Jake Shields: An Unexpected Journey

About the only color in the sterile, white hospital room came from an unusual place. It emanated from the fighter sitting awake in his bed groping at the gauzy figure around him, more specifically, his eyes. A distorted, purplish hue had already taken shape around swollen, tear-filled, mini-mountains of stretched flesh that jutted up beyond his forehead. He was broken, and his mumbled words were depressing. What hurt Jake Shields more than anything that night was the feeling that something he loved, his passion, had robbed him. Everything he did right was defeated by an opponent who did everything wrong. This was his price, he thought, for the countless hours and sacrifice, lying in this hospital bed wondering if he would ever be able to clearly see his daughter or family again. The last time Shields was in the cage, he submitted to Rousimar Palhares at World Series of Fighting 22 on Aug. 1, 2015 in Las Vegas. It was a fight Shields had controlled until he became entangled in a Palhares kimura and tapped 2:02 into the third round.

The substance is part of a therapeutic treatment being administered to me by doctor that started the 26th of September and is suppose to last for a period of no less than 90 days, requiring blood exams at the completion. In addition to the treatment administered to me by Dr Ulyssea M Da C O Pinto (CRM-PR19062/CRM-RJ 30150-9/CRM SC 2740/ CRM -RO 2630) I was given a medical suspension by her not to enter into competition style training or weight cutting practices during the period of recovery. Khabib Nurmagomedov Responds To Jose Aldo In Lengthy Post, Only Wants To Fight One Man

Aldo says, referring to me, that I refused to fight with him. Tell him that I do not bully the little. I want a real battle, and only Tony can give it to me. At this stage of my career, even if I win Daniel Cormier, fans will say that I have to fight with Tony, and I agree with them. I have spent my career in the UFC asking for the strongest opponents, currently in this division we must decide who is stronger, me or Tony? Without exception, all the fans and experts want to see this fight and I want to give it to them. And you, Aldo, I advise you not to lose the respect of your fans, including me, do not lose your head, do not fall for the mind games of the UFC, and be yourself.

Mark Hunt Seeking Anti-Doping Clause in Contract for Overeem Bout at UFC 209

While the Ultimate Fighting Championship has already officially announced a rematch between Mark Hunt and Alistair Overeem for UFC 209, the bout isn’t quite a finished product -- at least as far as Hunt is concerned. Hunt told his website, , that he will only fight Overeem on March 4 in Las Vegas if a special provision is added to the contract in case his opponent fails a drug test. “My clause will protect me in this instance and take the financial gain of the opponent of caught cheating, ” Hunt said. “That deterrent will protect me and other fighters. I’m pushing for this clause, I want to fight and I am ready. If the fight doesn’t go ahead it’s not my doing.” Hunt last appeared at UFC 200, where he lost a unanimous decision to Brock Lesnar . It was later revealed that Lesnar tested positive for the anti-estrogen agent clomiphene in both an in- and out-of-competition drug test in relation to the event. Lesnar was fined $250,000 and suspended for one year, and his victory was overturned to a no contest.

Jessica Andrade-Maryna Moroz Strawweight Tilt Removed from UFC 207 Card

The UFC’s year-end pay-per-view card will not include strawweight contender Jessica Andrade . The Las Vegas-based promotion announced on Wednesday that a featured 115-pound contest between Andrade and Maryna Moroz at UFC 207 has been canceled due to an undisclosed injury suffered by Moroz. Andrade vs. Moroz was scheduled to kick off the pay-per-view; instead, a flyweight clash between Louis Smolka and Ray Borg will begin that portion of the card. UFC 207 takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Dec. 30 and is headlined by a women’s bantamweight title showdown between Amanda Nunes and Ronda Rousey . In the co-main event, Dominick Cruz will defend the bantamweight strap against Cody Garbrandt . Andrade appeared hopeful of receiving a replacement opponent earlier this week, as the Brazilian fighter was in Las Vegas completing her pre-fight medicals. However, the promotion elected not to make a replacement fight. Opinion: Watching Through the Rearview

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * I watched UFC on Fox 22 after it had already finished. I had to work on Sunday morning, when most fight cards are live in my time zone, and after the requisite hweshik -- a Korean custom where you go out and drink with your boss -- all the hands had already been raised in Sacramento, California. While I was out, I couldn’t help myself; by the time I rolled home, I knew the who and the how of the event’s winners. I probably could have left it at that and scanned through play-by-plays and post-fight analyses, but there’s a difference between reading about fights and actually watching them. So that’s what I did. For whatever is lost in the way of genuine intrigue, watching fights through the rearview makes up for it with added clarity. Upsets, bad decisions, surprising performances -- they all make more sense when you expect them.

