Tim Means: By The Numbers

Tim Means knows how to conduct crowd-pleasing business in the cage. The longtime Fit NHB representative will square off with former Titan Fighting Championship titleholder Belal Muhammad in a three-round welterweight showcase at UFC Fight Night 121 this Saturday at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, as the Ultimate Fighting Championship visits Australia for the first time in 2017. Means last competed at UFC Fight Night 112 on June 25, when he was awarded a unanimous decision over Tristar Gym export Alex Garcia . Known for his liberal use of close-quarters elbow strikes and a propensity for firefights, he has compiled a 9-5 record with one no-contest across two stints in the UFC. As Means makes his final preparations before facing Muhammad in a featured matchup at 170 pounds, here are some of the numbers that have come to define him: 1: Draw on his resume. Means fought Dom O’Grady to a stalemate at a King of the Cage event on July 30, 2010 in Edmonton, Alberta. 2: Post-fight performance bonuses won in his 15 UFC appearances.

Report: GSP Return Drives UFC 217 to Estimated 875,000 Pay-Per-View Buys

It wasn’t quite Conor McGregor numbers, but UFC 217 still did pretty well in the pay-per-view department. According to a report from MMAFighting.com , the Nov. 4 card at Madison Square Garden in New York did an estimated 875,000 pay-per-view buys in North America. That would make it the UFC’s top-selling card of 2017, surpassing the reported 860,000 buys drawn by UFC 214, which was headlined by a light heavyweight title rematch between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier . The main attraction of UFC 217, of course, was the return of Georges St. Pierre . The ex-welterweight champion had not competed in the Octagon since 2013, and he made a successful comeback by submitting Michael Bisping in the third round to capture the 185-pound belt. St. Pierre’s last appearance at UFC 167 did an estimated 637,000 pay-per-view buys . It was the second best for a card headlined by St. Pierre overall. Only UFC 158, topped by St. Pierre vs. Nick Diaz , did better with 950,000 pay-per-view buys. UFC 217 also saw T.J. Dillashaw claim bantamweight gold with a second-round stoppage of Cody Garbrandt in the co-main event, while Rose Namajunas upset Joanna Jedrzejczyk to win the strawweight title in another featured bout.

Anderson Silva has delivered another social media message following his recent anti-doping violation, this time hinting that he might not be at fault for the failed drug test that lead to his removal from UFC Fight Night 122 . “Thank you so much for all of the support you have shown me over the past week. This means a lot to both my family and I…I just want to keep you updated on what’s going on now,” Silva wrote on Twitter. “My medical team is working very closely with USADA to find out the reason for my suspension of UFC SHANGHAI… hopefully we will get more news very soon. Ex-UFC Title Challenger Cat Zingano Says She Has First Fight Booked Since July 2016

Cat Zingano should be returning to the Octagon in the very near future. The former UFC women’s bantamweight title challenger announced via Instagram that she has a date and opponent for her next fight, although she did not reveal specifics. Zingano hasn’t competed since a unanimous decision loss to Julianna Pena at UFC 200 in July 2016. “I have who. I have where. I know when. It’s time,” Zingano wrote. The 35-year-old Colorado native has fought just once per year since 2011. “The Ultimate Fighter” train will keep rolling along for a 27th season, and this time, the focus will be on undefeated fighters. The UFC announced Thursday that it will be holding an open casting call for male fighters with an undefeated record at 145, 155 and 170 pounds on Dec. 12 in Las Vegas. All “TUF” hopefuls must have at least three professional bouts to their credit. Those who wish to tryout must complete an online application here . The latest iteration of the long-running reality show will premiere later in 2018. “TUF 26” is nearing its conclusion and will crown the promotion’s inaugural 125-pound women’s champion on Dec. 1 in Las Vegas.

Michael Bisping: Anderson Silva ‘Completely Destroyed’ Legacy with Second Failed Drug Test

Michael Bisping has always been outspoken when one of his peers fails a drug test, and he is no different when it comes to Anderson Silva ’s transgressions. Silva was scheduled to face Kelvin Gastelum in the UFC Fight Night 122 headliner in Shanghai on Nov. 25 but was pulled from the bout due to a potential USADA anti-doping violation. As a result, Bisping stepped in on short notice to square off against Gastelum just three weeks after losing his middleweight belt to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 217. It was the second failed drug test in a little more than two years for “The Spider.” The former middleweight king tested positive for two anabolic steroids in relation to a bout against Nick Diaz at UFC 183, which he attempted to blame on a tainted sexual enhancement pill. Even as age caught up with him in recent years, the 42-year-old Brazilian has long been regarded as one of the sport’s best pound-for-pound fighters. One bout before he shocked Luke Rockhold to claim 185-pound gold, Bisping took a five-round verdict over “The Spider” in the UFC Fight Night 84 main event in London.

