Muhammed Lawal and the Cures for MMA’s Ills

Muhammed Lawal has accomplished much as a combat sports athlete. He was a three-time NCAA All-American wrestler at the University of Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University, nearly made the 2008 United States Olympic team, captured the Strikeforce light heavyweight crown upon transitioning to mixed martial arts and won the 2015 Rizin Fighting Federation heavyweight grand prix. Bellator MMA gold, however, has thus far eluded him. Lawal arrived in Bellator some four years ago and has seemingly been on the cusp of a championship ever since. The Murfreesboro, Tennessee, native has not yet made it over the hump, undercut by everything from a shocking upset to questionable judging decisions. Lawal has grown to expect the unexpected. The 35-year-old was on a seven-fight winning streak in advance of his Bellator 154 battle with Phil Davis on May 14. He lost a unanimous decision in a fight many observers felt he won -- five of the six media members sampled by MMADecisions.com scored it for Lawal -- and looked on as Davis went on to defeat Liam McGeary for Bellator’s light heavyweight championship.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - From Albany to Toronto

Any MMA fan could have told you there was a vast difference in quality and top-10 relevance between the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s UFC Fight Night 102 card on Dec. 9 in Albany, New York, and the promotion’s UFC 206 event on Dec. 10 in Toronto, even with the latter having its original main event -- Daniel Cormier - Anthony Johnson 2 -- fall apart due to Cormier’s adductor injury. Yet here we are on the other side of the UFC’s doubleheader, and both aforementioned shows have impacted this update of the Sherdog.com rankings. Of course, UFC 206 led the way in this department. While the dissolution of Cormier-Johnson 2 forced -- or irrationally compelled -- the UFC to strip Conor McGregor , make Jose Aldo full featherweight champion and line up Max Holloway - Anthony Pettis as the interim title fight main event, Hawaii’s Holloway was positively sublime throughout the week in his media and fan engagements before taking to the Octagon and simply smashing the former UFC lightweight champion. Not only did Holloway’s sensational striking victory give him the biggest win of his career and a small-if-illegitimate slice of the UFC featherweight title, it sees him break through to the top three of his division in these rankings.

Jon Jones Taps Dan Henderson, Miesha Tate Tops Jessica Eye at Submission Underground 2

It was not exactly what mixed martial arts or even grappling fans envisioned when UFC 151 was announced, but nonetheless, in a pairing of MMA legends on Sunday in Portland, Oregon, Jon Jones stepped into the cage against Dan Henderson and made him submit in the headliner of Submission Underground 2. After several minutes of well-received theatrics aimed to entertain the crowd, “Jonny Bones” put Henderson on the mat and passed his guard, eventually mounting his fellow all-time MMA great and cinching up an arm-triangle choke that forced “Hendo” to tap at the 6:39 mark. The former Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight king, Jones, 29, is currently serving a one-year suspension related to his positive test for clomiphene and Letrozol ahead of his slated rematch with Daniel Cormier at UFC 200 in July, while the 46-year-old Henderson gave a nod towards potential retirement after his Oct. 8 loss to Michael Bisping in a middleweight title challenge at UFC 204 . The pair was previously scheduled to compete at the infamous, canceled UFC 151 event on Sept.

Opinion: A Fighter Forged from Conflict

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * You’ve probably never been to Waianae, Hawaii. Though it is only 30 miles west of Waikiki, they are worlds apart. With a population of around 13,000, there are more tourists on the island on any given day than people who actually live in Waianae. A little more than 8,000 of its residents are of Native Hawaiian ancestry -- which is not the same as simply being from Hawaii -- making Waianae one of the most Hawaiian places on the island. The ethnic composition of the area is a small but important part of its reputation. At the heart of the ahupuaʻa, or land division, since Waianae can hardly be called a city, is the high school. Waianae High School has held the dubious distinction of having the highest dropout rate in the state for over a decade. Around 30 percent of the students drop out, and nearly all of them are male; graduating classes are around 85 percent female.

Saulo Ribeiro will help you to pass guards by @graciemag

These images were shot in Brazil back in 2001! Look the tactics of Saulo Ribeiro showing how to pass brother Xande's guard. He will hold one side of Xande's pants and will move immediately to the other side, in a circle, this way getting rid of Xande's hooks. The cross grip on Xande's collar is important, both for putting his back on the ground during the movement and also because it will help to connect with a choke afterwards. Both grips (collar and pants) are also crucial to pin Xande's hip, preventing him to escape it and be more loose otherwise. Saulo is and always was a master on guard pass. MMA’s Greats of the States | North Carolina: Derek Brunson

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it.