Frankie Saenz to Face Augusto Mendes at UFC Fight Night 103 in Phoenix

A bantamweight clash pitting Frankie Saenz against Augusto Mendes has been added to the UFC Fight Night 103 lineup. Additionally, a strawweight showdown between Jocelyn Jones-Lybarger and Nina Ansaroff was also recently confirmed for the event. Fox Sports Arizona first reported the bout. UFC Fight Night 103 takes place at Talking Stick Arena in Phoenix on Jan. 15 and is headlined by a featherweight duel between B.J. Penn and Yair Rodriguez . The evening’s main card will be televised on Fox Sports 1. After winning his first three Octagon appearances, Saenz has dropped back-to-back fights against Eddie Wineland and Urijah Faber . The 36-year-old Phoenix native is 11-4 as a professional, with three wins via KO/TKO and two by submission. A three-time Legacy Fighting Championship veteran, Mendes made his promotional debut at UFC Fight Night 83, where he suffered a first-round knockout loss to current No. 1 contender Cody Garbrandt . The Rio de Janeiro native finished all of his first five opponents inside two rounds.

The Hit List: Undefeated Fighters in the UFC

Cody Garbrandt finds himself in exclusive company as he prepares to challenge Dominick Cruz for the undisputed bantamweight title in the UFC 207 co-main event on Dec. 30 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Only 30 of the 670 fighters the Ultimate Fighting Championship lists on its roster are undefeated and have at least one victory inside the Octagon, and Garbrandt is one of them. The 25-year-old Team Alpha Male standout has developed rapidly since arriving in the UFC, as he has improved to 10-0 with five consecutive victories, four of them finishes. Garbrandt’s victims include Marcus Brimgae, Enrique Briones , Augusto Mendes and Thomas Almeida , who was a perfect 21-0 at the time of their encounter. The Uhrichsville, Ohio, native last appeared at UFC 202 on Aug. 20, when he disposed of Takeya Mizugaki with punches in just 48 seconds and cemented his position at the No. 1 contender at 135 pounds. His unblemished record notwithstanding, Garbrandt faces an uphill climb against Cruz. The Alliance MMA cornerstone will enter the cage on a 13-fight winning streak and has not tasted defeat in nearly a decade.

Updated: Cris ‘Cyborg’ Tests Positive for Diuretic, Faces Possible 1-Year USADA Suspension

Cristiane Justino could have bigger problems than not being included in the UFC’s inaugural women’s featherweight title bout. The promotion released a statement on Thursday announcing that “Cyborg” has been notified of a potential anti-doping violation stemming from an out-of-competition sample collected on Dec. 5. As usual, USADA will handle the “results management and appropriate adjudication of the case.” The Brazilian will be entitled to a full legal review process before any sanctions are levied. While USADA did not reveal the result of the test, Justino announced on her Facebook page that she tested positive for the diuretic spironolactone. According to “Cyborg,” “The substance is part of a therapeutic treatment being administered to me by doctor that started the 26th of September and is suppose to last for a period of no less than 90 days, requiring blood exams at the completion. “..We are being fully cooperating with USADA at this time and have already started the process of applying for a retroactive therapeutic use exemption.

Yancy Medeiros meets Li Jingliang at UFC on FOX 23 in Denver

Medeiros has been alternating wins and losses of late, as well. After a two-fight winning streak in 2014 that saw him take consecutive “Performance of the Night” bonuses for submissions of Damon Jackson and Joe Proctor, he was stopped in the first round by Dustin Poirier at UFC Fight Night 68. He rebounded with a split decision over John Makdessi at UFC 194 a year ago, but in May dropped a “Fight of the Night” decision to Francisco Trinaldo in Brazil.

The Bottom Line: Dominick Cruz the True King of MMA Trash Talk

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Who is the best trash talker in MMA? If you took a poll on that question, there’s no question who would win it handily. With his bluster, braggadocio and style, Conor McGregor would get the nod. McGregor doesn’t just entertain with his words; he draws lots and lots of money with them. He has the highest profile, and for many, the revenue he generates is the ultimate proof of his verbal supremacy. Unquestionably, McGregor deserves respect for his microphone arsenal. There’s nothing wrong with arguing he’s the best. However, when it comes to the best pure ability to verbally obliterate an opponent, my money’s not on McGregor. It’s on Dominick Cruz . His beatdown of Cody Garbrandt during the UFC on Fox 22 broadcast on Saturday -- it was not even peak Cruz -- was yet another reminder that when it comes talking trash, “The Dominator” is the pound-for-pound best.

