UFC Fight Night 101 Prelims: Daniel Kelly, Ben Nguyen, Jason Knight All Victorious in Australia

Four-time Olympian Daniel Kelly was barely recognizable through all the gore but nevertheless emerged with his hand raised. The decorated judoka overcame two horrific cuts near his hairline to earn a unanimous decision against Chris Camozzi in the featured UFC Fight Night 101 “Whittaker vs. Brunson” prelims on Saturday ( online betting ) at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia. Scores were 29-28, 29-27 and 30-27, all for the ageless Kelly (12-1, 5-1 UFC). Camozzi (24-12, 9-9 UFC) opened a gnarly gash on the Australian with a standing elbow strike in the first round. Blood sprang forth immediately, but Kelly was undeterred. The 39-year-old kept moving forward, and slowly wore down Camozzi. Kelly spent nearly the entire second round in top position after delivering a trip takedown and pushed “The Ultimate Fighter 11” graduate to the canvas again late in the third. It was enough to swing the scorecards. Kelly has won three fights in a row. Brown Stuns Struggling Tuck Cage Warriors Fighting Championship alum Damien Brown notched his seventh victory in eight appearances, as he eked out a contentious split decision over Jon Tuck in a preliminary lightweight matchup.

By the Numbers: UFC Melbourne

After an evening filled with decisions, Robert Whittaker and Derek Brunson ended UFC Fight Night 101 “Whittaker vs. Brunson” with a flourish. The two middleweight contenders put on a show for most of the opening stanza before Whittaker claimed victory via technical knockout 4:07 into the opening frame of the evening’s main event at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on Saturday night ( online betting ). Brunson lunged wildly at his Australian opponent and appeared to have him reeling early on, but Whittaker recovered to turn the tide by landing a stiff jab followed by a right high kick. With Brunson in a defensive shell, Whittaker pounded away with punches, forcing his opponent to the canvas and continuing to unload before the bout was halted. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night 101, with statistics courtesy of 5: Consecutive middleweight victories for Whittaker, tying him with Michael Bisping and Krzysztof Jotko for the second-longest active streak in the division. No. 1 contender Yoel Romero is first with eight straight triumphs.

Pending Commission Approval, Tim Kennedy vs. Kelvin Gastelum Set for UFC 206

The UFC seems to be pretty confident that Kelvin Gastelum will win his appeal with the New York State Athletic Commission. The Las Vegas-based promotion announced on Saturday night that Gastelum will face Tim Kennedy in a middleweight bout at UFC 206 on Dec. 10. However, that bout will only go forward if it receives approval from the Ontario Office of the Athletics Commissioner. The Ontario commission will likely only give the go-ahead to Gastelum if he wins his appeal of the six-month suspension he received from the NYSAC for failing to appear at weigh-ins ahead of his UFC 205 bout with Donald Cerrone . Gastelum did not show up because he was reportedly grossly overweight, resulting in the cancellation of his bout with Cerrone. Gastelum last appeared at UFC 200, where he took a decision win over ex-welterweight king Johny Hendricks . Kennedy, meanwhile, was supposed to face Rashad Evans at both UFC 205 and UFC 206, but a medical issue twice forced Evans out of the matchup. Kennedy will be fighting for the first time since suffering a third-round TKO defeat to Yoel Romero at UFC 178 in September 2014.

McGregor Relinquishes FW Belt; Holloway-Pettis Interim Title Bout Headlines UFC 206

The stakes have been raised for Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis at UFC 206 . The UFC announced on Saturday night that Conor McGregor has “relinquished” his featherweight title, making former interim 145-pound king Jose Aldo the new undisputed champion of the division. Meanwhile, Holloway and Pettis will square off for interim featherweight gold in the new UFC 206 headliner, with the winner presumably getting a future title unification showdown with Aldo. UFC 206 was in need of a new main event after light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier withdrew from his rematch with Anthony Johnson after suffering a groin tear. Johnson will not remain on the card. UFC 206 takes place on Dec. 10 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto and airs on pay-per-view. McGregor briefly become a two-division champion when he knocked out Eddie Alvarez to claim the lightweight strap at UFC 205 on Nov. 12. While McGregor didn’t seem too keen on vacating one of his belts, UFC President Dana White had been adamant that the Irishman would give up one of the titles with a victory at Madison Square Garden.

Khabib Nurmagomedov isn't going to wait around for Conor McGregor to defend the title

While Nurmagomedov still hopes to one day wrestle the real lightweight title away from McGregor, it seems he's resigned to compete for an interim belt in his absence. Nurmagomedov had previously stated that if he didn't receive a title shot in his next fight in the UFC that he would leave the organization.

After loss to Akhmedov at UFC Fight Night 101, 33-fight veteran Kyle Noke announces retirement

A veteran of “The Ultimate Fighter 11,” Noke leaves the promotion with an even 6-6 record. He fought five times on home soil. One year ago, he notched a triumphant win at UFC 193, where more than 56,000 fans watched him stop Peter Sobotta with a front kick and punches. He won a $50,000 bonus for the performance, his second such award with the promotion.

