA export has lost twice in three appearances and last competed at UFC 213 on July 8, when he wound up on the wrong side of a majority decision against longtime rival Alistair Overeem . Notable wins over Travis Browne (twice), 2001 K-1 World Grand Prix winner Mark Hunt , former EliteXC champion Antonio Silva and onetime International Fight League titleholder Roy Nelson dot his outstanding resume. Ahead of Werdum’s three-round battle with Lewis, here are five moments that have come to define him: 1.

Conor McGregor Unapologetic Over Bellator 187 in Deleted Twitter Post: ‘F--- Yous All’

Madness in Dublin thanks to @TheNotoriousMMA!!! DO NOT miss #Bellator187 TONIGHT on @spike 9/8c — Bellator MMA (@BellatorMMA) November 10, 2017 After grabbing headlines this past weekend for his in-cage misconduct during a Bellator MMA event, Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight titlist Conor McGregor released a brief statement on the matter Monday morning before deleting it. As Bellator 187 in Dublin, Ireland this past Friday, McGregor's SBG Ireland teammate Charlie Ward appeared to knock out fellow middleweight John Redmond with just one second left in the opening frame. Chaos then ensued as a jubilant McGregor ran into the cage and dove on Ward in celebration. Moments later, referee Marc Goddard attempted to remove McGregor from the cage as the bout had not yet been formally ruled a knockout. McGregor then slapped a Bellator MMA official who tried to escort him from the cage before running up to Goddard and shoving him, while yelling at the British official. "Bloke KO'd on floor bout a minute straight and ref trying to say fights not over Conor.

UFC Champion Amanda Nunes UFC's Only Fighter To Make New Forbes 30 Under 30 List - MMA Imports

UFC bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes rocked the Las Vegas T-Mobile Arena when she earned a dominant first round TKO over UFC superstar Ronda Rousey last year. Since then, the champion has gone on to defend her title with another victory over tough contender Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 215 . All in all, Nunes has not suffered a loss since 2014. Now, the fighter is on an impressive six fight winning streak with a professional record of 15-4. All of that in mind, it would appear that the UFC champion can now add another accolade to her collection.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - The Diamond, Part Deux

It has been three years since Dustin Poirier fell out of our featherweight top 10 and moved up 10 pounds to arguably the most difficult and competitive weight class in the sport. Now, the Lafayette, Louisiana, native is back on our big list, this time as a lightweight. If the regulation of MMA was just a little more just, “The Diamond” might have joined the top-10 mix at 155 pounds in May, when he was piecing up former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez until their bout ended in an unceremonious no-contest after Alvarez landed a pair of illegal knees. Nonetheless, Poirier seized his moment at UFC Fight Night 120 on Nov. 11, battering and bloodying former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis for 12 minutes en route to a third-round submission finish. With the victory, Poirier is now 6-1 with one no-contest in his eight bouts since returning to 155 pounds and takes the No. 8 spot on our list, bumping the previously 10th-ranked Evan Dunham to the bubble list. The events of UFC Fight Night 120 are also responsible for another top-10 exit.

Conor McGregor, Marc Goddard Issue Statements on Bellator 187 Incident

I sincerely apologize for my behavior at last weekends fight event in Dublin. While trying to support a loyal teammate and friend, I let my emotions get the best of me and acted out of line. As a multiple weight UFC champion, executive producer, role model and public figure, I must hold myself to a higher standard. The referee Marc Godard was making a horrendous decision in trying to pick an unconscious fighter up off the floor and force the fight to continue into the second round. Even against the wishes of the said fighters coach. The fight was over. After witnessing my fighter in a fight where the worst happened and the opponent passed away from his injuries on the night, I thought the worst was about to happen again, and I lost it and over reacted. I am sorry to everyone. I sincerely apologize to the Director of the Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletic Regulation, Mike Mazzulli, all the officials and staff working the event, Andy Ryan and his fighter John, two stonch ones that put up a great fight every time. That side will always have my respect, and lastly every one of my fans.

“I was talking only to Charlie Ward at this point and you will see me put my arms between him and Conor McGregor, trying to separate and restore order to notify him to go back to his corner and continue the rest period, I was trying to communicate with Charlie Ward and then trying to tell Conor to leave, it wasn’t done yet,” Goddard explained. “This is when Conor McGregor began firstly his verbal assault in my direction. My only thought at this point was to notify Charlie Ward, and his corner team, of my decision at the time and restore order to the fighting area.
