Michael Bisping, Beyond the Villain

Michael Bisping is the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s perpetual bridesmaid, a long-tenured, recognizable star who always seems to fall at least one bout short in his painstaking quest for promotional gold. Still, as he approaches his 37th birthday, it is hard to deny that the brash Englishman has carved out a career that is as successful as any non-titleholder within the Las Vegas-based organization. Case in point: Although a minor elbow injury recently forced Bisping to withdraw from a scheduled clash against Robert Whittaker at UFC 193 , it quickly became apparent that the middleweight could have the first half of his 2016 calendar booked whenever he desired. As he drives to the “UFC Tonight” studios for a co-hosting gig on a late September afternoon in California, Bisping reveals that he has appeared on the radar of former light heavyweight champion and middleweight title challenger Lyoto Machida , a report which will air on Fox Sports 1 that night. Two days later, while serving as an ambassador at a fight card in Dagestan, ex-185-pound king Anderson Silva hints that he is going to make his return from a year-long suspension against Bisping on a pay-per-view card in Curitiba, Brazil, sometime in the first quarter of 2016.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Lightweight Spotlight

One week after the UFC featherweight and middleweight divisions were on display in Las Vegas, the lightweights took center stage in Orlando, Florida, for UFC on Fox 17 . Rafael dos Anjos capitalized on his moment in the spotlight, as the 155-pound champion needed only 66 seconds to beat the title dreams out of Donald Cerrone before a national audience. Dos Anjos, who took the belt from Anthony Pettis in a March upset, has looked unstoppable in his last five fights and is quickly making a name for himself as one of the finest pound-for-pound fighters in the world. The champ retains his No. 1 ranking in the lightweight division with this update, while Cerrone remains at No. 3 thanks to the sensational eight-fight winning streak which earned him the title shot. On the same card, Nate Diaz put on a show in his three-round duel with Michael Johnson , picking apart and taunting the Blackzilians representative for the better part of 15 minutes. Diaz’s long range and relentless boxing carried him to a unanimous decision and may have put him in line for a bout with new featherweight champ Conor McGregor , who has expressed interest in moving up a weight class.

The Walkmen: UFC on Fox 17

Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight titleholder Rafael dos Anjos has an undeniable warrior spirit, but he did not have to use too much of it in his rematch with Donald Cerrone in the UFC on Fox 17 headliner on Saturday at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida. Dos Anjos made his walk to the Octagon to the tune of MC Sapao’s “O Grito de um Guerreiro” -- which translates from Portuguese to “Cry of a Warror” -- and proceeded to finish Cerrone just 1:06 into the opening frame. Kid Rock’s “Cowboy” brought Cerrone to the cage. He crumbled after a dos Anjos body kick and shielded himself from the champion’s onslaught until referee Herb Dean stopped the action. The victory was dos Anjos’ fifth straight inside the Octagon and snapped Cerrone’s eight-fight winning streak. Meanwhile, former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos made his entrance to the “Rocky” theme song “Gonna Fly Now,” by Bill Conti. However, his performance was far from Rocky Balboa-esque against onetime Strikeforce titleholder Alistair Overeem . The Dutchman landed a left hook on dos Santos’ chin and sent him crashing to the canvas in the second round.

Cheick Kongo meets unbeaten Augusto Sakai at Bellator 150 in Kansas

Kongo has won three of his past four fights. In June, he took a unanimous decision from former Bellator champ Alexander Volkov. That got him back in the win column after a split-decision loss to Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal in February. Prior to that, he had a TKO of Eric Smith at Bellator 120 and a submission of Lavar Johnson at Bellator 123.

UFC on Fox 17 Prelims: Charles Oliveira Guillotine Choke Taps Myles Jury

Charles Oliveira gave Myles Jury a reason to reconsider his decision to invade the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s featherweight division. Oliveira -- who missed weight for the match by more than four pounds -- became the first man to finish Jury, as the Macaco Gold Team standout submitted him with a first-round guillotine choke at UFC on Fox 17 on Saturday at the Amway Center in Orlando, Fla. Jury (15-2, 6-2 UFC) tapped out 3:05 into round one, his welcome at 145 pounds a rude one. The 26-year-old Oliveira (21-5, 9-5 UFC) executed a takedown inside the first 90 seconds, wheeled to the Power MMA Team rep’s back and ensnared Jury in the guillotine when he rose to his feet. Oliveira connected his hands, wrapped the still-standing American in full guard and finished it there. Related » UFC on Fox 17 Round-by-Round Scoring Underdog Marquardt KOs Dollaway Former Pancrase and Strikeforce champion Nate Marquardt knocked out C.B. Thoughts & Shots: UFC on Fox 17

