After callout, Fabio Maldonado to Ovince Saint Preux: 'Challenge accepted'

The 31-year-old got the win in tough conditions; he traveled to Rua’s home country, where “Shogun” is a massive star. He also fought in a 90-degree venue that lacks air conditioning, and he walked to the cage at nearly 4 a.m. local time.

Heroes, Martyrs, And Myths: The Battle For The Rights Of Transgender Athletes | VICE Sports

The condescending nature in which the letter is penned, accusing those who side with trans inclusion of being ignorant of "fundamental biology" that must have been missed in "high school" is nothing new. Soon thereafter, self-professed LGBT ally Wendy Williams used her talk show as a platform to host an immensely transphobic panel discussion that included a joke about Jönsson's last name and unqualified medical advice. The easy dissemination of this type of misinformation seems to be making the world a less friendly place for trans athletes. As LGBT rights advance in so many other areas, trans rights lag to the point where a woman wanting to compete in a women's sporting division is somehow controversial simply because she is transgender.

It's time for Dana White to have a long talk with "Shogun" Rua

It was one of the hardest moments to watch for any real fan of mixed martial arts, especially those who have followed the sport since Rua first burst on the scene in 2003 as a member of the PRIDE roster. Rua's warrior spirit can never be questioned, but with a 1-4 record in his last five fights and two straight knockout defeats that scrambled his brain, it might be time for someone to intervene in his career.

No Judges Necessary - Rockhold Wins on Record-Setting Night

On a thrilling night at the Allphones Arena in Sydney, Australia that saw a UFC record set for most finishes in one event with 11, it was only fitting that middleweight contender Luke Rockhold ended his feud with Michael Bisping with a spectacular submission, forcing “The Count” to tap out in the second round of the UFC Fight Night main event. Each bout on the card ended before the final horn sounded, with the 11 finishes surpassing 2008’s UFC Fight Night 13 and 2013’s UFC on FUEL TV 10 cards, each of which had 10 early endings. But no finish was probably sweeter than Rockhold’s submission of Bisping, as the two traded barbs with each other for the past few months leading up to Friday’s bout. When it was over though, the two buried the hatchet. “It’s in the past now,” Rockhold said. “I don’t think we’ll ever be friends but I’ve got a lot of respect for him. He’s a warrior.” Bisping had similarly respectful words for his former nemesis, while insisting that this setback was only a minor one.

The three stars of ‘UFC Fight Night 55: Rockhold vs. Bisping’ in Australia

Save for the mishap against Vitor Belfort in his UFC debut, Rockhold has continued to reveal the extent of his talents little by little in each fight. Against Costas Philippou, he showed off his tremendous kicking ability while scoring a body-kick TKO. Against Tim Boetsch, he showed off slick grappling with an inverted-triangle/kimura submission. And against Bisping, he put the whole package together as a kick set up the submission.

Ovince St. Preux ‘a little surprised’ with 34-second victory over ‘Shogun’ Rua

"I don't think he was slow at all," he said. "The thing about me is that I'm super explosive and I can take you to the ground super quickly. I think he mistook my reach so I was able to catch him. I don’t think he’s slow, he still have it. He hit me with a couple of good leg kicks."

UFC Fight Night Sydney and Uberlandia: Fights to make for main card winners

Dhiego Lima . Well I already said he should fight Claudio Silva , so there's really not much more for me to add. It's a bit concerning on his part that he seemed to lose his cool after failing to submit Jorge de Oliveira in the 1st round and then blasting him with a blatant illegal knee. He still won in reasonably comfortable fashion, but for as long as he continues to look frazzled by bursts of offense, I'm not too optimistic on his chances of being a high-level welterweight in the long-term.

Ortiz’s relationship with Herrera goes back a long, long way. Herrera was Ortiz’s high school wrestling coach, and he’s trained with Herrera off and on for years. Ortiz indicates that sending Herrera in to work with Bonnar was his plan all along, that it really had nothing to do with him not wanting to work with Herrera, and that it had everything to do with having an insider in Bonnar’s camp.