Sherdog’s Top 10: Hypothetical UFC-Bellator Crossover Fights - Top 10

They are the two biggest ships in the mixed martial arts sea, and their paths will never truly cross without massive changes to how the sport does business. The Ultimate Fighting Championship and Bellator MMA house a majority of the top fighters in MMA, from Demetrious Johnson , Conor McGregor , Daniel Cormier and Amanda Nunes to Douglas Lima , Michael Chandler , Patricio Freire and Darrion Caldwell . In terms of intriguing head-to-head matchmaking, the scenarios are virtually endless, be it champion-versus-champion, contender-versus-contender, legend-versus-legend or prospect-versus-prospect. For now, it all remains wishful thinking. The latest installment in the Sherdog Top 10 series focuses on the most compelling hypothetical crossover fights between the two rival promotions. *** OTHERS RECEIVING VOTES: Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler , Luke Rockhold vs. Gegard Mousasi , Robbie Lawler vs. Andrey Koreshkov , Max Holloway vs. Patricio Freire , Dustin Poirier vs. Michael Chandler , Valentina Shevchenko vs.

Fabricio Werdum tired of trash talk culture with Conor McGregor copycats

36
Kelvin Gastelum Not Committing to One Weight Class Ahead of Bout vs. Michael Bisping

Kelvin Gastelum is approaching his UFC Fight Night 122 showdown with Michael Bisping like a man who has options. “The Ultimate Fighter 17” winner began his promotional tenure at welterweight, and while he was successful there, his repeated struggles on the scales led to a move to 185 pounds. Gastelum won his first three bouts at middleweight — a win over Vitor Belfort was later overturned due to a positive marijuana test — before falling to ex-champion Chris Weidman in his most recent outing at UFC on Fox 25 this past summer. Still, Gastelum has often said he hopes to return to 170 pounds at some point — even against the wishes of UFC President Dana White. However, a win over Bisping, who only just recently lost the middleweight title, could alter his plans significantly. “I feel like if I win this fight then… I just permanently put myself in a position where I’ll be fighting for the middleweight title. If I get to fight for the middleweight title then that’s ideal,” Gastelum said during a recent media call. “But I also feel like if I do the right things and I’m able to make [170 pounds] safely and healthy, then I can do it and I want to fight for that title too.

Opening odds: Champ Cris Cyborg is a hefty favorite over Holly Holm at UFC 219

It wouldn’t be the first time Holm won a bout due to her striking skills. The former pro boxing champion faced then-bantamweight champion Rousey, who was a massive -1650 favorite in their 2015 bout at UFC 193. It’s the only time Holm was the underdog in a pro MMA bout – and she pulled off one of the sport’s biggest upset s with the head-kick knockout.

Bellator Vet Greg Rebello Punches Out Derrick Brown in CES MMA 47 Main Event

Greg Rebello let his hands do the talking. The Team Sityodtong export cut down Derrick Brown with first-round punches in the CES MMA 47 headliner on Friday at the Twin River Casino in Lincoln, Rhode Island. Brown (5-4) succumbed to blows 82 seconds into Round 1 and immediately protested referee John English’s decision to intervene. The two heavyweights circled and pawed at one another until Rebello (23-8) decided to forgo any further posturing. The 35-year-old Bellator MMA veteran froze Brown with an overhand left, pushed him toward the fence and floored him with another left upstairs. Rebello then pounced with punches until English had seen enough. Rebello has won seven of his past nine bouts. Meanwhile, New England Combat representative Nate Andrews submitted King of the Cage alum Tyler Combs with a rear-naked choke in the first round of their catchweight co-main event at 160 pounds. Combs (14-14-1) conceded defeat 2:25 into Round 1. Andrews (12-1) worked behind leg and body kicks before delivering a takedown from the clinch, settling in side control and cutting loose with punches and elbows.
