Trainer Expects Conor McGregor’s Hands to ‘Be a Lot Better Than They Were’ Upon UFC Return

If and when Conor McGregor returns to the Octagon, fans can expect a more polished striker than the one who took the lightweight title from Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205. That’s according to SGB Ireland coach John Kavanagh , who says that the “Notorious” one benefitted immensely from the centralized work he did in preparation for his boxing match against Floyd Mayweather on Aug. 26. “When would an MMA guy have a chance to take six months just to focus on one aspect of MMA? Never is the answer, they’re always trying to work on everything,” Kavanagh told the Daily Star . “But when he does return to the Octagon, his hands are going to be a lot better than what they were. And I’m excited to see that." There have been rumors that McGregor would return to the UFC for a lightweight championship unification bout against interim titlist Tony Ferguson , but the Dublin native seems to be seeking a partnership or promoter’s role with the UFC before that can happen. While UFC President Dana White previously claimed that McGregor would return by the end of 2017, that no longer appears likely at this point.

Coach: UFC Should Pay Nate Diaz $15 Million to Fight Tyron Woodley

It doesn’t appear that Nate Diaz is going to fight Tyron Woodley at UFC 219 unless the promotion is willing to make him an extremely lucrative offer. According to longtime boxing Richard Perez , the Las Vegas-based promotion hasn’t come through in that regard. Diaz hasn’t competed since losing a majority decision to Conor McGregor in their rematch at UFC 202 in August 2016. “I don’t think [they’ll fight at UFC 219]. The UFC doesn’t want to give Nathan the money,” Perez told Submission Radio . "You know, because what Woodley’s trying to do, he’s trying to get his name up there and he wants to fight the best, so he wants to fight Nathan. But UFC doesn’t want to pay Nathan, so why fight him? We can fight McGregor.” Woodley has been lobbying for a fight with Diaz at the UFC’s Dec. 30 event in Las Vegas. The reigning welterweight champion, who is coming off a successful title defense against Demian Maia at UFC 214, has sought a so-called “money fight” ever since he claimed the 170-pound title with a knockout of Robbie Lawler in 2016.

CSAC Grants Jon Jones Continuance, Moves Hearing from Dec. 12 to February

Jon Jones won’t appear before the California State Athletic Commission until next year. CSAC Executive Director Andy Foster confirmed to MMAFighting.com on Tuesday that the former UFC light heavyweight champion has been granted a continuance and will not appear before the commission until an as-yet-to-be determined date in February. Jones, who tested positive for the anabolic steroid Turinabol after his victory over Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 on July 29, had a hearing originally scheduled for Dec. 12. Jones’ victory over Cormier was changed to a no contest, and “DC” has since been reinstated as light heavyweight champion. The Jackson-Wink MMA representative also failed a drug test prior to UFC 200, testing positive for clomiphene and Letrozol. “Bones” was suspended for a year after being found negligent for using a sexual enhancement pill that contained both substances. Jones is still awaiting discipline from USADA, the UFC’s anti-doing partner, in the case as well. Recently, the Albuquerque, N.M., resident posted some optimistic content on social media, including a video with the caption, “If I made to the top of the mountain once, I can do it again.

Michael Bisping: By The Numbers

Michael Bisping did not spend much time licking his wounds. No longer atop the Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight division, Bisping will collide with “The Ultimate Fighter 17” winner Kelvin Gastelum in the UFC Fight Night 122 headliner this Saturday at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai, China. “The Count” answered the call to fill in for Anderson Silva , who was removed from the event after the United States Anti-Doping Agency notified him of a potential violation. One of the sport’s most successful and polarizing figures, Bisping last competed at UFC 217 on Nov. 4, when he was choked unconscious and surrendered his 185-pound championship to the returning Georges St. Pierre at Madison Square Garden in New York. The loss snapped a run of five consecutive victories for the Englishman, his longest such streak since he started his professional career 14-0. As Bisping prepares to take on Gastelum in the UFC’s first visit to mainland China, here are some of the numbers that have come to define him: 2: Fighters in UFC history who have spent more than six hours competing in the Octagon.

Daniel Cormier tweeted something peculiar about Tony Ferguson, Khabib Nurmagomedov

Purely speculating here, but before the Cris Cyborg-Holly Holm title fight got booked last week , my guess is the UFC tossed some Hail Mary’s in hopes of booking a main-event worthy fight for the Dec. 30 pay-per-view in Las Vegas. Ferguson vs. Nurmagomedov was one of those desperation inquiries, even though Nurmagomedov is already booked against Edson Barboza on the card.