John Kavanagh to Require All SBG Ireland Fighters to Undergo Brain Scan in 2017

Conor McGregor ’s coach will be taking an extra precautionary measure to ensure the safety of his fighters in 2017. John Cavanagh recently issued a statement on his Facebook page announcing that all professional and amateur fighters under the SBG Ireland banner will be required to undergo a “one-off” brain scan in 2017 in order to represent the team. “For 2017 ALL SBG fighters, both amateur and professional will be getting a one off brain scan to make sure there's no underlying issues that would preclude them from competing. It is not yet a requirement to get this done to compete on shows but it will be a requirement to represent SBG,” Kavanagh wrote. Most fighters who compete in major promotions are required to submit pre-fight medicals to state athletic commissions. Studying and preventing brain damage and head trauma in combat and contact sports has become more prevalent in recent years, and Kavanagh’s requirement appears to be a significant step toward improving fighter health and safety. “Take 100 random people and scan them and a small percentage will have an issue that would stop them competing,” he continued.

Mamed Khalidov, Mariusz Pudzianowski Top Lineup for KSW Stadium Show in Warsaw

Polish promotion Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki has announced plans for a stadium show in Poland at Warsaw’s National Stadium on May 27. The event will take place at the PGE Narodowy, a retractable roof stadium with a capacity of approximately 58,415 that is home to the Polish national soccer team. Since its inception in 2004, KSW has held virtually all of its events at various arenas in Poland, with the exception being an October 2015 card in London ‘s Wembley Stadium. However, the upcoming show will mark the promotion’s inaugural event at the venue. “With all these arenas being simply too small for blockbuster KSW shows, the decision was made to schedule the stadium event in 2017,” the release stated. KSW middleweight champion Mamed Khalidov , former World’s Strongest Man Mariusz Pudzianowski and KSW heavyweight king Fernando Rodrigues Jr. are all expected to compete on the card, although opponents have yet to be determined. Olympic wrestling bronze medalist Damian Janikowski will also make his MMA debut on May 27.

UFC statement on Cris Cyborg

USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case. It is important to note that, under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, there is a full fair legal review process that is afforded to all athletes before any sanctions are imposed. Consistent with all previous potential anti-doping violations, additional information or UFC statements will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward.

Jon Fitch: The Battle Rages On

Jon Fitch has never been one to agree with the status quo for the sake of getting by. The Indiana native has spent more than a decade standing up to and pushing back against the establishment in what he believes has been a rigged game from the jump. Some of Fitch's battles have been highly publicized where others have been calculated moves over the course of time, but regardless of the situation, he's never stopped fighting for what he believes in. Fitch will continue his efforts until fighters past, present and future receive the type of treatment they rightfully deserve. "Ever since I was a kid I wanted to be a professional athlete," Fitch said. "Originally I wanted to be a football player but I wasn't big enough, strong enough or fast enough. I still wanted to be a professional athlete, but the way that true professional athletes carry themselves and the way the sports operate doesn't look anything like mixed martial arts. "I think a lot of people have had the wool pulled over their eyes and don't see what is structurally wrong with the sport. This is not a sport. Every major sport adheres to the same fundamental formulas and mixed martial arts does not.

Adam Lopez to Fight Danny Roman in First ShoBox Card of 2017

Showtime announced on Tuesday that Adam Lopez will taking on Danny Roman in the main event of the first ShoBox: The New Generation event of 2017. The two super bantamweights will collide in a 10-round matchup at Bally’s Atlantic City Hotel and Casino in New Jersey on Jan. 20. Lopez (16-0-1, 8 KOs) has been lighting up the division since turning pro and has feasted on regional opposition. The San Antonio-based fighter is already ranked No. 3 by the WBA at 122 pounds and is coming off a knockout win over Carlos Valcarcel in November. He’s already conquered three previously-unbeaten prospects on ShoBox and is ready to take the next step in his career. “This will be my toughest fight. It is all about levels and progressing,” Lopez said of the matchup between the 26-year-old world-ranked contenders. “This may be my last ShoBox fight so I want to save the best for the last.” Roman (20-2-1, 7 KOs) has had a similar career path, but unlike his upcoming foe, the Los Angeles native has already tasted defeat and grown from it. Roman lost early in his career but has since reeled off 13 consecutive wins.