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Rafael dos Anjos ended Donald Cerrone ’s eight-fight winning streak and cemented himself as one of the most destructive forces in MMA today with his 66-second dismantling of “Cowboy” in the UFC on Fox 17 main event on Saturday. The rematch of their summer 2013 encounter, also won by dos Anjos, was another one-sided affair but this one did not go the full 15 minutes. Dos Anjos pounded the challenger to the body and seized the advantage. He hammered away at his retreating foe until referee Herb Dean intervened to give him the win and simultaneously halt Cerrone’s title dreams. The impressive victory thrusts dos Anjos into the top-five pound-for-pound debate. The lightweight titleholder was quick to lament the fact that he has yet to enjoy the rewards most champions reap, at least to this point. He told me after the fight that he hopes he hears from both Reebok and Monster Energy Drinks, two sponsors that have eluded him thus far. Now I know it can be tough for some foreign fighters to get sponsors here in North America, but come on people, this guy has put together an amazing run and deserves some love.

Conor McGregor responds to call outs: 'I want them to beg me'

Conor McGregor certainly has a flair for the dramatic and responded in kind to three different fighters calling him out following wins at the final UFC card in 2015.

Luis Ortiz Pulls Off Mild Shocker in Stopping Bryant Jennings

VERONA, New York -- Luis Ortiz wanted to keep it as secret as possible. But how long could he do that for? The 36-year-old Cuban expatriate heavyweight was about to have the biggest fight of his life. The problem was Ortiz wasn’t able to stand, let alone fight. Ortiz was bed ridden with the flu for six of the last 10 days leading up to his scheduled 12-round fight against Bryant Jennings on Saturday on HBO’s “Boxing After Dark” from the Turning Stone Resort and Casino. Ortiz tried sparring. A few punches and he would break out into a cold sweat and tire. Maybe “King Kong” created a new training regimen. Every heavyweight contender should go out and get the flu, lie in bed for six days before a big fight and do as little training as possible, because it certainly worked for Ortiz. It translated into his best performance as a pro, stopping Jennings at 2:41 of the seventh round, after crashing a huge left uppercut that sent Jennings prone on the canvas. “I had the flu all week and I didn’t even think about pulling out,” Ortiz said. “I first found out I was sick two weeks ago.

'Cowboy' Cerrone: Sometimes you don't show up to work

"He got me with a knee, not the kick. The kick didn't land. The knee's what started it then he put a great onslaught of punches on me," Cerrone said. "He did a great job overwhelming me and do what he had to do to remain champ. Sometimes you just don't show up and in our profession it's a bad day."

Opinion: MMA’s Golden Geese

Editor's note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. It was an electric scene on Dec. 8, 2007, as the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas was rocking. A seemingly overwhelming sea of fans from the United Kingdom filled up the arena with chants of “Hatton Wonderland,” as they tirelessly rooted for their guy, the then-unbeaten Ricky Hatton, and vehemently jeered the undefeated pound-for-pound king of boxing, Floyd Mayweather Jr. The British had literally taken over just about every aspect of the Las Vegas Strip. Chants didn’t just shower the arena; they hovered over the casino floor and could be heard from every corner of the venue. As a member of the working press, it was arguably the most uproarious scene I’ve ever been a part of. Unfortunately for the Brits, Mayweather flattened Hatton in the 10th round and sent them home unhappy. However, the impression that event left on the boxing world was undeniable and hasn’t quite been matched since, regardless of how big Mayweather’s subsequent fights turned out to be.

Mike Ricci vs. Caros Fodor to Headline WSOF 27 in Memphis on Jan. 23

World Series of Fighting will begin its 2016 campaign next month in Memphis, Tennessee. The Las Vegas-based organization on Monday announced that FedEx Forum will host WSOF 27 , a card set to be headlined by a lightweight duel between onetime “Ultimate Fighter” finalist Mike Ricci and former Strikeforce standout Caros Fodor . The Jan. 23 event will air live on NBCSN beginning at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. Ricci, 29, has won three straight bouts since being released by the UFC in 2013, including victories over fellow Octagon vets George Sotiropoulos and Jorge Gurgel . The Tristar Gym representative knocked out Joe Condon in the opening round of WSOF’s one-night lightweight tournament on Nov. 20, but Ricci was unable to continue in the bracket due to a hip injury. Fodor, 31, spent the past two years competing for Singapore’s One Championship, where he ran up a record of 3-1 with a pair of submission wins. “The Future” has been absent from the cage since September 2014, when he bested Vincent Latoel via second-round rear-naked choke.