Jose Aldo: There Was Never Any Rivalry Between Conor McGregor and I

The buildup to the showdown between Conor McGregor and Jose Aldo was one of the biggest ongoing stories of 2015, a saga that began to unfold in January of that year and didn’t conclude until December. Part of that included an unprecedented 12-city, 10-day press tour to hype a proposed meeting between the two men at UFC 189 that summer. McGregor did his best to incite Aldo during the tour, and what appeared to be the foundation of a rivalry was born. However, Aldo pulled out of UFC 189 due to a rib injury, which allowed even more time for their feud to blossom, as McGregor constantly expressed doubt that the Brazilian would show up to the fight. Aldo, meanwhile, didn’t seem too upset with the barbs, claiming that the Irishman was “making me money.” When they finally did square off, McGregor ended Aldo’s featherweight championship reign in a shocking 13 seconds. Aldo broke down in tears and called for a rematch. But McGregor never came back to 145 pounds, instead moving up to lightweight to capture that title and then, on to a lucrative boxing match with Floyd Mayweather .

That's the second time someone shamelessly pulls on the towel. I find it hard to believe that people like DC and Kelvin are either legit cheaters or lack the discipline to lose the weight. I find it much more believable that this weight cutting process is shit. Period.

Why Matt Mitrione was initially bummed by Bellator heavyweight grand prix

“Yeah, I think I expected it, to be honest,” he said. “I feel like I’m the best heavyweight Bellator has to offer, and I say rather readily that on any given day, I’m the best heavyweight in the world. I had just a couple of missteps (during my UFC career), and it cost me a pretty substantial amount in my name value, but I feel like when it comes down to scrapping, I’m one of the best in the world. So I’m not surprised I’m the favorite.

Andre Soukhamthath Replaces Injured Caraway, Meets Luke Sanders at UFC Fight Night 123

Andre Soukhamthath will step in for the injured Bryan Caraway and face Luke Sanders at UFC Fight Night 123 . The promotion announced the new matchup on Tuesday. UFC Fight Night 123 takes place at Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif., on Dec. 9 and is headlined by a featherweight duel between Cub Swanson and Brian Ortega . The card will be televised on Fox Sports 1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass. Soukhamthath, 29, is still looking for his first Octagon triumph after dropping split decisions to Alejandro Perez and Albert Morales in initial two UFC appearances. “The Asian Sensation” owns an 11-5 career mark that includes seven victories by KO/TKO and three via submission. Sanders suffered the first defeat of his 12-bout pro career at UFC 209, when he was submitted by Iuri Alcantara in the second round of their clash. 5 Things You Might Not Know About Kelvin Gastelum

Kelvin Gastelum traded in one former Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholder for another. “The Ultimate Fighter 17” winner will meet deposed middleweight champion Michael Bisping in the UFC Fight Night 122 headliner this Saturday at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai, China, where he can add a significant piece to an already impressive resume. Bisping serves as a short-notice replacement for Anderson Silva , who was flagged for a potential violation by the United States Anti-Doping Agency. Gastelum, 26, has compiled an 8-3 record inside the Octagon but has not competed since he submitted to a third-round arm-triangle choke from Chris Weidman at UFC on Fox 25 in July. Operating out of Kings MMA and training under the watchful eye of Rafael Cordeiro , Gastelum has become a finely tuned offensive weapon, with nine of his 13 career victories coming by knockout, technical knockout or submission. As Gastelum prepares for his pivotal showdown with Bisping, here are five things you might not know about him: 1. He was shaped by countless hours on the mat. Gastelum won a state wrestling championship at Cibola High School in Yuma, Arizona, in 2009.

Kailin Curran is 'good at losing,' but feels due for a win at UFC-Shanghai

“I say this a lot: I got good at losing,” Curran told MMAjunkie. “My record doesn’t really show the kind of fighter I am. My record doesn’t show what I’m actually capable of. I was bummed for sure. Piccolotti will be looking to rebound from the first loss of his pro career. At Bellator 183 in September, he was submitted by Goiti Yamauchi in the first round. Before that, he had a perfect 9-0 start to his career, including 5-0 for Bellator with three submission finishes. Like Rickels, Piccolotti has been used to fighting at home. The Bay Area resident has had all 10 of his pro fights in California, and nine of the 10 have been either in San Jose or San Francisco.