Cole Miller Is Really Upset With The UFC, Here’s The Latest

“I’m not just angry, but hurt a little bit, too. Like, gut checked. Really, that’s what they think of all this effort and hard work that I have put in? And it’s not just the effort you put in for eight weeks, but the effort that I put in for 13 years and weight weeks. All that stuff is compounded. I have spent 10 years in the Octagon for Zuffa. I think I’ve gotten three surgeries from fights I did in the Octagon, I don’t know how many stitches, probably three broken bones that didn’t get operated on. How much blood did I shed on that canvas and shed from other people on that canvas? And that’s what they think about me? And maybe I thought I was hot-headed at the moment, so I calmed down and thought there may be some rationale behind it. But, then I start feeling gut checked because they just straight ignored you, tossed you away and didn’t answer when I tried to reach out to them or anything. They couldn’t give me a reason.”

http://www.cagepotato.com/tyron-woodley-calls-out-nick-diaz-for-big-money-fight-at-ufc-209/

You can’t blame the man for wanting a big money fight. The UFC has already changed the game and now you’re going to get mad at a fighter for playing it? Obviously the UFC and it’s new owners are going more for entertainment value rather than trying to further the brand as a sport. If Tyron has the belt and proposes an entertaining fight, there shouldn’t be anything wrong with that. Let’s face it, it’s a great matchup that most fight fans would pay to see. In the age of Brock Lesnar comebacks and CM Punk debacles the rules have changed.  If you can garner enough interest through social media then there’s a very real possibility the fight will happen. Don’t hate the playa, hate the game.

By the Numbers: UFC 206

Max Holloway doesn’t necessarily have the hardware he wants, but his place in the featherweight division can no longer be denied. The Hawaiian claimed the interim 145-pound belt with a third-round technical knockout victory over Anthony Pettis in the UFC 206 headliner at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on Saturday night. The victory sets up a future showdown with reigning featherweight titlist Jose Aldo at a future date. Holloway was hardly the evening’s only star, however. Anthony Pettis wandered into oncoming traffic and has the tread marks to prove it. Max Holloway ran over “Showtime” in the UFC 206 headliner on Saturday at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, as he stopped the Milwaukee native with third-round punches to capture the interim Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight title. Finished for the first time in his 25-fight career, Pettis succumbed to blows 4:50 into Round 3. Everything went according to plan for Holloway. The 25-year-old Hawaiian withstood Pettis’ expected onslaught of kicks, countered beautifully throughout and pieced together damaging multi-punch combinations to the body and head. Holloway outstruck the former lightweight champion in every round, increasing his output as time wore on. According to FightMetric data, he landed 23 of his 58 strikes in the first round, 29 of 66 in the second and 46 of 88 in the third, where he blew away Pettis with a body kick and follow-up punches on the fence. UFC 206 Weigh-in Results: Anthony Pettis Misses Weight

It’s been a while since the Ultimate Fighting Championship planted its flag in the soil of Toronto, Canada, but on Saturday night, the Las Vegas-based promotion will invade the Air Canada Centre. UFC 206 ( current odds ) promises to be a thrilling card from top to bottom, though the original main event of Daniel Cormier vs. Anthony Johnson has been scrapped. However, the card’s drama does not end there. Rising contender Max Holloway was set to collide with former World Extreme Cagefighting and UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis in a showdown for the newly-shuffled “interim” featherweight belt. At Friday’s weigh-ins, those plans were altered when Pettis missed the mark by three pounds. The fight will continue with only Holloway (145) eligible to become interim champion. Should Pettis win Saturday; no interim champion will be crowned. Also of note at Friday’s weigh-ins, Rustam Khabilov (158.5) came in heavy for his clash with Jason Saggo (155). As well, Valerie Letourneau (*117.

UFC Fight Night 102 ‘Lewis vs. Abdurakhimov’ Results: Play-by-Play & Updates

Derrick Lewis vs. Shamil Abdurakhimov Round 1 Referee Dan Miragliotta is the third man in the cage for tonight's heavyweight main event. Lewis starts out in the center of the cage, slowly pressing outward toward Abdurakhimov, who cuts short angles around the perimeter. Abdurakhimov catches hold of Lewis' first kick and takes the "Black Beast" to the ground in the center of the cage. Straight to side control goes Abdurakhimov, leaning left to right across Lewis' body to frame up a keylock. Lewis rolls to his left, instantly relieving pressure on the arm and allowing him to stand up. Abdurakhimov stays with him, holding a rear waistlock until he's able to push Lewis against the fence. Lewis throws a knee, has the leg caught but keeps his balance and stays standing, while Abdurakhimov goes back to muscling him against the wall. Abdurakhimov gets double underhooks as they hit the midway point of round one, but Lewis pushes him away with a forearm to the face. With 90 seconds on the clock, Lewis initiates a clinch on the fence, but he's quickly spun around by Abdurakhimov. The big men split with one minute on the clock, but Abdurakhimov comes back for a late takedown and finishes the round in full mount.
