Anthony Pettis wandered into oncoming traffic and has the tread marks to prove it. Max Holloway ran over “Showtime” in the UFC 206 headliner on Saturday at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, as he stopped the Milwaukee native with third-round punches to capture the interim Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight title. Finished for the first time in his 25-fight career, Pettis succumbed to blows 4:50 into Round 3. Everything went according to plan for Holloway. The 25-year-old Hawaiian withstood Pettis’ expected onslaught of kicks, countered beautifully throughout and pieced together damaging multi-punch combinations to the body and head. Holloway outstruck the former lightweight champion in every round, increasing his output as time wore on. According to FightMetric data, he landed 23 of his 58 strikes in the first round, 29 of 66 in the second and 46 of 88 in the third, where he blew away Pettis with a body kick and follow-up punches on the fence. UFC 206 Statistical Matchup Analysis: Holloway vs. Pettis

The interim Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight title will be up for grabs in the UFC 206 headliner on Saturday at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Though it took an injury to the original main event and the invention of an unnecessary interim belt, the fight between Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis , two of the UFC’s most exciting fighters, is deserving of the spotlight. Holloway, who turned 25 six days before the fight, is riding a division-record nine-fight winning streak. His last loss was against former featherweight king Conor McGregor in 2013. Since then, six of his nine wins have not needed the judges’ stamp, even as he has faced increasingly higher-ranked competition. He was last in action in June, when he took a unanimous decision from onetime title challenger Ricardo Lamas . This will be Holloway’s second fight of 2016, making it only the second time in his UFC career that he fought less than four times in a calendar year. On the other side of the cage will be Pettis, the former UFC and World Extreme Cagefighting lightweight champion.

By the Numbers: UFC 206

Max Holloway doesn’t necessarily have the hardware he wants, but his place in the featherweight division can no longer be denied. The Hawaiian claimed the interim 145-pound belt with a third-round technical knockout victory over Anthony Pettis in the UFC 206 headliner at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on Saturday night. The victory sets up a future showdown with reigning featherweight titlist Jose Aldo at a future date. Holloway was hardly the evening’s only star, however. Cub Swanson , Donald Cerrone and Doo Ho Choi were some of the event’s other luminaries, and the final figures reflect the memorable night of fights. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 206 ( online betting ), with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com. 10: Consecutive UFC triumphs for Holloway, the sixth-longest winning streak in promotion history behind Anderson Silva (16), Jon Jones (13), Georges St. Pierre (12), Demetrious Johnson (11) and Royce Gracie (11). 12: Victories in UFC competition for Holloway, tying him with Chad Mendes for third most at featherweight in UFC/WEC history.

'Cowboy' Cerrone reveals what happened in his meeting with Dana White

"1,000-percent receptive, definitely," Cerrone said about White. "It was always in a good place. It reminds me of when you get in trouble with your dad and they don’t ground you, they just tell you how disappointed they are in you, which is even worse. So that's kind of what he did to me and he's just like 'you let me down,' it's not so much let him down but just kind of a slap in his face.

Max Holloway bashes Jose Aldo, sends message to Conor McGregor following title win

"This is my golden ticket. That mother (expletive) is always getting hurt and pulling out, it might as well have been the real belt," Holloway said about Aldo. "Most true fans know the story. Conor's (McGregor) coach even said I'm the best 145'er in the world and then Jose's over here saying he wants to retire, unretire, then he gets the belt, now he has the belt, now he wants to go up a weight class instead of fight so I don't know.

Conor McGregor parodied on 'Saturday Night Live' with John Cena

Former UFC women's champion Ronda Rousey actually became the first mixed martial artist to host the long running show earlier this year, but McGregor would certainly be a big land for "Saturday Night Live" if they could sway him to appear.

22
UFC 206: Donald Cerrone Just Walk Off Head Kick KO’d Matt Brown

Brown was patient with his attack and eventually dropped Cerrone a minute into the second round, but couldn’t get the job done as Cerrone was able to recover and get back to his feet within seconds. Cerrone fired back with another stiff headkick of his own which dropped Brown, and just like Cerrone moments before he got right back up to his feet and landed a shot of his own to even the score. Cerrone chased Brown down with lefts and rights, but Brown circled out of danger and made his way back to the center of the octagon where the two went tit-for-tat both landing stiff shots. The body strikes of Brown started to build up, but they didn’t seem to impact the conditioning of Cerrone in the least.