The Hit List: The Top 5 moments from UFC Sydney and Uberlandia

If Ovince Saint Preux was going to beat Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, it was going to be a slow grind due to Saint Preux's superior reach, clinch and athleticism. At least that was the scouting report going into Saturday night in Uberlandia. Saint Preux must not have read it. He landed a perfect left hook with Rua coming in and dropped the legend less than a minute into the fight. Saint Preux went for the finish and just 34 seconds he had knocked out "Shogun."

39
The heartbreaking riddle of 'Shogun' Rua

The thing that makes it tough with “Shogun” Rua is, he’s not even that old. He’ll be 33 later this month. On the very same night that Rua (22-10 MMA, 6-8 UFC) got trucked by Saint Preux (17-6 MMA, 5-1 UFC), Bernard Hopkins boxed (and got beat up, but not knocked out) on HBO at 49. Can you blame Rua if he thinks he ought to have at least a few more years left? We know it doesn’t work that way, even though that seems unfair, kind of like when a college kid starts going bald. Even if he knew it was going to happen eventually, he thought he had more time.

Heavyweight Guram Gugenishvili Killed in Car Accident at 28

Photo: M-1 Global Heavyweight prospect Guram Gugenishvili was killed in a car accident Sunday in his native Georgia. M-1 Global , Gugenishvili’s longtime promoter, today confirmed the news; details of the accident were not disclosed. Gugenishvili was 28 years old. “He was a great athlete and a kind, open-hearted person,” the organization wrote in a brief statement . A physically gifted fighter with a powerful grappling base, 6-foot-5 Gugenishvili claimed multiple M-1 heavyweight titles while compiling an 11-0 record in his first two years as a mixed martial artist. The Georgian will perhaps be best remembered for his trilogy of bouts with American Kenny Garner , who scored stoppages of Gugenishvili in their last two meetings. In April, Gugenishvili returned from an injury-induced 16-month hiatus to punch out Tony Bonello under the Inoki Genome Fight banner in what would be his final bout. According to M-1 Global, Gugenishvili was expected to compete again for IGF before the end of the year and would have returned to M-1 competition in 2015.

Sunday Perspective: UFC Fight Night Double Header results and analysis

Ovince St. Preux obviously deserves some credit. I think people are inclined not to take him seriously because of his age, how he looked in Strikeforce, and his sometimes strange decision making. To many, he has seen as a prospect gone semi-bust. But with only 2 losses since 2010, maybe he finally found a proper rhythm, and is simply a late bloomer? I'm not about to declare him a prospect who has suddenly found hair in strange places, but it's still a good win for him. Not anyone could have sidestepped that right hand and countered with the left like that.

During his downtime from rehabbing his knee injuries, Carlos Condit had a 3-day press tour in the Philippines which was capped off with a public workout and a meet and greet session at the Trinoma Activity Center. It was a simple demonstration where the former UFC and WEC welterweight champion hit the pads and did some grappling, but it still drew thousands of Filipino fight fans crazy about Mixed Martial Arts.

50 Boxing News: Sergey Kovalev Near Perfect in Shutout of Bernard Hopkins

WATCH the short right hook from @KrusherKovalev that sent @TheRealBHop to the canvas in round 1 - http://t.co/2CSxjHgmUK #ALIENvsKRUSHER — HBOboxing (@HBOboxing) November 9, 2014 The last time the great Bernard Hopkins was so thoroughly dominated, it was back in 1993 when he first fought Roy Jones Jr. Hopkins lost a lopsided unanimous decision that night, but he eventually became one of the greatest middleweights the sport would ever see. Tonight in Atlantic City, N.J., Hopkins was trounced for 12 rounds at the hands of Sergey Kovalev. Kovalev is regarded as one of few young lions who will carry the sport into the future, but he had yet to tackle someone Hopkins’ pedigree. Many boxing experts figured that the unbeaten Russian champion hadn’t truly proven himself and that Hopkins -- a man known for spoiling many young greats’ coming out parties -- would be too savvy and clever for Kovalev. As it turned out, the so-called experts had no clue what they were talking about as Hopkins did not win a single round on any of the three official ringside scorecards.
