MMAjunkie’s 'Submission of the Month' for November 2014

“The best submissions and best stuff in the cage happen when you don’t really think about it,” Rockhold told MMAjunkie. “The guillotine is my No. 1 submission in the gym. I would say probably 60 percent of the time I finish it with one hand. As the longer, rangier grappler, I can do different things with my body. I never really try to finish the guillotine from the bottom. I always use it as a sweep into mount. As he came up into me as I was punching him, his neck was so open that I just decided to listen to my instincts and do what I do best.

Russell Peters: I think UFC could have come up against boxing if the fighters made more money

"It's popular right now, but you have to understand boxing has been around forever and there's far more money to be made in boxing. I think UFC or MMA could have come up if the fighters made more money. But I think everybody is underpaid."

Strikes and Serves: Female athletes and the struggle for equality in tennis and MMA

"But I will say that some of the other shows that I fought weren't so good. I've had people pinch my ass on the way to the cage. Sometimes the male fighters were really supportive and sometimes they were horrible. I had one guy say, "I'm going to fuck you in your mouth." Just horrible, horrible things said to me. People not paying you much, people disrespecting you, being moved in a card over and over again so that you're the last fight of the night and no one is there to watch. All sorts of things have happened like that to me, but I think that the struggle has helped me appreciate what I'm doing more. It makes me more in love with what I'm doing."

Nice in Nice: New Bellator signee Aaron Pico defeats 2013 world wrestling champion

While Safaryan's gold in the 2013 World Championships came as a bit of a surprise (and I found his finals match against Cuba's Livan Lopez to be...interesting), the Armenian is a battle-tested fixture on the Senior-level freestyle circuit, and legitimately one of the planet's best wrestlers at 65 kilograms. Pico's defeat of Safaryan has to rank as the most impressive international freestyle wrestling accomplishment since Dave Schultz medalled at Georgia's hallowed Tblisi tournament back in the 1970s (there have been some notable domestic wins by high schoolers since then, such as Damion Hahn's freestyle win over Cael Sanderson, but the instant victory blows that out of the water).

SBNation Featherweight Rankings: Edgar and McGregor on the rise.

The last time the SBNation panel gave the featherweight division a look was back in February. Since then a lot of things have changed and a lot of things have stayed the same. Jose Aldo , Frankie Edgar , Ricardo Lamas , and Chad Mendes still make up the top 4 spots. But, in that time Conor McGregor has blossomed from prospect to contender, white Chan-Sung Jung has gone from divisional mainstay to long-term hiatus. The cream of the crop may still be the same, but the sea of new talent is boiling beneath them.

Jiu-Jitsu World League aims to professionalize the sport

Machado, a Carlos Gracie, Jr. black belt and member of one of jiu-jitsu's royal families, along with Tinley, a sports entrepreneur whose has pursued myriad efforts such as representing Mike Tyson and creating sports programming for television networks, argue the sport's potential is woefully untapped. The athletes don't need to be mistreated, they contend, to say nothing of the fact there are other consequences to not properly compensating them. In addition, they are adamant jiu-jitsu should be fun for everyone, including fans who shouldn't have to train to enjoy what's happening.

2015 Bloody Elbow MMA Scouting Report #3 Light Heavyweight: Rasim Kurbanismailov

I think it's fair to wonder a bit why a fighter like Kurbanismailov ended up sliding so far up this list, and the answer is simply that the combination of athleticism, aggression, and wrestling is rare enough to prospects at light heavyweight, that it's hard to ignore a guy who is bringing all 3. Kurbanismailov has a really nice takedown arsenal, and the imposing size and strength to make it happen even without a lot of secondary tools. His striking is raw, but powerful, and his grappling is aggressive, and athletic if a bit sloppy. Simply put, and right down to the foolish submission loss, Kurbanismailov has the hallmarks of a fighter who could find a lot more success down the line.

Champ Johny Hendricks humbled by career-long layoff ahead of UFC 181

“I think it was perfect because when I got cleared, we started doing a little testing on (my bicep) and started training hard,” Hendricks told MMAjunkie. “The Monday that I got the call (to fight at UFC 181), I had already worked out once that day and we talked about it and said, ‘Yeah.’ The bicep is feeling good, it works out good, and I can’t complain at all about it. It worked out perfect.”

Why You Should Leave The Pettis Style Stuff To The Experts

A cage-jump Superman punch is cool ... but only if you manage to somewhat pull it off. Otherwise you'll look as silly as this guy in the video above, who ends up down on the canvas getting pummeled. According to the video description he ends up winning anyways, but I still recommend the Keep It Simple, Stupid approach to fighting ... at least until you go pro!

Report: Rourke's opponent was living homeless, paid to take a dive in the 4th

For those living way outside the combat sports bubble over this last holiday weekend, Mickey Rourke fought an exhibition boxing match in Russia. The 62 year old returned to the ring for the first time since the 90's in a continuation of his on-again-off-again ring career. This being an exhibition match, it wasn't about to go on anybody's record, neither Rourke's 6-0-2, or his opponent, Elliot Seymour's 1-9. Which, of course, sets the stage perfectly for a farcical fight in which more injuries were faked than blows landed. You can see the entire fight below:

After introspection phase, healthier Matt Wiman plans to keep fighting

One of the game’s most introspective competitors, Matt Wiman , made a successful return to the Octagon last Saturday night after nearly two years away. Wiman was able to defeat Isaac Vallie-Flagg via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 57 in Austin, getting his first taste of victory since a Sept. 2012 submission of Paul Sass in England. It’s been a long, long time. So, what’s taken him so long to return to action after suffering a knockout loss to lightweight T.J. Grant in early 2013? A very honest, very candid Matt Wiman talked about the nerves he had to overcome to step in the Octagon again -- nerves that played a factor in him contemplating whether or not he wanted to continue fighting at all. He appeared on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour to talk about his hiatus and his return. "I didn’t feel that rusty to be honest with you, I don’t know what it was," Wiman told host Ariel Helwani. "I think maybe the nervousness of it all was the hardest part. Getting through the nerves of that it’s actually happening, anticipating something every night for four months, because I knew about the fight probably four months in advance.

Trading Shots: Is Wanderlei Silva the advocate fighters need, or just the one they're stuck with?

Fowlkes: I’m not sure I agree with your claim that Silva’s drug testing woes have nothing to do with the issues he’s raising now. Seems to me that they’re sort of the catalyst for everything we’re hearing from him now. Honestly, all this stuff he’s saying about fighter pay, about restrictive contracts, this vague but recurring complaint of a lack of respect, whether you agree with him or not, I don’t think you can say that any of these issues are new. If it’s bothering Silva now, why didn’t it bother him two or three years ago? How are we not supposed to think that he’s only speaking out now because he’s angry at the UFC, and now feels (again, because he was pretty much banned after that drug test dodge) he has nothing to lose by making them angry at him?