Doo-Ho Choi plans to fight for featherweight title in 2017 | BJPenn.com

Back in 2014, Choi entered the Octagon with a 12-1 professional record that saw him enter the UFC on a 10-fight win streak, with all but two of the wins coming by way of KO/TKO. When he stepped into the Octagon for the first time at ‘UFC Fight Night: Austin’ in 2014, it took ‘The Korean Superboy’ just 18 seconds to earn himself his 11th straight win, and his first UFC win, in the form of a first round TKO against Juan Puig. Unfortunately, it would be an entire year before Choi returned to the Octagon, however when he did, it was in front of his hometown fans in South Korea. Choi didn’t disappoint, and rose to the occasion as he KOd TUF alumni Sam Sicilia in just over 90 seconds. With fight fans starting to take notice of his impressive striking skills, Choi was booked for a fight with MMA veteran, BJJ ace Thiago Tavares. Choi once again left fight fans in awe as he picked up yet another first round KO win.

Despite MW Success, Gastelum Believes He Deserves a Top Contender at 170 Pounds

Kelvin Gastelum isn’t giving up the dream at 170 pounds. Even after garnering an impressive third-round technical knockout victory against the notoriously sturdy Tim Kennedy at 185 pounds at UFC 206 , Gastelum still has his sights set on title contention at welterweight. “He's [Kennedy] very durable and I knew I was in for a dogfight,” Gastelum said. “But I was confident in my preparation and I was confident in my ability.  If they give me a fight at middleweight that I want, I will stay at 185. If no fight interests me, I will drop to 170 and fight a No. 1 contender. I want a No. 1 contender and believe I deserve a No. 1 contender.” Gastelum was badly overweight and failed to even attend weigh-ins prior to a proposed welterweight clash against Donald Cerrone at UFC 205. While Gastelum avoided a six-month suspension by paying a $2,000 fine to the New York State Athletic Commission, the last minute cancellation led UFC President Dana White to declare that Gastelum would never fight at 170 pounds in the Octagon again.

The Sixth Round: What we learned and what's next after UFC 206: Holloway vs. Pettis

The UFC really needs to consider opening at a 125-pound women's division. Valerie Letourneau had another brutal weight cut on Friday and then put on an abysmal performance on Saturday probably in large part because her body was still recovering from sucking out every ounce of moisture she could spare. Letourneau is just one of a handful of fighters on the UFC roster who could benefit from a women's flyweight division. Here's a novel idea as well — maybe instead of rushing to declare a champion, let some fights play out for the next year before determining the top four seeds in a tournament to determine the best 125-pounder in the world.

Watch: @budcrawford402 earns the TKO in Round 8. #CrawfordMolina https://t.co/4091keqzo6 — HBOboxing (@HBOboxing) December 11, 2016 Terence Crawford was at it again on Saturday night as the undefeated young phenom dominated John Molina Jr. in the main event of an HBO-televised event from the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb. Crawford (30-0, 21 KOs) seized control early and began to pick Molina apart from the outside. Molina never stopped trying to get inside and make it a dirty fight, but “Bud” was nearly flawless as he popped him with punches from all angles and slowly broke his will. As the fight wore on, Crawford became stronger and began hurting the challenger. Finally, after toying with Molina (29-7, 23 KOs) Crawford unloaded a barrage of punches until referee Mark Nelson stopped the abuse at 2:32 of the eighth. Ray Beltran (32-7-1, 20 KOs) slammed a picture-perfect left hook into the jaw of Mason Menard (32-2, 24 KOs), ending the fight 51 seconds into the seventh. The win gave Beltran a pair of regional lightweight bouts.

Cirkunov, Aubin-Mercier among big prelim winners at UFC 206

CIRKUNOV vs. KRYLOV The eighth consecutive win by Toronto’s Misha Cirkunov was his biggest to date in the UFC, as he submitted Ukraine’s Nikita Krylov Saturday at Air Canada Centre in a highly anticipated UFC 206 showdown of light heavyweight contenders. Krylov was busy with his striking as the bout began, particularly with his kicks, but Cirkunov was unbothered as he put steady pressure on his opponent, scoring two takedowns before Krylov answered with one of his own. Cirkunov swept his way out of trouble and rose to his feet, landing a hard left hand that dropped Krylov. Opinion: The Silliness and Beauty of Interim Title Fights

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * It sucks that the rematch between Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson fell apart, nixing UFC 206’s original headliner. With that said, unlike most doomed Ultimate Fighting Championship main events that fall apart and leave behind a weak and destitute lineup, the card on Saturday in Toronto is not only a fantastic mixed martial arts card, but to my mind, the disintegration of Cormier-Johnson 2 has created a much larger, greater good for MMA. In the wake of Conor McGregor ’s lightweight title capture and the very obvious fact that he would never return to 145 pounds, it goes without saying that the UFC would have stripped the Irishman of his featherweight crown eventually. Maybe it even would’ve done it prior to UFC 206 anyhow. Regardless, the promotion’s hand was forced when Cormier-Johnson 2 was nixed due to Cormier’s adductor injury.
