Bellator 191: By The Numbers

Bellator MMA no doubt sees untapped potential in Michael McDonald . The oft-injured 26-year-old bantamweight will make his promotional debut against Peter Ligier in the Bellator 191 main event on Friday at Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle, England. His career beset by a rash of injuries, McDonald has fought just twice in the last four years. The Oakdale MMA representative last competed at UFC Fight Night 91 in July 2016, when he was on the receiving end of a brutal first-round knockout from the notoriously vicious and heavy-handed John Lineker . Soon after, McDonald parted ways with the Ultimate Fighting Championship . Ligier, meanwhile, enters the cage with the wind of a three-fight winning streak in his sails. The 31-year-old Frenchman last fought at European Beatdown 2 on Oct. 14, when he claimed a unanimous decision over Alexander Sasha Pirev at Mons Arena in Mons, Belgium. Ligier has secured five of his eight professional victories by knockout, technical knockout or submission. With the McDonald-Ligier showdown on the marquee, here are some of the numbers of intrigue surrounding Bellator 91: 3: Straight losses for Valerie Letourneau , who makes her organizational debut opposite Kate Jackson in the co-main event.

Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Swanson vs. Ortega’

Brian Ortega has played a variety of roles since joining the Ultimate Fighting Championship roster in 2014, steroid cheat and rehabilitated prospect among them. Add featherweight contender to the list. Ortega submitted longtime Jackson-Wink MMA standout Cub Swanson with a sensational second-round guillotine choke in the UFC Fight Night 123 main event on Saturday at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. Swanson conceded defeat 3:22 into Round 2 and watched the equity associated with his four-fight winning streak dwindle to nothing. Despite disadvantages in the speed and experience departments, Ortega marched ahead like a man with a plan. Swanson was superior in the standup exchanges but not so dominant that it forced “T-City” to alter his course. Ortega nearly sealed the deal with a brabo choke in the closing seconds of the first round. He returned in the second to finish what he started. A Gracie jiu-jitsu black belt with a flair for the dramatic, Ortega has finished each of his last five opponents: Swanson, Renato Carneiro , Clay Guida , Diego Brandao and Thiago Tavares .

Mark Hunt Draws Curtis Blaydes at UFC 221 in Perth |

Though Blaydes lost to current No. 1 contender Francis Ngannou in his first trip to the Octagon, he has since reeled off four consecutive victories. A win over the likes of Hunt would catapult him into the division’s upper echelon.

UFC Fight Night 123 Post-Mortem: Coming-Out Party

UFC Fight Night 123 on Saturday marked the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s first-ever event in Fresno, California, and gave rise to a number of exciting fights, saw new blood entering the ranks of the elite and bore witness to an instant “Knockout of the Year” contender. With those highlights as the backdrop, it seems safe to assume this will not be the last time the UFC visits the Central Valley. In the headliner, Brian Ortega walked in as a promising up-and-comer and walked out as a full-fledged title contender in a division filled with bona fide killers. A Future Star Shines Brightest The main event between Ortega and Cub Swanson was a high-stakes confrontation for both men. Swanson went into the match having won four fights in a row and made it a point to declare he was looking to secure a title shot with a win over “T-City.” To make matters even dicier, it was the final fight on Swanson’s contract. He felt confident letting it all play out before entering into negotiations with the UFC. Known as an exciting finisher throughout his career, Swanson wanted to let his performance in the cage do the talking.

Carbajal: What’s Cub Swanson’s Next Move?

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Cub Swanson fulfilled the final fight on his Ultimate Fighting Championship contract at UFC Fight Night 123 on Saturday in Fresno, California. After it was over and even though Swanson lost to a promising up-and-comer in Brian Ortega , UFC President Dana White told the perennial featherweight contender: “Let’s get a deal done.” It was another sign that Swanson is not your average, ordinary competitor. Usually, fighters are not encouraged to negotiate new contracts in the immediate aftermath of a high-profile defeat. Swanson was on a four-fight winning streak before being beaten by the undefeated Ortega . He troubled Ortega with timing, speed and unorthodox angles during their standup exchanges. Both featherweights hold black belts in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, but Ortega’s choke attacks turned the tide in his favor. He nearly finished it at the end of the first round before closing out Swanson in Round 2.

