UFC Lightweight Champ Conor McGregor Issued Boxing License in California

Conor McGregor might actually be serious about testing his mettle in the sweet science. According to multiple reports, the UFC lightweight champion has been granted a boxing license in California and has applied in multiple other states. MMAFighting.com first reported the news on Wednesday evening. The news figures to only intensify speculation that McGregor is eyeing a future showdown with retired boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. Those rumors have been ongoing for months, with McGregor recently calling for $100 million to box Mayweather during an appearance at 1 Oak Nightclub in New York. "Floyd's not ready for this. Much respect to Floyd, he's a solid businessman. What he has been able to do, he's a f—-ing animal at what he's been able to do but as far as real fighting, as far as true, pure unarmed combat — Floyd don't want none of this," McGregor said."He does not want none of this.” "He wants it under boxing rules. He wants a boxing match. He doesn't want a fight," McGregor continued. "Tell Floyd and Showtime, I'm coming.

5 can’t-miss fights at The Ultimate Fighter Finale

Check out five fights you won’t want to miss this Saturday night

Demetrious Johnson to Defend Title Against Tim Elliott Saturday at TUF 24 Finale

It’s been nearly five years since Demetrious Johnson last tasted defeat. Since then, “Mighty Mouse” has gone on such a tear in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and has proven that he has no equal inside the Octagon that his bosses had to resort to assembling a reality TV show in order to find a suitable man to be his next challenger. Granted, the UFC didn’t create “The Ultimate Fighter” just for Johnson, but the Las Vegas-based promotion flipped the script on the long-running reality show for Season 24 in that a collection of 16 flyweight champions for smaller promotions across the globe vied for a chance at whom many consider the best fighter on the planet pound-for-pound. After several weeks cooped up in the TUF house and winning four bouts, it was UFC veteran Tim Elliott who arose from the heap of titlists to try his hand at “Mighty Mouse.” Elliott opened his stint on TUF 24: Tournament of Champions by dominating Charlie Alaniz by first-round bulldog choke and then was nearly as flawless against Matt Schnell by subbing him in the first courtesy of a front-naked choke.

Cain Velasquez Has Surgery Scheduled for After UFC 207 Rematch vs. Fabricio Werdum

Cain Velasquez is no stranger to going under the knife, as a number of ailments and subsequent surgeries have sidelined the former UFC heavyweight champion over the years. That lengthy injury history is part of what compelled Velasquez to speak out as one of the figureheads of the Mixed Martial Arts Athletes Association, which was officially formed on Wednesday in hopes of seeking better treatment and compensation for fighters in the UFC. Velasquez is part of the five-man MMAAA board that also includes Georges St. Pierre , Donald Cerrone , Tim Kennedy and T.J. Dillashaw . “I want to talk about something that I know far too well. My first fight in the UFC was in 2008. Since that time, I’ve had seven surgeries,” Velasquez said during a conference call to announce the Association. The American Kickboxing Academy product later revealed that his next procedure will occur in the not-too-distant future. However, that surgery will not keep him out of his scheduled UFC 207 clash with Fabricio Werdum . Velasquez did not mention the nature of his latest injury.

Tonya Evinger Retains Invicta Title After Loss to Yana Kunitskaya Overturned to No-Contest

Tonya Evinger will remain the Invicta Fighting Championships bantamweight queen after her Nov. 18 submission loss to Yana Kunitskaya was changed to a no contest by the Missouri Office of Athletics. Evinger announced the news via Twitter on Thursday, and Invicta FC confirmed the result shortly thereafter in a statement. “History was made today!! Our sport has grown beyond what could have been imagined in such a short time. It’s truly amazing to witness the growth from a sport fueled by ego and ignorance to a sport that is now represented by professionals, from athletes to promoters to referees and state commissions,” Evinger wrote. “A sport that has matured enough to be able to change an outcome due to a mistake or misjudgment. Today I was informed by the Missouri Athletic Commission that my appeal was accepted and my last fight in KC Nov. 18 was overturned to a no contest. I will retain my world title and move forward awaiting the decisions for what’s next. Thanks to everyone for the support in this stressful situation, it’s a shame that it happened but I believe the sport has grown from this.

