Preview: UFC 217 ‘Bisping vs. St. Pierre’ - Bisping vs. St. Pierre

The Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s second trip to Madison Square Garden is finally upon us, which means before this weekend is over, either Georges St. Pierre will be the middleweight ruler of the MMA world or Michael Bisping will own wins over GSP, Dan Henderson and Anderson Silva . There is a cynical side to this historic fight, as we know St. Pierre is trying to cherry pick a title in a second weight class against a Cinderella-esque champion that people still cannot believe won the belt at all. Furthermore, we know that even if Robert Whittaker had three healthy knees instead of one, the promotion would have made this fight in hopes of creating a blockbuster event without Conor McGregor present. Nonetheless, we could not have reasonably conceived of a Bisping-St. Pierre showdown when GSP left the sport four years ago. If the UFC’s promotional bluster is to be believed, the Bisping-St. Pierre winner will meet aforementioned interim champion Whittaker at UFC 221 in February in Perth, Australia. Sorry, Western Australia, but I have a feeling you are due to be swerved.

Ramos misses a huge right hand but slips away from the counter. Jab for Ramos. Low kick, but Zahabi answers back with a flurry of punches. Zahabi’s nose is reddened, but he lands a big shot to the body. Two minutes left. Ramos slips in for a takedown, but Zahabi rolls with it and is able to work himself back to the feet. Ramos looks for a throw, but Zahabi defends and slips to the back. Ramos turns in and back to the cage. Zahabi controlling from the outside. Ramos just focused on staying upright, and Zahabi drives in a few knees. Takedown by Ramos. Zahabi again nearly able to roll through it, but Ramos adjusts and takes the back. Not much time, but he punches a bit and looks for the choke. Not there, but MMAjunkie gives the close round to Ramos on the late work, 10-9.

Georges St. Pierre: By The Numbers

Georges St. Pierre left mixed martial arts at the height of his power a little less than four years ago and returns to a sport brimming with skepticism regarding his prospects for success. St. Pierre will challenge Michael Bisping for the Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight crown in the UFC 217 headliner this Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York. There, he can join B.J. Penn , Randy Couture and Conor McGregor as the only fighters in UFC history to capture titles in two different weight classes. St. Pierre has not fought since he vacated the welterweight championship following a successful but controversial title defense against Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 in November 2013. Nevertheless, the Tristar Gym cornerstone carries with him a stellar 25-2 record -- he avenged both losses in decisive fashion -- and one of MMA’s most enduring resumes. As St. Pierre prepares to challenge Bisping in his long-awaited comeback, here are some of the numbers that have come to define him: 1: Canadian besides St.

Confused by the Curtis Blaydes-Aleksei Oleinik finish at UFC 217? Here's an explanation

Here’s what we do know: Late in the opening round of the UFC Fight Pass prelim bout, Blaydes (8-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) put it on Oleinik (55-11-1 MMA, 4-2 UFC). It was fierce. Blaydes knocked him down once, then essentially let him fall down under his own power shortly thereafter, and the net result was to send a bloodied and dazed Oleinik staggering back to his corner when the round ended.

Dana White on Conor McGregor’s Use of Homophobic Slur: ‘It’s Definitely a Problem’

Conor McGregor wasn’t the first fighter in UFC history to be caught using a homophobic slur, but he might be the most prominent. The lightweight champion was captured on film using the term “f——t” to describe Andre Fili backstage at UFC Fight Night 118 following teammate Artem Lobov ’s loss to Fili in Gdansk, Poland, on Oct. 21. Dana White recently addressed the issue in a brief interview with TMZ Sports , and the UFC president says that he doesn’t condone such remarks. “We’ve had a problem with that lately,” White said. “It’s been more than him. We’ve had a problem with that. It’s a thing that you have to educate people on. I’ve had my history with it myself. It’s definitely a problem, and something we need to focus on.” McGregor isn’t the only one to have been caught using a homophobic slur recently. During an altercation with Michael Bisping the fighters’ hotel in New York City, Jorge Masvidal appears to use the same derogatory term at the conclusion of the incident. The video of the confrontation has since been taken down. McGregor, meanwhile, apologized for his actions during an appearance on “The Late, Late Show.

UFC President Expects Successful Negotiations with Conor McGregor for Octagon Return

Conor McGregor made waves earlier this week when he claimed that he would need to be both a promoter and a fighter in order to make his UFC return. “They’ve got to entice me now because I came from a billion dollar fight. You’ve got to entice me with some equity, I want ownership, I want partner….I want to be true partners in this similar to the way I was in the Floyd fight,” McGregor said during a scrum interview posted by . “I was a promoter and I was a fighter. That must continue for me to continue. Otherwise I’ve got many entities and many interests that can carry on also. I’m already set. They must entice me.” Of course, McGregor has new leverage after earning a career-best payday for his boxing match with Floyd Mayweather on Aug. 26. But even before that bout, “The Notorious” one had established himself as the Las Vegas-based promotion’s biggest star, as pay-per-views headlined by the Dublin native have consistently topped more than 1 million buys. Meanwhile, UFC President Dana White has repeatedly said in various interviews that he expects McGregor to compete in the Octagon before the conclusion of 2017.

10 November Tussles Worth Watching

In an effort to bring more attention to the global stage of mixed martial arts, this list does not focus on major North American-based promotions like the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Bellator MMA and the Professional Fighters League. *** Not many mixed martial artists walk away on their own terms. Ben Askren plans to do so. Askren will defend his welterweight title against Japanese submission savant Shinya Aoki in the One Championship “Immortal Pursuit” co-main event on Nov. 24 at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. Win or lose against Aoki, the four-time NCAA All-American wrestler, two-time national champion and 2008 Olympian intends to retire at the age of 33. His flag planted at the Roufusport academy in Milwaukee, Askren has rattled off three straight wins since his April 2015 encounter with Luis Santos resulted in a no-contest. He last fought at One Championship “Shanghai” on Sept. 2, when he put away Zebaztian Kadestam with second-round punches to move his undefeated record to 17-0. Prior to his arrival in One Championship , Askren lorded over Bellator’s welterweight division -- a three-year reign that saw him defeat Lyman Good , Jay Hieron , Douglas Lima , Karl Amoussou and Andrey Koreshkov .

With 80 seconds left, Gall got an arm-in guillotine choke after one of many fence grabs in the fight, but Brown popped his head out. With 10 seconds left, Brown stood up and cockily told Gall to get back to his feet. But there clearly wasn’t enough time for him to get anything done.

Cody Garbrandt and T.J. Dillashaw burying hatchet after UFC 217? We asked Urijah Faber

Faber, though, knows this isn’t a typical dust-up – the kind fighters sometimes use to promote single bouts against a single opponent. Yearlong feuds aren’t so easily dismissed and forgotten, especially when it was seemingly reignited each week with airings of “The Ultimate Fighter 25,” on which Garbrandt and Dillashaw served as opposing head coaches.