UFC Fight Night 101's Robert Whittaker welcomes fight with surging Gegard Mousasi

Going into UFC Fight Night 101, it was understood that Brunson (16-4 MMA, 7-2 UFC) was on the cusp of a title eliminator with five straight wins. After an early swarm against Whittaker (17-4 MMA, 8-2 UFC), however, he carelessly chased a finish and wound up getting countered with several shots that forced a stoppage for Whittaker in the first round.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - The Middle Gets Even Thicker

Over the last two years, the middleweight division steadily has gotten deeper, more competitive and more compelling. Yoel Romero looks like he is next for champion Michael Bisping , while Luke Rockhold and Ronaldo Souza are still waiting in the wings; the UFC does not need another 185-pound power player right this second. Gegard Mousasi and Robert Whittaker clearly do not care. In recent days, the perennial standout Mousasi and the upstart prospect Whittaker racked up first-round stoppage victories that have them on the move up the divisional rankings, as well as toward UFC title contention. Mousasi, who spent 14 months haunted by his shocking knockout loss to Uriah Hall , exorcised those demons on Nov. 19 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where he punched out Hall in the first round for his fourth straight win since being upset. A week later, Whittaker was thrust into headlining duties in Melbourne, Australia, and used his powerful left hand to knock out Derek Brunson and signal his own emergence as a middleweight contender.

Opinion: The Champion of Interims

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * History didn’t last very long. Two weeks after Conor McGregor became the third person to win Ultimate Fighting Championship titles in two different weight classes -- and the first to do so simultaneously -- the biggest star in the sport no longer holds that distinction. Instead, the man he knocked out with a single punch has now been upgraded from the interim featherweight champion to the “undisputed” featherweight champion. Meanwhile, Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis will fight for the now vacant interim featherweight championship at UFC 206 . If you’re scratching your head at all this, you’re not alone. Interim belts are strange in and of themselves, but they do serve a purpose. Being the champion denotes being the best fighter in the division. When there is ample reason to doubt that, the champion, in theory, defends his or her strap against the top contender.

Vitor Belfort vs. Nick Diaz? “The Phenom” Wants A Piece Of Stockton’s Finest

“I would love to fight him. I’d give him another head kick. I know he doesn’t have a fight, doesn’t want to fight anyone. He’s picking a rematch, right? He chose Dan Henderson. He chose Dan Henderson to fight, so I’m offering myself. He doesn’t want to fight ‘Jacare’ (Souza), so let’s do this rematch. The UFC is doing a lot of rematches, and he has this fight stuck (in his throat). He tried to avenge that loss to Dan Henderson and only wins robbed decisions. I will put an end to this. I won’t let it go to the judges. I’ll give him another head kick.”

It’s likely that Nicholas Walters will have different luck moving forward after what happened at the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas ( online betting ). In the main event of an HBO-televised championship bout with Vasyl Lomachenko on Saturday night, Walters quit on his stool in between rounds seven and eight because he was thoroughly out-classed and couldn’t get anything going. Lomachenko, who won two Olympic gold medals and is considered by many as the greatest amateur boxer in history, perplexed the Jamaican from the start with is masterful movement and precision punching. Lomachenko was perfect inside the ropes and tagged his foe whenever he wanted from any angle he wanted and Walters eventually folded mentally.

Glover Teixeira vs. Jimi Manuwa Targeted for UFC 208

The UFC's light heavyweight title clash between Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson may have been cancelled at UFC 206, but the division is not at a standstill. Flocombat have confirmed with sources close to the bout a fight between Glover Teixeira and Jimi Manuwa is being targeted for UFC 208 on January 21 at the Honda Center in Anaheim. Although both fighters are ranked in the elite tier of the division, it would be highly unlikely that a win for either man would put them ahead of Johnson in the light heavyweight pecking order. However, an impressive performance could very well put the winner in contention for a shot at the title later in the year. Teixeira is coming off the back of a devastating knockout to loss to Anthony Johnson back at UFC 202 in August. Prior to the loss to Johnson he'd won three on the bounce over tough competition that included Ovince Saint Preux, Patrick Cummins and Rashad Evans. All three wins came inside the distance with one submission and two TKO/KO victories over Cummins and Evans. The Brazilian's loss to Johnson at UFC 202 was the first time he'd be beaten by knockout in over 14 years and it happened in dramatic circumstances with only 13 seconds on the clock.

UFC Fight Night 101: Andrew Holbrook vs. Jake Matthews video highlights

The mat-based affair went the way of Holbrook (12-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) when he was able to impose his grinding gameplan on the more athletic Matthews (10-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC). A foot injury to Matthews slowed him as well, but it was the top game of Holbrook that earned him the split decision on the scorecards by tallies of 29-28, 28-29, and 29-28.

UFC tells networks: Go big

When the UFC was for sale earlier this summer, the company told potential buyers that it expected to see a nearly fourfold increase in its media rights revenue. Its magic number is $450 million a year, a potentially staggering increase from the $115 million annual average that Fox Sports now pays, according to several media and UFC sources. Although formal negotiations aren’t expected to start until next year, network executives have learned that the UFC plans to seek at least a 10-year deal under those terms, sources said. Fox Sports signed its current media deal with UFC in 2011 and shows events on broadcast and cable. Photo by: FOX SPORTS The UFC’s current media deal with Fox Sports, seen as a watershed moment for the series when it was signed in 2011, ends in 2018. Fox Sports has an exclusive window to negotiate a renewal starting in late 2017. WME-IMG co-CEO Ari Emanuel helped negotiate the UFC’s Fox deal as a consultant in 2011 and is expected to be a big part of these negotiations.