Holloway Says ‘Murky’ Featherweight Division Now Clear Heading Into UFC 206

Max Holloway isn’t too fond of current UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and he has no desire to speak about former king at 145 pounds, Conor McGregor . The red-hot Hawaiian will take on former WEC and UFC lightweight monarch Anthony Pettis in the main event of UFC 206 in a few weeks and that’s really all he is focused on. “I got Pettis in front of me,” Holloway said during Tuesday’s conference. “I’m not going to be looking past him. I’m not trying to stumble. Pettis is on my radar. I’m only focused on him and after Dec. 10, then I can answer these questions.” Holloway faced his fair share of questions regarding McGregor and Aldo on Tuesday. But while “Blessed” didn’t have much to say about the polarizing Irishman, he didn’t hold back on his criticism of “Scarface,” who said he is planning on defending his title in February or March. “We’ll see what happens; he’s been diagnosed with p—-y-itis,” he said in reference to Aldo’s injury history. “I have a tough task ahead of me and we’ll see when Jose Aldo wants the shot.

12
Anthony Pettis Focused on Max Holloway, Not Aldo or McGregor

Anthony Pettis is on a quest to eventually reclaim a world championship in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. On Dec. 10, he’ll have an opportunity to realize that dream when he takes on Max Holloway in the main event of UFC 206 in Toronto. The winner of the duel will be crowned the interim champion at featherweight. When the UFC announced that Pettis-Holloway would not only serve as the fill-in main event when reigning light heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier pulled out of his rematch with Anthony Johnson due to injury but would also be for yet another interim title, much of the MMA community groaned in displeasure. But to Pettis, he’s been around the block too many times to be bothered by what outsiders feel about his bosses’ decisions. “I don’t even look at that stuff anymore,” Pettis said on the UFC 206 conference call on Tuesday. “I have been a champion before. I know how this stuff works. We don’t decide who will fight for the title. Max and I already agreed to fight but now they put a title in front of us so now it’s time for us to fight.

Fact Check: Bellator 167

Darrion Caldwell wants a second look at the man who introduced him to defeat. “The Wolf” will meet Joe Taimanglo in a potential Bellator MMA bantamweight title eliminator, as they headline Bellator 167 on Saturday at the Winstar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma. Taimanglo stunned the previously unbeaten Caldwell in July, when he submitted the Rahway, New Jersey, native with a third-round guillotine choke and slowed his rise on the 135-pound ladder. Flawless outside of his failed encounter with Taimanglo, Caldwell has compiled a 6-1 record since arriving in Bellator a little less than three years ago. His run of success includes his March 4 rout of former two-division champion Joe Warren , a leading contender for “Beatdown of the Year.” Caldwell savaged Warren for some three minutes before choking him unconscious. He was thought to be on the brink of a title shot before Taimanglo inserted himself in the discussion. Taimanglo, 32, will enter the cage on a four-fight winning streak. His upset of Caldwell was preceded by consecutive victories over Sirwan Kakai , Antonio Duarte and Michael Parker .

We have reached the final episode on Season 24 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” where everything culminates with a battle between Tim Elliott and Hiromasa Ogikubo . The winner moves on to challenge Ultimate Fighting Championship flyweight titleholder Demetrious Johnson in “The Ultimate Fighter 24” Finale main event on Saturday at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. After a lengthy intro showcases the two finalists, Episode 12 begins at “The Ultimate Fighter” House, where coaches Joseph Benavidez and Henry Cejudo arrive with pizza and other food, as the fighters celebrate a terrific season. From there, Elliott and Ogikubo are allowed to FaceTime their families. As expected, emotions run high for the two flyweights. Once weigh-ins are complete, Benavidez takes his entire team to the Bootlegger Bistro for a meal on what is the final night of the show for everyone. The coach and his fighters toast one another and give speeches through which they reflect on their lives and their experiences during “The Ultimate Fighter.” Whether or not Cejudo did the same for his team, no one knows.

Opinion: Herb Dean’s Consistent Inconsistency

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. When asked who the best referee in mixed martial arts is, fans and media usually name one of three different men. “Big” John McCarthy is the most famous, long-tenured, outspoken referee in the game. He also has the most high-profile certification course for MMA officials and is the most willing to answer Twitter questions about how the sport’s rules work. Hell, he’s even stepped up to help a fighter get one of his bad calls overturned . Yes, McCarthy rubs some people the wrong way, and he’s made some strangely contradictory calls, but he’s more of a presence than anyone else and is the first person fans will think of among referees, much less pick the best one. A lot of the most hardcore fans and media members, especially those who relish watching overseas cards on UFC Fight Pass, may pick Marc Goddard . He’s authoritative and his style of talking to the fighters very loudly is easy to notice on TV, so he jumps out in a way that other don’t.