Rances Barthelemy Captures IBF Lightweight Title

Rances Barthelemy doesn’t need to do the things he does. The Cuban expatriate and former IBF super featherweight likes to wade in and crowd an opponent, though he is a rangy 5-foot-11 with a 73-inch reach. Use those physical tools and fight from distance, while locking himself in a cocoon? That’s just not him. He likes to keep coming forward. The 29-year-old’s career took another forward step Friday night against Russian Denis Shafikov (36-2-1, 19 KO) by winning the vacant IBF lightweight title on the PBC show from the Palms Casino Resort, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Barthelemy (24-0, 13 KO) won by the comfortable distance 119-109 and 116-112 (2) on the judge’s scorecards, though the two 116-122 scores seemed more indicative of what actually went on than the 119-109 score. By the fifth round, a cut had opened over Shafikov’s right eye, caused by a steady stream of jabs mixed in with an occasional upper cut. By the eighth, referee Vic Drakulich had momentarily stopped the fight so the ringside doctor could take a look at the eye. Still, Shafikov kept coming, his white silk trunks taking on a pinkish tone from the cut.

Rafael dos Anjos: Moving to Lightweight Would Not Be a Smart Decision for Conor McGregor

Rafael dos Anjos made Donald Cerrone ’s eight-fight winning streak seem like a distant memory at UFC on Fox 17 , as he unceremoniously dispatched the fan favorite in a mere 66 seconds. In a year of emerging superstars and newly-crowned champions, it was easy to forget how good dos Anjos has become in the past few years. After all, it had been nine months since the Brazilian authored a five-round beatdown of the flashy Anthony Pettis in Dallas. No matter: dos Anjos doesn’t need long to make a statement. “We knew that I had 25 minutes to win the fight, but on the way to the Octagon I was talking to my coaches,” dos Anjos said at Saturday’s post-fight press conference. “They said we have 25 minutes to win the fight, but don’t miss an opportunity. I felt when I threw a knee to the body on him it was the beginning of the end.” That knee had Cerrone reeling, and dos Anjos capitalized by unleashing a barrage of punches on a fading “Cowboy” near the fence. The WEC veteran attempted to stall the inevitable by shooting for a takedown, but dos Anjos easily stuffed the try, spun to his foe’s back and forced the stoppage with a series of unanswered shots on the canvas.

UFC on Fox 17 Bonuses: dos Anjos, Diaz, Johnson, Luque Earn $50K Checks

Rafael dos Anjos set a record for fastest lightweight title defense with his 66-second stoppage of Donald Cerrone in the UFC on Fox 17 main event, but that short night at the office didn’t adversely affect the Brazilian’s payday. The reigning lightweight king earned a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his lopsided victory over Cerrone at the Amway Center in Orlando on Saturday night. A knee and follow-up kick to the body had “Cowboy” reeling, and dos Anjos didn’t waste time in swarming with punches against the fence. Moments later, Cerrone dove for a desperation takedown attempt, which allowed dos Anjos to move to his opponent’s back and seal the victory with a series of right hands to the head. Elsewhere, Nate Diaz and Michael Johnson garnered “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their spirited lightweight battle. After a solid start by Johnson in round one, Diaz took control of the bout thanks to his reach and consistent combination punching to win via unanimous decision. Finally, Vicente Luque captured the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” check for his first-round submission of Hayder Hassan .

“Well I know that was a huge stumbling block with Fedor and trying to sign Fedor, back when I was pursuing that fight specifically as a contracted fighter with the UFC and that was the fight that I told them that I wanted,” Couture told Submission Radio. “I was ranked number two in the world; he was ranked number one in the world at the time. I know they negotiated with him for a long time, but M-1 Global wanted to do co-promotion, and they were kind of handling and managing, representing Fedor. And that was a stumbling block. They were like, ‘no we’re not going to put anybody else over. We don’t need another promotion, we don’t need a co-promotion, we’re the UFC and that’s it’.