By the Numbers: UFC Fight Night 123

Brian Ortega isn’t someone you want near your neck. Outgunned on the feet by Cub Swanson in the UFC Fight Night 123 headliner, Ortega lured his opponent into his realm, winning via guillotine choke 3:22 into the second round of their bout in Fresno, Calif., on Saturday night. “T-City” nearly finished the fight with a guillotine in round one, but Swanson, after winning most of the frame, was saved by the bell. He wasn’t nearly as lucky in the second stanza, as Ortega continues to establish himself as a rising star in the featherweight division. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night 123, with statistics courtesy of 5: Consecutive victories for Ortega, tying him with Darren Elkins for the second longest active winning streak in the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s featherweight division. Max Holloway is No. 1 with 11 straight triumphs. 5: Consecutive finishes in the Octagon for Ortega, tying him with Stipe Miocic and Maribek Taisumov for the second longest active finishing streak in the promotion.

Jason Knight Addresses Finger-Biting Incident vs. Gabriel Benitez at UFC Fight Night 123

Nothing went as planned for Jason Knight at UFC Fight Night 123 . Not only did the 25-year-old Mississippi native lose a clear-cut unanimous decision to underdog Gabriel Benitez in the evening’s co-main event in Fresno, Calif., but he looked like something of a dirty fighter in doing so. In the opening round, Knight was deducted a point for biting his opponent while attempting a takedown. One point for...biting? #UFCFresno — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) December 10, 2017 “He bit my thumb, my finger,” Benitez said in a post-fight media scrum. “I tried to grab the chin, and he bit two times. In the fight, this happens. … No [I don’t think he’s dirty], because in this sport everything happens. It was a mistake. It’s just a sport.” While Knight doesn’t deny biting his opponent, he claims there was a little bit more going on than Benitez simply attempting to grab his chin during the incident. “[Yeah] I accidentally bit the dude this weekend,” Knight wrote on Twitter. “[You] put your fingers in my mouth, I’ll bite them too.

Opinion: Mixed Feelings for the Middleweight Division

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Of all the memes that MMA has given us, none is more perpetually useful than Nate Diaz ’ classic line after he defeated Conor McGregor : “I’m not surprised, mother [expletives].” This was the precise feeling I and no doubt many others had when it was announced that Georges St. Pierre had vacated the Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight title. At 33 days, his championship reign would rank as the sixth shortest celebrity marriage , a comparative metric far more fitting than other UFC title runs. St. Pierre’s decision to vacate the title caps a strange 18 months for the middleweight belt. The top of the division has been on a meandering journey ever since Michael Bisping knocked out Luke Rockhold in June 2016. That was bizarre enough on its own. It included what has got to be cleanest single punch of Bisping’s UFC career, and it was on short notice against a man who had thoroughly demolished him before.

Dana White: 'Unbelievable' Brian Ortega won't get UFC title shot before Frankie Edgar

“Without a doubt, this kid’s obviously the future,” White told MMAjunkie following UFC Fight Night 123. “Cub Swanson looked incredible tonight. … The problem is, this Ortega kid, if he even puts his hands on you man – and he had him in the first round, and I’ve never seen a guy up in a guillotine choke like that and lets go, repositions his hands, and gets the choke. Against a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt too. Unbelievable. Incredible performance that definitely puts this kid on the map.”

Edmonton Bans Combat Sports for 1 Year Following Death of Tim Hague in Boxing Match

The Edmonton City Council has enacted a one-year ban on all combat sports following the death of Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Tim Hague in a boxing match on June 16. The news was announced in a release on Friday. The bylaw, which will temporarily halt the issuing of licenses or event permits for combat sports in Edmonton, takes effect on Saturday and will remain in place until Dec. 31, 2018. The decision comes after a third-party review into the Hague’s death. An in-camera update on the review was given to the City Council on Friday. The final report on Hague’s death is expected to be released to the public no later than Dec. 14. “We anticipate the release of the report into the tragic death of Mr. Hague and a continued conversation about the proper role of the municipality in the field of combative sports,” Rob Smyth, Deputy City Manager of Citizen Services at the City of Edmonton, said in the release. Hague suffered a second-round knockout loss to former Canadian Football League talent Adam Braidwood in a bout held under the KO Boxing banner at the Shaw Conference Center on June 16.