Legacy Fighting Alliance Debuts with Bantamweight Title Bout on Jan. 13

A matchup of champions Legacy Fighting Championship and Resurrection Fighting Alliance titlists will highlight the inaugural Legacy Fighting Alliance card on Jan. 13. Legacy FC king Steven Peterson will meet RFA ruler Leandro Higo in a bantamweight championship unification bout in the LFA 1 main event at the Bomb Factory in Dallas. The card will air on AXS-TV at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. Legacy FC and RFA announced a merger of the two promotions earlier this year after Legacy President Mick Maynard was hired by the UFC to fill a matchmaking position. Peterson enters the matchup on a six-fight winning streak. The Plano, Texas, native last appeared at Legacy FC 56, where he submitted Manny Vazquez with a rear-naked choke 3:08 into the fourth round to capture 135-pound gold. Peterson is 14-4 as a professional, with 10 victories coming inside the distance. Higo, meanwhile, is riding a seven-fight winning streak that includes three straight finishes under the RFA banner. Most recently, the Brazilian submitted Joey Miolla with a first-round rear-naked choke at RFA 37.

Skrillex on Apple Music

Sonny Moore found club and mainstream stardom beginning in 2008, when he swapped his gig as the frontman in post-hardcore band From First to Last for the dancefloor-oriented project Skrillex. He originally used the name for live DJ sets, but in 2009 the project moved into the studio with Skrillex remixing the likes of Lady Gaga ("Bad Romance") and Snoop Dogg ("Sensual Seduction"). In 2010, the self-released digital download EP My Name Is Skrillex appeared, combining the Benny Benassi and Deadmau5 styles of electro with the same type of over the top samples and giant noise of electronica acts like the Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim. Moore signed to Deadmau5's Mau5trap label in 2010, where he released his second EP, Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites, along with the club hit "Kill Everybody." If topping the club charts didn't prove the producer had arrived, a trio of Grammy Awards in 2011 helped considerably, including Best Dance/Electronica Album for Scary Monsters and Best Dance Recording for the title track. He also made an appearance on the revived Beavis & Butthead television series, and collaborated with the surviving members of the Doors on a single called "Breakin' a Sweat.

‘King Mo’ Lawal: Fighters Association Reps ‘About to Get Finessed F---ing With’ Bjorn Rebney

Muhammed Lawal is still no fan of Bjorn Rebney. Rebney was introduced in an advisory capacity for the newly formed Mixed Martial Arts Athletes Association (MMAAA) on Wednesday, and he often took the lead on a conference call when it came to explaining the long-term plan of the association. The MMAAA is seeking better pay and benefits for past and present UFC fighters and will be headed by a five-man board of Georges St. Pierre , Donald Cerrone , Tim Kennedy , Cain Velasquez and T.J. Dillashaw . While Rebney will not have a say in the final decision-making process, Lawal warned the group against aligning themselves with the former Bellator MMA CEO in a post on his Instagram account. “U got 5 great fighters standin by 1 big dick rider on the far left,” Lawal wrote. “These boys are about to get finessed f—-in’ wit him. People learn the hard way tho.” That very public animosity dates back to Bellator MMA’s lone pay-per-view offering on May 17 2014, when “King Mo” had some choice words for the then promotion CEO.

Will the sport of mixed martial arts change forever on Wednesday? Some major MMA players think so. Former Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholders Georges St. Pierre , T.J. The five fighters will be joined on the Wednesday conference call by Bellator MMA founder and former CEO Bjorn Rebney. The conference call is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT on Nov. 30. Apart from Cerrone, who is represented by Nascar driver Kevin Harvick’s KHI Management, the remaining four fighters scheduled to appear on Wednesday’s call are represented by Creative Artists Agency (CAA), the chief rival of new UFC ownership group WME-IMG in the world of talent management. Notably, it is a roster of fighters -- especially Cerrone, Kennedy and St. Pierre -- that have been vocal regarding the need for a fighters union in the UFC.
